Comparative Analysis On Angular Flow And Mass Transfer In Haemodialysis, J. K. Misra, Pradeep K. Singh, Naseem Ahmad, Pankaj Sharma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Healthy kidney cleans blood and removes unwanted materials in the form of urine. When the kidney does not work properly, dialysis is one of the best solutions. Dialysis required if unhealthy kidney does not remove enough wastes and fluid from the blood. This usually happens when only 10 - 15 % of kidney’s function left. A dialyzer is used to clean blood. In an attempt to address clinical and experimental discrepancies, compartmental theoretical models have been used. Noda et al. (1979) were among the first to introduce a theoretical model on mass transfer using countercurrent flows. Their proposed model assumes …

Functional Dimension Of Solution Space Of Differential Operators Of Constant Strength, Morteza Shafii-Mousavi Jun 2019

Functional Dimension Of Solution Space Of Differential Operators Of Constant Strength, Morteza Shafii-Mousavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A differential operator with constant coefficients is hypoelliptic if and only if its solution space is of finite functional dimension. We extend this property to operators with variable coefficient. We prove that an equally strong differential operator with variable coefficients has the same property. In addition, we extend the Zielezny’s result to operators with variable coefficients; prove that an operator with analytic coefficients on ℝn is elliptic if and only if locally the functional dimension of its solution space is the same as the Euclidean dimension n.

Study Of Specially And Temporally Dependent Adsorption Coefficient In Heterogeneous Porous Medium, Dilip K. Jaiswal, Gulrana _ Jun 2019

Study Of Specially And Temporally Dependent Adsorption Coefficient In Heterogeneous Porous Medium, Dilip K. Jaiswal, Gulrana _

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

One-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) is studied along unsteady longitudinal flow through a semi-infinite heterogeneous medium. Adsorption coefficient is considered temporally and spatially–dependent function i.e., expressed in degenerate form. The dispersion parameter is considered as inversely proportional to adsorption coefficient. The input source is of pulse type. The Laplace Transformation Technique (LTT) is used to obtain the analytical solution by introducing certain new independent variables through separate transformations. The effects of adsorption, heterogeneity and unsteadiness are investigated and discussed with the help of various graphs.

The Martingale Approach To Financial Mathematics, Jordan M. Rowley Jun 2019

The Martingale Approach To Financial Mathematics, Jordan M. Rowley

Master's Theses

In this thesis, we will develop the fundamental properties of financial mathematics, with a focus on establishing meaningful connections between martingale theory, stochastic calculus, and measure-theoretic probability. We first consider a simple binomial model in discrete time, and assume the impossibility of earning a riskless profit, known as arbitrage. Under this no-arbitrage assumption alone, we stumble upon a strange new probability measure Q, according to which every risky asset is expected to grow as though it were a bond. As it turns out, this measure Q also gives the arbitrage-free pricing formula for every asset on our market. In …

Enhancement Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods Through The Use Of The Residual, Haley Dozier May 2019

Enhancement Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods Through The Use Of The Residual, Haley Dozier

Dissertations

Depending on the type of equation, finding the solution of a time-dependent partial differential equation can be quite challenging. Although modern time-stepping methods for solving these equations have become more accurate for a small number of grid points, in a lot of cases the scalability of those methods leaves much to be desired. That is, unless the timestep is chosen to be sufficiently small, the computed solutions might exhibit unreasonable behavior with large input sizes. Therefore, to improve accuracy as the number of grid points increases, the time-steps must be chosen to be even smaller to reach a reasonable solution. …

Ergodicity For The 3d Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations Perturbed By Lévy Noise, Manil T. Mohan, K. Sakthivel, Sivaguru S. Sritharan

Faculty Publications

In this work we construct a Markov family of martingale solutions for 3D stochastic Navier–Stokes equations (SNSE) perturbed by Lévy noise with periodic boundary conditions. Using the Kolmogorov equations of integrodifferential type associated with the SNSE perturbed by Lévy noise, we construct a transition semigroup and establish the existence of a unique invariant measure. We also show that it is ergodic and strongly mixing.

