Flocks And Formations, J. J. P. Veerman, Gerardo Lafferriere, John S. Caughman Iv, A. Williams

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Given a large number (the “flock”) of moving physical objects, we investigate physically reasonable mechanisms of influencing their orbits in such a way that they move along a prescribed course and in a prescribed and fixed configuration (or “in formation”). Each agent is programmed to see the position and velocity of a certain number of others. This flow of information from one agent to another defines a fixed directed (loopless) graph in which the agents are represented by the vertices. This graph is called the communication graph. To be able to fly in formation, an agent tries to match the …

Incompressible Finite Elements Via Hybridization. Part I: The Stokes System In Two Space Dimensions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2005

Incompressible Finite Elements Via Hybridization. Part I: The Stokes System In Two Space Dimensions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we introduce a new and efficient way to compute exactly divergence-free velocity approximations for the Stokes equations in two space dimensions. We begin by considering a mixed method that provides an exactly divergence-free approximation of the velocity and a continuous approximation of the vorticity. We then rewrite this method solely in terms of the tangential fluid velocity and the pressure on mesh edges by means of a new hybridization technique. This novel formulation bypasses the difficult task of constructing an exactly divergence-free basis for velocity approximations. Moreover, the discrete system resulting from our method has fewer degrees …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this note, we provide a conveniently implementable basis for simplicial Nédélec spaces of any order in any space dimension. The main feature of the basis is that it is expressed solely in terms of the barycentric coordinates of the simplex.

Fix nonnegative integers n1,…,nd and let L denote the lattice of integer points (a1,…,ad)∈Zd satisfying 0⩽ai⩽ni for 1⩽i⩽d. Let L be partially ordered by the usual dominance ordering. In this paper we offer combinatorial derivations of a number of results concerning chains in L. In particular, the results obtained are established without recourse to generating functions or recurrence relations. We begin with an elementary derivation of the number of chains in L of a given size, from which one can deduce the classical expression for the total number …

Stable Motions Of Vehicle Formations, Anca Williams, Gerardo Lafferriere, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2005

Stable Motions Of Vehicle Formations, Anca Williams, Gerardo Lafferriere, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate stable maneuvers for a group of autonomous vehicles while moving in formation. The allowed decentralized feeback laws are factored through the Laplacian matrix of the communication graph. We show that such laws allow for stable circular or elliptical motions for certain vehicle dynamics. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on the feedback gains and the dynamic parameters for convergence to formation. In particular, we prove that for undirected graphs there exist feedback gains that stabilize rotational (or elliptical) motions of arbitrary radius (or eceentricity). In the directed graph case we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the curvature …

A Solvable Model For Gravity Driven Granular Dynamics, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2005

A Solvable Model For Gravity Driven Granular Dynamics, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We discuss a toy model to study the dynamics of individual particles in avalanches. The model describes a particle launched from an inclined infinite staircase. The particle is not allowed to bounce when it collides with the staircase. During the collision, the particle loses some energy, and after that slides on to the end of the step it landed on. The process then repeats itself. The dynamics of this no-bounce model can essentially be completely understood. Partial versions of some results were stated and argued in previous work. Here we give a full description together with all the proofs. We …

Analysis Of A Multigrid Algorithm For Time Harmonic Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak, Leszek Demkowicz Jan 2004

Analysis Of A Multigrid Algorithm For Time Harmonic Maxwell Equations, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak, Leszek Demkowicz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper considers a multigrid algorithm suitable for efficient solution of indefinite linear systems arising from finite element discretization of time harmonic Maxwell equations. In particular, a "backslash" multigrid cycle is proven to converge at rates independent of refinement level if certain indefinite block smoothers are used. The method of analysis involves comparing the multigrid error reduction operator with that of a related positive definite multigrid operator. This idea has previously been used in multigrid analysis of indefinite second order elliptic problems. However, the Maxwell application involves a nonelliptic indefinite operator. With the help of a few new estimates, the …

Decentralized Control Of Vehicle Formations, Gerardo Lafferriere, Anca Williams, John S. Caughman Iv, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2004

Decentralized Control Of Vehicle Formations, Gerardo Lafferriere, Anca Williams, John S. Caughman Iv, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates a method for decentralized stabilization of vehicle formations using techniques from algebraic graph theory. The vehicles exchange information according to a pre-specified communication digraph, G. A feedback control is designed using relative information between a vehicle and its in-neighbors in G. We prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for an appropriate decentralized linear stabilizing feedback to exist is that G has a rooted directed spanning tree. We show the direct relationship between the rate of convergence to formation and the eigenvalues of the (directed) Laplacian of G. Various special situations are discussed, including …

