The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System And The Gauge Group Action, Georgi Grahovski Jan 2012

The Generalised Zakharov-Shabat System And The Gauge Group Action, Georgi Grahovski

Articles

The generalized Zakharov–Shabat systems with complex-valued non-regular Cartan elements and the systems studied by Caudrey, Beals and Coifman (CBC systems) and their gauge equivalent are studied. This study includes: the properties of fundamental analytical solutions (FAS) for the gauge-equivalent to CBC systems and the minimal set of scattering data; the description of the class of nonlinear evolutionary equations, solvable by the inverse scattering method, and the recursion operator, related to such systems; the hierarchies of Hamiltonian structures. The results are illustrated on the example of the multi-component nonlinear Schr¨odinger (MNLS) equations and the corresponding gauge-equivalent multi-component Heisenberg ferromagnetic (MHF) type …

Singular Solutions Of Coss-Coupled Epdiff Equations: Waltzing Peakons And Compacton Pairs, Colin Cotter, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival

Conference papers

We introduce EPDiff equations as Euler-Poincare´ equations related to Lagrangian provided by a metric, invariant under the Lie Group Diff(Rn). Then we proceed with a particular form of EPDiff equations, a cross coupled two-component system of Camassa-Holm type. The system has a new type of peakon solutions, 'waltzing' peakons and compacton pairs.

Integrable Models For Shallow Water With Energy Dependent Spectral Problems, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons Jan 2012

Integrable Models For Shallow Water With Energy Dependent Spectral Problems, Rossen Ivanov, Tony Lyons

Articles

We study the inverse problem for the so-called operators with energy depending potentials. In particular, we study spectral operators with quadratic dependence on the spectral parameter. The corresponding hierarchy of integrable equations includes the Kaup–Boussinesq equation. We formulate the inverse problem as a Riemann–Hilbert problem with a Z2 reduction group. The soliton solutions are explicitly obtained.

On The N-Wave Equations And Soliton Interactions In Two And Three Dimensions, Vladimir S. Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Assen V. Kyuldjiev

Articles

Several important examples of the N-wave equations are studied. These integrable equations can be linearized by formulation of the inverse scattering as a local Riemann–Hilbert problem (RHP). Several nontrivial reductions are presented. Such reductions can be applied to the generic N-wave equations but mainly the 3- and 4-wave interactions are presented as examples. Their one and two-soliton solutions are derived and their soliton interactions are analyzed. It is shown that additional reductions may lead to new types of soliton solutions. In particular the 4-wave equations with Z2xZ2 reduction group allow breather-like solitons. Finally it is demonstrated that …

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev Sep 2011

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev

Articles

The geodesic equations of a class of right invariant metrics on the semi-direct product of two Diff(S) groups are studied. The equations are explicitly described, they have the form of a system of coupled equations of Camassa-Holm type and possess singular (peakon) solutions. Their integrability is further investigated, however no compatible bi-Hamiltonian structures on the corresponding dual Lie algebra are found.

Smooth And Peaked Solitons Of The Camassa-Holm Equation And Applications, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov Jul 2011

Smooth And Peaked Solitons Of The Camassa-Holm Equation And Applications, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

The relations between smooth and peaked soliton solutions are reviewed for the Camassa- Holm (CH) shallow water wave equation in one spatial dimension. The canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the CH equation in action-angle variables is expressed for solitons by using the scattering data for its associated isospectral eigenvalue problem, rephrased as a Riemann- Hilbert problem. The momentum map from the action-angle scattering variables T(TN) to the flow momentum (X) provides the Eulerian representation of the N-soliton solution of CH in terms of the scattering data and squared eigenfunctions of its isospectral eigenvalue problem. The …

A Parametric Analysis Of Domestic Electricity Consumption Patterns In Ireland, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon

Conference Papers

This paper reports findings from a study of electrical load profiles obtained from a survey of a representative cross section of approximately 4,000 Irish dwellings. Electricity demand was recorded at half-hourly intervals for each dwelling over a six month period from 1st July 2009 to 31st December 2009. Descriptive statistics are shown for each electrical parameter such as mean, maximum demand, load factor and time of use (ToU) of electricity consumption. The mean power demand and daily mean load factor of the sample was 0.512kW and 23.43% respectively for all dwellings over the monitoring period. A mean daily maximum demand …

On The (Non)-Integrability Of The Perturbed Kdv Hierarchy With Generic Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

Non-holonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called "squared solutions" (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to perturbed models with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV equation. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV hierarchy with generic self-consistent sources are analyzed. This allows one to formulate a set of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve the integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle variables …

We consider the background to the approach taken and present examples of the results obtained to date.

