Developing A Miniature Smart Boat For Marine Research, Michael Isaac Eirinberg
Developing A Miniature Smart Boat For Marine Research, Michael Isaac Eirinberg
Computer Engineering
This project examines the development of a smart boat which could serve as a possible marine research apparatus. The smart boat consists of a miniature vessel containing a low-cost microcontroller to live stream a camera feed, GPS telemetry, and compass data through its own WiFi access point. The smart boat also has the potential for autonomous navigation. My project captivated the interest of several members of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo’s (Cal Poly SLO) Marine Science Department faculty, who proposed a variety of fascinating and valuable smart boat applications.

Using Differential Equations To Model A Cockatoo On A Spinning Wheel As Part Of The Scudem V Modeling Challenge, Miles Pophal, Chenming Zhen, Henry Bae
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
For the SCUDEM V 2020 virtual challenge, we received an outstanding distinction for modeling a bird perched on a bicycle wheel utilizing the appropriate physical equations of rotational motion. Our model includes both theoretical calculations and numerical results from applying the Heaviside function for the swing motion of the bird. We provide a discussion on: our model and its numerical results, the overall limitations and future work of the model we constructed, and the experience we had participating in SCUDEM V 2020.
Numerical Methods For Optimal Transport And Optimal Information Transport On The Sphere, Axel G. R. Turnquist
Numerical Methods For Optimal Transport And Optimal Information Transport On The Sphere, Axel G. R. Turnquist
Dissertations
The primary contribution of this dissertation is in developing and analyzing efficient, provably convergent numerical schemes for solving fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation arising from Optimal Transport on the sphere, and then applying and adapting the methods to two specific engineering applications: the reflector antenna problem and the moving mesh methods problem. For these types of nonlinear partial differential equations, many numerical studies have been done in recent years, the vast majority in subsets of Euclidean space. In this dissertation, the first major goal is to develop convergent schemes for the sphere. However, another goal of this dissertation is …
Periodic Fast Multipole Method, Ruqi Pei
Periodic Fast Multipole Method, Ruqi Pei
Dissertations
Applications in electrostatics, magnetostatics, fluid mechanics, and elasticity often involve sources contained in a unit cell C, centered at the origin, on which periodic boundary condition are imposed. The free-space Green’s functions for many classical partial differential equations (PDE), such as the modified Helmholtz equation, are well-known. Among the existing schemes for imposing the periodicity, three common approaches are: direct discretization of the governing PDE including boundary conditions to yield a large sparse linear system of equations, spectral methods which solve the governing PDE using Fourier analysis, and the method of images based on tiling the plane with copies of …
Type I Error Rate Controlling Procedures For Multiple Hypotheses Testing, Beibei Li
Type I Error Rate Controlling Procedures For Multiple Hypotheses Testing, Beibei Li
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses several different but related topics arising in the field of multiple testing, including weighted procedures and graphical approaches for controlling the familywise error rate (FWER), and stepwise procedures with control of the false discovery rate (FDR) for discrete data. It consists of three major parts.
The first part investigates weighted procedures for controlling the FWER. In many statistical applications, hypotheses may be differentially weighted according to their different importance. Many weighted multiple testing procedures (wMTPs) have been developed for controlling the FWER. Among these procedures, two weighted Holm procedures are commonly used in practice: one is based …
Statistical Characteristics Of High-Frequency Gravity Waves Observed By An Airglow Imager At Andes Lidar Observatory, Alan Z. Liu, Bing Cao
Statistical Characteristics Of High-Frequency Gravity Waves Observed By An Airglow Imager At Andes Lidar Observatory, Alan Z. Liu, Bing Cao
Publications
The long-term statistical characteristics of high-frequency quasi-monochromatic gravity waves are presented using multi-year airglow images observed at Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO, 30.3° S, 70.7° W) in northern Chile. The distribution of primary gravity wave parameters including horizontal wavelength, vertical wavelength, intrinsic wave speed, and intrinsic wave period are obtained and are in the ranges of 20–30 km, 15–25 km, 50–100 m s−1, and 5–10 min, respectively. The duration of persistent gravity wave events captured by the imager approximately follows an exponential distribution with an average duration of 7–9 min. The waves tend to propagate against the local background winds and …
