High-Order Relaxed Multirate Infinitesimal Step Methods For Multiphysics Applications, Jean Sexton
High-Order Relaxed Multirate Infinitesimal Step Methods For Multiphysics Applications, Jean Sexton
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
In this work, we consider numerical methods for integrating multirate ordinary differential equations. We are interested in the development of new multirate methods with good stability properties and improved efficiency over existing methods. We discuss the development of multirate methods, particularly focusing on those that are based on Runge-Kutta theory. We introduce the theory of Generalized Additive Runge-Kutta methods proposed by Sandu and Günther. We also introduce the theory of Recursive Flux Splitting Multirate Methods with Sub-cycling described by Schlegel, as well as the Multirate Infinitesimal Step methods this work is based on. We propose a generic structure called Flexible …
Filtered Subspace Iteration For Selfadjoint Operators, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Luka Grubišić, Jeffrey S. Ovall
Filtered Subspace Iteration For Selfadjoint Operators, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Luka Grubišić, Jeffrey S. Ovall
Portland Institute for Computational Science Publications
We consider the problem of computing a cluster of eigenvalues (and its associated eigenspace) of a (possibly unbounded) selfadjoint operator in a Hilbert space. A rational function of the operator is constructed such that the eigenspace of interest is its dominant eigenspace, and a subspace iteration procedure is used to approximate this eigenspace. The computed space is then used to obtain approximations of the eigenvalues of interest. An eigenvalue and eigenspace convergence analysis that considers both iteration error and dis- cretization error is provided. A realization of the proposed approach for a model second-order elliptic operator is based on a …
Convergence Of Media Attention Across 129 Countries, Jisun An, Hassan Aldarbesti, Haewoon Kwak
Convergence Of Media Attention Across 129 Countries, Jisun An, Hassan Aldarbesti, Haewoon Kwak
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The objective of this study is to assess the longitudinal trends of media similarity and dissimilarity on the international scale. As news value has well-established political, cultural, and economic consequences, the degree to which media coverage and content is converging across countries has implications for international relations. To study this convergence, we use the daily data of the 100 topics that were over-reported in each country, compared to other countries, from March 7 to October 9, 2016. The results of this analysis indicate that two complementary patterns–globalization and domestication–explain the media attention across the countries. We conclude that this attention …
Information Theoretic Study Of Gaussian Graphical Models And Their Applications, Ali Moharrer
Information Theoretic Study Of Gaussian Graphical Models And Their Applications, Ali Moharrer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In many problems we are dealing with characterizing a behavior of a complex stochastic system or its response to a set of particular inputs. Such problems span over several topics such as machine learning, complex networks, e.g., social or communication networks; biology, etc. Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) are powerful tools that offer a compact modeling of complex systems. They are designed to capture the random behavior, i.e., the joint distribution of the system to the best possible accuracy. Our goal is to study certain algebraic and topological properties of a special class of graphical models, known as Gaussian graphs. First, …
On The Ramberg-Osgood Stress-Strain Model And Large Deformations Of Cantilever Beams, Ronald J. Giardina Jr
On The Ramberg-Osgood Stress-Strain Model And Large Deformations Of Cantilever Beams, Ronald J. Giardina Jr
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis the Ramberg-Osgood nonlinear model for describing the behavior of many different materials is investigated. A brief overview of the model as it is currently used in the literature is undertaken and several misunderstandings and possible pitfalls in its application is pointed out, especially as it pertains to more recent approaches to finding solutions involving the model. There is an investigation of the displacement of a cantilever beam under a combined loading consisting of a distributed load across the entire length of the beam and a point load at its end and new solutions to this problem are …
Joint Inversion Of Compact Operators, James Ford
Joint Inversion Of Compact Operators, James Ford
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The first mention of joint inversion came in [22], where the authors used the singular value decomposition to determine the degree of ill-conditioning in inverse problems. The authors demonstrated in several examples that combining two models in a joint inversion, and effectively stacking discrete linear models, improved the conditioning of the problem. This thesis extends the notion of using the singular value decomposition to determine the conditioning of discrete joint inversion to using the singular value expansion to determine the well-posedness of joint linear operators. We focus on compact linear operators related to geophysical, electromagnetic subsurface imaging.
The operators are …
Eignefunctions For Partial Differential Equations On Two-Dimensional Domains With Piecewise Constant Coefficients, Abdullah Muheel Momit Aurko
Eignefunctions For Partial Differential Equations On Two-Dimensional Domains With Piecewise Constant Coefficients, Abdullah Muheel Momit Aurko
Master's Theses
In this thesis, we develop a highly accurate and efficient algorithm for computing the solution of a partial differential equation defined on a two-dimensional domain with discontinuous coefficients. An example of such a problem is for modeling the diffusion of heat energy in two space dimensions, in the case where the spatial domain represents a medium consisting of two different but homogeneous materials, with periodic boundary conditions.
Since diffusivity changes based on the material, it will be represented using a piecewise constant function, and this results in the formation of a complicated mathematical model. Such a model is impossible to …

