Maximal Sensitive Dependence And The Optimal Path To Epidemic Extinction, Eric Forgoston, Simone Bianco, Leah B. Shaw, Ira B. Schwartz Mar 2011

Maximal Sensitive Dependence And The Optimal Path To Epidemic Extinction, Eric Forgoston, Simone Bianco, Leah B. Shaw, Ira B. Schwartz

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Extinction of an epidemic or a species is a rare event that occurs due to a large, rare stochastic fluctuation. Although the extinction process is dynamically unstable, it follows an optimal path that maximizes the probability of extinction. We show that the optimal path is also directly related to the finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the underlying dynamical system in that the optimal path displays maximum sensitivity to initial conditions. We consider several stochastic epidemic models, and examine the extinction process in a dynamical systems framework. Using the dynamics of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents as a constructive tool, we demonstrate that …

Global Well-Posedness And Asymptotic Behavior Of A Class Of Initial-Boundary-Value Problems Of The Kdv Equation On A Finite Domain, Ivonne Rivas, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang Mar 2011

Global Well-Posedness And Asymptotic Behavior Of A Class Of Initial-Boundary-Value Problems Of The Kdv Equation On A Finite Domain, Ivonne Rivas, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study a class of initial boundary value problem (IBVP) of the Korteweg- de Vries equation posed on a ?nite interval with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The IBVP is known to be locally well-posed, but its global L2 a priori estimate is not available and therefore it is not clear whether its solutions exist globally or blow up in finite time. It is shown in this paper that the solutions exist globally as long as their initial value and the associated boundary data are small, and moreover, those solutions decay exponentially if their boundary data decay exponentially.

Research In Mathematics Educational Technology: Current Trends And Future Demands, Shannon O. Driskell, Robert N. Ronau, Christopher R. Rakes, Sarah B. Bush, Margaret L. Niess, David K. Pugalee

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This systematic review of mathematics educational technology literature identified 1356 manuscripts addressing the integration of educational technology into mathematics instruction. The manuscripts were analyzed using three frameworks (Research Design, Teacher Knowledge, and TPACK) and three supplementary lenses (Data Sources, Outcomes, and NCTM Principles) to produce a database to support future research syntheses and meta-analyses. Preliminary analyses of student and teacher outcomes (e.g., knowledge, cognition, affect, and performance) suggest that the effects of incorporating graphing calculator and dynamic geometry technologies have been abundantly studied; however, the usefulness of the results was often limited by missing information regarding measures of validity, reliability, …

Epidemic Spread Of Influenza Viruses: The Impact Of Transient Populations On Disease Dynamics, Karen R. Ríos-Soto, Baojun Song, Carlos Castillo-Chavez

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The recent H1N1 ("swine u") pandemic and recent H5N1 ("avian u") outbreaks have brought increased attention to the study of the role of animal populations as reservoirs for pathogens that could invade human populations. It is believed that pigs acquired u strains from birds and humans, acting as a mixing vessel in generating new influenza viruses. Assessing the role of animal reservoirs, particularly reservoirs involving highly mobile populations (like migratory birds), on disease dispersal and persistence is of interests to a wide range of researchers including public health experts and evolutionary biologists. This paper studies the interactions between transient and …

Essays On Hedge Fund Replication: Methodological Assessment And Development Of The Factor Approach, Nonlinear Modeling And Policy Perspectives, Guillaume Weisang

2011

This dissertation is concerned with hedge fund replication, a subject of a practical and theoretical importance, both from an investment and a risk management point of view. One of our goals is to extend known methodologies in order to enhance our understanding of an industry that is known for its secrecy and its lack of transparency. A second goal is to contribute to the quantitative finance literature with improved techniques for hedge fund replication. Hedge fund replication (HFR) is approached from the methodological as well as from practical and regulatory perspectives. The first two chapters provide the motivation and the …

Fully Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems With Impulse, Paul Eloe, Muhammad Usman Jan 2011

Fully Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems With Impulse, Paul Eloe, Muhammad Usman

Mathematics Faculty Publications

An impulsive boundary value problem with nonlinear boundary conditions for a second order ordinary differential equation is studied. In particular, sufficient conditions are provided so that a compression- expansion cone theoretic fixed point theorem can be applied to imply the existence of positive solutions. The nonlinear forcing term is assumed to satisfy usual sublinear or superlinear growth as t → ∞ or t → 0 +. The nonlinear impulse terms and the nonlinear boundary terms are assumed to satisfy the analogous asymptotic behavior.