Implementation Of A Least Squares Method To A Navier-Stokes Solver, Jada P. Lytch, Taylor Boatwright, Ja'nya Breeden
Implementation Of A Least Squares Method To A Navier-Stokes Solver, Jada P. Lytch, Taylor Boatwright, Ja'nya Breeden
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Navier-Stokes equations are used to model fluid flow. Examples include fluid structure interactions in the heart, climate and weather modeling, and flow simulations in computer gaming and entertainment. The equations date back to the 1800s, but research and development of numerical approximation algorithms continues to be an active area. To numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations we implement a least squares finite element algorithm based on work by Roland Glowinski and colleagues. We use the deal.II academic library , the C++ language, and the Linux operating system to implement the solver. We investigate convergence rates and apply the least squares …
Nessie Notation: A New Tool In Sequential Substitution Systems And Graph Theory For Summarizing Concatenations, Colton Davis
Nessie Notation: A New Tool In Sequential Substitution Systems And Graph Theory For Summarizing Concatenations, Colton Davis
Student Research
While doing research looking for ways to categorize causal networks generated by Sequential Substitution Systems, I created a new notation to compactly summarize concatenations of integers or strings of integers, including infinite sequences of these, in the same way that sums, products, and unions of sets can be summarized. Using my method, any sequence of integers or strings of integers with a closed-form iterative pattern can be compactly summarized in just one line of mathematical notation, including graphs generated by Sequential Substitution Systems, many Primitive Pythagorean Triplets, and various Lucas sequences including the Fibonacci sequence and the sequence of square …
Finite Dimensional Approximation And Pin(2)-Equivariant Property For Rarita-Schwinger-Seiberg-Witten Equations, Minh Lam Nguyen
Finite Dimensional Approximation And Pin(2)-Equivariant Property For Rarita-Schwinger-Seiberg-Witten Equations, Minh Lam Nguyen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Rarita-Schwinger operator Q was initially proposed in the 1941 paper by Rarita and Schwinger to study wave functions of particles of spin 3/2, and there is a vast amount of physics literature on its properties. Roughly speaking, 3/2−spinors are spinor-valued 1-forms that also happen to be in the kernel of the Clifford multiplication. Let X be a simply connected Riemannian spin 4−manifold. Associated to a fixed spin structure on X, we define a Seiberg-Witten-like system of non-linear PDEs using Q and the Hodge-Dirac operator d∗ + d+ after suitable gauge-fixing. The moduli space of solutions M contains (3/2-spinors, purely …
Vertical Take-Off And Landing Control Via Dual-Quaternions And Sliding Mode, Joshua Sonderegger
Vertical Take-Off And Landing Control Via Dual-Quaternions And Sliding Mode, Joshua Sonderegger
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The landing and reusability of space vehicles is one of the driving forces into renewed interest in space utilization. For missions to planetary surfaces, this soft landing has been most commonly accomplished with parachutes. However, in spite of their simplicity, they are susceptible to parachute drift. This parachute drift makes it very difficult to predict where the vehicle will land, especially in a dense and windy atmosphere such as Earth. Instead, recent focus has been put into developing a powered landing through gimbaled thrust. This gimbaled thrust output is dependent on robust path planning and controls algorithms. Being able to …

The idea of research is a representation of the nonlinear pseudo-random generators using state-space equations that is not based on the usual description as shift register synthesis but in terms of matrices. Different types of nonlinear pseudo-random generators with their algorithms have been applied in order to investigate the output pseudo-random sequences. Moreover, two examples are given for conciliated the results of this representation.
On The Coriolis Effect For Internal Ocean Waves, Rossen Ivanov
On The Coriolis Effect For Internal Ocean Waves, Rossen Ivanov
Conference papers
A derivation of the Ostrovsky equation for internal waves with methods of the Hamiltonian water wave dynamics is presented. The internal wave formed at a pycnocline or thermocline in the ocean is influenced by the Coriolis force of the Earth's rotation. The Ostrovsky equation arises in the long waves and small amplitude approximation and for certain geophysical scales of the physical variables.