Some Problems Arising From Mathematical Model Of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ., Heng Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the earliest form of breast cancer. Three mathematical models in the one dimensional case arising from DCIS are proposed. The first two models are in the form of parabolic equation with initial and known moving boundaries. Direct and inverse problems are considered in model 1, existence and uniqueness are proved by using tool from heat potential theory and Volterra integral equations. Also, we discuss the direct problem and nonlocal problem of model 2, existence and uniqueness are proved. And approximation solution of these problems are implemented by Ritz-Galerkin method, which is the first attempt …
Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations Using Polynomial Particular Solutions, Thir R. Dangal
Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations Using Polynomial Particular Solutions, Thir R. Dangal
Dissertations
Polynomial particular solutions have been obtained for certain types of partial differential operators without convection terms. In this dissertation, a closed-form particular solution for more general partial differential operators with constant coefficients has been derived for polynomial basis functions. The newly derived particular solutions are further coupled with the method of particular solutions (MPS) for numerically solving a large class of elliptic partial differential equations. In contrast to the use of Chebyshev polynomial basis functions, the proposed approach is more flexible in selecting the collocation points inside the domain. Polynomial basis functions are well-known for yielding ill-conditioned systems when their …
Large-Scale Online Feature Selection For Ultra-High Dimensional Sparse Data, Yue Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tao Mei, Nenghai Yu
Large-Scale Online Feature Selection For Ultra-High Dimensional Sparse Data, Yue Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tao Mei, Nenghai Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Feature selection (FS) is an important technique in machine learning and data mining, especially for large scale high-dimensional data. Most existing studies have been restricted to batch learning, which is often inefficient and poorly scalable when handling big data in real world. As real data may arrive sequentially and continuously, batch learning has to retrain the model for the new coming data, which is very computationally intensive. Online feature selection (OFS) is a promising new paradigm that is more efficient and scalable than batch learning algorithms. However, existing online algorithms usually fall short in their inferior efficacy. In this article, …
Evaluation And Enhancement Of Clean Energy Systems: Analytical, Computational And Experimental Study Of Solar And Nuclear Cycles, Nima Fathi
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Clean (and specifically renewable) energy is steadily improving its global share. However, finite availability of fossil fuels and the growing effects of climate change make it an urgent priority to convince the industry and governments to incentivize investment in the renewable energy field and to make it more attractive by decreasing the capital cost. Until recently, uncertainties in funding limited renewable energy development, especially in the US. That limitation has been one of the barriers to progress. Another limitation of many renewable energy systems is the variability in their output, which makes them unsuitable for baseline power production. Therefore, fossil …
An Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Parallel Analysis For Determining The Number Of Factors In A Factor Analysis, Mandy Matsumoto
An Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Parallel Analysis For Determining The Number Of Factors In A Factor Analysis, Mandy Matsumoto
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Exploratory factor analysis is an analytic technique used to determine the number of factors in a set of data (usually items on a questionnaire) for which the factor structure has not been previously analyzed. Parallel analysis (PA) is a technique used to determine the number of factors in a factor analysis. There are a number of factors that affect the results of a PA: the choice of the eigenvalue percentile, the strength of the factor loadings, the number of variables, and the sample size of the study. Although PA is the most accurate method to date to determine which factors …

Basic Science Engineering
The algebraic structure of the linear system appears in solving fractional order Poisson’s equation by Haar wavelet collocation approach is considered. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. Comparison with the classical integer case as a limiting process is illustrated. Numerical comparison is made between the solution using the Haar wavelet method and the finite difference method. The results confirms the accuracy for the Haar wavelet method.

