Optimal Construction Of A Layer-Ordered Heap And Its Applications, Jake Pennington
Optimal Construction Of A Layer-Ordered Heap And Its Applications, Jake Pennington
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The layer-ordered heap (LOH) is a simple data structure used in algorithms that perform optimal top-$k$ on $X+Y$, algorithms with the best known runtime for top-$k$ on $X_1+X_2+\cdots+X_m$, and the fastest method in practice for computing the most abundant isotopologue peaks in a chemical compound. In the analysis of these algorithms, the rank, $\alpha$, has been treated as a constant and $n$, the size of the array, has been treated as the sole parameter. Here, we explore the algorithmic complexity of LOH construction with $\alpha$ as a parameter, introduce a few algorithms for constructing LOHs, analyze their complexity in both …

Implementing A Neural Network For Supervised Learning With A Random Configuration Of Layers And Nodes, Kane A. Phillips
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Deep learning has a substantial amount of real-life applications, making it an increasingly popular subset of artificial intelligence over the last decade. These applications come to fruition due to the tireless research and implementation of neural networks. This paper goes into detail on the implementation of supervised learning neural networks utilizing MATLAB, with the purpose being to generate a neural network based on specifications given by a user. Such specifications involve how many layers are in the network, and how many nodes are in each layer. The neural network is then trained based on known sample values of a function …

The advanced sensors can be either worn or be embedded into the body of the patients, so as to continuously monitor their health. The information collected in such manner, can be analyzed, aggregated and mined to do the early prediction of diseases. The processing algorithms assist the physicians for the personalization of treatment and it helps to make the …
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the fluid phenomena observed within what is known as the constrained vapor bubble system. The constrained vapor bubble system is a closed system consisting of a quartz cuvette partially filled with liquid and used as a coolant device. Heat is applied to the heater end which causes the liquid to evaporate and condense on the cooled end of the cuvette. Liquid travels back to the heated end via capillary flow in the corners. A pure vapor bubble is formed in the center of the cuvette giving rise to the name of the experiment. The constrained vapor …

Parametric Art, Shaun Pollard, Daanial Ahmad, Satyanand Singh
Publications and Research
Lissajous curves, named after Jules Antoine Lissajous (1822-1880) are generated by the parametric equations =() and =() in its simplistic form. Others have studied these curves and their applications like Nathaniel Bowditch in 1815, and they are often referred to as Bowditch curves as well. Lissajous curves are found in engineering, mathematics, graphic design, physics, and many other backgrounds. In this project entitled “Parametric Art” this project will focus on analyzing these types of equations and manipulating them to create art. We will be investigating these curves by answering a series of questions that elucidate their purpose. Using Maple, which …
A Mathematical Model Of Avian Influenza For Poultry Farm And Its Stability Analysis, Abdul Malek, Ashabul Hoque
A Mathematical Model Of Avian Influenza For Poultry Farm And Its Stability Analysis, Abdul Malek, Ashabul Hoque
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper aims to estimate the basic reproduction number for Avian Influenza outbreak in local and global poultry industries. In this concern, we apply the SEIAVR compartmental model which is developed based on the well-known SEIR model. The SEIAVR model provides the mathematical formulations of the basic reproduction number, final size relationship and a relationship between these two phenomena. The developed model Equations are solved numerically with the help of Range-Kutta method and the values of initial parameters are taken from the several literatures and reports. The calculated result of basic reproduction number shows that it is locally and globally …
Impulse Effect On The Food-Limited Population Model With Piecewise Constant Argument, Fatma Karakoç
Impulse Effect On The Food-Limited Population Model With Piecewise Constant Argument, Fatma Karakoç
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The qualitative study of mathematical models is an important area in applied mathematics. In this paper, a version of the food-limited population model with piecewise constant argument under impulse effect is investigated. Differential equations with piecewise constant arguments are related to difference equations. First, a representation for the solutions of the food-limited population model is stated in terms of the solutions of corresponding difference equation. Then using linearized oscillation theory for difference equations, a sufficient condition for the oscillation of the solutions about positive equilibrium point is obtained. Moreover, asymptotic behavior of the non-oscillatory solutions are investigated. Later, applying the …
Explicit Formulas For Solutions Of Maxwell’S Equations In Conducting Media, Valery Yakhno
Explicit Formulas For Solutions Of Maxwell’S Equations In Conducting Media, Valery Yakhno
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A new explicit presentation of the fundamental solution of the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations in conducting isotropic media is derived by Hadamard techniques through the fundamental solution of the telegraph operator. This presentation is used to obtain explicit formulas for generalized solutions of the initial value problem for Maxwell’s equations. A new explicit Kirchhoff’s formula for the classical solution of the initial value problem for the Maxwell equations in conducting media is derived. The obtained explicit formulas can be used in the boundary integral method, Green’s functions method and for computation of electric and magnetic fields in conducting media and materials.
Structure, Neutrostructure, And Antistructure In Science, Florentin Smarandache
Structure, Neutrostructure, And Antistructure In Science, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In any science, a classical Theorem, defined on a given space, is a statement that is 100% true (i.e. true for all elements of the space). To prove that a classical theorem is false, it is sufficient to get a single counter-example where the statement is false. Therefore, the classical sciences do not leave room for partial truth of a theorem (or a statement). But, in our world and in our everyday life, we have many more examples of statements that are only partially true, than statements that are totally true. The NeutroTheorem and AntiTheorem are generalizations and alternatives of …

