Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya Jan 2019

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya

Journal Articles

In this paper, we consider the problem of multiple testing where the hypotheses are dependent. In most of the existing literature, either Bayesian or non-Bayesian, the decision rules mainly focus on the validity of the test procedure rather than actually utilizing the dependency to increase efficiency. Moreover, the decisions regarding different hypotheses are marginal in the sense that they do not depend upon each other directly. However, in realistic situations, the hypotheses are usually dependent, and hence it is desirable that the decisions regarding the dependent hypotheses are taken jointly. In this article, we develop a novel Bayesian multiple testing …

Bayesian Hierarchical Meta-Analysis Of Asymptomatic Ebola Seroprevalence, Peter Brody-Moore Jan 2019

Bayesian Hierarchical Meta-Analysis Of Asymptomatic Ebola Seroprevalence, Peter Brody-Moore

CMC Senior Theses

The continued study of asymptomatic Ebolavirus infection is necessary to develop a more complete understanding of Ebola transmission dynamics. This paper conducts a meta-analysis of eight studies that measure seroprevalence (the number of subjects that test positive for anti-Ebolavirus antibodies in their blood) in subjects with household exposure or known case-contact with Ebola, but that have shown no symptoms. In our two random effects Bayesian hierarchical models, we find estimated seroprevalences of 8.76% and 9.72%, significantly higher than the 3.3% found by a previous meta-analysis of these eight studies. We also produce a variation of this meta-analysis where we exclude …

Mathematically Modeling The Role Of Triglyceride Production On Leptin Resistance, Yu Zhao, Daniel Burkow, Baojun Song Jan 2019

Mathematically Modeling The Role Of Triglyceride Production On Leptin Resistance, Yu Zhao, Daniel Burkow, Baojun Song

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Diet-induced obesity is becoming more common all over the world, which is increasing the prevalence of obesity-induced chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, and sleep apnea. Many experimental results show that obesity is often associated with an elevated concentration of plasma leptin and triglycerides. Triglycerides inhibit the passage of leptin across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) to signal the hypothalamus to suppress appetite. However, it is still not clear how triglyceride concentration affects leptin transport across the BBB and energy balance. In this paper, we propose a novel ordinary differential equations model describing the role of leptin in …

Eigenvalues And Approximation Numbers, Ryan Chakmak Jan 2019

Eigenvalues And Approximation Numbers, Ryan Chakmak

CMC Senior Theses

While the spectral theory of compact operators is known to many, knowledge regarding the relationship between eigenvalues and approximation numbers might be less known. By examining these numbers in tandem, one may develop a link between eigenvalues and l^p spaces. In this paper, we develop the background of this connection with in-depth examples.

Credit Risk Analysis Using Machine Learning And Neural Networks, Dhruv Dhanesh Thanawala

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A key activity within the banking industry is to extend credit to customers, hence,

credit risk analysis is critical for nancial risk management. There are various methods

used to perform credit risk analysis. In this project, we analyze German and

Australian nancial data from UC Irvine Machine Learning repository, reproducing

results previously published in literature. Further, using the same dataset and various

machine learning algorithms, we attempt to create better models by tuning available

parameters, however, our results are at best comparable to published results.

In this report, we have explained the algorithms and mathematical framework that

goes behind developing …

A Family Of Cantorvals, John Ferdinands, Timothy Ferdinands Jan 2019

A Family Of Cantorvals, John Ferdinands, Timothy Ferdinands

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The set of subsums of the series Σn=1∞ xn is known to be one of three types: a finite union of intervals, homeomorphic to the Cantor set, or of the type known as a Cantorval. Bartoszewicz, Filipczak and Szymonik have described a family of series which contained all known examples of subsum sets which are Cantorvals. We construct another family of series which produces new examples of subsum sets which are Cantorvals.

