The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li Nov 2010

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This work is an extensive study of the 3 different types of positive solutions of the Matukuma equation 1r2(r2ϕ′)′=−rλ−2(1+r2)λ/2ϕp,p>1,λ>0 : the E-solutions (regular at r = 0), the M-solutions (singular at r = 0) and the F-solutions (whose existence begins away from r = 0). An essential tool is a transformation of the equation into a 2-dimensional asymptotically autonomous system, whose limit sets (by a theorem of H. R. Thieme) are the limit sets of Emden–Fowler systems, and serve as a characterization of the different solutions. The emphasis lies on the study of the M …

On Circulant And Two-Circulant Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, I. S. Kotsireast, C. Koukouvinos, Jennifer Seberry

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We employ theoretical and computational techniques to construct new weighing matrices constructed from two circulants. In particular, we con- struct W (148, 144), W (152, 144), W (156, 144) which are listed as open in the second edition of the Handbook of Combinatorial Designs. We also fill a missing entry in Strassler’s table with answer “YES”, by constructing a circulant weighing matrix of order 142 with weight 100.

On Construction Of The Smallest One-Sided Confidence Interval For The Difference Of Two Proportions, Weizhen Wang Apr 2010

On Construction Of The Smallest One-Sided Confidence Interval For The Difference Of Two Proportions, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

For my class of one-sided 1 - α confidence intervals with a certain monotonicity ordering on the random confidence limit, the smallest interval, in the sense of the set inclusion for the difference of two proportions of two independent binomial random variables, is constructed based on a direct analysis of coverage probability function. A special ordering on the confidence limit is developed and the corresponding smallest confidence interval is derived. This interval is then applied to identify the minimum effective dose (MED) for binary data in dose-response studies, and a multiple test procedure that controls the familywise error rate at …

Integer Functions On The Cycle Space And Edges Of A Graph, Dan Slilaty Feb 2010

Integer Functions On The Cycle Space And Edges Of A Graph, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A directed graph has a natural Z-module homomorphism from the underlying graph’s cycle space to Z where the image of an oriented cycle is the number of forward edges minus the number of backward edges. Such a homomorphism preserves the parity of the length of a cycle and the image of a cycle is bounded by the length of that cycle. Pretzel and Youngs (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 3(4):544–553, 1990) showed that any Z-module homomorphism of a graph’s cycle space to Z that satisfies these two properties for all cycles must be such a map induced from an edge direction …

Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li Jan 2010

Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we discuss the existence of traveling wave solutions for a nonlocal reaction-diffusion model of Influenza A proposed in Lin et. al. (2003). The proof for the existence of the traveling wave takes advantage of the different time scales between the evolution of the disease and the progress of the disease in the population. Under this framework we are able to use the techniques from geometric singular perturbation theory to prove the existence of the traveling wave.

The Regular Excluded Minors For Signed-Graphic Matroids, Hongxun Qin, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We show that the complete list of regular excluded minors for the class of signed-graphic matroids is M*(G1),...,M*(G29),R15,R16. Here G1,...,G29 are the vertically 2-connected excluded minors for the class of projective-planar graphs and R15 and R16 are two regular matroids that we will define in the article.

A Sensitivity Matrix Methodology For Inverse Problem Formulation, Ariel Cintron-Arias, H. Banks, Alex Capaldi, Alun Lloyd Aug 2009

A Sensitivity Matrix Methodology For Inverse Problem Formulation, Ariel Cintron-Arias, H. Banks, Alex Capaldi, Alun Lloyd

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We propose an algorithm to select parameter subset combinations that can be estimated using an ordinary least-squares (OLS) inverse problem formulation with a given data set. First, the algorithm selects the parameter combinations that correspond to sensitivity matrices with full rank. Second, the algorithm involves uncertainty quantification by using the inverse of the Fisher Information Matrix. Nominal values of parameters are used to construct synthetic data sets, and explore the effects of removing certain parameters from those to be estimated using OLS procedures. We quantify these effects in a score for a vector parameter defined using the norm of the …

