Time-Frequency Analysis Of Terahertz Radar Signals For Rapit Heart And Breath Rate Detection, Melody L. Massar Jun 2008

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Terahertz Radar Signals For Rapit Heart And Breath Rate Detection, Melody L. Massar

Theses and Dissertations

We develop new time-frequency analytic techniques which facilitate the rapid detection of a person's heart and breath rates from the Doppler shift the movement of their body induces in a terahertz radar signal. In particular, the Doppler shift in the continuous radar return is proportional to the velocity of the person's body. Thus, a time-frequency analysis of the radar return will yield a velocity signal. This signal, in turn, may undergo a second time-frequency analysis to yield any periodic components of the velocity signal, which are often related to the heart and breath rates of the individual. One straightforward means …

Estimation Of The Number Of Microbial Species Comprising A Population, Melanie R. Slattery Mar 2008

Estimation Of The Number Of Microbial Species Comprising A Population, Melanie R. Slattery

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the appropriateness of using non-parametric estimators, specifically the Chao1, ACES, and Jackknife methods, for estimation of the number of unique species comprising a population. It goes on to develop a parametric method for the above stated problem. This research consisted of creating diverse populations, with known numbers of species, and applying the aforementioned non-parametric and parametric methods to samples drawn from the constructed populations. The parametric fitting of several different distributions to the sample data, including the lognormal, gamma, and Weibull was considered. Both types of methodologies were then applied to sample …

Hardware Algorithm Implementation For Mission Specific Processing, Jason W. Shirley Mar 2008

Hardware Algorithm Implementation For Mission Specific Processing, Jason W. Shirley

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need to expedite the process of designing military hardware to stay ahead of the adversary. The core of this project was to build reusable, synthesizeable libraries to make this a possibility. In order to build these libraries, Matlab® commands and functions, such as Conv2, Round, Floor, Pinv, etc., had to be converted into reusable VHDL modules. These modules make up reusable libraries for the Mission Specific Process (MSP) which will support AFRL/RY. The MSP allows the VLSI design process to be completed in a mere matter of days or months using an FPGA or ASIC design, as …

Street Gangs: A Modeling Approach To Evaluation "At Risk" Youth, Bernard Jacob Loeffelholz Mar 2008

Street Gangs: A Modeling Approach To Evaluation "At Risk" Youth, Bernard Jacob Loeffelholz

Theses and Dissertations

Street gangs have plagued the United States for decades. One focus of current gang prevention efforts strives to reduce the number of new recruits to local street gangs. This research proposes the uses of modeling and decision analysis to aid in identifying potentially “at risk” children likely to join a street gang in Montgomery County, Ohio. A stronger means of identification of “at risk” children can lead to a more efficient placement of resources to reduce the number of street gang recruits. The approach also aids in differentiating between neighborhoods to help focus efforts. Information obtained from value-focused thinking (VFT) …

Entire Blow-Up Solutions Of Semilinear Elliptic Equations And Systems, Jesse D. Peterson Mar 2008

Entire Blow-Up Solutions Of Semilinear Elliptic Equations And Systems, Jesse D. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

We examine two problems concerning semilinear elliptic equations. We consider single equations of the form Δu = p(x)uα + q(x)uβ for 0 <α ≤ β ≤1 and systems Δu = p(| x |) f (v), Δv = q(| x |)g(u) , both in Euclidean n -space, n ≥ 3 . These types of problems arise in steady state diffusion, the electric potential of some bodies, subsonic motion of gases, and control theory. For the single equation case, we present sufficient conditions on p and q to …

Risk-Based Comparison Of Classification Systems, Seth B. Wagenman Mar 2008

Risk-Based Comparison Of Classification Systems, Seth B. Wagenman

Theses and Dissertations

Performance measures for families of classification system families that rely upon the analysis of receiver operating characteristics (ROCs), such as area under the ROC curve (AUC), often fail to fully address the issue of risk, especially for classification systems involving more than two classes. For the general case, we denote matrices of class prevalences, costs, and class-conditional probabilities, and assume costs are subjectively fixed, acceptable estimates for expected values of class-conditional probabilities exist, and mutual independence between a variable in one such matrix and those of any other matrix. The ROC Risk Functional (RRF), valid for any finite number of …