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The aim of this paper is to make a proposal for an easy–to–use approach to the evaluation of customer satisfaction in restaurants. In order to provide a reliable way to collect respondents’ real attitudes, an approach based on the use of smaller number of evaluation criteria and interactive questionnaire created in a spreadsheet file is proposed in this paper, whereby an easy-to-understand and simple-touse procedure is proposed for determining weights of criteria. In addition to the said, the proposed approach applies the simplified SERVQUAL-based approach, for which reason a simplified version of the Weighted Sum Method based on the decision …

Neutrosophic Triplet Structures - Vol. 1, Florentin Smarandache, Memet Sahin

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic set has been derived from a new branch of philosophy, namely Neutrosophy. Neutrosophic set is capable of dealing with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information. Neutrosophic set approaches are suitable to modeling problems with uncertainty, indeterminacy and inconsistent information in which human knowledge is necessary, and human evaluation is needed. Neutrosophic set theory was firstly proposed in 1998 by Florentin Smarandache, who also developed the concept of single valued neutrosophic set, oriented towards real world scientific and engineering applications. Since then, the single valued neutrosophic set theory has been extensively studied in books and monographs, the properties of neutrosophic sets …

Rule Extraction And Insertion To Improve The Performance Of A Dynamic Cell Structure Neural Network, Osama Amhamed Elsarrar Jan 2019

Rule Extraction And Insertion To Improve The Performance Of A Dynamic Cell Structure Neural Network, Osama Amhamed Elsarrar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Artificial Neural Networks are extremely useful machine learning tools. They are used for many purposes, such as prediction, classification, pattern recognition, etc. Although neural networks have been used for decades, they are still often not completely understood or trusted, especially in safety and mission critical situations. Typically, neural networks are trained on data sets that are representative of what needs to be learned. Sometimes training sets are constructed in order to train the neural network in a certain way, in order to embed appropriate knowledge. The purpose of this research is to determine if there is another method that can …

The Application Of Contemporary Numerical Methods To The Modeling, Analysis, And Uncertainty Quantification Of Glacier Dynamics, Jacob Zachary Downs Jan 2019

The Application Of Contemporary Numerical Methods To The Modeling, Analysis, And Uncertainty Quantification Of Glacier Dynamics, Jacob Zachary Downs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Warming temperatures have led to accelerating ice loss from the Greenland ice sheet, contributing to global sea level rise. Understanding the stability of the Greenland ice sheet to further warming is crucial to estimating rates of sea level rise over the next century. Estimating sea level rise is complicated by uncertainties in the physical mechanisms governing ice motion as well as uncertainties in the broader Arctic climate system of which the ice sheet is an integral part. In chapter 2, we focus on how surface melt water input to the ice sheet bed influences the rate of basal sliding, which …

In this paper we prove that Neutrosophic Set (NS) is an extension of Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set (IFS) no matter if the sum of single-valued neutrosophic components is < 1, or > 1, or = 1. For the case when the sum of components is 1 (as in IFS), after applying the neutrosophic aggregation operators one gets a different result from that of applying the intuitionistic fuzzy operators, since the intuitionistic fuzzy operators ignore the indeterminacy, while the neutrosophic aggregation operators take into consideration the indeterminacy at the same level as truth-membership and falsehood-nonmembership are taken. NS is also more flexible and effective because it …

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K Jan 2019

Special Subset Vertex Multisubgraphs For Multi Networks, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors study special type of subset vertex multi subgraphs; these multi subgraphs can be directed or otherwise. Another special feature of these subset vertex multigraphs is that we are aware of the elements in each vertex set and how it affects the structure of both subset vertex multisubgraphs and edge multisubgraphs. It is pertinent to record at this juncture that certain ego centric directed multistar graphs become empty on the removal of one edge, there by theorising the importance, and giving certain postulates how to safely form ego centric multi networks. Given any subset vertex multigraph we …

Practical Chaos: Using Dynamical Systems To Encrypt Audio And Visual Data, Julia Ruiter Jan 2019

Practical Chaos: Using Dynamical Systems To Encrypt Audio And Visual Data, Julia Ruiter

Scripps Senior Theses

Although dynamical systems have a multitude of classical uses in physics and applied mathematics, new research in theoretical computer science shows that dynamical systems can also be used as a highly secure method of encrypting data. Properties of Lorenz and similar systems of equations yield chaotic outputs that are good at masking the underlying data both physically and mathematically. This paper aims to show how Lorenz systems may be used to encrypt text and image data, as well as provide a framework for how physical mechanisms may be built using these properties to transmit encrypted wave signals.

This paper will describe how this cryptosystem works and give a basic understanding on how to encrypt and decrypt using this system.