Computational Framework Of Magnetized Mgo–Ni/Water-Based Stagnation Nanoflow Past An Elastic Stretching Surface: Application In Solar Energy Coatings, M, M. Bhatti, O. A. Bég, Sara Abdelsalam
Basic Science Engineering
In this article, motivated by novel nanofluid solar energy coating systems, a mathematical model of hybrid magnesium oxide (MgO) and nickel (Ni) nanofluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stagnation point flow impinging on a porous elastic stretching surface in a porous medium is developed. The hybrid nanofluid is electrically conducted, and a magnetic Reynolds number is sufficiently large enough to invoke an induced magnetic field. A Darcy model is adopted for the isotropic, homogenous porous medium. The boundary conditions account for the impacts of the velocity slip and thermal slip. Heat generation (source)/absorption (sink) and also viscous dissipation effects are included. The mathematical …

The Kepler Problem On Complex And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Michael R. Astwood
The Kepler Problem On Complex And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Michael R. Astwood
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The motion of objects in the sky has captured the attention of scientists and mathematicians since classical times. The problem of determining their motion has been dubbed the Kepler problem, and has since been generalized into an abstract problem of dynamical systems. In particular, the question of whether a classical system produces closed and bounded orbits is of importance even to modern mathematical physics, since these systems can often be analysed by hand. The aforementioned question was originally studied by Bertrand in the context of celestial mechanics, and is therefore referred to as the Bertrand problem. We investigate the qualitative …

Data-driven prediction of future faults is a major research area for many industrial applications. In this work, we present a new procedure of real-time fault prediction for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) using deep learning. CEBAF has been afflicted by frequent downtime caused by SRF cavity faults. We perform fault prediction using pre-fault RF signals from C100-type cryomodules. Using the pre-fault signal information, the new algorithm predicts the type of cavity fault before the actual onset. The early prediction may enable potential mitigation strategies to prevent the fault. In our work, we apply …
Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Model Checks For Two-Sample Location-Scale, Atefeh Javidialsaadi
Dissertations
Two-sample location-scale refers to a model that permits a pair of standardized random variables to have a common distribution. This means that if X1 and X2 are two random variables with means µ1 and µ2 and standard deviations ?1 and ?2, then (X1 - µ1)/?1 and (X2 - µ2)/?2 have some common unspecified standard or base distribution F0. Function-based hypothesis testing for these models refers to formal tests that would help determine whether or not two samples may have come from some location-scale …
Coherent Control Of Dispersive Waves, Jimmie Adriazola
Coherent Control Of Dispersive Waves, Jimmie Adriazola
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses some of the various issues which can arise when posing and solving optimization problems constrained by dispersive physics. Considered here are four technologically relevant experiments, each having their own unique challenges and physical settings including ultra-cold quantum fluids trapped by an external field, paraxial light propagation through a gradient index of refraction, light propagation in periodic photonic crystals, and surface gravity water waves over shallow and variable seabeds. In each of these settings, the physics can be modeled by dispersive wave equations, and the technological objective is to design the external trapping fields or propagation media such …

Computer Program Simulation Of A Quantum Turing Machine With Circuit Model, Shixin Wu
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
Molina and Watrous present a variation of the method to simulate a quantum Turing machine employed in Yao’s 1995 publication “Quantum Circuit Complexity”. We use a computer program to implement their method with linear algebra and an additional unitary operator defined to complete the details. Their method is verified to be correct on a quantum Turing machine.

