Simulation Of Nuclear Fusion Using A One Dimensional Particle In Cell Method, Steven T. Margell
Simulation Of Nuclear Fusion Using A One Dimensional Particle In Cell Method, Steven T. Margell
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In this thesis several novel techniques are developed to simulate fusion events in an isotropic, electrostatic three-dimensional Deuterium-Tritium plasma. These techniques allow us to accurately predict three-dimensional collision events with a one-dimensional model while simultaneously reducing compute time via a nearest neighbor algorithm. Furthermore, a fusion model based on first principles is developed that yields an average fusion reactivity which correlates well with empirical results.
Stereographic Visualization Of Bose-Einstein Condensate Clouds To Measure The Gravitational Constant, Ed Wesley Wells
Stereographic Visualization Of Bose-Einstein Condensate Clouds To Measure The Gravitational Constant, Ed Wesley Wells
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis describes a set of tools that can be used for the rapid design of atom interferometer schemes suitable for measuring Newton's Universal Gravitation constant also known as "Big G". This tool set is especially applicable to Bose--Einstein--condensed systems present in NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory experiment to be deployed to the International Space Station in 2017. These tools include a method of approximating the solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger or Gross--Pitaevskii equation (GPE) using the Lagrangian Variational Method. They also include a set of software tools for translating the approximate solutions of the GPE into images of the optical …
A High Accuracy Minimally Invasive Regularization Technique For Navier-Stokes Equations At High Reynolds Number, Mustafa Aggul
A High Accuracy Minimally Invasive Regularization Technique For Navier-Stokes Equations At High Reynolds Number, Mustafa Aggul
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A method is presented, that combines the defect and deferred correction approaches to approximate solutions of Navier-Stokes equations at high Reynolds number. The method is of high accuracy in both space and time, and it allows for the usage of legacy codes (a frequent requirement in the simulation of turbulent flows in complex geometries). The two-step method is considered here; in order to obtain a regularization that is second order accurate in space and time, the method computes a low-order accurate, stable and computationally inexpensive approximation (Backward Euler with artificial viscosity) twice. The results are readily extendable to the higher …
Methodology For Analyzing Epoxy-Cnt Phononic Crystals For Wave Attenuation And Guiding, Madhu Kolati
Methodology For Analyzing Epoxy-Cnt Phononic Crystals For Wave Attenuation And Guiding, Madhu Kolati
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Phononic crystals (PhnCs) control, direct and manipulate sound waves to achieve wave guiding and attenuation. This dissertation presents methodology for analyzing nanotube materials based phononic crystals to achieve control over sound, vibration and stress mitigation. Much of the analytical work presented is in identifying frequency band gaps in which sound or vibration cannot propagate through these PhnCs. Wave attenuation and mitigation analysis is demonstrated using finite element simulation. Engineering principles from current research areas of solid mechanics, solid-state physics, elasto-dynamics, mechanical vibrations and acoustics are employed for the methodology. A considerable effort is put to show that these PhnCs can …
Defect-Deferred Correction Method For The Two-Domain Convection-Dominated Convection-Diffusion Problem, Dilek Erkmen
Defect-Deferred Correction Method For The Two-Domain Convection-Dominated Convection-Diffusion Problem, Dilek Erkmen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We present a method for solving a fluid-fluid interaction problem (two convection-dominated convection-diusion problems adjoined by an interface), which is a simplifed version of the atmosphere ocean coupling problem. The method resolves some of the issues that can be crucial to the fluid-fluid interaction problems: it is a partitioned time stepping method, yet it is of high order accuracy in both space and time (the two-step algorithm considered in this report provides second order accuracy); it allows for the usage of the legacy codes (which is a common requirement when resolving flows in complex geometries), yet it can be applied …

Stability Condition Of A Retrial Queueing System With Abandoned And Feedback Customers, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Abbes Rabhi, Lahcene Yahiaoui
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper deals with the stability of a retrial queueing system with two orbits, abandoned and feedback customers. Two independent Poisson streams of customers arrive to the system, and flow into a single-server service system. An arriving one of type i; i = 1; 2, is handled by the server if it is free; otherwise, it is blocked and routed to a separate type-i retrial (orbit) queue that attempts to re-dispatch its jobs at its specific Poisson rate. The customer in the orbit either attempts service again after a random time or gives up receiving service and leaves the system …