Inverse Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Applied To Modeling High Frequency Data, Emmanuel Kofi Kusi Jan 2019

Inverse Gaussian Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Applied To Modeling High Frequency Data, Emmanuel Kofi Kusi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With about 226050 estimated deaths worldwide in 2010, earthquake is considered as one of the disasters that record a great number of deaths. This Thesis develops a model for the estimation of magnitude of future seismic events.

We propose a stochastic differential equation arising on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by Inverse Gaussian (a,b) process. Inverse Gaussian (a,b) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes offer analytic flexibility and provides a class of continuous time processes capable of exhibiting long memory behavior. The stochastic differential equation is applied to geophysics and financial stock market by fitting the superposed Inverse Gaussian (a,b) Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model to earthquake and …

Decision Making Under Uncertainty With Applications To Geosciences And Finance, Laxman Bokati Jan 2019

Decision Making Under Uncertainty With Applications To Geosciences And Finance, Laxman Bokati

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In many practical situations, we need to make a decision. In engineering, we need to decide on the best design of a system, and, for existing systems â?? on the best control strategy. In financial applications, we need to decide what is the best way to invest money. In geosciences, we need to decide whether we should explore a possible mineral deposit â?? or whether we should perform more experiments and measurements (and what exactly). In some cases, we can compute the exact consequences of each decision - e.g., if we are controlling a satellite. However, in many other cases, …

Forecasting Crashes, Credit Card Default, And Imputation Analysis On Missing Values By The Use Of Neural Networks, Jazmin Quezada Jan 2019

Forecasting Crashes, Credit Card Default, And Imputation Analysis On Missing Values By The Use Of Neural Networks, Jazmin Quezada

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A neural network is a system of hardware and/or software patterned after the operation of neurons in the human brain. Neural networks,- also called Artificial Neural Networks - are a variety of deep learning technology, which also falls under the umbrella of artificial intelligence, or AI. Recent studies shows that Artificial Neural Network has the highest coefficient of determination (i.e. measure to assess how well a model explains and predicts future outcomes.) in comparison to the K-nearest neighbor classifiers, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, naive Bayesian classifier, and classification trees. In this work, the theoretical description of the neural network methodology …

Equilibrium Structures And Thermal Fluctuations In Interacting Monolayers, Emmanuel Rivera Jan 2019

Equilibrium Structures And Thermal Fluctuations In Interacting Monolayers, Emmanuel Rivera

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Coherency strains appear in interacting atomic monolayers due to differing bond lengths, which can arise from different materials or geometries. Examples include extended monolayers interacting with a substrate and the interacting walls of a multi-walled carbon nanotube. These strains can induce various equilibrium configurations, which we will analyze by means of a phenomenological model that incorporates forces from bond stretching and bending within each layer and the weak van der Waals interactions connecting the separate layers. We vary the strengths of each interaction to explore their effects on equilibrium structures, and the specific case of a two-walled carbon nanotube is …

Associated Primes And Syzygies Of Linked Modules, Olgur Celikbas, Mohammad T. Dibaei, Mohsen Gheibi, Arash Sadeghi, Ryo Takahaski

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the notion of geometrically linked ideals, we show that over a Gorenstein local ring R, if a Cohen-Macaulay R-module M of grade g is linked to an R-module N by a Gorenstein ideal c, such that AssR(M)\AssR(N) = ;, then M R N is isomorphic to direct sum of copies of R=a, where a is a Gorenstein ideal of R of grade g + 1. We give a criterion for the depth of a local ring (R;m; k) in terms of the homological dimensions of the modules linked to the syzygies of the residue eld k. As a …

Persistence Metrics For A River Population In A Two-Dimensional Benthic-Drift Model, Yu Jin, Qihua Huang, Julia Blackburn, Mark A. Lewis Jan 2019

Persistence Metrics For A River Population In A Two-Dimensional Benthic-Drift Model, Yu Jin, Qihua Huang, Julia Blackburn, Mark A. Lewis

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The study of population persistence in river ecosystems is key for understanding population dynamics, invasions, and instream flow needs. In this paper, we extend theories of persistence measures for population models in one-dimensional rivers to a benthic-drift model in two-dimensional depth- averaged rivers. We define the fundamental niche and the source and sink metric, and establish the net reproductive rate R0 to determine global persistence of a population in a spatially heterogeneous two-dimensional river. We then couple the benthic-drift model into the two-dimensional computational river model, River2D, to study the growth and persistence of a population and its source …