Mathematical Models: The Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This research study used mathematical models to analyze and depicted specific battle situations and the outcomes of the zombie apocalypse. The original models that predicted warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse models were fictional expansions upon mathematical models used to examine infectious diseases. In this paper, I analyzed and compared different mathematical models by examining each model’s set of assumptions and the impact of the change in variables on the population classes. The purpose of this study was to understand the basics of the discrete dynamical systems and to determine the similarities between imaginary and realistic models. …

Mathematical Modeling: Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer

Student Scholar Showcase

Mathematical models are systems using mathematical concepts to explain various problems. Mathematical models examine realistic issues such as the different outcomes of wars and fictional problems such as the upcoming zombie apocalypse. The original predictor models of warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse is a fictional expansion upon mathematical models for infectious diseases. In this paper, we examined and compared the basic versions of these dynamic models by analyzing each model’s set of variables, assumptions, and objectives. The basic versions of the Lanchester equations are the area aimed model and the aimed fire model. While the zombie …

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We survey a variety of results about partially isometric matrices. We focus primarily on results that are distinctly finite-dimensional. For example, we cover a recent solution to the similarity problem for partial isometries. We also discuss the unitary similarity problem and several other results.

Algorithms To Approximate Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In Three Dimensions, Ray Dambrose Mar 2019

Algorithms To Approximate Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In Three Dimensions, Ray Dambrose

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The focus of this research was to develop numerical algorithms to approximate solutions of Poisson's equation in three dimensional rectangular prism domains. Numerical analysis of partial differential equations is vital to understanding and modeling these complex problems. Poisson's equation can be approximated with a finite difference approximation. A system of equations can be formed that gives solutions at internal points of the domain. A computer program was developed to solve this system with inputs such as boundary conditions and a nonhomogenous source function. Approximate solutions are compared with exact solutions to prove their accuracy. The program is tested with an …

Analytical Wave Solutions Of The Space Time Fractional Modified Regularized Long Wave Equation Involving The Conformable Fractional Derivative, M. Hafiz Uddin, Md. Ashrafuzzaman Khan, M. Ali Akbar, Md. Abdul Haque

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The space time fractional modified regularized long wave equation is a model equation to the gravitational water waves in the long-wave occupancy, shallow waters waves in coastal seas, the hydro-magnetic waves in cold plasma, the phonetic waves in dissident quartz and phonetic gravitational waves in contractible liquids. In nonlinear science and engineering, the mentioned equation is applied to analyze the one way tract of long waves in seas and harbors. In this study, the closed form traveling wave solutions to the above equation are evaluated due to conformable fractional derivatives through double (G'⁄G,1⁄G)-expansion method and the Exp-function method. The existence …

Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Solution For Thermal Radiation And Chemical Reaction Effects On Electrical Mhd Jeffrey Fluid Flow Over A Stretching Sheet Through Porous Media With Heat Source, Gossaye Aliy, Naikoti Kishan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, the problem of thermal radiation and chemical reaction effects on electrical MHD Jeffrey fluid flow over a stretching surface through a porous medium with the heat source is presented. We obtained the approximate analytical solution of the nonlinear differential equations governing the problem using the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method (OHAM). Comparison of results has been made with the numerical solutions from the literature, and a very good agreement has been observed. Subsequently, effects of governing parameters of the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are presented graphically and discussed.

Active Control Of A Forced Mindlin-Type Beam, Kenan Yildirim Feb 2019

Active Control Of A Forced Mindlin-Type Beam, Kenan Yildirim

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this study, optimal dynamic response control of a forced Mindlin-type beam is studied. The beam under consideration, which consists of central host layer and two piezoelectric patch actuators bonded on perfectly to both sides of the beam. It is assumed that the beam is subject to the forcing function, initially at rest and undeformed. Hence, a forced Mindlin-type beam is considered for active vibration control. For this aim, well-posedness and controllability of the system are presented. Performance index functional to be minimized by using minimum level of control voltage consists of a weighted quadratic functions of displacement and velocity …

Efficient Local Comparison Of Images Using Krawtchouk Descriptors, Julian Deville Jan 2019

Efficient Local Comparison Of Images Using Krawtchouk Descriptors, Julian Deville

Online Theses and Dissertations

It is known that image comparison can prove cumbersome in both computational complexity and runtime, due to factors such as the rotation, scaling, and translation of the object in question. Due to the locality of Krawtchouk polynomials, relatively few descriptors are necessary to describe a given image, and this can be achieved with minimal memory usage. Using this method, not only can images be described efficiently as a whole, but specific regions of images can be described as well without cropping. Due to this property, queries can be found within a single large image, or collection of large images, which …

Approximations In Reconstructing Discontinuous Conductivities In The Calderón Problem, George H. Lytle Jan 2019

Approximations In Reconstructing Discontinuous Conductivities In The Calderón Problem, George H. Lytle

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In 2014, Astala, Päivärinta, Reyes, and Siltanen conducted numerical experiments reconstructing a piecewise continuous conductivity. The algorithm of the shortcut method is based on the reconstruction algorithm due to Nachman, which assumes a priori that the conductivity is Hölder continuous. In this dissertation, we prove that, in the presence of infinite-precision data, this shortcut procedure accurately recovers the scattering transform of an essentially bounded conductivity, provided it is constant in a neighborhood of the boundary. In this setting, Nachman’s integral equations have a meaning and are still uniquely solvable.