Statistical Removal Of Shadow For Applications To Gait Recognition, Brian D. Hockersmith Mar 2008

Statistical Removal Of Shadow For Applications To Gait Recognition, Brian D. Hockersmith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to mathematically remove the shadow of an individual on video. The removal of the shadow will aid in the rendering of higher quality binary silhouettes than previously allowed. These silhouettes will allow researchers studying gait recognition to work with silhouettes unhindered by unrelated data. The thesis begins with the analysis of videos of solid colored backgrounds. A formulation of the effect of shadow on specified colors will aid in the derivation of a hypothesis test to remove an individual’s shadow. Video of an individual walking normally, perpendicular to the camera will be utilized to …

A Multivariate Magnitude Robust Control Chart For Mean Shift Detection And Change Point Estimation, Ryan M. Harrell Mar 2007

A Multivariate Magnitude Robust Control Chart For Mean Shift Detection And Change Point Estimation, Ryan M. Harrell

Theses and Dissertations

Statistical control charts are often used to detect a change in an otherwise stable process. This process may contain several variables affecting process stability. The goal of any control chart is to detect an out-of-control state quickly and provide insight on when the process actually changed. This reduces the off-line time the quality engineer spends assigning causality. In this research, a multivariate magnitude robust chart (MMRC) was developed using a change point model and a likelihood-ratio approach. Here the process is considered in-control until one or more normally distributed process variables permanently and suddenly shifts to out-of-control, stable value. Using …

Spacecraft Proximity Operations Used To Estimate The Dynamical & Physical Properties Of A Resident Space Object, Abraham F. Brunner Mar 2007

Spacecraft Proximity Operations Used To Estimate The Dynamical & Physical Properties Of A Resident Space Object, Abraham F. Brunner

Theses and Dissertations

When conducting a space proximity operation, developing high-fidelity estimates of the dynamical and physical properties of a Resident Space Object (RSO) based on post-rendezvous observational data acquired, is imperative for the understanding of the RSO itself and the operating environment. This research investigates the estimation of relative motion dynamics, rotational dynamics, and the feasibility of estimating the moments of inertia of a RSO. Using the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations, rigid-body dynamics, and estimation theory, a nonlinear least squares estimation algorithm is implemented in the processing of range data from tracked observation points on the RSO body. Through simulation, it was determined that …

Surrogate Strategies For Computationally Expensive Optimization Problems With Cpu-Time Correlated Functions, Raymond Magallanez Jr. Mar 2007

Surrogate Strategies For Computationally Expensive Optimization Problems With Cpu-Time Correlated Functions, Raymond Magallanez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on numerically solving a class of computationally expensive optimization problems that possesses a unique characteristic: as the optimal solution is approached, the computational time required to compute an objective function value decreases. This is motivated by an application in which each objective function evaluation requires both a numerical fluid dynamics simulation and an image registration and comparison process. The goal is to find the parameters of a predetermined image by comparing the flow dynamics from the numerical simulation and the predetermined image through the image comparison process. The generalized pattern search and mesh adaptive direct search methods …

Classifying Failing States, Nathan E. Nysether Mar 2007

Classifying Failing States, Nathan E. Nysether

Theses and Dissertations

The US is heavily involved in the first major war of the 21st Century -- The Global War on Terror (GWOT). As with any militant group, the foundation of the enemy's force is their people. There are two primary strategies for defeating the terrorists and achieving victory in the GWOT. First, we must root out terrorists where they live, train, plan, and recruit and attack them militarily. Second, we must suffocate them by cutting off the supply of new soldiers willing to choose aggression or even death over their current life. This thesis helps to achieve these objectives by applying …

