Positive Solutions For A Singular Fourth Order Nonlocal Boundary Value Problem, John M. Davis, Paul W. Eloe, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson
Positive Solutions For A Singular Fourth Order Nonlocal Boundary Value Problem, John M. Davis, Paul W. Eloe, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Positive solutions are obtained for the fourth order nonlocal boundary value problem, u(4)=f(x,u), 0 < x < 1, u(0) = u''(0) = u'(1) = u''(1) - u''(2/3)=0, where f(x,u) is singular at x = 0, x=1, y=0, and may be singular at y=∞. The solutions are shown to exist at fixed points for an operator that is decreasing with respect to a cone.
Almost Automorphic Solutions Of Delayed Neutral Dynamic Systems On Hybrid Domains, Murat Adıvar, Halis Can Koyuncuoğlu, Youssef Raffoul
Almost Automorphic Solutions Of Delayed Neutral Dynamic Systems On Hybrid Domains, Murat Adıvar, Halis Can Koyuncuoğlu, Youssef Raffoul
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study the existence of almost automorphic solutions of the delayed neutral dynamic system on hybrid domains that are additively periodic. We use exponential dichotomy and prove uniqueness of projector of exponential dichotomy to obtain some limit results leading to sufficient conditions for existence of almost automorphic solutions to neutral system. Unlike the existing literature we prove our existence results without assuming boundedness of the coefficient matrices in the system. Hence, we significantly improve the results in the existing literature. Finally, we also provide an existence result for an almost periodic solutions of the system.
Stochastic Models Of Evidence Accumulation In Changing Environments, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Zachary P. Kilpatrick, Krešimir Josić
Stochastic Models Of Evidence Accumulation In Changing Environments, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Zachary P. Kilpatrick, Krešimir Josić
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Organisms and ecological groups accumulate evidence to make decisions. Classic experiments and theoretical studies have explored this process when the correct choice is fixed during each trial. However, we live in a constantly changing world. What effect does such impermanence have on classical results about decision making? To address this question we use sequential analysis to derive a tractable model of evidence accumulation when the correct option changes in time. Our analysis shows that ideal observers discount prior evidence at a rate determined by the volatility of the environment, and the dynamics of evidence accumulation is governed by the information …

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For Stability Of Volterra Integro-Dynamic Equation Systems On Time Scales, Youssef Raffoul
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this research we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the zero solution of scalar Volterra integro-dynamic equation on general time scales. Our approach is based on the construction of suitable Lyapunov functionals. We will compare our findings with known results and provides application to quantum calculus.

Neutrosophic Overset, Neutrosophic Underset, And Neutrosophic Offset. Similarly For Neutrosophic Over-/Under-/Off- Logic, Probability, And Statistics, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Neutrosophic Over-/Under-/Off-Set and -Logic were defined for the first time by Smarandache in 1995 and published in 2007. They are totally different from other sets/logics/probabilities.
He extended the neutrosophic set respectively to Neutrosophic Overset {when some neutrosophic component is > 1}, Neutrosophic Underset {when some neutrosophic component is < 0}, and to Neutrosophic Offset {when some neutrosophic components are off the interval [0, 1], i.e. some neutrosophic component > 1 and other neutrosophic component < 0}.
This is no surprise with respect to the classical fuzzy set/logic, intuitionistic fuzzy set/logic, or classical/imprecise probability, where the values are not allowed outside the interval [0, 1], since our real-world has …

Hemodynamic Analysis Of Fast And Slow Aneurysm Occlusions By Flow Diversion In Rabbits, Bong Jae Chung, Fernando Mut, Ramanathan Kadirvel, Ravi Lingineni, David F. Kallmes, Juan R. Cebral
Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose: To assess hemodynamic differences between aneurysms that occlude rapidly and those occluding in delayed fashion after flow diversion in rabbits. Methods: Thirty-six elastase-induced aneurysms in rabbits were treated with flow diverting devices. Aneurysm occlusion was assessed angiographically immediately before they were sacrificed at 1 (n=6), 2 (n=4), 4 (n=8) or 8 weeks (n=18) after treatment. The aneurysms were classified into a fast occlusion group if they were completely or near completely occluded at 4 weeks or earlier and a slow occlusion group if they remained incompletely occluded at 8 weeks. The immediate post-treatment flow conditions in aneurysms of each …

