From Wave Propagation To Spin Dynamics: Mathematical And Computational Aspects, Oleksii Beznosov Nov 2020

From Wave Propagation To Spin Dynamics: Mathematical And Computational Aspects, Oleksii Beznosov

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this work we concentrate on two separate topics which pose certain numerical challenges. The first topic is the spin dynamics of electrons in high-energy circular accelerators. We introduce a stochastic differential equation framework to study spin depolarization and spin equilibrium. This framework allows the mathematical study of known equations and new equations modelling the spin distribution of an electron bunch. A spin distribution is governed by a so-called Bloch equation, which is a linear Fokker-Planck type PDE, in general posed in six dimensions. We propose three approaches to approximate solutions, using analytical and modern numerical techniques. We also present …

Numerical Simulations Of Nonlinear Waves And Their Stability: Stokes Waves And Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation, Anastassiya Semenova Nov 2020

Numerical Simulations Of Nonlinear Waves And Their Stability: Stokes Waves And Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation, Anastassiya Semenova

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The present work offers an investigation of dynamics and stability of nonlinear waves in Hamiltonian systems. The first part of the manuscript discusses the classical problem of water waves on the surface of an ideal fluid in 2D. We demonstrate how to construct the Stokes waves, and how to apply a continuation method to find waves in close vicinity to the limiting Stokes wave. We provide new insight into the stability of the Stokes waves by identifying previously inaccessible branches of instability in the equations of motion for the fluid. We provide numerical evidence that pairs of unstable eigenvalues of …

Controlling Aircraft Yaw Movement By Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic, Yamama Shafeek, Laith Majeed, Rasha Naji Oct 2020

Controlling Aircraft Yaw Movement By Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic, Yamama Shafeek, Laith Majeed, Rasha Naji

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

Aircraft yaw movement is essential in maneuvering; it has been controlled by some methods which achieved tracking but not fast enough. This paper performs the dynamic modeling of aircraft yaw movement and develops PI and PI-like interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller for the model. The mathematical model is derived by inserting the parameters values of single-engine Navion aircraft into standard equations. Using Matlab/ Simulink platform, the controllers' effectivity is tested and verified in two different cases; system without disturbance and when system is disturbed by some wind gust to investigate the system robustness. Simulation results show that PI controller response …

A Phase-Field Approach To Diffusion-Driven Fracture, Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander Dunkel Oct 2020

A Phase-Field Approach To Diffusion-Driven Fracture, Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander Dunkel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years applied mathematicians have used modern analysis to develop variational phase-field models of fracture based on Griffith's theory. These variational phase-field models of fracture have gained popularity due to their ability to predict the crack path and handle crack nucleation and branching.

In this work, we are interested in coupled problems where a diffusion process drives the crack propagation. We extend the variational phase-field model of fracture to account for diffusion-driving fracture and study the convergence of minimizers using gamma-convergence. We will introduce Newton's method for the constrained optimization problem and present an algorithm to solve the diffusion-driven …

Numerical Approach To Non-Darcy Mixed Convective Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluid On A Vertical Surface With Varying Surface Temperature And Heat Source, Ajaya Prasad Baitharu, Sachidananda Sahoo, Gauranga Charan Dash

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

An analysis is performed on non-Darcy mixed convective flow of non-Newtonian fluid past a vertical surface in the presence of volumetric heat source originated by some electromechanical or other devices. Further, the vertical bounding surface is subjected to power law variation of wall temperature, but the numerical solution is obtained for isothermal case. In the present non-Darcy flow model, effects of high flow rate give rise to inertia force. The inertia force in conjunction with volumetric heat source/sink is considered in the present analysis. The Runge-Kutta method of fourth order with shooting technique has been applied to obtain the numerical …

Heat And Mass Transfer Of Mhd Casson Nanofluid Flow Through A Porous Medium Past A Stretching Sheet With Newtonian Heating And Chemical Reaction, Lipika Panigrahi, Jayaprakash Panda, Kharabela Swain, Gouranga Charan Dash Oct 2020

Heat And Mass Transfer Of Mhd Casson Nanofluid Flow Through A Porous Medium Past A Stretching Sheet With Newtonian Heating And Chemical Reaction, Lipika Panigrahi, Jayaprakash Panda, Kharabela Swain, Gouranga Charan Dash