Optimizing The Replication Of Multi-Quality Web Applications Using Aco And Wolf, Judson C. Dressler Sep 2006

Optimizing The Replication Of Multi-Quality Web Applications Using Aco And Wolf, Judson C. Dressler

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the adaptation of Ant Colony Optimization to a new NP-hard problem involving the replication of multi-quality database-driven web applications (DAs) by a large application service provider (ASP). The ASP must assign DA replicas to its network of heterogeneous servers so that user demand is satisfied and replica update loads are minimized. The algorithm proposed, AntDA, for solving this problem is novel in several respects: ants traverse a bipartite graph in both directions as they construct solutions, pheromone is used for traversing from one side of the bipartite graph to the other and back again, heuristic edge values …

A New Application Of The Channel Packet Method For Low Energy 1-D Elastic Scattering, Clint M. Zeringue Sep 2006

A New Application Of The Channel Packet Method For Low Energy 1-D Elastic Scattering, Clint M. Zeringue

Theses and Dissertations

An algorithm is presented which uses the channel packet method (CPM) to simulate low-energy, wave-packet propagation and compute S-matrix elements. A four-by-four matrix containing the momentum, expansion coefficients of the reactants and products is introduced to account for initial and final states having both positive and negative momentum. The approach does not consider scattering from one side or the other, rather it considers both incoming and outgoing wave packets from the left and right simultaneously. Therefore, during one simulation all four S-matrix elements, and elements, S+k,-K, S-k, +k, S+k, +k and S-k,-k are computed. …

Existence Of Large Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Multiple Terms, David N. Smith Sep 2006

Existence Of Large Solutions To Semilinear Elliptic Equations With Multiple Terms, David N. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

We consider the semilinear elliptic equation Δu = p(x)uα + q(x)uβ on a domain Ω ⊆ Rn, n ≥ 3, where p and q are nonnegative continuous functions with the property that each of their zeroes is contained in a bounded domain Ωp or Ωq, respectively in Ω such that p is positive on the boundary of Ωp and q is positive on the boundary of Ωq. For Ω bounded, we show that there exists a nonnegative solution u such that u(x) → ∞ as x → ∂Ω if …

Development And Validation Of Reentry Simulation Using Matlab, Robert E. Jameson Jr. Jun 2006

Development And Validation Of Reentry Simulation Using Matlab, Robert E. Jameson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort develops a program using MATLAB to solve the equations of motion for atmospheric reentry and analyzes the validity of the program for use as a tool to expeditiously predict reentry profiles. The reentry vehicle is modeled as a point mass with constant aerodynamic properties as defined by the user. The equations of motion for reentry are based on the two-body problem. The atmosphere is modeled as a single layer exponentially decreasing in density. The MATLAB program has the ability to derive the initial trajectory conditions from the position and velocity relative to the rotating surface of the …

An Interactive Relaxation Approach For Anomaly Detection And Preventive Measures In Computer Networks, Garrick A. Bell Apr 2006

An Interactive Relaxation Approach For Anomaly Detection And Preventive Measures In Computer Networks, Garrick A. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

It is proposed to develop a framework of detecting and analyzing small and widespread changes in specific dynamic characteristics of several nodes. The characteristics are locally measured at each node in a large network of computers and analyzed using a computational paradigm known as the Relaxation technique. The goal is to be able to detect the onset of a worm or virus as it originates, spreads-out, attacks and disables the entire network. Currently, selective disabling of one or more features across an entire subnet, e.g. firewalls, provides limited security and keeps us from designing high performance net-centric systems. The most …

Quantitative Object Reconstruction Using Abel Transform Tomography And Mixed Variable Optimization, Kevin R. O'Reilly Mar 2006

Quantitative Object Reconstruction Using Abel Transform Tomography And Mixed Variable Optimization, Kevin R. O'Reilly