Stability Condition Of A Retrial Queueing System With Abandoned And Feedback Customers, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Abbes Rabhi, Lahcene Yahiaoui
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper deals with the stability of a retrial queueing system with two orbits, abandoned and feedback customers. Two independent Poisson streams of customers arrive to the system, and flow into a single-server service system. An arriving one of type i; i = 1; 2, is handled by the server if it is free; otherwise, it is blocked and routed to a separate type-i retrial (orbit) queue that attempts to re-dispatch its jobs at its specific Poisson rate. The customer in the orbit either attempts service again after a random time or gives up receiving service and leaves the system …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we discuss the steady state analysis of a batch arrival feedback retrial queue with two types of service and negative customers. Any arriving batch of positive customers finds the server is free, one of the customers from the batch enters into the service area and the rest of them join into the orbit. The negative customer, arriving during the service time of a positive customer, will remove the positive customer in-service and the interrupted positive customer either enters into the orbit or leaves the system. If the orbit is empty at the service completion of each type …

A Nonlinear Filter For Markov Chains And Its Effect On Diffusion Maps, Stefan Steinerberger
A Nonlinear Filter For Markov Chains And Its Effect On Diffusion Maps, Stefan Steinerberger
Yale Day of Data
Diffusion maps are a modern mathematical tool that helps to find structure in large data sets - we present a new filtering technique that is based on the assumption that errors in the data are intrinsically random to isolate and filter errors and thus boost the efficiency of diffusion maps. Applications include data sets from medicine (the Cleveland Heart Disease Data set and the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Data set) and engineering (the Ionosphere data set).
A Machine Learning Approach To Post-Market Surveillance Of Medical Devices, Jonathan Bates, Shu-Xia Li, Craig Parzynski, Ronald Coifman, Harlan Krumholz, Joseph Ross
A Machine Learning Approach To Post-Market Surveillance Of Medical Devices, Jonathan Bates, Shu-Xia Li, Craig Parzynski, Ronald Coifman, Harlan Krumholz, Joseph Ross
Yale Day of Data
Post-market surveillance is a collection of processes and activities used by product manufacturers and regulators, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to monitor the safety and effectiveness of medical devices once they are available for use “on the market”. These activities are designed to generate information to identify poorly performing devices and other safety problems, accurately characterize real-world device performance and clinical outcomes, and facilitate the development of new devices, or new uses for existing devices. Typically, a device is monitored by comparing adverse events in the exposed population to a matched unexposed population. This research considers …
Factors Affecting Dimensional Precision Of Consumer 3d Printing, David D. Hernandez
Factors Affecting Dimensional Precision Of Consumer 3d Printing, David D. Hernandez
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This paper investigates the factors affecting dimensional precision of consumer-grade 3D printing, attempting to isolate and mitigate sources of error. The focus is on creating engineering prototypes of, tooling for, or finalized instances of mechanical devices. A specific fused deposition modeling printer – the Ultimaker 2 – is analyzed in terms of meeting precise physical dimensions, consistent shapes, and predictable surface finish. Extensive trial and error resulted in removal of several sources of bias, with square test articles exhibiting a lower-than-anticipated mean percentage error of -0.387% (SD = 0.559), a value comparable to other modern manufacturing techniques. A full …

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aneurysm progression and rupture is thought to be governed by progressive degradation and weakening of the wall in response to abnormal hemodynamics. Our goal was to investigate the relationship between the intra-aneurysmal hemodynamic conditions and wall mechanical properties in human aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 8 unruptured aneurysms were analyzed. Computational fluid dynamics models were constructed from preoperative 3D rotational angiography images. The aneurysms were clipped, and the domes were resected and mechanically tested to failure with a uniaxial testing system under multiphoton microscopy. Linear regression analysis was performed to explore possible correlations between hemodynamic …
Per-Contact Infectivity Of Hcv Associated With Injection Exposures In A Prospective Cohort Of Young Injection Drug Users In San Francisco, Ca (Ufo Study), Yuridia Leyva
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Sharing needles and ancillary injection drug equipment places injection drug users (IDU) at risk for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), a highly infectious blood-borne virus. A limited number of studies have analyzed the per-contact infectivity of HCV associated with the use of previously-used needles, but per-contact infectivity of ancillary injecting equipment has not been previously investigated. Our goal is to estimate the per-contact infectivity of HCV associated with (1) injecting with another person's previously-used needle, classified as receptive needle sharing (RNS), and (2) using another person's previously-used ancillary injecting equipment, such as cookers to melt drugs and cottons to strain impurities …

