We provide finite sample guarantees for the classical Chow-Liu algorithm (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 1968) to learn a tree-structured graphical model of a distribution. For a distribution P on Σn and a tree T on n nodes, we say T is an ε-approximate tree for P if there is a T-structured distribution Q such that D(P || Q) is at most ε more than the best possible tree-structured distribution for P. We investigate containment statements between symbolic and ordinary powers and bounds on the Waldschmidt constant of defining ideals of points in projective spaces. We establish the stable Harbourne conjecture for the defining ideal of a general set of points. We also prove Chudnovsky’s Conjecture and the stable version of the Harbourne–Huneke containment conjectures for a general set of sufficiently many points.

We investigate Demailly’s Conjecture for a general set of sufficiently many points. Demailly’s Conjecture generalizes Chudnovsky’s Conjecture in providing a lower bound for the Waldschmidt constant of a set of points in projective space. We also study a containment between symbolic and ordinary powers conjectured by Harbourne and Huneke that in particular implies Demailly’s bound, and prove that a general version of that containment holds for generic determinantal ideals and defining ideals of star configurations.

Fracture is one of the main mechanisms of structural failure. Corroded surfaces with chemically-induced damage are, notably, potential sites for crack initiation and propagation in metals, which can lead to catastrophic failure of structures. Despite some progress in simulating fracture and damage using classical models, realistic prediction of complex damage progression and failure has been out of reach for many decades. Peridynamics (PD), a nonlocal theory introduced in 2000, opened up new avenues in modeling material degradation and failure. A local ring R is regular if and only if every finitely generated R-module has finite projective dimension. Moreover, the residue field k is a test module: R is regular if and only if k has finite projective dimension. This characterization can be extended to the bounded derived category Df(R), which contains only small objects if and only if R is regular. Recent results of Pollitz, completing work initiated by Dwyer-Greenlees-Iyengar, yield an analogous characterization for complete intersections: R is a complete intersection if and only if every object in Df(R) is proxy small. On The Bounded Negativity Conjecture And Singular Plane Curves, Alexandru Dimca, Brian Harbourne, Gabriel Sticlaru

There are no known failures of Bounded Negativity in characteristic 0. In the light of recent work showing the Bounded Negativity Conjecture fails in positive characteristics for rational surfaces, we propose new characteristic free conjectures as a replacement. We also develop bounds on numerical characteristics of curves constraining their negativity. For example, we show that the H-constant of a rational curve C with at most 9 singular points satisfies H(C) > -2 regardless of the characteristic.

Ecologists have used integral projection models (IPMs) to study fish and other animals which continue to grow throughout their lives. Such animals cannot shrink, since they have bony skeletons; a mathematical consequence of this is that the kernel of the integral projection operator T is unbounded, and the operator is not compact. A priori, it is unclear whether these IPMs have an asymptotic growth rate λ, or a stable-stage distribution ψ. In the case of a compact operator, these quantities are its spectral radius and the associated eigenvector, respectively. In this note we provide a generalization for the definition of a trisection of a 4-manifold with boundary. We demonstrate the utility of this more general definition by finding a trisection diagram for the Cacime Surface, and also by finding a trisection-theoretic way to perform logarithmic surgery. In addition, we describe how to perform 1-surgery on closed trisections. The insight gained from this description leads us to the classification of an infinite family of genus three trisections. We include an appendix where we extend two classic results for relative trisections for the case when the trisection surface is closed.

Building on previous work by the same authors, we show that certain ideals defining Gorenstein rings have expected resurgence, and thus satisfy the stable Harbourne Conjecture. In prime characteristic, we can take any radical ideal defining a Gorenstein ring in a regular ring, provided its symbolic powers are given by saturations with the maximal ideal. While this property is not suitable for reduction to characteristic p, we show that a similar result holds in equicharacteristic 0 under the additional hypothesis that the symbolic Rees algebra of I is noetherian.

The fitness of an annual plant can be thought of as how much fruit is produced by the end of its growing season. Under the assumption that annual plants grow to maximize fitness, we can use techniques from optimal control theory to understand this process. We introduce two models for resource allocation in annual plants which extend classical work by Iwasa and Roughgarden to a case where both carbohydrates and mineral nutrients are allocated to shoots, roots, and fruits in annual plants. We introduce the notion of a Cartan envelope for a regular inclusion (C,Ɗ). When a Cartan envelope exists, it is the unique, minimal Cartan pair into which (C,Ɗ) regularly embeds. We prove a Cartan envelope exists if and only if (C,Ɗ) has the unique faithful pseudo-expectation property and also give a characterization of the Cartan envelope using the ideal intersection property.

We give explicit criteria that imply the resurgence of a self-radical ideal in a regular ring is strictly smaller than its codimension, which in turn implies that the stable version of Harbourne's conjecture holds for such ideals. This criterion is used to give several explicit families of such ideals, including the defining ideals of space monomial curves. Other results generalize known theorems concerning when the third symbolic power is in the square of an ideal, and a strong resurgence bound for some classes of space monomial curves

The notion of von Neumann equivalence (vNE), which encapsulates both measure equivalence and W* -equivalence, was introduced recently by Ishan, Peterson, and Ruth (2019). They have shown that many analytic properties, such as amenability, property (T), the Haagerup property, and proper proximality are preserved under von Neumann equivalence. In this article, we expand on the list of properties that are stable under von Neumann equivalence, and prove that weak amenability, weak Haagerup property, and the approximation property (AP) are von Neumann equivalence invariants. This article studies a boundary value problem for a nonlinear Ca- puto nabla fractional difference equation. We obtain quadratic convergence results for this equation using the generalized quasi-linearization method. Fur- ther, we obtain the convergence of the sequences is potentially improved by the Gauss-Seidel method. A numerical example illustrates our main results.

One quarter of veterans returning from the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War have developed Gulf War Illness (GWI) with chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Exertion leads to characteristic, delayed onset exacerbations that are not relieved by sleep. We have modeled exertional exhaustion by comparing magnetic resonance images from before and after submaximal exercise. One third of the 27 GWI participants had brain stem atrophy and developed postural tachycardia after exercise (START: Stress Test Activated Reversible Tachycardia). Let A be a C*-algebra and let D be a Cartan subalgebra of A. We study the following question: if B is a C*-algebra such that D B A, is D a Cartan subalgebra of B? We give a positive answer in two cases: the case when there is a faithful conditional expectation from A onto B, and the case when A is nuclear and D is a C*-diagonal of A. Insecticides play a critical role in agricultural productivity. However, insecticides impose selective pressures on insect populations, so the Darwinian principles of natural selection predict that resistance to the insecticide is likely to form in the insect populations. Insecticide resistance, in turn, severely reduces the utility of the insecticides being used. Thus there is a strong economic incentive to reduce the rate of resistance evolution. Moreover, resistance evolution represents an example of evolution under novel selective pressures, so its study contributes to the fundamental understanding of evolutionary theory.

Despite widespread calls for the incorporation of mathematical modeling into the undergraduate biology curriculum, there is lack of a common understanding around the definition of modeling, which inhibits progress. In this paper, we extend the “Rule-of-Four,” initially used in calculus reform efforts, to a “Rule-of-Five” framework for models and modeling that is inclusive of varying disciplinary definitions of each. This unifying framework allows us to both build on strengths that each discipline and its students bring, but also identify gaps in modeling activities practiced by each discipline. We also discuss benefits to student learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.