Prospective Teachers' Use Of Representations In Solving Statistical Tasks With Dynamic Statistical Software, Hollylynne Lee, Shannon O. Driskell, Suzanne R. Harper, Keith R. Leatham, Gladis Kersaint, Robin L. Angotti

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This study examined a random stratified sample (n=62) of prospective teachers' work across eight institutions on three tasks that utilized dynamic statistical software. Our work was guided by considering how teachers may utilize their statistical knowledge and technological statistical knowledge to engage in cycles of investigation. Although teachers did not tend to take full advantage of dynamic linking capabilities, they utilized a large variety of graphical representations and often added statistical measures or other augmentations to graphs as part of their analysis.

Algorithms For Area Preserving Flows, Catherine Kublik, Selim Esedoglu, Jeffrey A. Fessler Jan 2011

Algorithms For Area Preserving Flows, Catherine Kublik, Selim Esedoglu, Jeffrey A. Fessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We propose efficient and accurate algorithms for computing certain area preserving geometric motions of curves in the plane, such as area preserving motion by curvature. These schemes are based on a new class of diffusion generated motion algorithms using signed distance functions. In particular, they alternate two very simple and fast operations, namely convolution with the Gaussian kernel and construction of the distance function, to generate the desired geometric flow in an unconditionally stable manner. We present applications of these area preserving flows to large scale simulations of coarsening.

Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram Dec 2010

Reliability Measures Of A Three-State Complex System: A Copula Approach, Mangey Ram

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Improvement in reliability and production play a very important role in system design. The two key factors, considered in predicting system reliability, are failure distribution of the component and system configuration. This research discusses the mathematical modeling of a highly reliable complex system, which is in three states i.e. normal, partial failed (degraded state) and complete failed state. The system, partial failed is due to the partial failure of internal components or redundancies and completely failed is due to catastrophic failure of the system. Repair rates are general functions of the time spent. All the transition rates are constant except …

Approximate Approach To The Das Model Of Fractional Logistic Population Growth, S. Das, P. K. Gupta, K. Vishal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, the analytical method, Homotopy perturbation method (HPM) has been successfully implemented for solving nonlinear logistic model of fractional order. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. Using initial value, the explicit solutions of population size for different particular cases have been derived. Numerical results show that the method is extremely efficient to solve this complicated biological model.

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li Nov 2010

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This work is an extensive study of the 3 different types of positive solutions of the Matukuma equation 1r2(r2ϕ′)′=−rλ−2(1+r2)λ/2ϕp,p>1,λ>0 : the E-solutions (regular at r = 0), the M-solutions (singular at r = 0) and the F-solutions (whose existence begins away from r = 0). An essential tool is a transformation of the equation into a 2-dimensional asymptotically autonomous system, whose limit sets (by a theorem of H. R. Thieme) are the limit sets of Emden–Fowler systems, and serve as a characterization of the different solutions. The emphasis lies on the study of the M …

An Approximate Analytical Solution Of The Fractional Diffusion Equation With External Force And Different Type Of Absorbent Term - Revisited, S. Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) is applied to obtain an approximate analytical solution of a fractional diffusion equation with an external force and a reaction term different from the reaction term used by Das and Gupta (2010). The anomalous behavior of diffusivity in presence or absence of linear external force due to the presence of this force of reaction term are obtained and presented graphically.

The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon Jul 2010

The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon

Conference Papers

Micro-generation technologies such as photovoltaics and micro-wind power are becoming increasing popular among homeowners, mainly a result of policy support mechanisms helping to improve cost competiveness as compared to traditional fossil fuel generation. National government strategies to reduce electricity demand generated from fossil fuels and to meet European Union 20/20 targets is driving this change. However, the real performance of these technologies in a domestic setting is not often known as high time resolution models for domestic electricity load profiles are not readily available. As a result, projections in terms of reducing electricity demand and financial paybacks for these micro-generation …

On Construction Of The Smallest One-Sided Confidence Interval For The Difference Of Two Proportions, Weizhen Wang Apr 2010

On Construction Of The Smallest One-Sided Confidence Interval For The Difference Of Two Proportions, Weizhen Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

