Ultrasonography is considered a relatively safe option for the diagnosis of benign and malignant cancer lesions due to the low-energy sound waves used. However, the visual interpretation of the ultrasound images is time-consuming and usually has high false alerts due to speckle noise. Improved methods of collection image-based data have been proposed to reduce noise in the images; however, this has proved not to solve the problem due to the complex nature of images and the exponential growth of biomedical datasets. How To Reconcile Randomness With Physicists' Belief That Every Theory Is Approximate: Informal Knowledge Is Needed, Ricardo Alvarez, Nick Sims, Christian Servin, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

In this paper, we show that physicists' intuition about randomness is not fully consistent with their belief that every theory is only approximate. We also prove that there is no formal way to reconcile these two intuitions, this reconciliation has to be informal. Thus, there are fundamental reasons why informal knowledge is needed for describing the real world.

This paper analyzes how the use of various cryptographic and cryptanalytic techniques affected the American Revolution. By examining specific instances of and each country's general approaches to cryptography and cryptanalysis, it is determined that America's use of these techniques provided the rising nation with a critical advantage over Great Britain that assisted in its victory.

Let G be a weakly connected directed graph with asymmetric graph Laplacian L. Consensus and diffusion are dual dynamical processes defined on G by x˙=−Lx for consensus and p˙=−pL for diffusion. We consider both these processes as well their discrete time analogues. We define a basis of row vectors {γ¯i}ki=1 of the left null-space of L and a basis of column vectors {γi}ki=1 of the right null-space of L in terms of the partition of G into strongly connected components. A quasilinearization algorithm is developed for boundary value problems at resonance. To do so, a standard monotonicity condition is assumed to obtain the uniqueness of solutions for the boundary value problem at resonance. Then the method of upper and lower solutions and the shift method are applied to obtain the existence of solutions. A quasilinearization algorithm is developed and sequences of approximate solutions are constructed, which converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem at resonance. Two examples are provided in which explicit upper and lower solutions are exhibited.

A comprehensive two- and three-dimensional framework for the electrohydrodynamic simulation of deformable capsules is provided. The role of a direct current (DC) electric field on the deformation and orientation of a liquid-filled capsule is thoroughly considered numerically. This framework is based on lattice Boltzmann method for the fluid, finite element method for the membrane structure of the capsule, fast immersed interface method for the electric field and immersed boundary method being used to consider the fluid-structure-electric interaction. The feedback interconnection of two systems written in terms of Chen-Fliess series can be described explicitly in terms of the antipode of the output feedback Hopf algebra. At present, there are three known computational approaches to calculating this antipode: the left coproduct method, the right coproduct method, and the derivation method. Each of these algorithms is defined recursively, and thus becomes computationally expensive quite quickly. The main contribution of this work is the development of direct explicit methods of Runge-Kutta (RK) type for solving class of seventh-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to improve computational efficiency. For this purpose, we have generalized RK, RKN, RKD, RKT, RKFD and RKM methods for solving class of first-, second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-order ODEs. Using Taylor expansion approach, we have derived the algebraic equations of the order conditions for the proposed RKM integrators up to the tenth-order. Based on these order conditions, two RKM methods of fifth- and sixth-order with four- and five-stage are derived. The zero stability of …

Some optimality results for hybrid control problems are presented. The hybrid model under study consists of two subdynamics, one of a standard type governed by an ordinary differential equation, and the other of a special type having a discrete evolution. We focus on the case when the interaction between the subdynamics takes place only when the state of the system reaches a given fixed region of the state space. The controller is able to apply two controls, each applied to one of the two subdynamics, whereas the state follows a composite evolution, of continuous type and discrete type. By the …

Complexity thinking and understanding are vital skills for young people in these times of uncertainty and change. Such skills contribute to resilience and capacities for adaptivity and innovation. Education is traditionally structured as a closed system, privileging result-driven methods that offer control and predictability. In recent decades this reductionist approach has been effectively challenged by interdisciplinary work in complex systems theory, revealing myriad levels of orderly disorder that make either-or, linear instruction an inadequate norm. Narrowing the broad implications of a complexity lens on education, this paper focuses on generative uncertainty in teaching-learning, a paradoxical state of epistemological and creative growth described by English poet John Keats as "the negative capability of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts." The importance of creativity in education has been discussed often in the literature. While there remains no agreed-upon definition of creativity, the psychological literature points to traits of a creative person. These include the ability to think outside the box, make connections between seemingly disparate ideas, and question norms. The literature provides several examples of classroom experiments to help foster creativity in the classroom. In science and mathematics, we can start by getting students to recognize mathematics and the sciences as being creative endeavors.