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

An analysis is made to investigate the effect of inclined magnetic field on Casson nanofluid over a stretching sheet embedded in a saturated porous matrix in presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat source/sink. The heat equation takes care of energy loss due to viscous dissipation and Joulian dissipation. The mass transfer and heat equation become coupled due to thermophoresis and Brownian motion, two important characteristics of nanofluid flow. The convective terms of momentum, heat and mass transfer equations render the equations non-linear. This present flow model is pressure gradient driven and it is eliminated with the help of potential/ambient flow …

Advection-Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Drug Concentration In A Lymph Node, Ting Yan Aug 2020

Advection-Reaction-Diffusion Model Of Drug Concentration In A Lymph Node, Ting Yan

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

It is recognized that there exist reservoirs of HIV located outside the bloodstream, and that these reservoirs hinder the efficacy of antiretroviral medication regimens in combating the virus. The prevailing theories regarding these reservoirs point to the lymphatic system. In this work, we discuss a novel computational model of viral dynamics in the lymph node, to allow numerical studies of viral “reservoirs” causing reinfection. Our model consists of a system of advection-reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs), where the diffusion coefficients vary between species (virus, drugs, lymphocytes) and include discontinuous jumps to capture differing properties of internal lymph node structures. We …

Variable Compact Multi-Point Upscaling Schemes For Anisotropic Diffusion Problems In Three-Dimensions, James Quinlan Aug 2020

Variable Compact Multi-Point Upscaling Schemes For Anisotropic Diffusion Problems In Three-Dimensions, James Quinlan

Dissertations

Simulation is a useful tool to mitigate risk and uncertainty in subsurface flow models that contain geometrically complex features and in which the permeability field is highly heterogeneous. However, due to the level of detail in the underlying geocellular description, an upscaling procedure is needed to generate a coarsened model that is computationally feasible to perform simulations. These procedures require additional attention when coefficients in the system exhibit full-tensor anisotropy due to heterogeneity or not aligned with the computational grid. In this thesis, we generalize a multi-point finite volume scheme in several ways and benchmark it against the industry-standard routines. …

Convolution Inequalities And Applications To Partial Differential Equations., Matthew Reynolds Aug 2020

Convolution Inequalities And Applications To Partial Differential Equations., Matthew Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we develop methods for obtaining the existence of mild solutions to certain partial differential equations with initial data in weighted L p spaces and apply them to some examples as well as improve the solutions to some known PDEs studied extensively in the literature. We begin by obtaining a version of a Stein-Weiss integral inequality which we will use to obtain general convolution inequalities in weighted L p spaces using the techniques of interpolation. We will then use these convolution inequalities to make estimates on PDEs that will help us obtain mild solutions as fixed points of …

Dynamics Of Discontinuities In Elastic Solids, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski Jul 2020

Dynamics Of Discontinuities In Elastic Solids, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

The paper is devoted to evolving discontinuities in elastic solids. A discontinuity is represented as a singular set of material points. Evolution of a discontinuity is driven by the configurational force acting at such a set. The main attention is paid to the determination of the velocity of a propagating discontinuity. Martensitic phase transition fronts and brittle cracks are considered as representative examples.

Mhd Mixed Convective Flow Of Maxwell Nanofluid Past A Porous Vertical Stretching Sheet In Presence Of Chemical Reaction, Hunegnaw Dessie, Demeke Fissha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this study, MHD mixed convective flow of Maxwell nanofluid past a porous vertical stretching sheet in the presence of chemical reaction is investigated. The governing partial differential equations with the corresponding boundary conditions are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations via Lie group analysis. Numerical solutions of these equations are obtained by Runge-Kutta fourth order method along with shooting technique and the results obtained for different governing flow parameters are drawn graphically and their effects on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are discussed. The values of skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number coefficient and Sherwood number coefficient are presented …

The Impact Of Nonlinear Harvesting On A Ratio-Dependent Holling-Tanner Predator-Prey System And Optimum Harvesting, Manoj Kumar Singh, B. S. Bhadauria

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a Holling-Tanner predator-prey model with ratio-dependent functional response and non-linear prey harvesting is analyzed. The mathematical analysis of the model includes existence, uniqueness and boundedness of positive solutions. It also includes the permanence, local stability and bifurcation analysis of the model. The ratio-dependent model always has complex dynamics in the vicinity of the origin; the dynamical behaviors of the system in the vicinity of the origin have been studied by means of blow up transformation. The parametric conditions under which bionomic equilibrium point exist have been derived. Further, an optimal harvesting policy has been discussed by using …

