Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Agegnehu Atena, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper the lubrication-type dynamical model is developed of a molten, pulsed laser-irradiated metallic film. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single beam or interfering beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the peak laser beam intensity, the film optical thickness, the Biot and …

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler Jan 2009

Comic Books That Teach Mathematics, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

During the 2008--2009 academic year, the author embarked on an extremely non-standard curriculum path: developing comic books with embedded mathematics appropriate for 3rd through 6th grade students. With the help of an education professor to measure impact, an elementary-school principal, and talented undergraduate illustrators, this project came to fruition and the comics were implemented in elementary classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary in the Warren County School System in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This manuscript gives the history of this idea, the difficulties of developing the content of the comics and getting them illustrated, and the implementation plan in the school.

Coarser Connected Topologies And Non-Normality Points, Lynne Yengulalp Jan 2009

Coarser Connected Topologies And Non-Normality Points, Lynne Yengulalp

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate two topics, coarser connected topologies and non-normality points. The motivating question in the first topic is:

Question 0.0.1. When does a space have a coarser connected topology with a nice topological property? We will discuss some results when the property is Hausdorff and prove that if X is a non-compact metric space that has weight at least c, then it has a coarser connected metrizable topology. The second topic is concerned with the following question:

Question 0.0.2. When is a point y ∈ β X\X a non-normality point of β X\X? We will discuss the question in the …

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay Nov 2008

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.

Generalization Of The Hybrid Logistic Model For More Than One Rare Risk Factor, Mamunur Rashid Jan 2008

Generalization Of The Hybrid Logistic Model For More Than One Rare Risk Factor, Mamunur Rashid

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Logistic models are commonly used to analyze case-control data. For case-control studies, if there tends be rare disease in the control group with the risk factors, then the estimation procedure using logistic regression model for such factors becomes difficult. To overcome such situation, Chen et. al. (2003) proposed a hybrid logistic model in which they first estimate the problematic risk factor assuming that proportions having disease of such risk factor are treated equal for all permissible strata of the other risk factors, and then the residual of the risk factors are modeled by using logistic regression model. The purpose of …

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner Jan 2008

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film surface undergoes phase separation into a …

Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Mikhail Khenner Jan 2008

Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Dynamics of a thin dewetting liquid film on a vertically oscillating substrate is considered. We assume moderate vibration frequency and large (compared to the mean film thickness) vibration amplitude. Using the lubrication approximation and the averaging method, we formulate the coupled sets of equations governing the pulsatile and the averaged fluid flows in the film, and then derive the nonlinear amplitude equation for the averaged film thickness. We show that there exists a window in the frequency-amplitude domain where the parametric and shear-flow instabilities of the pulsatile flow do not emerge. As a consequence, in this window the averaged description …

An Order Model For Infinite Classical States, Joe Mashburn Jan 2008

An Order Model For Infinite Classical States, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In 2002 Coecke and Martin (Research Report PRG-RR-02-07, Oxford University Computing Laboratory,2002) created a model for the finite classical and quantum states in physics. This model is based on a type of ordered set which is standard in the study of information systems. It allows the information content of its elements to be compared and measured. Their work is extended to a model for the infinite classical states. These are the states which result when an observable is applied to a quantum system. When this extended order is restricted to a finite number of coordinates, the model of Coecke and …

Qualitative Properties Of Nonlinear Volterra Integral Equations, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer Jan 2008

Qualitative Properties Of Nonlinear Volterra Integral Equations, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, the contraction mapping principle and Liapunov's method are used to study qualitative properties of nonlinear Volterra equations of the form x(t)=a(t)−∫t0C(t,s)g(s,x(s))ds,t≥0. In particular, the existence of bounded solutions and solutions with various Lp properties are studied under suitable conditions on the functions involved with this equation.