A Characterization Of Hybridized Mixed Methods For Second Order Elliptic Problems, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2004

A Characterization Of Hybridized Mixed Methods For Second Order Elliptic Problems, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we give a new characterization of the approximate solution given by hybridized mixed methods for second order self-adjoint elliptic problems. We apply this characterization to obtain an explicit formula for the entries of the matrix equation for the Lagrange multiplier unknowns resulting from hybridization. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which the multipliers of the Raviart–Thomas and the Brezzi–Douglas–Marini methods of similar order are identical.

Quasioptimality Of Some Spectral Mixed Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Leszek Demkowicz Jan 2004

Quasioptimality Of Some Spectral Mixed Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Leszek Demkowicz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we construct a sequence of projectors into certain polynomial spaces satisfying a commuting diagram property with norm bounds independent of the polynomial degree. Using the projectors, we obtain quasioptimality of some spectralmixed methods, including the Raviart–Thomas method and mixed formulations of Maxwell equations. We also prove some discrete Friedrichs type inequalities involving curl.

A Multilevel Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Guido Kanschat Jan 2003

A Multilevel Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Guido Kanschat

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A variable V-cycle preconditioner for an interior penalty finite element discretization for elliptic problems is presented. An analysis under a mild regularity assumption shows that the preconditioner is uniform. The interior penalty method is then combined with a discontinuous Galerkin scheme to arrive at a discretization scheme for an advection-diffusion problem, for which an error estimate is proved. A multigrid algorithm for this method is presented, and numerical experiments indicating its robustness with respect to diffusion coefficient are reported.

A Schwarz Preconditioner For A Hybridized Mixed Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2003

A Schwarz Preconditioner For A Hybridized Mixed Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we provide a Schwarz preconditioner for the hybridized versions of the Raviart-Thomas and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini mixed methods. The preconditioner is for the linear equation for Lagrange multipliers arrived at by eliminating the ux as well as the primal variable. We also prove a condition number estimate for this equation when no preconditioner is used. Although preconditioners for the lowest order case of the Raviart-Thomas method have been constructed previously by exploiting its connection with a nonconforming method, our approach is different, in that we use a new variational characterization of the Lagrange multiplier equation. This allows us to …

Semicontinuity Of Dimension And Measure For Locally Scaling Fractals, L. B. Jonker, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2002

Semicontinuity Of Dimension And Measure For Locally Scaling Fractals, L. B. Jonker, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The basic question of this paper is: If you consider two iterated function systems close to one another in an appropriate topology, are the dimensions of their respective invariant sets close to one another? It is well-known that the Hausdorff dimension (and Lebesgue measure) of the invariant set do not depend continuously on the iterated function system. Our main result is that (with a restriction on the ‘non-conformality’ of the transformations) the Hausdorff dimension is a lower semi-continuous function in the C1- topology of the transformations of the iterated function system. The same question is raised of the …

Single-Particle Model For A Granular Ratchet, Albert J. Bae, Welles Antonio Martinez Morgado, J. J. P. Veerman, Giovani L. Vasconcelos Jan 2002

Single-Particle Model For A Granular Ratchet, Albert J. Bae, Welles Antonio Martinez Morgado, J. J. P. Veerman, Giovani L. Vasconcelos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model for a granular ratchet corresponding to a single grain bouncing off a vertically vibrating sawtooth-shaped base is studied. Depending on the model parameters, horizontal transport is observed in both the preferred and unfavoured directions. A phase diagram is presented indicating the regions in parameter space where the different regimes (no current, normal current, and current reversal) occur.

Dynamics Of A Granular Particle On A Rough Surface With A Staircase Profile, J. J. P. Veerman, F. V. Cunha Jr., G. L. Vasconcelos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model is presented for the motion of a grain down a rough inclined surface with a staircase profile. The model is an extension of an earlier model of ours where we now allow for bouncing, i.e., we consider a non-vanishing normal coefficient of restitution. It is shown that in parameter space there are three regions of interest: (i) a region of smaller inclinations where the orbits are always bounded (and we argue that the particle always stops); (ii) a transition region where halting, periodic and unbounded orbits co-exist; and (iii) a region of large inclinations where no halting …

Numerical examples illustrating the behavior of the method are presented.

