Grayscale-Image Encryption Using Random Hill Cipher Over Sln(F) Associated With Discrete Wavelet Transformation, D. C. Mishra, R. K. R. K. Sharma
Grayscale-Image Encryption Using Random Hill Cipher Over Sln(F) Associated With Discrete Wavelet Transformation, D. C. Mishra, R. K. R. K. Sharma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Image data are highly sensitive and prone to incidental decoding by intruders. The security of image data in an insecure network is therefore a major issue. In this paper, we have presented a novel approach for grayscale-image encryption and decryption using Random Hill cipher over SLn(F) associated with discrete wavelet transformation. Earlier techniques for encryption and decryption of image data discussed missing the keys, but in this approach, both the keys and the arrangement of RHC are emphasized. Additionally, keys multiplication side (pre or post) over a grayscale-image data matrix also inevitable to know, to correctly decrypt the encrypted image …
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many organisms, from bacteria to primates, use stochastic movement patterns to find food. These movement patterns, known as search strategies, have recently be- come a focus of ecologists interested in identifying universal properties of optimal foraging behavior. In this dissertation, I describe three contributions to this field. First, I propose a way to extend Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem to the spatially explicit framework of stochastic search strategies. Next, I describe simulations that compare the efficiencies of sensory and memory-based composite search strategies, which involve switching between different behavioral modes. Finally, I explain a new behavioral analysis protocol for identifying the …

Some Geometric Properties Of A New Type Metric Space, Muhammed Çınar, Murat Karakaş, Mikail Et
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we define a metric on our new space and then show that this linear metric space is k-nearly uniform convex and has property beta where p = pk is a bounded sequence of positive real numbers. Finally, we give a result about property (H) by using k-nearly uniform convexity.

Characterization Of The Drilling Via The Vibration Augmenter Of Rotary-Drills And Sound Signal Processing Of Impacted Pipe As A Potential Water Height Assessment Tool, Nicholas Morris
STAR Program Research Presentations
The focus of the internship has been on two topics: a) Characterize the drilling performance of a novel percussive augmenter – this drill was developed by the JPL’s Advanced Technologies Group and its performance was characterized; and b) Examine the feasibility of striking a pipe as a means of assessing the water height inside the pipe. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the possibility of using a simple method of applying impacts to a pipe wall and determining the water height from the sonic characteristic differences including damping, resonance frequencies, etc. Due to multiple variables that are relevant …
Stochastic Dea With A Perfect Object And Its Application To Analysis Of Environmental Efficiency, Alexander Vaninsky
Stochastic Dea With A Perfect Object And Its Application To Analysis Of Environmental Efficiency, Alexander Vaninsky
Publications and Research
The paper introduces stochastic DEA with a Perfect Object (SDEA PO). The Perfect Object (PO) is a virtual Decision Making Unit (DMU) that has the smallest inputs and greatest outputs. Including the PO in a collection of actual objects yields an explicit formula of the efficiency index. Given the distributions of DEA inputs and outputs, this formula allows us to derive the probability distribution of the efficiency score, to find its mathematical expectation, and to deliver common (group–related) and partial (object-related) efficiency components. We apply this approach to a prospective analysis of environmental efficiency of the major national and regional …
On The Impulse Control Of Jump Diffusions, Erhan Bayraktar, Thomas Emmerling, José-Luis Menaldi
On The Impulse Control Of Jump Diffusions, Erhan Bayraktar, Thomas Emmerling, José-Luis Menaldi
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
Regularity of the impulse control problem for a nondegenerate n-dimensional jump diffusion with infinite activity and finite variation jumps was recently examined in [M. H. A. Davis, X. Guo, and G. Wu, SIAM J. Control Optim., 48 (2010), pp. 5276–5293]. Here we extend the analysis to include infinite activity and infinite variation jumps. More specifically, we show that the value function u of the impulse control problem satisfies u ∈ Wloc2,p(Rn).