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are interested in quantitatively reconstructing an object using Abel transform x-ray tomography. Specifically, they obtain a radiograph by x-raying an object and attempt to quantitatively determine the number and types of materials and the thicknesses of each material layer. Their current methodologies either fail to provide a quantitative description of the object or are generally too slow to be useful in practice. As an alternative, the problem is modeled here as a mixed variable programming (MVP) problem, in which some variables are nonnumeric and for which no derivative information is available. The …

Doppler Aliasing Reduction In Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Phase Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveforms, Andrew W. Hyatt Mar 2006

Doppler Aliasing Reduction In Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Phase Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveforms, Andrew W. Hyatt

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines the theory, application and results of side-looking airborne radar operation in hot clutter. Hot clutter is an electronic counter-measure used to degrade the performance of airborne radar. Hot clutter occurs by illuminating the ground with an airborne jammer at some velocity, azimuth, elevation, and range from the airborne radar. When the received RCS scattered hot clutter waveform is perfectly coherent with the radar waveform, the radar believes the returns created by the hot clutter jammer resulted from the transmitting radar. Hot clutter degrades radar performance at locations in azimuth and Doppler. The effect of hot clutter …

Doppler-Only Multistatic Radar, Dustin G. Mixon Mar 2006

Doppler-Only Multistatic Radar, Dustin G. Mixon

Theses and Dissertations

In order to estimate the position and velocity of a target, most multistatic radar systems require multiple independent target measurements, such as angle-of-arrival, time-of-arrival, and Doppler information. Though inexpensive and reliable, Doppler-only systems have not been widely implemented due to the inherent nonlinear problem of determining a target’s position and velocity from their measurements. We solve this problem. In particular, we first establish the lack of observability in the Doppler-only bistatic system, thereby demonstrating the need for multiple transmitters and/or receivers. Next, for a multistatic system with a sufficient number of transmitter-receiver pairs, we invoke classical optimization techniques, such as …

Existence Of Explosive Solutions To Non-Monotone Semilinear Elliptic Equations, Zachary H. Proano Mar 2006

Existence Of Explosive Solutions To Non-Monotone Semilinear Elliptic Equations, Zachary H. Proano

Theses and Dissertations

We consider the semilinear elliptic equation Δu = p(x)f(u) on a domain Ω ⊆ Rn, n ≥ 3, where f is a nonnegative function which vanishes at the origin and satisfies g1f g2 where g1; g2 are nonnegative, nondecreasing functions which also vanish at the origin, and p is a nonnegative continuous function with the property that any zero of p is contained in a bounded domain in such that p is positive on its boundary. For Ω bounded, we show that a nonnegative solution u satisfying u(x) …

A Sampling And Transformation Approach To Solving Random Differential Equations, Roger A. Erich Mar 2005

A Sampling And Transformation Approach To Solving Random Differential Equations, Roger A. Erich

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores an innovative sampling method used to conduct uncertainty analysis on a system with one random input. Given the distribution of the random input, X, we seek to find the distribution of the output random variable Y. When the functional form of the transformation Y=g(X) is not explicitly known, complicated procedures, such as stochastic projection or Monte Carlo simulation must be employed. The main focus of this research is determining the distribution of the random variable Y=g(X) where g(X) is the solution to an ordinary differential equation and X is a random parameter. Here, y=g(X) is approximated by …

Steady State Stress In A Coated Infinite Half-Space Subjected To A Moving Load, Jason M. Cruthirds Mar 2005

Steady State Stress In A Coated Infinite Half-Space Subjected To A Moving Load, Jason M. Cruthirds

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the use of coatings to mitigate the stress distribution into an infinite half-space. High energy impact phenomenon at velocities exceeding the speed of sound is an important area of interest to the Air Force Research Laboratory. Holloman Air Force Base's High Speed Test Track sustains significant damage due to this phenomenon. In this thesis, the track system and coating are modeled analytically with equations of motion in terms of linear displacements. Coating thickness and material properties of epoxy or polymer laminates are investigated to understand their affect of stress distribution in the rail. An analytic solution is …