On A Class Of Backward Mckean-Vlasov Stochastic Equations In Hilbert Space: Existence And Convergence Properties, Nazim I. Mahmudov, Mark A. Mckibben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This investigation is devoted to the study of a class of abstract first-order backward McKean-Vlasov stochastic evolution equations in a Hilbert space. Results concerning the existence and uniqueness of solutions and the convergence of an approximating sequence of solutions (and corresponding probability measures) are established. Examples that illustrate the abstract theory are also provided.

On Backward Stochastic Evolution Equations In Hilbert Space And Optimal Control, Nazim I. Mahmudov, Mark A. Mckibben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper a new result on the existence and uniqueness of the adapted solution to a backward stochastic evolution equation in Hilbert spaces under non Lipschitz condition is established. The applicability of this result is then illustrated in a discussion of some concrete backward stochastic partial differential equation. Furthermore, stochastic maximum principle for optimal control problems of stochastic systems governed by backward stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces is obtained.

A Spectral Order For Infinite Dimensional Quantum Spaces: A Preliminary Report, Joe Mashburn Apr 2007

A Spectral Order For Infinite Dimensional Quantum Spaces: A Preliminary Report, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In 2002 Coecke and Martin created a Bayesian order for the finite dimensional spaces of classical states in physics and used this to define a similar order, the spectral order on the finite dimensional quantum states. These orders gave the spaces a structure similar to that of a domain. This allows for measuring information content of states and for determining which partial states are approximations of which pure states. In a previous paper the author extended the Bayesian order to infinite dimensional spaces of classical states. The order on infinite dimensional spaces retains many of the characteristics important to physics, …

A "Sound" Approach To Fourier Transforms: Using Music To Teach Trigonometry, Bruce Kessler Jan 2007

A "Sound" Approach To Fourier Transforms: Using Music To Teach Trigonometry, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

If a large number of educated people were asked, ``What was your most exciting class?'', odds are that very few of them would answer ``Trigonometry.'' The subject is generally presented in a less-than-exciting fashion, with the repeated caveat that ``you'll need this when you take calculus,'' or ``this has lots of applications'' without ever really seeing many of them. This manuscript addresses how the author is trying to change this tradition by exposing casual students from kindergarten to college to Joseph Fourier's secret, that nearly any function can be built out of sine and cosine curves. And music serves as …

A Comparison Of Three Topologies On Ordered Sets, Joe Mashburn Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Three Topologies On Ordered Sets, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We introduce two new topologies on ordered sets: the way below topology and weakly way below topology. These are similar in definition to the Scott topology, but are very different if the set is not continuous. The basic properties of these three topologies are compared. We will show that while domain representable spaces must be Baire, this is not the case with the new topologies.

Balanced Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors Using Fractal Function Macroelements On [0,1], Bruce Kessler Nov 2006

Balanced Biorthogonal Scaling Vectors Using Fractal Function Macroelements On [0,1], Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Geronimo, Hardin, et al have previously constructed orthogonal and biorthogonal scaling vectors by extending a spline scaling vector with functions supported on $[0,1]$. Many of these constructions occurred before the concept of balanced scaling vectors was introduced. This paper will show that adding functions on $[0,1]$ is insufficient for extending spline scaling vectors to scaling vectors that are both orthogonal and balanced. We are able, however, to use this technique to extend spline scaling vectors to balanced, biorthogonal scaling vectors, and we provide two large classes of this type of scaling vector, with approximation order two and three, respectively, with …

Abstract Semilinear Itó-Volterra Integro-Differential Stochastic Evolution Equations, David N. Keck, Mark A. Mckibben Nov 2006

Abstract Semilinear Itó-Volterra Integro-Differential Stochastic Evolution Equations, David N. Keck, Mark A. Mckibben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider a class of abstract semilinear stochastic Volterra integrodifferential equations in a real separable Hilbert space. The global existence and uniqueness of a mild solution, as well as a perturbation result, are established under the so-called Caratheodory growth conditions on the nonlinearities. An approximation result is then established, followed by an analogous result concerning a so-called McKean-Vlasov integrodi fferential equation, and then a brief commentary on the extension of the main results to the time-dependent case. The paper ends with a discussion of some concrete examples to illustrate the abstract theory.