A Comparative Study Of Shehu Variational Iteration Method And Shehu Decomposition Method For Solving Nonlinear Caputo Time-Fractional Wave-Like Equations With Variable Coefficients, Ali Khalouta, Abdelouahab Kadem Jun 2020

A Comparative Study Of Shehu Variational Iteration Method And Shehu Decomposition Method For Solving Nonlinear Caputo Time-Fractional Wave-Like Equations With Variable Coefficients, Ali Khalouta, Abdelouahab Kadem

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a comparative study between two different methods for solving nonlinear Caputo time-fractional wave-like equations with variable coefficients is conducted. These two methods are called the Shehu variational iteration method (SVIM) and the Shehu decomposition method (SDM). To illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methods, three different numerical examples are presented. The results obtained show that the two methods are powerful and efficient methods which both give approximations of higher accuracy and closed form solutions if existing. However, the SVIM has an advantage over SDM that it solves the nonlinear problems without using the Adomian polynomials. …

Study On Solving Two-Dimensional Linear And Nonlinear Volterra Partial Integro-Differential Equations By Reduced Differential Transform Method, Seyyedeh Roodabeh Moosavi Noori, Nasir Taghizadeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we study on the analytical and numerical solution of two-dimensional linear and nonlinear Volterra partial integro-differential equations with the appropriate initial condition by means of reduced differential transform method. The advantage of this method is its simplicity in using, it solves the problem directly without the need for linearization, perturbation, or any other transformation and gives the solution in the form of convergent power series with elegantly computed components. The validity and efficiency of this method are illustrated by considering five computational examples.

A New Class Of Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Wave Equations In Second-Order Form, Lu Zhang May 2020

A New Class Of Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Wave Equations In Second-Order Form, Lu Zhang

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

Discontinuous Galerkin methods are widely used in many practical fields. In this thesis, we focus on a new class of discontinuous Galerkin methods for second-order wave equations. This thesis is constructed by three main parts. In the first part, we study the convergence properties of the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin proposed in [3] for wave equations. We improve the existing suboptimal error estimates to an optimal convergence rate in the energy norm. In the second part, we generalize the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method proposed in [3] to the advective wave equation and semilinear wave equation in second-order form. Energy-conserving or energy-dissipating …

Shallow Water Equations And Floor Topography Affect On Sea Surface, Chase Jones May 2020

Shallow Water Equations And Floor Topography Affect On Sea Surface, Chase Jones

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

For this research project, we have been doing research on the shallow water equations: a set of hyperbolic partial differential equations. These equations exist as a set of three primary equations [2]. However, there is another version of the shallow water equations called the Saint Venant’s equations. These equations are similar to the standard shallow water equations, but these equations have been reduced to one-dimension. The primary goal of our research has been to investigate the behavior and mathematical construction of the Saint Venant’s equations and model these equations using COMSOL. Regardless of the equation type, standard or Saint Venant’s, …

A Time Integration Method Of Approximate Particular Solutions For Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations, Cyril Ocloo May 2020

A Time Integration Method Of Approximate Particular Solutions For Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations, Cyril Ocloo

Master's Theses

We consider a time-dependent method which is coupled with the method of approximate particular solutions (MAPS) of Delta-shaped basis functions and the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) to solve nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Firstly, we convert a nonlinear problem into a sequence of time-dependent non-homogeneous boundary value problems through a fictitious time integration method. The superposition principle is applied to split the numerical solution at each time step into an approximate particular solution and a homogeneous solution. Delta-shaped basis functions are used to provide an approximation of the source function at each time step. The purpose of this is to …

The Long Time Behavior Of The Predator-Prey Model With Holling Type Iii, Regen S. Mcgee May 2020

The Long Time Behavior Of The Predator-Prey Model With Holling Type Iii, Regen S. Mcgee

Honors Theses

In this paper, the classical Lotka-Volterra model is expanded based on functional response of Holling type III to analyze a dynamical predator-prey relationship with hunting cooperation (a) and the Allee effect among predators. The stability of equilibrium solutions was first analyzed by deriving a Jacobian matrix from partial derivatives of our model. Newly derived eigenvalues are then used to determine the stability. The viability of the model is then demonstrated by using MATLAB. The numerical results show a clear Allee effect and a variety of possible phenomena related to stability when carrying capacity (k) is varied. Two different types of …