A Framework For Inferring Unobserved Multistrain Epidemic Subpopulations Using Synchronization Dynamics, Eric Forgoston, Leah B. Shaw, Ira B. Schwartz
Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A new method is proposed to infer unobserved epidemic subpopulations by exploiting the synchronization properties of multistrain epidemic models. A model for dengue fever is driven by simulated data from secondary infective populations. Primary infective populations in the driven system synchronize to the correct values from the driver system. Most hospital cases of dengue are secondary infections, so this method provides a way to deduce unobserved primary infection levels. We derive center manifold equations that relate the driven system to the driver system and thus motivate the use of synchronization to predict unobserved primary infectives. Synchronization stability between primary and …
Comparison Of Two Parameter Estimation Techniques For Stochastic Models, Thomas C. Robacker
Comparison Of Two Parameter Estimation Techniques For Stochastic Models, Thomas C. Robacker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parameter estimation techniques have been successfully and extensively applied to deterministic models based on ordinary differential equations but are in early development for stochastic models. In this thesis, we first investigate using parameter estimation techniques for a deterministic model to approximate parameters in a corresponding stochastic model. The basis behind this approach lies in the Kurtz limit theorem which implies that for large populations, the realizations of the stochastic model converge to the deterministic model. We show for two example models that this approach often fails to estimate parameters well when the population size is small. We then develop a …
Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues Graduate Course, Laurel Saito, Alexander Fernald, Timothy Link
Interdisciplinary Modeling For Water-Related Issues Graduate Course, Laurel Saito, Alexander Fernald, Timothy Link
All ECSTATIC Materials
The science and management of aquatic ecosystems is inherently interdisciplinary, with issues associated with hydrology, atmospheric science, water quality, geochemistry, sociology, economics, environmental science, and ecology. Addressing water resources issues in any one discipline invariably involves effects that concern other disciplines, and attempts to address one issue often have consequences that exacerbate existing issues or concerns, or create new ones (Jørgensen et al. 1992; Lackey et al. 1975; Straskraba 1994) due to the strongly interactive nature of key processes (Christensen et al. 1996). Thus, research and management of aquatic ecosystems must be interdisciplinary to be most effective, but such truly …

Penalized Function-On-Function Regression, Andrada Ivanescu, Ana Maria Staicu, Fabian Scheipl, Sonja Greven
Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
A general framework for smooth regression of a functional response on one or multiple functional predictors is proposed. Using the mixed model representation of penalized regression expands the scope of function-on-function regression to many realistic scenarios. In particular, the approach can accommodate a densely or sparsely sampled functional response as well as multiple functional predictors that are observed on the same or different domains than the functional response, on a dense or sparse grid, and with or without noise. It also allows for seamless integration of continuous or categorical covariates and provides approximate confidence intervals as a by-product of the …
Mathematical Models Of Games Of Chance: Epistemological Taxonomy And Potential In Problem-Gambling Research, Catalin Barboianu
Mathematical Models Of Games Of Chance: Epistemological Taxonomy And Potential In Problem-Gambling Research, Catalin Barboianu
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Games of chance are developed in their physical consumer-ready form on the basis of mathematical models, which stand as the premises of their existence and represent their physical processes. There is a prevalence of statistical and probabilistic models in the interest of all parties involved in the study of gambling – researchers, game producers and operators, and players – while functional models are of interest more to math-inclined players than problem-gambling researchers. In this paper I present a structural analysis of the knowledge attached to mathematical models of games of chance and the act of mathematical modeling, arguing that such …
Generating Random Vectors Using Transformation With Multiple Roots And Its Applications, Qidi Peng, Henry Schellhorn, Lu Zhu
Generating Random Vectors Using Transformation With Multiple Roots And Its Applications, Qidi Peng, Henry Schellhorn, Lu Zhu
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
An approach is proposed to generate random vectors using transformation with multiple roots. This approach generalizes the one-dimensional inverse transformation with multiple roots method to higher dimensions, i.e., to random vectors with or without densities. In this approach, multiple roots of the transformation and probabilities of selecting each of the roots are derived. The strategies for constructing such a transformation are discussed and several examples are presented to motivate this simulation approach.