Stability Of Modified Host-Parasitoid Model With Allee Effect, Özlem A. Gümüs, A. G. Maria Selvam, R. Janagaraj
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper deals with a host-parasitoid model subject to Allee effect and its dynamical behavior. Steady state points of the proposed host-parasitoid model are computed. Stability properties are analyzed with eigen values of Jacobian matrix which are determined at the steady states. Theoretical findings are supported by numerical illustrations and enhanced by pictorial representations such as bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits and local amplifications for different parameter values. Existence of chaotic behavior in the system is established via bifurcation and sensitivity analysis of the system at the initial conditions. Various phase portraits are simulated for a better understanding of the qualitative …
Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Sum Of Cubes Of The First N Integers, Obiamaka L. Agu
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In Calculus we learned that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k = [n(n+1)]/2 , that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^2 = [n(n+1)(2n+1)]/6 , and that Sum^{n}_{k=1} k^{3} = (n(n+1)/2)^{2}. These formulas are useful when solving for the area below quadratic or cubic function over an interval [a, b]. This tedious process, solving for areas under a quadratic or a cubic, served as motivation for the introduction of Riemman integrals. For the overzealous math student, these steps were replaced by a simpler method of evaluating antiderivatives at the endpoints a and b. From my recollection, a former instructor informed us to do the value of memorizing these formulas. …

On The Construction And Mathematical Analysis Of The Wavelet Transform And Its Matricial Properties, Diego Sejas Viscarra
On The Construction And Mathematical Analysis Of The Wavelet Transform And Its Matricial Properties, Diego Sejas Viscarra
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We study the properties of computational methods for the Wavelet Transform and its Inverse from the point of view of Linear Algebra. We present a characterization of such methods as matrix products, proving in particular that each iteration corresponds to the multiplication of an adequate unitary matrix. From that point we prove that some important properties of the Continuous Wavelet Transform, such as linearity, distributivity over matrix multiplication, isometry, etc., are inherited by these discrete methods.
This work is divided into four sections. The first section corresponds to the classical theoretical foundation of harmonic analysis with wavelets; it is used …
Dna Self-Assembly Design For Gear Graphs, Chiara Mattamira
Dna Self-Assembly Design For Gear Graphs, Chiara Mattamira
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Application of graph theory to the well-known complementary properties of DNA strands has resulted in new insights about more efficient ways to form DNA nanostructures, which have been discovered as useful tools for drug delivery, biomolecular computing, and biosensors. The key concept underlying DNA nanotechnology is the formation of complete DNA complexes out of a given collection of branched junction molecules. These molecules can be modeled in the abstract as portions of graphs made up of vertices and half-edges, where complete edges are representations of double-stranded DNA pieces that have joined together. For efficiency, one aim is to minimize the …
Cell Assembly Detection In Low Firing-Rate Spike Train Data, Phan Minh Duc Truong
Cell Assembly Detection In Low Firing-Rate Spike Train Data, Phan Minh Duc Truong
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
Cell assemblies, defined as groups of neurons forming temporal spike coordination, are thought to be fundamental units supporting major cognitive functions. However, detecting cell assemblies is challenging since they can occur at a range of time scales and with a range of precisions, from synchronous spikes to co-variations in firing rate. In this dissertation, we use a recently published cell assembly detection (CAD) algorithm that is capable of detecting assemblies at a range of time scales and precisions. We first showed that the CAD method can be applied to sparser spike train data than what have previously been reported. This …
A Novel Correction For The Adjusted Box-Pierce Test — New Risk Factors For Emergency Department Return Visits Within 72 Hours For Children With Respiratory Conditions — General Pediatric Model For Understanding And Predicting Prolonged Length Of Stay, Sidy Danioko
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This thesis represents the results of three research projects that underline the breadth and depth of my interests.
Firstly, I devoted some efforts to the well-known Box-Pierce goodness-of-fit tests for time series models which has been an important research topic over the last few decades. All previously proposed tests are focused on changes of the test statistics. Instead, I adopted a different approach that takes the best performing test and modifying the rejection region. Thus, I developed a semiparametric correction of the Adjusted Box-Pierce test that attains the best I error rates for all sample sizes and lags and outperforms …
Linear Methods For Regression With Small Sample Sizes Relative To The Number Of Variables., Rajesh Sikder
Linear Methods For Regression With Small Sample Sizes Relative To The Number Of Variables., Rajesh Sikder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In data sets where there are a small number of observations but a large number of variables observed for each observation, ordinary least squares estimation cannot be used for regression models. There are many alternative including stepwise regression, penalized methods such as ridge regression and the LASSO, and methods based on derived inputs such as principal components regression and partial least squares regression. In this thesis, these five methods are described. K-fold cross validation is also discussed as a way for determining regularization parameters for each method. The performance of these methods in estimation and prediction is also examined through …