On T-Pure And Almost Pure Exact Sequences Of Lca Groups, Peter Loth Nov 2006

On T-Pure And Almost Pure Exact Sequences Of Lca Groups, Peter Loth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A proper short exact sequence in the category of locally compact abelian groups is said to be t-pure if φ(A) is a topologically pure subgroup of B, that is, if for all positive integers n. We establish conditions under which t-pure exact sequences split and determine those locally compact abelian groups K ⊕ D (where K is compactly generated and D is discrete) which are t-pure injective or t-pure projective. Calling the extension (*) almost pure if for all positive integers n, we obtain a complete description of the almost pure injectives and almost pure projectives in the category of …

Phase Transitions And Change Of Type In Low-Temperature Heat, Ralph A. Saxton, Katarzyna Saxton Aug 2006

Phase Transitions And Change Of Type In Low-Temperature Heat, Ralph A. Saxton, Katarzyna Saxton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Classical heat pulse experiments have shown heat to propagate in waves through crystalline materials at temperatures close to absolute zero. With increasing temperature, these waves slow down and finally disappear, to be replaced by diffusive heat propagation. Several features surrounding this phenomenon are examined in this work. The model used switches between an internal parameter (or extended thermodynamics) description and a classical (linear or nonlinear) Fourier law setting. This leads to a hyperbolic-parabolic change of type, which allows wavelike features to appear beneath the transition temperature and diffusion above. We examine the region around and immediately below the transition temperature, …

Abstract Second-Order Damped Mckean-Vlasov Stochastic Evolution Equations, N. I. Mahmudov, Mark A. Mckibben Apr 2006

Abstract Second-Order Damped Mckean-Vlasov Stochastic Evolution Equations, N. I. Mahmudov, Mark A. Mckibben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We establish results concerning the global existence, uniqueness, approximate and exact controllability of mild solutions for a class of abstract second-order stochastic evolution equations in a real separable Hilbert space in which we allow the nonlinearities at a given time t to depend not only on the state of the solution at time t, but also on the corresponding probability distribution at time t. First-order equations of McKean-Vlasov type were first analyzed in the finite dimensional setting when studying diffusion processes, and then subsequently extended to the Hilbert space setting. The current manuscript provides a formulation of such …

Balanced Scaling Vectors Using Linear Combinations Of Existing Scaling Vectors, Bruce Kessler Jan 2005

Balanced Scaling Vectors Using Linear Combinations Of Existing Scaling Vectors, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The majority of the research done into creating balanced multiwavelets has involved establishing a series of conditions on the mask of the new scaling vector by solving a large nonlinear system. The result is a completely different new function vector solution to the dilation equation with the new matrix coefficients. The research presented here will show a way to use previously-constructed orthonormal scaling vectors to generate equivalent orthonormal scaling vectors that are balanced up to the approximation order of the previous scaling vector. The technique uses linear combinations of the integer translates of the previous-constructed scaling vector.

Some Comments On: Existence Of Solutions Of Abstract Nonlinear Second-Order Neutral Functional Integrodifferential Equations, Eduardo Hernandez, Mark A. Mckibben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We establish the existence of mild solutions for a class of abstract second-order partial neutral functional integro-differential equations with infinite delay in a Banach space using the theory of cosine families of bounded linear operators and Schaefer's fixed-point theorem.

Boundedness And Stability In Nonlinear Delay Difference Equations Employing Fixed Point Theory, Muhammad Islam, Ernest Yankson Jan 2005

Boundedness And Stability In Nonlinear Delay Difference Equations Employing Fixed Point Theory, Muhammad Islam, Ernest Yankson

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper we study stability and boundedness of the nonlinear difference equation

x(t+1)=a(t)x(t)+c(t)Δx(t−g(t))+q(x(t),x(t−g(t))).

In particular we study equi-boundedness of solutions and the stability of the zero solution of this equation. Fixed point theorems are used in the analysis.