A Note On An M/M/S Queueing System With Two Reconnect And Two Redial Orbits, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Hanane Sakhi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A queueing system with two reconnect orbits, two redial (retrial) orbits, s servers and two independent Poisson streams of customers is considered. An arriving customer of type i, i = 1, 2 is handled by an available server, if there is any; otherwise, he waits in an infinite buffer queue. A waiting customer of type i who did not get connected to a server will lose his patience and abandon after an exponentially distributed amount of time, the abandoned one may leave the system (lost customer) or move into one of the redial orbits, from which he makes a new …

Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright
Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis provides a study of various boundary problems for one and two dimensional random walks. We first consider a one-dimensional random walk that starts at integer-valued height k > 0, with a lower boundary being the x-axis, and on each step moving downward with probability q being greater than or equal to the probability of going upward p. We derive the variance and the standard deviation of the number of steps T needed for the height to reach 0 from k, by first deriving the moment generating function of T. We then study two types of two-dimensional random walks with …

Given a graph G equipped with faithful and fixed-point-free Γ-action (Γ a finite group) we define an orbit minor H of G to be a minor of G for which the deletion and contraction sets are closed under the Γ-action. The orbit minor H inherits a Γ-symmetry from G, and when the contraction set is acyclic the action inherited by H remains faithful and fixed-point free. When G embeds in the sphere and the Γ-action on G extends to a Γ-action on the entire sphere, we say that G is Γ-spherical. In this paper we determine for every odd value …

Modeling Traffic At An Intersection, Kaleigh L. Mulkey, Saniita K. Fasenntao
Symposium of Student Scholars
The main purpose of this project is to build a mathematical model for traffic at a busy intersection. We use elements of Queueing Theory to build our model: the vehicles driving into the intersection are the “arrival process” and the stop light in the intersection is the “server.”
We collected traffic data on the number of vehicles arriving to the intersection, the duration of green and red lights, and the number of vehicles going through the intersection during a green light. We built a SAS macro code to simulate traffic based on parameters derived from the data.
In our program …
Bootstrapping Vs. Asymptotic Theory In Property And Casualty Loss Reserving, Andrew J. Difronzo Jr.
Bootstrapping Vs. Asymptotic Theory In Property And Casualty Loss Reserving, Andrew J. Difronzo Jr.
Honors Projects in Mathematics
One of the key functions of a property and casualty (P&C) insurance company is loss reserving, which calculates how much money the company should retain in order to pay out future claims. Most P&C insurance companies use non-stochastic (non-random) methods to estimate these future liabilities. However, future loss data can also be projected using generalized linear models (GLMs) and stochastic simulation. Two simulation methods that will be the focus of this project are: bootstrapping methodology, which resamples the original loss data (creating pseudo-data in the process) and fits the GLM parameters based on the new data to estimate the sampling …

Sensitivity Of Mixed Models To Computational Algorithms Of Time Series Data, Gunaime Nevine
Doctoral Dissertations
Statistical analysis is influenced by implementation of the algorithms used to execute the computations associated with various statistical techniques. Over many years; very important criteria for model comparison has been studied and examined, and two algorithms on a single dataset have been performed numerous times. The goal of this research is not comparing two or more models on one dataset, but comparing models with numerical algorithms that have been used to solve them on the same dataset.
In this research, different models have been broadly applied in modeling and their contrasting which are affected by the numerical algorithms in different …

Relationship Between High School Math Course Selection And Retention Rates At Otterbein University, Lauren A. Fisher
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Binary logistic regression was used to study the relationship between high school math course selection and retention rates at Otterbein University. Graduation rates from postsecondary institutions are low in the United States and, more specifically, at Otterbein. This study is important in helping to determine what can raise retention rates, and ultimately, graduation rates. It directs focus toward high school math course selection and what should be changed before entering a post-secondary institution. Otterbein will have a better idea of what type of students to recruit and which students may be good candidates with some extra help. Recruiting is expensive, …