To regularize the reconstruction, Astala et al. employ a high frequency …

Equatorial Wave–Current Interactions, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2019

Equatorial Wave–Current Interactions, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

We study the nonlinear equations of motion for equatorial wave–current interactions in the physically realistic setting of azimuthal two-dimensional inviscid flows with piecewise constant vorticity in a two-layer fluid with a flat bed and a free surface. We derive a Hamiltonian formulation for the nonlinear governing equations that is adequate for structure-preserving perturbations, at the linear and at the nonlinear level. Linear theory reveals some important features of the dynamics, highlighting differences between the short- and long-wave regimes. The fact that ocean energy is concentrated in the long-wave propagation modes motivates the pursuit of in-depth nonlinear analysis in the long-wave …

Riemann-Hilbert Problem, Integrability And Reductions, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Aleksander Stefanov

Articles

Abstract. The present paper is dedicated to integrable models with Mikhailov reduction groups GR ≃ Dh. Their Lax representation allows us to prove, that their solution is equivalent to solving Riemann-Hilbert problems, whose contours depend on the realization of the GR-action on the spectral parameter. Two new examples of Nonlinear Evolution Equations (NLEE) with Dh symmetries are presented.

Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov Jan 2019

Surface Waves Over Currents And Uneven Bottom, Alan Compelli, Rossen Ivanov, Calin I. Martin, Michail D. Todorov

Articles

The propagation of surface water waves interacting with a current and an uneven bottom is studied. Such a situation is typical for ocean waves where the winds generate currents in the top layer of the ocean. The role of the bottom topography is taken into account since it also influences the local wave and current patterns. Specific scaling of the variables is selected which leads to approximations of Boussinesq and KdV types. The arising KdV equation with variable coefficients, dependent on the bottom topography, is studied numerically when the initial condition is in the form of the one soliton solution …

The Application Of Contemporary Numerical Methods To The Modeling, Analysis, And Uncertainty Quantification Of Glacier Dynamics, Jacob Zachary Downs Jan 2019

The Application Of Contemporary Numerical Methods To The Modeling, Analysis, And Uncertainty Quantification Of Glacier Dynamics, Jacob Zachary Downs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Warming temperatures have led to accelerating ice loss from the Greenland ice sheet, contributing to global sea level rise. Understanding the stability of the Greenland ice sheet to further warming is crucial to estimating rates of sea level rise over the next century. Estimating sea level rise is complicated by uncertainties in the physical mechanisms governing ice motion as well as uncertainties in the broader Arctic climate system of which the ice sheet is an integral part. In chapter 2, we focus on how surface melt water input to the ice sheet bed influences the rate of basal sliding, which …

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Convection-Diffusion Equations And Applications In Petroleum Engineering, Nattaporn Chuenjarern Jan 2019

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Convection-Diffusion Equations And Applications In Petroleum Engineering, Nattaporn Chuenjarern

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation contains research in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods applying to convection-diffusion equations. It contains both theoretical analysis and applications. Initially, we develop a conservative local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacement problem in two space dimensions. The main difficulty is how to deal with the discontinuity of approximations of velocity, u, in the convection term across the cell interfaces. To overcome the problems, we apply the idea of LDG with IMEX time marching using the diffusion term to control the convection term. Optimal error estimates in Linfinity(0, T; L2 …

Multiscale Mathematical Modelling Of Nonlinear Nanowire Resonators For Biological Applications, Rosa Fallahpourghadikolaei Jan 2019

Multiscale Mathematical Modelling Of Nonlinear Nanowire Resonators For Biological Applications, Rosa Fallahpourghadikolaei

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Nanoscale systems fabricated with low-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes, nanowires, quantum dots, and more recently graphene sheets, have fascinated researchers from different fields due to their extraordinary and unique physical properties. For example, the remarkable mechanical properties of nanoresonators empower them to have a very high resonant frequency up to the order of giga to terahertz. The ultra-high frequency of these systems attracted the attention of researchers in the area of bio-sensing with the idea to implement them for detection of tiny bio-objects. In this thesis, we originally propose and analyze a mathematical model for nonlinear vibrations of nanowire …

Similarity Analysis Of Three Dimensional Nanofluid Flow By Deductive Group Theoretic Method, Hemangini Shukla, Hema C. Surati, M. G. Timol

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The objective of this paper is to obtain similarity solution of three-dimensional nanofluid flow over flat surface stretched continuously in two lateral directions. Two independent variables from governing equations are reduced by applying deductive two parameter group theoretical method. Partial differential equations with boundary conditions are converted into ordinary differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions. Obtained equations are solved for temperature and velocity. The effect of nanoparticles volume fraction on temperature and velocity profile is investigated.