(R1480) Heat Transfer In Peristaltic Motion Of Rabinowitsch Fluid In A Channel With Permeable Wall, Mahadev M. Channakote, Dilipkumar V. Kalse
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper is intended to investigate the effect of heat transfer on the peristaltic flow of Rabinowitsch fluid in a channel lined with a porous material. The Navier -Stokes equation governs the channel's flow, and Darcy's law describes the permeable boundary. The Rabinowitsch fluid model's governing equations are solved by utilizing approximations of the long-wavelength and small number of Reynolds. The expressions for axial velocity, temperature distribution, pressure gradient, friction force, stream function are obtained. The influence on velocity, pressure gradient, friction force, and temperature on pumping action of different physical parameters is explored via graphs.
Modeling Cherenkov Light Detection Timing For The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, Keilan Finn Ramirez
Modeling Cherenkov Light Detection Timing For The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, Keilan Finn Ramirez
Physics
The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is an array of four 12-meter telescopes which use the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique to conduct high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. VERITAS detects magnitude and location information associated with Cherenkov light, and uses this information to indirectly observe gamma-rays through a software reconstruction process. VERITAS also records timing information corresponding to Cherenkov light detection, and this additional information could theoretically be incorporated into the reconstruction process to improve the accuracy of gamma-ray observations. The first step to including timing information is to understand when Cherenkov light detection would be expected from a known …

Advances In Modeling Gas Adsorption In Porous Materials For The Characterization Applications, Max A. Maximov
Dissertations
The dissertation studies methods for mesoporous materials characterization using adsorption at various levels of scale and complexity. It starts with the topic introduction, necessary notations and definitions, recognized standards, and a literature review.
Synthesis of novel materials requires tailoring of the characterization methods and their thorough testing. The second chapter presents a nitrogen adsorption characterization study for silica colloidal crystals (synthetic opals). These materials have cage-like pores in the range of tens of nanometers. The adsorption model can be described within a macroscopic approach, based on the Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (DBdB) theory of capillary condensation. A kernel of theoretical isotherms is …
The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig
The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig
Theses and Dissertations
Exact Factorization is a framework for studying quantum many-body problems. This decomposes the wavefunctions of such systems into conditional and marginal components. We derive corresponding evolution equations for molecular systems whose conditional electronic subsystems are described by one or two Born-Oppenheimer levels and develop a program for their mathematical study.

High-Order Positivity-Preserving L2-Stable Spectral Collocation Schemes For The 3-D Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations, Johnathon Keith Upperman
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
High-order entropy stable schemes are a popular method used in simulations with the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The strength of these methods is that they formally satisfy a discrete entropy inequality which can be used to guarantee L2 stability of the numerical solution. However, a fundamental assumption that is explicitly or implicitly used in all entropy stability proofs available in the literature for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations is that the thermodynamic variables (e.g., density and temperature) are strictly positive in the entire space{time domain considered. Without this assumption, any entropy stability proof for a numerical scheme …
Electrohydrodynamic Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Scheme, Charles Leland Armstrong
Electrohydrodynamic Simulations Of Capsule Deformation Using A Dual Time-Stepping Lattice Boltzmann Scheme, Charles Leland Armstrong
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Capsules are fluid-filled, elastic membranes that serve as a useful model for synthetic and biological membranes. One prominent application of capsules is their use in modeling the response of red blood cells to external forces. These models can be used to study the cell’s material properties and can also assist in the development of diagnostic equipment. In this work we develop a three dimensional model for numerical simulations of red blood cells under the combined influence of hydrodynamic and electrical forces. The red blood cell is modeled as a biconcave-shaped capsule suspended in an ambient fluid domain. Cell deformation occurs …

Correlated Positron-Electron Orbital (Cpeo): A Novel Method That Models Positron-Electron Correlation In Virtual Ps At The Mean-Field Level, Kevin E. Blaine
Theses and Dissertations
The Correlated Positronic-Electronic Orbital (CPEO) method was developed and implemented to capture correlation effects at between the positron and electron in the modeling of systems that involve a bound positron. Methods that effectively model these systems require many hundred basis functions and use a mean field approach as the beginning step. CPEO builds an orbital for virtual Positronium (Ps) that contains a positron in a bound state along with an accompanying electron to the larger system. Assigning the virtual Ps orbital allows for the two particle variational optimization in conjunction with the other particles that compose the whole system. This …