A Berry-Esseen Theorem For Sample Quantiles Under Weak Dependence, S. N. Lahiri, Shuxia Sun Feb 2009

A Berry-Esseen Theorem For Sample Quantiles Under Weak Dependence, S. N. Lahiri, Shuxia Sun

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper proves a Berry-Esseen theorem for sample quantiles of strongly-mixing random variables under a polynomial mixing rate. The rate of normal approximation is shown to be O(n-1/2) as n -> infinity, where n denotes the sample size. This result is in sharp contrast to the case of the sample mean of strongly-mixing random variables where the rate O(n-1/2) is not known even under an exponential strong mixing rate. The main result of the paper has applications in finance and econometrics as financial time series important data often are heavy-tailed and quantile …

where p>1, xRn, n⩾3, and μ⩾0 is a constant. We study the structure of positive radial solutions of (0.1) and obtain the uniqueness of solution decaying faster than rm at ∞ if μ is small enough under some assumptions on K and f, where m is the slow decay rate.

Periodic Traveling Waves In Sirs Endemic Models, Tong Li, Yi Li, Herbert W. Hethcote Jan 2009

Periodic Traveling Waves In Sirs Endemic Models, Tong Li, Yi Li, Herbert W. Hethcote

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Mathematical models are used to determine if infection wave fronts could occur by traveling geographically in a loop around a region or continent. These infection wave fronts arise by Hopf bifurcation for some spatial models for infectious disease transmission with distributed-contacts. Periodic traveling waves are shown to exist for the spatial analog of the SIRS endemic model, in which the temporary immunity is described by a delay, but they do not exist in a similar spatial SIRS endemic model without a delay. Specifically, we found that the ratio of the delay ω in the recovered class and the average infectious …

Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith Jan 2008

Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The highly conductive surface layers found in nearly all as-grown or annealed bulk ZnO wafers are studied by temperature-dependent Hall-effect and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements. In this work, we have used annealing in N2 at 900 degrees C, and forming gas (5% H2 in N2) at 600 degrees C, to cause a large enough surface conduction that SIMS measurements can be reliably employed. The increased near-surface donor density, as determined from two-layer Hall-effect modeling, is consistent with an increased near-surface concentration of Al, Ga, and In atoms, resulting from diffusion. There is no evidence for …

Step-Up Simultaneous Tests For Identifying Active Effects In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Samuel S. Wu, Weizhen Wang Feb 2007

Step-Up Simultaneous Tests For Identifying Active Effects In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Samuel S. Wu, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A sequence of null hypotheses regarding the number of negligible effects (zero effects) in orthogonal saturated designs is formulated. Two step-up simultaneous testing procedures are proposed to identify active effects (nonzero effects) under the commonly used assumption of effect sparsity. It is shown that each procedure controls the experimentwise error rate at a given alpha level in the strong sense.

A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Six graphical procedures to check the assumption of proportional hazards for the Cox model are described and compared. A new way of comparing the graphical procedures using a Kolmogorov-Smirnov like maximum deviation criterion for rejection is derived for each procedure. The procedures are evaluated in a simulation study under proportional hazards and five different forms of nonproportional hazards: (1) increasing hazards, (2) decreasing hazards, (3) crossing hazards, (4) diverging hazards, and (5) nonmonotonic hazards. The procedures are compared in the two-sample case corresponding to two groups with different hazard functions. None of the procedures under consideration require partitioning of the …

Allometric Extension For Multivariate Regression Models, Thaddeus Tarpey, Christopher T. Ivey Oct 2006

Allometric Extension For Multivariate Regression Models, Thaddeus Tarpey, Christopher T. Ivey

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In multivariate regression, interest lies on how the response vector depends on a set of covariates. A multivariate regression model is proposed where the covariates explain variation in the response only in the direction of the first principal component axis. This model is not only parsimonious, but it provides an easy interpretation in allometric growth studies where the first principal component of the log-transformed data corresponds to constants of allometric growth. The proposed model naturally generalizes the two–group allometric extension model to the situation where groups differ according to a set of covariates. A bootstrap test for the model is …