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2011

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

This paper presents a generalized model for simulating wave fields associated with the sea surface. This includes the case when `freak waves' may occur through an effect compounded in the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation. After providing brief introductions to linear sea wave models, `freak waves' and the linear and nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we present a unified model that provides for a piecewise continuous transition from a linear to a nonlinear state. This is based on introducing a fractional time derivative to develop a fractional nonlinear partial differential equation with a stochastic source function. In order to explore the characteristics of …

Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney Jan 2011

Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney

Conference papers

Nonlinear sea waves generated by the wind, including freak waves, are considered to be phenomena that can be modelled using the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation, for example. However, there is a problem with this approach which is that sea surface waves, driven by wind speeds of varying strength, must be considered to be composed of two distinct types, namely, linear waves and nonlinear waves. In this paper, we consider a different approach to modelling ‘nonlinear’ waves that is based on a solution to the linear wave equation under a low-gradient, phase-only condition. This approach is entirely compatible with the fluid …

Estimating The Efficacy Of Mild Heating Processes Taking Into Account Microbial Non-Linearities: A Case Study On The Thermisation Of A Food Simulant, Vasilis Valdramidis, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen, Alain Kondjoyan, Jan Van Impe Jan 2011

Estimating The Efficacy Of Mild Heating Processes Taking Into Account Microbial Non-Linearities: A Case Study On The Thermisation Of A Food Simulant, Vasilis Valdramidis, Brijesh Tiwari, Patrick J. Cullen, Alain Kondjoyan, Jan Van Impe

Articles

Traditional and novel approaches for the calculation of the heat treatment efficiency are compared in this work. The Mild Heat value (MH-value), an alternative approach to the commonly used sterilisation, pasteurisation and cook value (F, P, C–value), is calculated to estimate the efficiency of a mild heat process. MH-value is the time needed to achieve a predefined microbial reduction at a reference temperature and a known thermal resistant constant, z, for log-linear or specific types of non log-linear microbial inactivation kinetics. An illustrative example is given in which microbial inactivation data of Listeria innocua CLIP 20-595 are used for estimating …

The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon Jul 2010

The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon

Conference Papers

Micro-generation technologies such as photovoltaics and micro-wind power are becoming increasing popular among homeowners, mainly a result of policy support mechanisms helping to improve cost competiveness as compared to traditional fossil fuel generation. National government strategies to reduce electricity demand generated from fossil fuels and to meet European Union 20/20 targets is driving this change. However, the real performance of these technologies in a domestic setting is not often known as high time resolution models for domestic electricity load profiles are not readily available. As a result, projections in terms of reducing electricity demand and financial paybacks for these micro-generation …

The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy And Soliton Perturbations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2010

The Camassa-Holm Hierarchy And Soliton Perturbations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

The theory of soliton perturbations is considered. The focus is on the usefulness of the so-called Generalised Fourier Transform (GFT). This is a method that involves expansions over the complete basis of “squared solutions” of the spectral problem, associated to the soliton equation. The Inverse Scattering Transform for the corresponding hierarchy of soliton equations can be viewed as a GFT where the expansions of the solutions have generalised Fourier coefficients given by the scattering data. The GFT provides a natural setting for the analysis of small perturbations to an integrable equation: starting from a purely soliton solution one can ’modify’ …

Two Soliton Interactions Of Bd.I Multicomponent Nls Equations And Their Gauge Equivalent, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski

Conference papers

Using the dressing Zakharov-Shabat method we re-derive the effects of the two-soliton interactions for the MNLS equations related to the BD.I-type symmetric spaces. Next we generalize this analysis for the Heisenberg ferromagnet type equations, gauge equivalent to MNLS.

Multi–Component Nls Models On Symmetric Spaces: Spectral Properties Versus Representations Theory, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski Jan 2010

Multi–Component Nls Models On Symmetric Spaces: Spectral Properties Versus Representations Theory, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski

Articles

The algebraic structure and the spectral properties of a special class of multicomponent NLS equations, related to the symmetric spaces of BD.I-type are analyzed. The focus of the study is on the spectral theory of the associated Lax operator to these nonlinear evolutionary equations for different fundamental representations of the underlying simple Lie algebra g. Special attention is paid to the spinor representation of the orthogonal Lie algebras of B type.

Quantitative Modelling Approaches For Ascorbic Acid Degradation And Non-Enzymatic Browning Of Orange Juice During Ultrasound Processing, Vasilis Valdramidis, Patrick J. Cullen, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O’Donnell Jan 2010

Quantitative Modelling Approaches For Ascorbic Acid Degradation And Non-Enzymatic Browning Of Orange Juice During Ultrasound Processing, Vasilis Valdramidis, Patrick J. Cullen, Brijesh Tiwari, Colm O’Donnell

Articles

The objective of this study was to develop a deterministic modelling approach for non-enzymatic browning (NEB) and ascorbic acid (AA) degradation in orange juice during ultrasound processing. Freshly squeezed orange juice was sonicated using a 1,500 W ultrasonic processor at a constant frequency of 20 kHz and processing variables of amplitude level (24.4 – 61.0 μm), temperature (5 – 30 oC) and time (0 – 10 min). The rate constants of the NEB and AA were estimated by a primary model (zero and first order) while their relationship with respect to the processing factors was tested for a number of …