Mortar Estimates Independent Of Number Of Subdomains, Jay Gopalakrishnan Jan 2000

Mortar Estimates Independent Of Number Of Subdomains, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The stability and error estimates for the mortar finite element method are well established. This work examines the dependence of constants in these estimates on shape and number of subdomains. By means of a Poincar´e inequality and some scaling arguments, these estimates are found not to deteriorate with increase in number of subdomains.

Multigrid For The Mortar Finite Element Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak Jan 2000

Multigrid For The Mortar Finite Element Method, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A multigrid technique for uniformly preconditioning linear systems arising from a mortar finite element discretization of second order elliptic boundary value problems is described and analyzed. These problems are posed on domains partitioned into subdomains, each of which is independently triangulated in a multilevel fashion. The multilevel mortar finite element spaces based on such triangulations (which need not align across subdomain interfaces) are in general not nested. Suitable grid transfer operators and smoothers are developed which lead to a variable Vcycle preconditioner resulting in a uniformly preconditioned algebraic system. Computational results illustrating the theory are also presented.

Soliton Stability In A Z (2) Field Theory, J. J. P. Veerman, D. Bazeia, Fernando Moraes

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigate the stability of the coupled soliton solutions of a two-component Z(2) vector fieldmodel, in contraposition to similar solutions of a Z(2)×Z(2)model recently introduced. We demonstrate that the coupled soliton solutions of the Z(2) model are classically unstable.

Geometrical Model For A Particle On A Rough Inclined Surface, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1999

Geometrical Model For A Particle On A Rough Inclined Surface, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple geometrical model is presented for the gravity-driven motion of a single particle on a rough inclined surface. Adopting a simple restitution law for the collisions between the particle and the surface, we arrive at a model in which the dynamics is described by a one-dimensional map. This map is studied in detail and it is shown to exhibit several dynamical regimes (steady state, chaotic behavior, and accelerated motion) as the model parameters vary. A phase diagram showing the corresponding domain of existence for these regimes is presented. The model is also found to be in good qualitative agreement …

Hausdorff Dimension Of Boundaries Of Self-Affine Tiles In R N, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1997

Hausdorff Dimension Of Boundaries Of Self-Affine Tiles In R N, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new method to calculate the Hausdorff dimension of a certain class of fractals: boundaries of self-affine tiles. Among the interesting aspects are that even if the affine contraction underlying the iterated function system is not conjugated to a similarity we obtain an upper- and and lower-bound for its Hausdorff dimension. In fact, we obtain the exact value for the dimension if the moduli of the eigenvalues of the underlying affine contraction are all equal (this includes Jordan blocks). The tiles we discuss play an important role in the theory of wavelets. We calculate the dimension for a …

Intersecting Self-Similar Cantor Sets, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1995

Intersecting Self-Similar Cantor Sets, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We define a self-similar set as the (unique) invariant set of an iterated function system of certain contracting affine functions. A topology on them is obtained (essentially) by inducing the C 1- topology of the function space. We prove that the measure function is upper semi-continuous and give examples of discontinuities. We also show that the dimension is not upper semicontinuous. We exhibit a class of examples of self-similar sets of positive measure containing an open set. If C 1 and C 2 are two self-similar sets C 1 and C 2 such that the sum of their dimensions …

A Mathematical Model For Outgassing And Contamination, W. Fang, M. Shillor, E. Stahel, E. Epstein, C. Ly, J. Mcniel, Edward D. Zaron Jan 1991

A Mathematical Model For Outgassing And Contamination, W. Fang, M. Shillor, E. Stahel, E. Epstein, C. Ly, J. Mcniel, Edward D. Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A model for the mathematical description of the processes of outgassing and contamination in a vacuum system is proposed. The underlying assumptions are diffusion in the source, convection and diffusion in the cavity, mass transfer across the source-cavity interface, and a generalization of the Langmuir isotherm for the sorption kinetics on the target. Three approximations are considered where the asymptotic behavior of the model for large time is shown as well as the dependence and sensitivity of the model on some of the parameters. Some numerical examples of the full model are then presented together with a proof of the …

Entropy Measures In Input-Output Analysis, Martin Zwick, Abbas Heiat

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Applications of Shannon's entropy measure to the matrices of technical and interdependence coefficients, to the final demand vector, and to other aspects of input- output tables are proposed. These entropy measures serve as indices of different types of economic diversity. The relevance of such indices for economic planning and for analyses of economic structural complexity and development is discussed.