For my class of one-sided 1 - α confidence intervals with a certain monotonicity ordering on the random confidence limit, the smallest interval, in the sense of the set inclusion for the difference of two proportions of two independent binomial random variables, is constructed based on a direct analysis of coverage probability function. A special ordering on the confidence limit is developed and the corresponding smallest confidence interval is derived. This interval is then applied to identify the minimum effective dose (MED) for binary data in dose-response studies, and a multiple test procedure that controls the familywise error rate at …

Software Internationalization: A Framework Validated Against Industry Requirements For Computer Science And Software Engineering Programs, John Huân Vũ Mar 2010

Software Internationalization: A Framework Validated Against Industry Requirements For Computer Science And Software Engineering Programs, John Huân Vũ

Master's Theses

View John Huân Vũ's thesis presentation at http://youtu.be/y3bzNmkTr-c.

In 2001, the ACM and IEEE Computing Curriculum stated that it was necessary to address "the need to develop implementation models that are international in scope and could be practiced in universities around the world." With increasing connectivity through the internet, the move towards a global economy and growing use of technology places software internationalization as a more important concern for developers. However, there has been a "clear shortage in terms of numbers of trained persons applying for entry-level positions" in this area. Eric Brechner, Director of Microsoft Development Training, suggested …

Integer Functions On The Cycle Space And Edges Of A Graph, Dan Slilaty Feb 2010

Integer Functions On The Cycle Space And Edges Of A Graph, Dan Slilaty

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A directed graph has a natural Z-module homomorphism from the underlying graph’s cycle space to Z where the image of an oriented cycle is the number of forward edges minus the number of backward edges. Such a homomorphism preserves the parity of the length of a cycle and the image of a cycle is bounded by the length of that cycle. Pretzel and Youngs (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 3(4):544–553, 1990) showed that any Z-module homomorphism of a graph’s cycle space to Z that satisfies these two properties for all cycles must be such a map induced from an edge direction …

Periodic Solutions Of Neutral Delay Integral Equations Of Advanced Type, Muhammad Islam, Nasrin Sultana, James Booth Jan 2010

Periodic Solutions Of Neutral Delay Integral Equations Of Advanced Type, Muhammad Islam, Nasrin Sultana, James Booth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study the existence of continuous periodic solutions of a neutral delay integral equation of advanced type. In the analysis we employ three fixed point theorems: Banach, Krasnosel'skii, and Krasnosel'skii-Schaefer. Krasnosel'skii-Schaefer fixed point theorem requires an a priori bound on all solutions. We employ a Liapunov type method to obtain such bound.

Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li Jan 2010

Traveling Wave Solutions For A Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Influenza A Drift, Joaquin Riviera, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we discuss the existence of traveling wave solutions for a nonlocal reaction-diffusion model of Influenza A proposed in Lin et. al. (2003). The proof for the existence of the traveling wave takes advantage of the different time scales between the evolution of the disease and the progress of the disease in the population. Under this framework we are able to use the techniques from geometric singular perturbation theory to prove the existence of the traveling wave.

Statistical Analysis Of Wastewater Remediation And Bio-Fuels Production Of Algae, Jay D. Jones Jan 2010

Statistical Analysis Of Wastewater Remediation And Bio-Fuels Production Of Algae, Jay D. Jones

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Logan city wastewater treatment system consists of a series of seven large aerated ponds (460 acres) that biologically treats 15 million gallons per day of wastewater from Logan city and six other communities. Tighter regulations of allowed phosphorus levels in the effluent have recently been implemented due to environmental concerns of a downstream reservoir. The Biological Engineering program at Utah State University, the Bio-fuels Center, the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) and the city of Logan are working together to remediate the wastewater treatment system using microalgae. Algal growth requires the uptake of phosphorus. Thus, phosphorus in the effluent …

Linearly Ordered Topological Spaces And Weak Domain Representability, Joe Mashburn Jan 2010

Linearly Ordered Topological Spaces And Weak Domain Representability, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

It is well known that domain representable spaces, that is topological spaces that are homeomorphic to the space of maximal elements of some domain, must be Baire. In this paper it is shown that every linearly ordered topological space (LOTS) is homeomorphic to an open dense subset of a weak domain representable space. This means that weak domain representable spaces need not be Baire.