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov Jan 2019

Description Of Motor Control Using Inverse Models, Anton Sobinov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Humans can perform complicated movements like writing or running without giving them much thought. The scientific understanding of principles guiding the generation of these movements is incomplete. How the nervous system ensures stability or compensates for injury and constraints – are among the unanswered questions today. Furthermore, only through movement can a human impose their will and interact with the world around them. Damage to a part of the motor control system can lower a person’s quality of life. Understanding how the central nervous system (CNS) forms control signals and executes them helps with the construction of devices and rehabilitation …

Defining Historical Earthquake Rupture Parameters And Proposed Slip Distributions Through Tsunami Modeling In South-Central Chile, Alexander Dolcimascolo Jan 2019

Defining Historical Earthquake Rupture Parameters And Proposed Slip Distributions Through Tsunami Modeling In South-Central Chile, Alexander Dolcimascolo

All Master's Theses

Reliable tsunami early warning forecasts rely on accurate initial modeling conditions and interpretations of subduction zone behavior in a multi-century perspective. GPS and seismologic data were introduced this past century to study rupture dynamics in detail, however limited information is known about ruptures that pre-date the 20th century. I propose a methodology that uses statistics to better understand these pre-20th century ruptures. This methodology applies the historical and geologic tsunami record as a means to select a suite of tsunami simulations from earthquake source solutions. I chose south-central Chile (46°S to 30°S) to test this new methodology; it …

Approximation Of The Generalized Singular Value Expansion, Matthew Jacob Roberts Jan 2019

Approximation Of The Generalized Singular Value Expansion, Matthew Jacob Roberts

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Let $X$, $Y$, and $Z$ be real separable Hilbert spaces, let $T:X \to Y$ be a compact operator, and let $L:D(L) \to Z$ be a closed and densely defined linear operator. Then the generalized singular value expansion (GSVE) is an expansion that expresses $T$ and $L$ in terms of a common orthonormal basis. Under certain hypotheses on discretization, the GSVE of an approximate operator pair $(T_j,L_j)$, where $T_j:X_j \to Y_j$ and $L_j:X_j \to Z_j$, converges to the GSVE of $(T,L)$. Error estimates establish a rate of convergence that is consistent with numerical experiments in the case of discretization using piecewise …

High Order Bound-Preserving Discontinuous Galerkin Methods And Their Applications In Petroleum Engineering, Ziyao Xu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This report contains researches in the theory of high-order bound-preserving (BP) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method and their applications in petroleum engineering. It contains both theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. The compressible miscible displacements and wormhole propagation problem, arising in petroleum engineering, is used to describe the evolution of the pressure and concentrations of different components of fluid in porous media. The important physical features of concentration and porosity include their boundedness between 0 and 1, as well as the monotone increasing for porosity in wormhole propagation model. How to keep these properties in the simulation is crucial to the robustness …

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Convection-Diffusion Equations And Applications In Petroleum Engineering, Nattaporn Chuenjarern Jan 2019

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Convection-Diffusion Equations And Applications In Petroleum Engineering, Nattaporn Chuenjarern

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains research in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods applying to convection-diffusion equations. It contains both theoretical analysis and applications. Initially, we develop a conservative local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacement problem in two space dimensions. The main difficulty is how to deal with the discontinuity of approximations of velocity, u, in the convection term across the cell interfaces. To overcome the problems, we apply the idea of LDG with IMEX time marching using the diffusion term to control the convection term. Optimal error estimates in Linfinity(0, T; L2 …

Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss Jan 2019

Complex Varieties As Minima, Richard Koss

Masters Theses

We will explore various numeric methods of finding roots of an analytic function over some open set of the complex plane. We will discuss a method of visually observing the roots, a gradient descent method for finding the roots of an analytic function, a gradient descent method for solving systems of analytic functions, and finally a method of descent that uses osculating circles to find roots of an analytic function. Of particular interest to this thesis are roots of complex polynomials. There will be examples, code snippets, and outputs of programs to illustrate all of these methods.