Approximate Solutions For The Flow And Heat Transfer Due To A Stretching Sheet Embedded In A Porous Medium With Variable Thickness, Variable Thermal Conductivity And Thermal Radiation Using Laguerre Collocation Method, M. M. Khader, Ahmed M. Megahed
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, a numerical approach is given for studying the flow of a Newtonian fluid over an impermeable stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium with a power law surface velocity and variable thickness in the presence of thermal radiation. The flow is caused by a non-linear stretching of a sheet. Thermal conductivity of the fluid is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. The governing PDEs are transformed into a system of coupled non-linear ODEs which are using appropriate boundary conditions for various physical parameters. The proposed method is based on replacement of the unknown function by truncated series …
Numerical Solution Of Linear Fredholm Integro-Differential Equations By Non-Standard Finite Difference Method, Pramod K. Pandey
Numerical Solution Of Linear Fredholm Integro-Differential Equations By Non-Standard Finite Difference Method, Pramod K. Pandey
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article we consider a non-standard finite difference method for numerical solution of linear Fredholm integro-differential equations. The non-standard finite difference method and the repeated / composite trapezoidal quadrature method are used to transform the Fredholm integro-differential equation into a system of non-linear algebraic equations. The numerical experiments on some linear model problems show the simplicity and efficiency of the proposed method. It is observed from the numerical experiments that our method is convergent and second order accurate.

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We introduce a method for aggregation of experts’ opinions given in the form of comparative linguistic expression. An algorithmic form of technique for order preference is proposed for group decision making. A simple example is given by using this method for the selection of the best alternative as well as ranking the alternatives from the best to the worst.
Differential Transform Method For Solving The Two-Dimensional Fredholm Integral Equations, F. Ziyaee, A. Tari
Differential Transform Method For Solving The Two-Dimensional Fredholm Integral Equations, F. Ziyaee, A. Tari
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we develop the Differential Transform (DT) method in a new scheme to solve the two-dimensional Fredholm integral equations (2D-FIEs) of the second kind. The differential transform method is a procedure to obtain the coefficients of the Taylor expansion of the solution of differential and integral equations. So, one can obtain the Taylor expansion of the solution of arbitrary order and hence the solution of the given equation can be obtained with required accuracy. Here, we first give some basic definitions and properties about DT from references, and then we prove some theorems to extend the DT method …

Use Of Cubic B-Spline In Approximating Solutions Of Boundary Value Problems, Maria Munguia, Dambaru Bhatta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Here we investigate the use of cubic B-spline functions in solving boundary value problems. First, we derive the linear, quadratic, and cubic B-spline functions. Then we use the cubic B-spline functions to solve second order linear boundary value problems. We consider constant coefficient and variable coefficient cases with non-homogeneous boundary conditions for ordinary differential equations. We also use this numerical method for the space variable to obtain solutions for second order linear partial differential equations. Numerical results for various cases are presented and compared with exact solutions.

Analysis Of Repairable M[X]/(G1,G2)/1 - Feedback Retrial G-Queue With Balking And Starting Failures Under At Most J Vacations, P. Rajadurai, M. C. Saravanarajan, V. M. Chandrasekaran
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we discuss the steady state analysis of a batch arrival feedback retrial queue with two types of service and negative customers. Any arriving batch of positive customers finds the server is free, one of the customers from the batch enters into the service area and the rest of them join into the orbit. The negative customer, arriving during the service time of a positive customer, will remove the positive customer in-service and the interrupted positive customer either enters into the orbit or leaves the system. If the orbit is empty at the service completion of each type …

Congruent Visual Speech Enhances Entrainment To Continuous Auditory Speech In Noise-Free Conditions, Michael Crosse, John S. Butler, Edmumd Lalor
Articles
Congruent audiovisual speech enhances our ability to comprehend a speaker, even in noise-free conditions. When incongruent auditory and visual information is presented concurrently, it can hinder a listener’s perception and even cause him or her to perceive information that was not presented in either modality. Efforts to investigate the neural basis of these effects have often focused on the special case of discrete audiovisual syllables that are spatially and temporally congruent, with less work done on the case of natural, continuous speech. Recent electrophysiological studies have demonstrated that cortical response measures to continuous auditory speech can be easily obtained using …
Pattern Formation Of Elastic Waves And Energy Localization Due To Elastic Gratings, A. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski
Pattern Formation Of Elastic Waves And Energy Localization Due To Elastic Gratings, A. Berezovski, J. Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
Elastic wave propagation through diffraction gratings is studied numerically in the plane strain setting. The interaction of the waves with periodically ordered elastic inclusions leads to a self-imaging Talbot effect for the wavelength equal or close to the grating size. The energy localization is observed at the vicinity of inclusions in the case of elastic gratings. Such a localization is absent in the case of rigid gratings.