Electrical Properties Of Unintentionally Doped Semi-Insulating And Conducting 6h-Sic, William C. Mitchel, W. D. Mitchell, Z. Q. Fang, S. R. Smith, Helen Smith, Igor Khlebnikov, Y. I. Khlebnikov, C. Basceri, C. Balkas Jan 2006

Electrical Properties Of Unintentionally Doped Semi-Insulating And Conducting 6h-Sic, William C. Mitchel, W. D. Mitchell, Z. Q. Fang, S. R. Smith, Helen Smith, Igor Khlebnikov, Y. I. Khlebnikov, C. Basceri, C. Balkas

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Temperature dependent Hall effect (TDH), low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), optical admittance spectroscopy (OAS), and thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements have been made on 6H-SiC grown by the physical vapor transport technique without intentional doping. n- and p-type as well semi-insulating samples were studied to explore the compensation mechanism in semi-insulating high purity SiC. Nitrogen and boron were found from TDH and SIMS measurements to be the dominant impurities that must be compensated to produce semi-insulating properties. The electrical activation energy of the semi-insulating sample determined from the dependence of the resistivity …

Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty Jan 2006

Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given a finite connected graph G and specifications for a closed, connected pseudosurface, we characterize when G can be imbedded in a closed, connected pseudosurface with the given specifications. The specifications for the pseudosurface are: the number of face-connected components, the number of pinches, the number of crosscaps and handles, and the dimension of the first Z2-homology group. The characterizations are formulated in terms of the existence of a dual graph G ∗ on the same set of edges as G which satisfies algebraic conditions inspired by homology groups and their intersection products.

On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang Jan 2006

On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Adaptive, size-a step-down tests are provided for the analysis of orthogonal saturated designs. The tests work effectively under effect sparsity, and include as special cases the individual nonadaptive tests of Berk and Picard (1991) and the simultaneous nonadaptive tests of Voss (1988). The approach is similar to that used by Wang and Voss (2003) to construct adaptive confidence intervals, but testing is simpler because one can use the same denominator for all statistics. Step-down tests also have a clear power advantage over simultaneous confidence intervals and analogous single-step tests, as is demonstrated theoretically and assessed via simulation.

Investigation Of Laser Beam Induced Current Techniques For Heterojunction Photodiode Characterization, Weifu Fang, David A. Redfern, Kazufumi Ito, G. Bahir, Charles A. Musca, John M. Dell, Lorenzo Faraone Aug 2005

Investigation Of Laser Beam Induced Current Techniques For Heterojunction Photodiode Characterization, Weifu Fang, David A. Redfern, Kazufumi Ito, G. Bahir, Charles A. Musca, John M. Dell, Lorenzo Faraone

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A reduced model is developed that has significant advantages over the full drift-diffusion model for the simulation of laser beam-induced current (LBIC) signals in the presence of heterojunctions. The model determines the contribution to the LBIC signal that would occur from photogeneration at any position within the semiconductor, and is particularly useful for heterostructures where judicious choice of illumination wavelength can result in photogeneration at different depths within the device structure. The reduced model is used to examine the basic features of LBIC as applied to two types of planar P-n HgCdTe heterojunction photodiode structures. In particular, the question of …

Computational Optical Biopsy, Yi Li, Ming Jiang, Ge Wang Jun 2005

Computational Optical Biopsy, Yi Li, Ming Jiang, Ge Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Optical molecular imaging is based on fluorescence or bioluminescence, and hindered by photon scattering in the tissue, especially in patient studies. Here we propose a computational optical biopsy (COB) approach to localize and quantify a light source deep inside a subject. In contrast to existing optical biopsy techniques, our scheme is to collect optical signals directly from a region of interest along one or multiple biopsy paths in a subject, and then compute features of an underlying light source distribution. In this paper, we formulate this inverse problem in the framework of diffusion approximation, demonstrate the solution uniqueness properties in …