Inverse Problem For A Parabolic System, Reza Pourgholi, Amin Esfahani, Hassan D. Mazraeh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper a numerical approach combining the least squares method and a genetic algorithm is proposed for the determination of the source term in an inverse parabolic system (IPS). A numerical experiment confirm the utility of this algorithm as the results are in good agreement with the exact data. Results show that a reasonable estimation can be obtained by the genetic algorithm within a CPU with clock speed 2.7 GHz.

Damping In Microscale Modified Couple Stress Thermoelastic Circular Kirchhoff Plate Resonators, Rajneesh Kumar, Shaloo Devi, Veena Sharma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The vibrations of circular plate in modified couple stress thermoelastic medium using Kirchhoff- Love plate theory has been presented. The basic equations of motion and heat conduction equation for Lord Shulman (L-S, 1967) theory are written with the help of Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. The thermoelastic damping of micro beam resonators is studied by applying normal mode analysis method. The solutions for the free vibrations of plates under clamped, simply supported and free boundary conditions are obtained. The analytical expressions for thermoelastic damping of vibration and frequency shift are obtained for generalized couple stress thermoelastic and coupled thermoelastic plates. Numerical results …

Generalized Statistical Summability Of Double Sequences And Korovkin Type Approximation Theorem, M. Mursaleen
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we introduce the notion of statistical (λ, μ)-summability and find its relation with (λ, μ)-statistical convergence. We apply this new method to prove a Korovkin type approximation theorem for functions of two variables. Furthermore, we provide an example in support to show that our result is stronger than the previous ones.

Effect Of Damping And Thermal Gradient On Vibrations Of Orthotropic Rectangular Plate Of Variable Thickness, U. S. Rana, Robin Robin
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this present paper, damped vibrations of an orthotropic rectangular plate resting on elastic foundation with thermal gradient is modeled, considering variable thickness of plate. Following Le`vy approach, the governed equation of motion is solved numerically using quintic spline technique with clamped and simply supported edges. The effect of damping parameter and thermal gradient together with taper constant, density parameter and elastic foundation parameter on the natural frequencies of vibration for the first three modes of vibration are depicted through Tables and Figures, and mode shapes have been computed for fixed value of plate parameter. It has been observed that …
Application Of Taylor-Pade Technique For Obtaining Approximate Solution For System Of Linear Fredholm Integro-Dierential Equations, M. M. Khader
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we introduce a modification of the Taylor matrix method using Pad´e approximation to obtain an accurate solution of linear system of Fredholm integro-differential equations (FIDEs). This modification is based on, first, taking truncated Taylor series of the functions and then substituting their matrix forms into the given equations. Thereby the equation reduces to a matrix equation, which corresponds to a system of linear algebraic equations with unknown Taylor coefficients. Finally, we use Pad´e approximation to obtain an accurate numerical solution of the proposed problem. To demonstrate the validity and the applicability of the proposed method, we present …
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Elliptic Pde's By The Collocation Method, Fuat Usta
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Elliptic Pde's By The Collocation Method, Fuat Usta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this presentation a numerical solution for the solution of fractional order of elliptic partial differential equation in R2 is proposed. In this method we use the Radial basis functions (RBFs) method to benefit the desired properties of mesh free techniques such as no need to generate any mesh and easily applied to multi dimensions. In the numerical solution approach the RBF collocation method is used to discrete fractional derivative terms with the Gaussian basis function. Two dimensional numerical examples are presented and discussed, which conform well with the corresponding exact solutions.

A Simple Linear Time Algorithm For Computing A 1-Median On Cactus Graphs, Kien T. Nguyen, Pham V. Chien, Ly H. Hai, Huynh D. Quoc
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We address the problem of finding a 1-median on a cactus graph. The problem has already been solved in linear time by the algorithms of Burkard and Krarup (1998), and Lan and Wang (2000). These algorithms are complicated and need efforts. Hence, we develop in this paper a simpler algorithm. First, we construct a condition for a cycle that contains a 1-median or for a vertex that is indeed a 1-median of the cactus. Based on this condition, we localize the search for deriving a 1-median on the underlying cactus. Complexity analysis shows that the approach runs in linear time.