An Exponential Matrix Method For Numerical Solutions Of Hantavirus Infection Model, Şuayip Yüzbaşi, Mehmet Sezer
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a new matrix method based on exponential polynomials and collocation points is proposed to obtain approximate solutions of Hantavirus infection model corresponding to a class of systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The method converts the model problem into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations by means of the matrix operations and the collocation points. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by the numerical applications and all numerical computations have been made by using a computer program written in Maple.

A Subdivision-Regularization Framework For Preventing Over Fitting Of Data By A Model, Ghulam Mustafa, Abdul Ghaffar, Muhammad Aslam
A Subdivision-Regularization Framework For Preventing Over Fitting Of Data By A Model, Ghulam Mustafa, Abdul Ghaffar, Muhammad Aslam
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
First, we explore the properties of families of odd-point odd-ary parametric approximating subdivision schemes. Then we fine-tune the parameters involved in the family of schemes to maximize the smoothness of the limit curve and error bounds for the distance between the limit curve and the kth level control polygon. After that, we present the subdivision-regularization framework for preventing over fitting of data by model. Demonstration shows that the proposed unified frame work can work well for both noise removal and overfitting prevention in subdivision as well as regularization.

An Ε -Uniform Numerical Method For A System Of Convection-Diffusion Equations With Discontinuous Convection Coefficients And Source Terms, T. Valanarasu, R. M. Priyadharshini, N. Ramanujam, A. Tamilselvan
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a parameter-uniform numerical method is suggested to solve a system of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations with discontinuous convection coefficients and source terms subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition. The second derivative of each equation is multiplied by a distinctly small parameter, which leads to an overlap and interacting interior layer. A numerical method based on a piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh is constructed. Numerical results are presented to support the theoretical results.
Solving Singularly Perturbed Differential Difference Equations Via Fitted Method, Awoke Andargie, Y. N. Reddy
Solving Singularly Perturbed Differential Difference Equations Via Fitted Method, Awoke Andargie, Y. N. Reddy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we presented a fitted approach to solve singularly perturbed differential difference equations of second order with boundary at one end (left or right) of the interval. In this approach, with the help of Taylor series expansion, we approximated the terms containing negative and positive shifts and modified the singularly perturbed differential difference equation to singularly perturbed differential equation. A fitting parameter in the coefficient of the highest order derivative of the new equation is introduced and determined its value from the theory of singular perturbation. Finally, we obtained a three term recurrence relation which is solved using …
Projected Surface Finite Elements For Elliptic Equations, Necibe Tuncer
Projected Surface Finite Elements For Elliptic Equations, Necibe Tuncer
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we define a new finite element method for numerically approximating solutions of elliptic partial differential equations defined on “arbitrary” smooth surfaces S in RN+1. By “arbitrary” smooth surfaces, we mean surfaces that can be implicitly represented as level sets of smooth functions. The key idea is to first approximate the surface S by a polyhedral surface Sh, which is a union of planar triangles whose vertices lie on S; then to project Sh onto S. With this method, we can also approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of th Laplace-Beltrami operator on these “arbitrary” surfaces.
A New Implementation Of Gmres Using Generalized Purcell Method, Morteza Rahmani, Sayed H. Momeni-Masuleh
A New Implementation Of Gmres Using Generalized Purcell Method, Morteza Rahmani, Sayed H. Momeni-Masuleh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a new method based on the generalized Purcell method is proposed to solve the usual least-squares problem arising in the GMRES method. The theoretical aspects and computational results of the method are provided. For the popular iterative method GMRES, the decomposition matrices of the Hessenberg matrix is obtained by using a simple recursive relation instead of Givens rotations. The other advantages of the proposed method are low computational cost and no need for orthogonal decomposition of the Hessenberg matrix or pivoting. The comparisons for ill-conditioned sparse standard matrices are made. They show a good agreement with available …

Numerical Solution Of Some Nonlinear Volterra Integral Equations Of The First Kind, Leila Saeedi, Abolfazl Tari, Sayyed H. Momeni Masuleh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the solving of a class of the nonlinear Volterra integral equations (NVIE) of the first kind is investigated. Here, we convert NVIE of the first kind to a linear equation of the second kind. Then we apply the operational Tau method to the problem and prove convergence of the presented method. Finally, some numerical examples are given to show the accuracy of the method.