Combination Of The Single-Valued Neutrosophic Fuzzy Set And The Soft Set With Applications In Decision-Making, Florentin Smarandache, Ahmed Mostafa Khalil, Dunqian Chao, A. A. Azzam, W. Alharby
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this article, we propose a novel concept of the single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set by combining the single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy set and the soft set. For possible applications, five kinds of operations (e.g., subset, equal, union, intersection, and complement) on single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft sets are presented. Then, several theoretical operations of single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft sets are given. In addition, the first type for the fuzzy decision-making based on single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set matrix is constructed. Finally, we present the second type by using the AND operation of the single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set for fuzzy decision-making …
Quantitatively Motivated Model Development Framework: Downstream Analysis Effects Of Normalization Strategies, Jessica M. Rudd
Quantitatively Motivated Model Development Framework: Downstream Analysis Effects Of Normalization Strategies, Jessica M. Rudd
Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations
Through a review of epistemological frameworks in social sciences, history of frameworks in statistics, as well as the current state of research, we establish that there appears to be no consistent, quantitatively motivated model development framework in data science, and the downstream analysis effects of various modeling choices are not uniformly documented. Examples are provided which illustrate that analytic choices, even if justifiable and statistically valid, have a downstream analysis effect on model results. This study proposes a unified model development framework that allows researchers to make statistically motivated modeling choices within the development pipeline. Additionally, a simulation study is …

Mhd Mixed Convective Flow Of Maxwell Nanofluid Past A Porous Vertical Stretching Sheet In Presence Of Chemical Reaction, Hunegnaw Dessie, Demeke Fissha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this study, MHD mixed convective flow of Maxwell nanofluid past a porous vertical stretching sheet in the presence of chemical reaction is investigated. The governing partial differential equations with the corresponding boundary conditions are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations via Lie group analysis. Numerical solutions of these equations are obtained by Runge-Kutta fourth order method along with shooting technique and the results obtained for different governing flow parameters are drawn graphically and their effects on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are discussed. The values of skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number coefficient and Sherwood number coefficient are presented …

Dna Complexes Of One Bond-Edge Type, Andrew Tyler Lavengood-Ryan
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
DNA self-assembly is an important tool used in the building of nanostructures and targeted virotherapies. We use tools from graph theory and number theory to encode the biological process of DNA self-assembly. The principal component of this process is to examine collections of branched junction molecules, called pots, and study the types of structures that such pots can realize. In this thesis, we restrict our attention to pots which contain identical cohesive-ends, or a single bond-edge type, and we demonstrate the types and sizes of structures that can be built based on a single characteristic of the pot that is …

Predicting And Comparing The Stock Value Of Chick-Fil-A, Mark Yates
Predicting And Comparing The Stock Value Of Chick-Fil-A, Mark Yates
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
This project focuses on estimating the stock value of Chick-fil-A as if it were a publicly traded company using a comparable analysis method or CAM. We begin by obtaining financial information from Chick-fil-A as well as the amount of locations there are chain-wide. Next we find two publicly traded fast food companies, one that is larger, and one that is smaller than Chick-fil-A and obtain the same information from them. The idea is that Chick-fil-A will lie between theses two companies and we can use the CAM to estimate their stock value. The CAM gives us a multiple of the …

On The Properties Of Solutions Of A Cross-Diffusion System With Nonlinear Boundary Flux, Zafar Rakhmonov, Jasur Urunbaev, Bobur Allaberdiyev
Scientific Journal of Samarkand University
In this paper, based on a self-similar analysis and the method of standard equations, the properties of a nonlinear cross-diffusion system coupled via nonlocal boundary conditions are studied. We are investigated the qualitative properties of solutions of a nonlinear system of parabolic equations of cross-diffusion in a medium coupled with nonlinear boundary conditions. It is proved that for certain values of the numerical parameters of the nonlinear cross-diffusion system of parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary conditions, they may not have global solutions in time. Based on a self-similar analysis and the principle of comparing solutions, a critical exponent of …

From Branches To Fibers - Investigating F-Actin Networks With Biochemistry And Mathematical Modeling, Melissa A. Riddle
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
F-actin networks have different structures throughout the cell depending on their location or mechanical role. For example, at the leading edge of a migrating cell, F-actin is organized in a region called the lamellipodia as a branched network responsible for pushing the membrane outwards. Behind the lamellipodia is a lamellar actin network where focal adhesions and stress fibers originate, and then within the cell cortex, actin is arranged in a gel-like network. Stress fibers are an important organization of F-actin and how they arise from either the branched lamellipodia network or the gel-like cortex network is poorly understood. Our approach …