Numerical Solutions Of Generalized Burgers' Equations For Some Incompressible Non-Newtonian Fluids, Yupeng Shu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The author presents some generalized Burgers' equations for incompressible and isothermal flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross model, the Carreau model, and the Power-Law model and some simple assumptions on the flows. The author numerically solves the traveling wave equations for the Cross model, the Carreau model, the Power-Law model by using industrial data. The author proves existence and uniqueness of solutions to the traveling wave equations of each of the three models. The author also provides numerical estimates of the shock thickness as well as maximum strain $\varepsilon_{11}$ for each of the fluids.
Global Optimized Isothermal And Nonlinear Models Of Earth’S Standard Atmosphere, Nihad E. Daidzic, Ph.D.,
Global Optimized Isothermal And Nonlinear Models Of Earth’S Standard Atmosphere, Nihad E. Daidzic, Ph.D.,
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Both, a global isothermal temperature model and a nonlinear quadratic temperature model of the ISA was developed and presented here. Constrained optimization techniques in conjunction with the least-square-root approximations were used to design best-fit isothermal models for ISA pressure and density changes up to 47 geopotential km for NLPAM, and 86 orthometric km for ISOAM respectively. The mass of the dry atmosphere and the relevant fractional-mass scale heights have been computed utilizing the very accurate eight-point Gauss-Legendre numerical quadrature for both ISOAM and NLPAM. Both, the ISOAM and the NLPAM represent viable alternatives to ISA in many practical applications and …
On The Selection Of A Good Shape Parameter For Rbf Approximation And Its Application For Solving Pdes, Lei-Hsin Kuo
On The Selection Of A Good Shape Parameter For Rbf Approximation And Its Application For Solving Pdes, Lei-Hsin Kuo
Dissertations
Meshless methods utilizing Radial Basis Functions~(RBFs) are a numerical method that require no mesh connections within the computational domain. They are useful for solving numerous real-world engineering problems. Over the past decades, after the 1970s, several RBFs have been developed and successfully applied to recover unknown functions and to solve Partial Differential Equations (PDEs).
However, some RBFs, such as Multiquadratic (MQ), Gaussian (GA), and Matern functions, contain a free variable, the shape parameter, c. Because c exerts a strong influence on the accuracy of numerical solutions, much effort has been devoted to developing methods for determining shape parameters which provide …
Comparison Of Two Parameter Estimation Techniques For Stochastic Models, Thomas C. Robacker
Comparison Of Two Parameter Estimation Techniques For Stochastic Models, Thomas C. Robacker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parameter estimation techniques have been successfully and extensively applied to deterministic models based on ordinary differential equations but are in early development for stochastic models. In this thesis, we first investigate using parameter estimation techniques for a deterministic model to approximate parameters in a corresponding stochastic model. The basis behind this approach lies in the Kurtz limit theorem which implies that for large populations, the realizations of the stochastic model converge to the deterministic model. We show for two example models that this approach often fails to estimate parameters well when the population size is small. We then develop a …
A Tent Pitching Scheme Motivated By Friedrichs Theory, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Peter Monk, Paulina Sepulveda
A Tent Pitching Scheme Motivated By Friedrichs Theory, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Peter Monk, Paulina Sepulveda
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Certain Friedrichs systems can be posed on Hilbert spaces normed with a graph norm. Functions in such spaces arising from advective problems are found to have traces with a weak continuity property at points where the inflow and outflow boundaries meet. Motivated by this continuity property, an explicit space-time finite element scheme of the tent pitching type, with spaces that conform to the continuity property, is designed. Numerical results for a model one-dimensional wave propagation problem are presented.
Generating Random Vectors Using Transformation With Multiple Roots And Its Applications, Qidi Peng, Henry Schellhorn, Lu Zhu
Generating Random Vectors Using Transformation With Multiple Roots And Its Applications, Qidi Peng, Henry Schellhorn, Lu Zhu
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
An approach is proposed to generate random vectors using transformation with multiple roots. This approach generalizes the one-dimensional inverse transformation with multiple roots method to higher dimensions, i.e., to random vectors with or without densities. In this approach, multiple roots of the transformation and probabilities of selecting each of the roots are derived. The strategies for constructing such a transformation are discussed and several examples are presented to motivate this simulation approach.