Dispersive Waves In Microstructured Solids, A. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, A. Salupere, K. Tamm, T. Peets, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
The wave motion in micromorphic microstructured solids is studied. The mathematical model is based on ideas of Mindlin and governing equations are derived by making use of the Euler–Lagrange formalism. The same result is obtained by means of the internal variables approach. Actually such a model describes internal fields in microstructured solids under external loading and the interaction of these fields results in various physical effects. The emphasis of the paper is on dispersion analysis and wave profiles generated by initial or boundary conditions in a one-dimensional case.

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
Singular control for multidimensional Gaussian-Poisson processes with a long-run (or ergodic) and a discounted criteria are discussed. The dynamic programming yields the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, which are discussed. Full details on the proofs and further extensions are left for coming works.
Stress Analysis Of Ramberg-Osgood And Hollomon 1-D Axial Rods, Ronald J. Giardina Jr
Stress Analysis Of Ramberg-Osgood And Hollomon 1-D Axial Rods, Ronald J. Giardina Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper we present novel analytic and finite element solutions to 1-D straight rods made of Ramberg-Osgood and Hollomon type materials. These material models are studied because they are a more accurate representation of the material properties of certain metals used often in manufacturing than the simpler composite linear types of stress/strain models. Here, various types of loads are considered and solutions are compared against some linear models. It is shown that the nonlinear models do have manageable solutions, which produce important differences in the results - attributes which suggest that these models should take a more prominent place …
Hardy Space Properties Of The Cauchy Kernel Function For A Strictly Convex Planar Domain, Belen Espinosa Lucio
Hardy Space Properties Of The Cauchy Kernel Function For A Strictly Convex Planar Domain, Belen Espinosa Lucio
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work is based on a paper by Edgar Lee Stout, where it is shown that for every strictly pseudoconvex domain $D$ of class $C^2$ in $\mathbb{C}^N$, the Henkin-Ram\'irez Kernel Function belongs to the Smirnov class, $E^q(D)$, for every $q\in(0,N)$.
The main objective of this dissertation is to show an analogous result for the Cauchy Kernel Function and for any strictly convex bounded domain in the complex plane. Namely, we show that for any strictly convex bounded $D\subset\mathbb{C}$ of class $C^2$ if we fix $\zeta$ in the boundary of $D$ and consider the Cauchy Kernel Function
\mathcal{K}(\zeta,z)=\frac{1}{2\pi i}\frac{1}{\zeta-z}
as a …
Influence Of Microstructure On Thermoelastic Wave Propagation, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski
Influence Of Microstructure On Thermoelastic Wave Propagation, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
Numerical simulations of the thermoelastic response of a microstructured material on a thermal loading are performed in the one-dimensional setting to examine the influence of temperature gradient effects at the microstructure level predicted by the thermoelastic description of microstructured solids (Berezovski et al. in J. Therm. Stress. 34:413–430, 2011). The system of equations consisting of a hyperbolic equation of motion, a parabolic macroscopic heat conduction equation, and a hyperbolic evolution equation for the microtemperature is solved by a finite-volume numerical scheme. Effects of microtemperature gradients exhibit themselves on the macrolevel due to the coupling of equations of the macromotion …

Refining Environmental Satellite Data Using A Statistical Approach, Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Abdelhamid Kadik
Publications and Research
The proposed approach in this article applies an efficient and novel statistical technique to accurately describe radiometric data measured by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES). The corrected data set will then be applied to improve the strength of NOAA Global Vegetation Index (GVI) data set for the 1982- 2003 period produced from AVHRR. The GVI is used extensively for studying and monitoring land surface, atmosphere and recently for analyzing climate and environmental changes. The POES AVHRR data, though useful, cannot be directly used in climate change …

This image is based on several different algorithms interconnected within a single program in the language BASIC-256. The fundamental structure involves a tightly wound spiral working outwards from the center of the image. As the spiral is drawn, different values of red, green and blue are modified through separate but related processes, producing the changing appearance. Algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and analytic geometry are all utilized in overlapping ways within the program. As with many works of algorithmic art, small changes in the program can produce dramatic alterations of the visual output, which makes lots of variations possible.