Electromagnetic Scattering Solutions For Digital Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge Nov 2009

Electromagnetic Scattering Solutions For Digital Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge

Other resources

Electromagnetic scattering theory is fundamental to understanding the interaction between electromagnetic waves and inhomogeneous dielectric materials. The theory unpins the engineering of electromagnetic imaging systems over a broad range of frequencies, from optics to radio and microwave imaging, for example. Developing accurate scattering models is particularly important in the field of image understanding and the interpretation of electromagnetic signals generated by scattering events. To this end there are a number of approaches that can be taken. For relatively simple geometric configurations, approximation methods are used to develop a transformation from the object plane (where scattering events take place) to the …

Self-Authentication Of Audio Signals By Chirp Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle Sep 2009

Self-Authentication Of Audio Signals By Chirp Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper discusses a new approach to ‘watermarking’ digital signals using linear frequency modulated or ‘chirp’ coding. The principles underlying this approach are based on the use of a matched filter to provide a reconstruction of a chirped code that is uniquely robust in the case of signals with very low signal-to-noise ratios. Chirp coding for authenticating data is generic in the sense that it can be used for a range of data types and applications (the authentication of speech and audio signals, for example). The theoretical and computational aspects of the matched filter and the properties of a chirp …

Covariant Relativistic Quantum Mechanics Analysis Of A Linearly Accelerated Scalar Particle, Karol Mcdonald May 2009

Covariant Relativistic Quantum Mechanics Analysis Of A Linearly Accelerated Scalar Particle, Karol Mcdonald

Doctoral

A covariant formalism of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics is demonstrated, through it's de- velopment and application. The Relativistic Case is shown to follow a similar structure to the established Non-Relativistic formalism. Reasons for preferring the new covariant formalism over the established method are presented. Solutions to the case of a scalar particle in a one-dimensional field are presented. The Relativistic Energy Eigenfunction is derived. Results are generated from initial Gaussian states via a Green's Function method. A Green's Function for the system is derived and applied. The solution to the Quantum System is shown to follow a scaled version of the …

Tight Lower Bound For The Sparse Travelling Salesman Problem, Fredrick Mtenzi May 2009

Tight Lower Bound For The Sparse Travelling Salesman Problem, Fredrick Mtenzi

Conference papers

The Sparse Travelling Salesman Problem (Sparse TSP) which is a variant of the classical Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is the problem of finding the shortest route of the salesman when visiting cities in a region making sure that each city is visited at least once and returning home at the end. In the Sparse TSP, the distance between cities may not obey the triangle inequality; this makes the use of algorithms and formulations designed for the TSP to require modifications in order to produce near-optimal results. A lower bound for optmisation problems gives us the quality guarantee of the near-optimal …

Poisson Structures Of Equations Associated With Groups Of Diffeomorphisms, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2009

Poisson Structures Of Equations Associated With Groups Of Diffeomorphisms, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

A class of equations describing the geodesic flow for a right-invariant metric on the group of diffeomorphisms of Rn is reviewed from the viewpoint of their Lie-Poisson structures. A subclass of these equations is analogous to the Euler equations in hydrodynamics (for n = 3), preserving the volume element of the domain of fluid flow. An example in n = 1 dimension is the Camassa-Holm equation, which is a geodesic flow equation on the group of diffeomorphisms, preserving the H1 metric.

Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves, Rossen Ivanov

Conference papers

Our aim is to describe the derivation of shallow water model equations for the constant vorticity case and to demonstrate how these equations can be related to two integrable systems: a two component integrable generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation and the Kaup - Boussinesq system.

Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2009

Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

In this contribution we describe the role of several two-component integrable systems in the classical problem of shallow water waves. The starting point in our derivation is the Euler equation for an incompressible fluid, the equation of mass conservation, the simplest bottom and surface conditions and the constant vorticity condition. The approximate model equations are generated by introduction of suitable scalings and by truncating asymptotic expansions of the quantities to appropriate order. The so obtained equations can be related to three different integrable systems: a two component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, the Zakharov-Ito system and the Kaup-Boussinesq system. The …

Converging Flow Between Coaxial Cones, O. Hall, A. D. Gilbert, C. P. Hills Jan 2009

Converging Flow Between Coaxial Cones, O. Hall, A. D. Gilbert, C. P. Hills

Articles

Fluid flow governed by the Navier-Stokes equation is considered in a domain bounded by two cones with the same axis. In the first, 'non-parallel' case, the two cones have the same apex and different angles θ = α and β in spherical polar coordinates (r, θ, φ). In the second, 'parallel' case, the two cones have the same opening angle α, parallel walls separated by a gap h and apices separated by a distance h/sinα. Flows are driven by a source Q at the origin, the apex of the lower cone in the parallel case. The Stokes solution for the …