In this paper, we present a numerical method for solving fractional integro-differential equations with nonlocal boundary conditions using Bernstein polynomials. Some theoretical considerations regarding fractional order derivatives of Bernstein polynomials are discussed. The error analysis is carried out and supported with some numerical examples. It is shown that the method is simple and accurate for the given problem.

Numerical Study Of Soliton Solutions Of Kdv, Boussinesq, And Kaup-Kuperschmidt Equations Based On Jacobi Polynomials, Khadijeh Sadri, Hamideh Ebrahimi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a numerical method is developed to approximate the soliton solutions of some nonlinear wave equations in terms of the Jacobi polynomials. Wave are very important phenomena in dispersion, dissipation, diffusion, reaction, and convection. Using the wave variable converts these nonlinear equations to the nonlinear ODE equations. Then, the operational Collocation method based on Jacobi polynomials as bases is applied to approximate the solution of ODE equation resulted. In addition, the intervals of the solution will be extended using an rational exponential approximation (REA). The KdV, Boussinesq, and Kaup–Kuperschmidt equations are studied as the test examples. Finally, numerical …

Finite Difference Schemes For Variable Order Time-Fractional First Initial Boundary Value Problems, Gunvant A. Birajdar, M. M. Rashidi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The aim of the study is to obtain the numerical solution of first initial boundary value problem (IBVP) for semi-linear variable order fractional diffusion equation by using different finite difference schemes. We developed the three finite difference schemes namely explicit difference scheme, implicit difference scheme and Crank-Nicolson difference scheme, respectively for variable order type semi-linear diffusion equation. For this scheme the stability as well as convergence are studied via Fourier method. At the end, solution of some numerical examples are discussed and represented graphically using Matlab.

Fast Algorithms On Random Matrices And Structured Matrices, Liang Zhao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Randomization of matrix computations has become a hot research area in the big data era. Sampling with randomly generated matrices has enabled fast algorithms to perform well for some most fundamental problems of numerical algebra with probability close to 1. The dissertation develops a set of algorithms with random and structured matrices for the following applications: 1) We prove that using random sparse and structured sampling enables rank-r approximation of the average input matrix having numerical rank r. 2) We prove that Gaussian elimination with no pivoting (GENP) is numerically safe for the average nonsingular and well-conditioned matrix preprocessed with …

Revisiting Assert Use In Github Projects, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Assertions are often used to test the assumptions that developers have about a program. An assertion contains a boolean expression which developers believe to be true at a particular program point. It throws an error if the expression is not satisfied, which helps developers to detect and correct bugs. Since assertions make developer assumptions explicit, assertions are also believed to improve under-standability of code. Recently, Casalnuovo et al. analyse C and C++ programs to understand the relationship between assertion usage and defect occurrence. Their results show that asserts have a small effect on reducing the density of bugs and developers …

Building And Validating A Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Isolated Water Molecules, Grant Cates
Building And Validating A Model For Investigating The Dynamics Of Isolated Water Molecules, Grant Cates
Senior Theses
Understanding how water molecules behave in isolation is vital to understand many fundamental processes in nature. To that end, scientists have begun studying crystals in which single water molecules become trapped in regularly occurring cavities in the crystal structure. As part of that investigation, numerical models used to investigate the dynamics of isolated water molecules are sought to help bolster our fundamental understanding of how these systems behave. To that end, the efficacy of three computational methods—the Euler Method, the Euler-Aspel Method and the Beeman Method—is compared using a newly defined parameter, called the predictive stability coefficient ρ. This …
Electrodynamical Modeling For Light Transport Simulation, Michael G. Saunders
Electrodynamical Modeling For Light Transport Simulation, Michael G. Saunders
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Modernity in the computer graphics community is characterized by a burgeoning interest in physically based rendering techniques. That is to say that mathematical reasoning from first principles is widely preferred to ad hoc, approximate reasoning in blind pursuit of photorealism. Thereby, the purpose of our research is to investigate the efficacy of explicit electrodynamical modeling by means of the generalized Jones vector given by Azzam [1] and the generalized Jones matrix given by Ortega-Quijano & Arce-Diego [2] in the context of stochastic light transport simulation for computer graphics. To augment the status quo path tracing framework with such a modeling …