A Note On An M/M/S Queueing System With Two Reconnect And Two Redial Orbits, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Hanane Sakhi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A queueing system with two reconnect orbits, two redial (retrial) orbits, s servers and two independent Poisson streams of customers is considered. An arriving customer of type i, i = 1, 2 is handled by an available server, if there is any; otherwise, he waits in an infinite buffer queue. A waiting customer of type i who did not get connected to a server will lose his patience and abandon after an exponentially distributed amount of time, the abandoned one may leave the system (lost customer) or move into one of the redial orbits, from which he makes a new …

Optimal Solution Of A Fully Fuzzy Linear Fractional Programming Problem By Using Graded Mean Integration Representation Method, Moumita Deb, P. K. De
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the present paper, the study of fully fuzzy linear fractional programming problem (FFLFPP) using graded mean integration representation method is discussed where all the parameters and variables are characterized by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. A computational algorithm has been presented to obtain an optimal solution by applying simplex method. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach, one numerical example is solved. Also to check the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed approach, we compare the results of examples by applying crisp numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers.
Optimal Error Estimate Of Upwind Scheme On Adaptive Grid For Two Parameter Singular Perturbation Problem, J. Mohapatra, M. K. Mahalik
Optimal Error Estimate Of Upwind Scheme On Adaptive Grid For Two Parameter Singular Perturbation Problem, J. Mohapatra, M. K. Mahalik
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem with two small parameters is considered. The problem is solved by an upwind finite difference operator on an appropriate non-uniform mesh constructed adaptively by equi-distributing a monitor function based on the solution. An error bound in the maximum norm is established theoretically with the error constants shown to be independent of both singular perturbation parameters. The normalized flux obtained via interpolating the polynomial from the numerical solution is also uniformly convergent. A numerical experiment illustrates in practice the result of convergence proved theoretically.

On Some Optimal Multiple Root-Finding Methods And Their Dynamics, Munish Kansal, V. Kanwar, Saurabh Bhatia
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Finding multiple zeros of nonlinear functions pose many difficulties for many of the iterative methods. In this paper, we present an improved optimal class of higher-order methods for multiple roots having quartic convergence. The present approach of deriving an optimal class is based on weight function approach. In terms of computational cost, all the proposed methods require three functional evaluations per full iteration, so that their efficiency indices are 1.587 and, are optimal in the sense of Kung-Traub conjecture. It is found by way of illustrations that they are useful in high precision computing enviroments. Moreover, basins of attraction of …

Implicit-Explicit Higher-Order Time Integration Schemes For Computations Of Structural Dynamics With Fluid-Structure Interaction, José C. Pedro, Mapundi K. Banda, Precious Sibanda
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper higher order implicit Runge-Kutta schemes are applied to fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulations. A staggered approach with a structural predictor is applied to an FSI problem. The equations governing the dynamics of the structure are integrated in time by the Explicit Single Diagonal Implicit Runge-Kutta (ESDIRK) schemes and the arbitrary high order finite volume scheme is taken as the fluid solver. The performance of the ESDIRK scheme of order of convergence three to five is tested. Comparative studies with other time integration schemes which have been successfully applied to FSI problems are undertaken. Comparisons to test the performance …

A Super Non-Dominated Point For Multi-Objective Transportation Problem, Abbas S. Bander, Vahid Morovati, Hadi Basirzadeh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper a method to obtain a non-dominated point for the multi-objective transportation problem is presented. The superiority of this method over the other existing methods is that the presented non-dominated point is the closest solution to the ideal solution of that problem. The presented method does not need to have the ideal point and other parameters to find this solution. Also, the calculative load of this method is less than other methods in the literature.