Coarsening In High Order, Discrete, Ill-Posed Diffusion Equations, Catherine Kublik Jan 2010

Coarsening In High Order, Discrete, Ill-Posed Diffusion Equations, Catherine Kublik

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study the discrete version of a family of ill-posed, nonlinear diffusion equations of order 2n. The fourth order (n=2) version of these equations constitutes our main motivation, as it appears prominently in image processing and computer vision literature. It was proposed by You and Kaveh as a model for denoising images while maintaining sharp object boundaries (edges). The second order equation (n=1) corresponds to another famous model from image processing, namely Perona and Malik's anisotropic diffusion, and was studied in earlier papers. The equations studied in this paper are high order analogues of the Perona-Malik equation, and like the …

Probability Models For Blackjack Poker, Charlie H. Cooke Jan 2010

Probability Models For Blackjack Poker, Charlie H. Cooke

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

For simplicity in calculation, previous analyses of blackjack poker have employed models which employ sampling with replacement. in order to assess what degree of error this may induce, the purpose here is to calculate results for a typical hand where sampling without replacement is employed. It is seen that significant error can result when long runs are required to complete the hand. The hand examined is itself of particular interest, as regards both its outstanding expectations of high yield and certain implications for pair splitting of two nines against the dealer's seven. Theoretical and experimental methods are used in order …

Forced Oscillations Of The Korteweg-De Vries Equation On A Bounded Domain And Their Stability, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang Dec 2009

Forced Oscillations Of The Korteweg-De Vries Equation On A Bounded Domain And Their Stability, Muhammad Usman, Bingyu Zhang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

It has been observed in laboratory experiments that when nonlinear dispersive waves are forced periodically from one end of undisturbed stretch of the medium of propagation, the signal eventually becomes temporally periodic at each spatial point. The observation has been confirmed mathematically in the context of the damped Kortewg-de Vries (KdV) equation and the damped Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation. In this paper we intend to show the same results hold for the pure KdV equation (without the damping terms) posed on a bounded domain. Consideration is given to the initial-boundary-value problem

It is shown …

Optimal Filtering Of An Advertising Production System With Deteriorating Items, Lakhdar Aggoun, Ali Benmerzouga, Lotfi Tadj Dec 2009

Optimal Filtering Of An Advertising Production System With Deteriorating Items, Lakhdar Aggoun, Ali Benmerzouga, Lotfi Tadj

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider an integrated stochastic advertising-production system in the case of a duopoly. Two firms spend certain amounts to advertise some product. The expenses processes evolve according to the jumps of two homogeneous, finite-state Markov chains. We assume that the items in stock may be subject to deterioration and the deterioration parameter is assumed to be random.

The Regular Excluded Minors For Signed-Graphic Matroids, Hongxun Qin, Dan Slilaty, Xiangqian Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We show that the complete list of regular excluded minors for the class of signed-graphic matroids is M*(G1),...,M*(G29),R15,R16. Here G1,...,G29 are the vertically 2-connected excluded minors for the class of projective-planar graphs and R15 and R16 are two regular matroids that we will define in the article.

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation: A Gentle Introduction, Susan Gruber, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper provides a concise introduction to targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) of causal effect parameters. The interested analyst should gain sufficient understanding of TMLE from this introductory tutorial to be able to apply the method in practice. A program written in R is provided. This program implements a basic version of TMLE that can be used to estimate the effect of a binary point treatment on a continuous or binary outcome.

Shrinkage Estimation Of Expression Fold Change As An Alternative To Testing Hypotheses Of Equivalent Expression, Zahra Montazeri, Corey M. Yanofsky, David R. Bickel Aug 2009

Shrinkage Estimation Of Expression Fold Change As An Alternative To Testing Hypotheses Of Equivalent Expression, Zahra Montazeri, Corey M. Yanofsky, David R. Bickel

COBRA Preprint Series

Research on analyzing microarray data has focused on the problem of identifying differentially expressed genes to the neglect of the problem of how to integrate evidence that a gene is differentially expressed with information on the extent of its differential expression. Consequently, researchers currently prioritize genes for further study either on the basis of volcano plots or, more commonly, according to simple estimates of the fold change after filtering the genes with an arbitrary statistical significance threshold. While the subjective and informal nature of the former practice precludes quantification of its reliability, the latter practice is equivalent to using a …