Hadamard Well-Posedness For Two Nonlinear Structure Acoustic Models, Andrew Becklin May 2020

Hadamard Well-Posedness For Two Nonlinear Structure Acoustic Models, Andrew Becklin

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation focuses on the Hadamard well-posedness of two nonlinear structure acoustic models, each consisting of a semilinear wave equation defined on a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ strongly coupled with a Berger plate equation acting only on a flat portion of the boundary of $\Omega$. In each case, the PDE is of the following form: \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_{tt}-\Delta u +g_1(u_t)=f(u) &\text{ in } \Omega \times (0,T),\\[1mm] w_{tt}+\Delta^2w+g_2(w_t)+u_t|_{\Gamma}=h(w)&\text{ in }\Gamma\times(0,T),\\[1mm] u=0&\text{ on }\Gamma_0\times(0,T),\\[1mm] \partial_\nu u=w_t&\text{ on }\Gamma\times(0,T),\\[1mm] w=\partial_{\nu_\Gamma}w=0&\text{ on }\partial\Gamma\times(0,T),\\[1mm] (u(0),u_t(0))=(u_0,u_1),\hspace{5mm}(w(0),w_t(0))=(w_0,w_1), \end{cases} \end{align*} where the initial data reside in the finite energy space, i.e., $$(u_0, u_1)\in H^1_{\Gamma_0}(\Omega) \times L^2(\Omega) \, \text{ …

483— Effectiveness Of Mmr Vaccination In Orthodox Jewish Neighborhoods, Meenu Mundackal Apr 2020

483— Effectiveness Of Mmr Vaccination In Orthodox Jewish Neighborhoods, Meenu Mundackal

GREAT Day Posters

Measles is a highly contagious disease, where large outbreaks arise by direct contact between susceptible (unvaccinated) and infectious individuals. Many Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods were affected by measles from 2018-2019. To quantify the vaccination effort on this susceptible population, a retrospective analysis was used to study the NYC and Rockland County populations using a differential equations model. A subsequent model, known as a realistically-structured network model, studied only the NYC population, in relation to typical household size. Vaccination strategies were applied to three cohorts: unvaccinated family members, members with 1 prior MMR dose, and members with 2 prior MMR doses. The …

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya Apr 2020

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fluid mechanics occupies a privileged position in the sciences; it is taught in various science departments including physics, mathematics, environmental sciences and mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, with each highlighting a different aspect or interpretation of the foundation and applications of fluids. Doll’s fluid analogy [5] for this idea is especially relevant to this issue: “Emergence of creativity from complex flow of knowledge—example of Benard convection pattern as an analogy—dissipation or dispersal of knowledge (complex knowledge) results in emergent structures, i.e., creativity which in the context of education should be thought of as a unique way to arrange information so …

Existence And Stability Results Of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Equations With Nonlinear Integral Boundary Condition On Time Scales, Vipin Kumar, Muslim Malik Apr 2020

Existence And Stability Results Of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Equations With Nonlinear Integral Boundary Condition On Time Scales, Vipin Kumar, Muslim Malik

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to a nonlinear fractional differential equation with nonlinear integral boundary conditions on time scales. We used the fixed point theorems due to Banach, Schaefer’s, nonlinear alternative of Leray Schauder’s type and Krasnoselskii’s to establish these results. In addition, we study Ulam-Hyer’s (UH) type stability result. At the end, we present two examples to show the effectiveness of the obtained analytical results.

Numerical Analysis Of Three-Dimensional Mhd Flow Of Casson Nanofluid Past An Exponentially Stretching Sheet, Madhusudan Senapati, Kharabela Swain, Sampad Kumar Parida

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The convective three dimensional electrically conducting Casson nanofluid flow over an exponentially stretching sheet embedded in a saturated porous medium and subjected to thermal as well as solutal slip in the presence of externally applied transverse magnetic field (force-at-a-distance) is studied. The heat transfer phenomenon includes the viscous dissipation, Joulian dissipation, thermal radiation, contribution of nanofluidity and temperature dependent volumetric heat source. The study of mass diffusion in the presence of chemically reactive species enriches the analysis. The numerical solutions of coupled nonlinear governing equations bring some earlier reported results as particular cases providing a testimony of validation of the …