Sloane’S Gap: Do Mathematical And Social Factors Explain The Distribution Of Numbers In The Oeis?, Nicolas J.-P. Gauvrit, Jean-Paul Delahaye, Hector Zenil
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) is a catalog of integer sequences. We are particularly interested in the number of occurrences of N(n) of an integer n in the database. This number N(n) marks the importance of n and it varies noticeably from one number to another, and from one number to the next in a series. “Importance” can be mathematically objective (2^10 is an example of an “important” number in this sense) or as the result of a shared mathematical culture (10^9 is more important than 9^10 because we use a decimal notation). The concept of algorithmic complexity …

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions I: Efficient Derivations, Nataniel Greene
Generalized Least-Squares Regressions I: Efficient Derivations, Nataniel Greene
Publications and Research
Ordinary least-squares regression suffers from a fundamental lack of symmetry: the regression line of y given x and the regression line of x given y are not inverses of each other. Alternative symmetric regression methods have been developed to address this concern, notably: orthogonal regression and geometric mean regression. This paper presents in detail a variety of least squares regression methods which may not have been known or fully explicated. The derivation of each method is made efficient through the use of Ehrenberg's formula for the ordinary least-squares error and through the extraction of a weight function g(b) which characterizes …
Near-Optimal Compressed Sensing Guarantees For Anisotropic And Isotropic Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
Near-Optimal Compressed Sensing Guarantees For Anisotropic And Isotropic Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Consider the problem of reconstructing a multidimensional signal from partial information, as in the setting of compressed sensing. Without any additional assumptions, this problem is ill-posed. However, for signals such as natural images or movies, the minimal total variation estimate consistent with the measurements often produces a good approximation to the underlying signal, even if the number of measurements is far smaller than the ambient dimensionality. Recently, guarantees for two-dimensional images were established. This paper extends these theoretical results to signals of arbitrary dimension and to both the anisotropic and isotropic total variation problems. To be precise, we show that …

Simulations Of Surfactant Driven Thin Film Flow, Shreyas Kumar
HMC Senior Theses
This thesis is intended to fulfill the requirements of the Math and Physics departments at Harvey Mudd College. We begin with a brief introduction to the study of surfactant dynamics followed by some background on the experimental framework our work is related to. We then go through a derivation of the model we use, and explore in depth the nature of the Equation of State (EoS), the relationship between the surface tension on a fluid and the surfactant concentration. We consider the effect of using an empirical equation of state on the results of the simulations and compare the new …
Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow For Understanding Geyser Phenomena In Urban Stormwater System, Zhiyu S. Shao
Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow For Understanding Geyser Phenomena In Urban Stormwater System, Zhiyu S. Shao
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
During intense rain events a stormwater system can fill rapidly and undergo a transition from open channel flow to pressurized flow. This transition can create large discrete pockets of trapped air in the system. These pockets are pressurized in the horizontal reaches of the system and then are released through vertical vents. In extreme cases, the transition and release of air pockets can create a geyser feature.
The current models are inadequate for simulating mixed flows with complicated air-water interactions, such as geysers. Additionally, the simulation of air escaping in the vertical dropshaft is greatly simplified, or completely ignored, in …
Sampling From The Hardcore Process, William C. Dodds
Sampling From The Hardcore Process, William C. Dodds
CMC Senior Theses
Partially Recursive Acceptance Rejection (PRAR) and bounding chains used in conjunction with coupling from the past (CFTP) are two perfect simulation protocols which can be used to sample from a variety of unnormalized target distributions. This paper first examines and then implements these two protocols to sample from the hardcore gas process. We empirically determine the subset of the hardcore process's parameters for which these two algorithms run in polynomial time. Comparing the efficiency of these two algorithms, we find that PRAR runs much faster for small values of the hardcore process's parameter whereas the bounding chain approach is vastly …