Linear Stability Analysis With Solution Patterns Due To Varying Thermal Diffusivity For A Convective Flow In A Porous Medium, Dambaru Bhatta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Here we investigate the effect of the vertical rate of change in thermal diffusivity due to a hydrothermal convective flow in a horizontal porous medium. The continuity equation, the heat equation and the momentum-Darcy equation constitute the governing system for the flow in a porous medium. Assuming a vertically varying basic state, we derive the linear system and from this linear system, we compute the critical Rayleigh and wave numbers. Using fourth-order Runge-Kutta and shooting methods, we obtain the marginal stability curves and linear solutions to analyze the solution pattern for different diffusivity parameters.

Conformable Derivative Operator In Modelling Neuronal Dynamics, Mehmet Yavuz, Burcu Yaşkıran

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study presents two new numerical techniques for solving time-fractional one-dimensional cable differential equation (FCE) modeling neuronal dynamics. We have introduced new formulations for the approximate-analytical solution of the FCE by using modified homotopy perturbation method defined with conformable operator (MHPMC) and reduced differential transform method defined with conformable operator (RDTMC), which are derived the solutions for linear-nonlinear fractional PDEs. In order to show the efficiencies of these methods, we have compared the numerical and exact solutions of fractional neuronal dynamics problem. Moreover, we have declared that the proposed models are very accurate and illustrative techniques in determining to approximate-analytical …

Numerical Study Of Singular And Delta Shock Solutions Using A Large Time Step Method, Ilija Jegdic Dec 2018

Numerical Study Of Singular And Delta Shock Solutions Using A Large Time Step Method, Ilija Jegdic

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We illustrate recently proposed large time step method for hyperbolic conservation laws. In the scalar case, it was proved earlier that if the approximate solutions converge boundedly, then they converge to the entropy solution. The main goal of this paper is to consider the large time step method for several systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. We compute approximate solutions to Riemann problems for three genuinely nonlinear one-dimensional systems (the Keyfitz-Kranzer system, the isentropic generalized Chaplygin gas dynamics equations, and the isentropic gas dynamics equations for polytropic gases with vanishing pressure). Besides approximating solutions that contain shocks and rarefaction waves, the …

Creating A Computational Tool To Simulate Vibration Control For Piezoelectric Devices, Ahmet Ozkan Ozer, Emma J. Moore

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Piezoelectric materials have the unique ability to convert electrical energy to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. This project takes a stab to develop a reliable computational tool to simulate the vibration control of a novel “partial differential equation” model for a piezoelectric device, which is designed by integrating electric conducting piezoelectric layers constraining a viscoelastic layer to provide an active and lightweight intelligent structure. Controlling unwanted vibrations on piezoelectric devices (or harvesting energy from ambient vibrations) through piezoelectric layers has been the major focus in cutting-edge engineering applications such as ultrasonic welders and inchworms. The corresponding mathematical models for piezoelectric …

Two Applications Of High Order Methods: Wave Propagation And Accelerator Physics, Oleksii Beznosov Nov 2018

Two Applications Of High Order Methods: Wave Propagation And Accelerator Physics, Oleksii Beznosov

Shared Knowledge Conference

Numerical simulations of partial differential equations (PDE) are used to predict the behavior of complex physics phenomena when the real life experiments are expensive. Discretization of a PDE is the representation of the continuous problem as a discrete problem that can be solved on a computer. The discretization always introduces a certain inaccuracy caused by the numerical approximation. By increasing the computational cost of the numerical algorithm the solution can be computed more accurately. In the theory of numerical analysis this fact is called the convergence of the numerical algorithm. The idea behind high order methods is to improve the …

Boundary Homogenization And Capture Time Distributions Of Semipermeable Membranes With Periodic Patterns Of Reactive Sites, Andrew J. Bernoff, Daniel Schmidt, Alan E. Lindsay

We consider the capture dynamics of a particle undergoing a random walk in a half- space bounded by a plane with a periodic pattern of absorbing pores. In particular, we numerically measure and asymptotically characterize the distribution of capture times. Numerically we develop a kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method that exploits exact solutions to create an efficient particle- based simulation of the capture time that deals with the infinite half-space exactly and has a run time that is independent of how far from the pores one begins. Past researchers have proposed homogenizing the surface boundary conditions, replacing the reflecting (Neumann) …