Environmental Acoustic Transfer Functions And Filtering Acoustic Signals, Brandon P. Dias Mar 2005

Environmental Acoustic Transfer Functions And Filtering Acoustic Signals, Brandon P. Dias

Theses and Dissertations

Signal processing is the method of taking a given signal and extracting useful information, usually by a means of a transformation of some kind. Acoustic signals are functions of time in which the output is a pressure or a velocity potential response. An acoustic signal is affected by the environment in which it propagates, so one can attempt to remove the environmental effects to extract the useful information, in this case the original signal. This thesis will derive, in a mathematical framework, the process of filtering extraneous signals in a way that yields the original signal, and will then apply …

Noise Estimation In The Presence Of Bpsk Digital Burst Transmissions, Susan E. Bettison Mar 2005

Noise Estimation In The Presence Of Bpsk Digital Burst Transmissions, Susan E. Bettison

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores noise estimation techniques in an attempt to improve upon a previously developed digital burst transmission Binary Phase Shift Keyed (BPSK) demodulator. The demodulator success is dependent on the accuracy of the estimate of Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the unknown noise. Given a discrete time signal transformed into the frequency domain, the research seeks to determine if it is possible to effectively estimate the PSD of the unknown noise. The demodulator was developed using a new signal model for digital burst transmissions based on linear spectral subspace theory. Using this model and the redundancy properties of BPSK …

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas Dec 2004

Consistency Results For The Roc Curves Of Fused Classifiers, Kristopher S. Bjerkaas

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Air Force is researching the fusion of multiple classifiers. Given a finite collection of classifiers to be fused, one seeks a new classifier with improved performance. An established performance quantifier is the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, which allows one to view the probability of detection versus the probability of false alarm in one graph. Previous research shows that one does not have to perform tests to determine the ROC curve of this new fused classifier. If the ROC curve for each individual classifier has been determined, then formulas for the ROC curve of the fused classifier exist …

An Analysis Of Coast Guard Hh-65 Engine Reliability: A Comparison Of Malfunctions To Component Removals, Donna L. Cottrell

Theses and Dissertations

The Coast Guard HH-65 helicopter experienced 31 in-flight loss of power incidents during FY 2003 and 21 during the first two months of FY 2003. Concurrent with this apparent decrease in reliability, the Coast Guard seeks ways to expand the HH- 65’s Airborne Use of Force capabilities as a result of the September 11th, 2001 terrorists’ attacks. This study is an exploratory, empirical analysis of engine and airframe component replacements as related to engine mishaps and reliability in the HH-65. We use contingency table analysis, ordinary least squares regression, and logistic regression to examine the mishap history and component replacement …

Redundant Discrete Wavelet Transform Based Super-Resolution Using Sub-Pixel Image Registration, Daniel L. Ward Mar 2003

Redundant Discrete Wavelet Transform Based Super-Resolution Using Sub-Pixel Image Registration, Daniel L. Ward

Theses and Dissertations

The limited resolution of video imagery taken by aircraft, over geographical areas of interest, hinders the accurate extraction of useful information. The frame resolution of the video is determined by the camera that created it. Information exists about the camera which can be used to increase frame resolution beyond the resolution capability of the camera. This is achieved by a process called super-resolution, which uses multiple low-resolution video frames to create one high-resolution image.

Stochastic Intra-Cellular Modeling, Thomas E. Hopkins Mar 2003

Stochastic Intra-Cellular Modeling, Thomas E. Hopkins

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force personnel may sometimes come into contact with potentially harmful chemicals while performing their duties. Of course the Air Force desires to keep any potential health risks to its members to a minimum. To this end the Air Force would like to identify which chemicals are toxic, their level of toxicity, and the processes by which these chemicals disrupt normal biological activities at the cellular level. The development of mathematical models can be of great benefit to toxicity studies. Because real world systems involve randomness, that is noise, and the desire is to create mathematical models to represent those …
