Derivation Of Direct Explicit Integrators Of Rk Type For Solving Class Of Seventh-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Mohammed S. Mechee, Jawad K. Mshachal
Derivation Of Direct Explicit Integrators Of Rk Type For Solving Class Of Seventh-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Mohammed S. Mechee, Jawad K. Mshachal
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The main contribution of this work is the development of direct explicit methods of Runge-Kutta (RK) type for solving class of seventh-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to improve computational efficiency. For this purpose, we have generalized RK, RKN, RKD, RKT, RKFD and RKM methods for solving class of first-, second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-order ODEs. Using Taylor expansion approach, we have derived the algebraic equations of the order conditions for the proposed RKM integrators up to the tenth-order. Based on these order conditions, two RKM methods of fifth- and sixth-order with four- and five-stage are derived. The zero stability of …
Academic Skill Learning And The Problem Of Complexity I: Creational Purposeful Integrated Capability At Skill (Cpics), Martin F. Gardiner
Academic Skill Learning And The Problem Of Complexity I: Creational Purposeful Integrated Capability At Skill (Cpics), Martin F. Gardiner
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Physical and mental skills are intended to achieve success at acting purposefully. As capability at any skill increases, the need to adjust details of application to complexity of context and goals will increase as well. It will become more and more important to prepare mentally for what I now term Creational Purposeful Integrated Capability at Skill (CPICS). This paper develops what I mean by CPICS. Theory concerning Complex Dynamical Systems (CDS) such as the brain and other evidence points to the likelihood that the mental operations by which our brain produces any kind of skillful behavior cannot remain constant, …
Being In Uncertainties: An Inquiry-Based Model Leveraging Complexity In Teaching-Learning, Diane Rosen
Being In Uncertainties: An Inquiry-Based Model Leveraging Complexity In Teaching-Learning, Diane Rosen
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Education is traditionally structured as a closed system, privileging result-driven methods that offer control and predictability. In recent decades this reductionist approach has been effectively challenged by interdisciplinary work in complex systems theory, revealing myriad levels of orderly disorder that make either-or, linear instruction an inadequate norm. Narrowing the broad implications of a complexity lens on education, this paper focuses on generative uncertainty in teaching-learning, a paradoxical state of epistemological and creative growth described by English poet John Keats as "the negative capability of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts." Opportunities to advance this potentiating capacity are especially abundant in constructivist …
Creativity As An Emergent Property Of Complex Educational System, Ceire Monahan, Mika Munakata, Ashwin Vaidya
Creativity As An Emergent Property Of Complex Educational System, Ceire Monahan, Mika Munakata, Ashwin Vaidya
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
The importance of creativity in education has been discussed often in the literature. While there remains no agreed-upon definition of creativity, the psychological literature points to traits of a creative person. These include the ability to think outside the box, make connections between seemingly disparate ideas, and question norms. The literature provides several examples of classroom experiments to help foster creativity in the classroom. In science and mathematics, we can start by getting students to recognize mathematics and the sciences as being creative endeavors. While these attempts are noteworthy, they are not necessarily aligned with instructional practices. In this article, …
Rethinking Educational Reforms Through A Complex Dynamical Systems Approach: Preliminary Report From An Empirical Research, Eugenia Tsiouplis, Dimitrios Stamovlasis
Rethinking Educational Reforms Through A Complex Dynamical Systems Approach: Preliminary Report From An Empirical Research, Eugenia Tsiouplis, Dimitrios Stamovlasis
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Literature on educational reforms is rich of cases where changes have been attempted, without however to attain success. Likewise the Greek education system had experienced a lot of reforms, most of which have failed to make the intended changes and they attenuated shortly after their implementation or they ceased at the stage of legislative planning. On the other hand, the traditional research have failed to develop a coherent theoretical perspective and provide satisfactory interpretations of the perpetually unsuccessful reforms. This paper is part of wider project which attempts to address the above issue following the Complex Dynamical Systems (CDS) perspective, …

Fractality And Power Law Distributions: Shifting Perspectives In Educational Research, Matthijs Koopmans
Fractality And Power Law Distributions: Shifting Perspectives In Educational Research, Matthijs Koopmans
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
The dynamical character of education and the complexity of its constituent relationships have long been recognized, but the full appreciation of the implications of these insights for educational research is recent. Most educational research to this day tends to focus on outcomes rather than process, and rely on conventional cross-sectional designs and statistical inference methods that do not capture this complexity. This presentation focuses on two related aspects not well accommodated by conventional models, namely fractality (self-similarity, scale invariance) and power law distributions (an inverse relationship between frequency of occurrence and strength of response). Examples are presented for both phenomena …
Forecasting Localized Weather-Based Photovoltaic Energy Production, Kevin Chang, Afreen Siddiqui, Robert Slater
Forecasting Localized Weather-Based Photovoltaic Energy Production, Kevin Chang, Afreen Siddiqui, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
Photovoltaic (PV) power system performance can vary from nominal specifications when put in application, making it difficult to accurately estimate real power generation at a localized level. As the usage and efficiency of PV systems has increased in recent years, the amount of power contributed to the national power grid from solar irradiation has also increased significantly. However, solar power installations are subject to variances in efficiency and output, driven by differences in system size, local weather, and atmospheric condition changes. With a significant install base in today's world, combined with extensive solar irradiance and meteorological data, the variables exist …
Parallel Multipole Expansion Algorithms And Their Biology Applications, Jiahui Chen
Parallel Multipole Expansion Algorithms And Their Biology Applications, Jiahui Chen
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
N-body pairwise interactions are ubiquitous in scientific areas such as astrophysics, fluids mechanics, electrical engineering, molecular biology, etc. Computing these interactions using direct sum of an O(N) cost is expensive, whereas multipole expansion methods, such as the fast multipole method (FMM) or treecode, can reduce the cost to O(N) or O(N log N). This thesis focuses on developing numerical algorithms of Cartesian FMM and treecode, as well as using these algorithms to directly or implicitly solve biological problems involving pairwise interactions. This thesis consists of the following topics. 1) A cyclic parallel scheme is developed to handle the load balancing …

Finally, this paper presents ways to teach and assess CT.
Exploring Delay Dispersal In Us Airport Network, Brandon Sripimonwan, Arun Sathanur
Exploring Delay Dispersal In Us Airport Network, Brandon Sripimonwan, Arun Sathanur
STAR Program Research Presentations
The modeling of delay diffusion in airport networks can potentially help develop strategies to prevent the spread of such delays and disruptions. With this goal, we used the publicly-available historical United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) flight data to model the spread of delays in the US airport network. For the major (ASPM-77) airports for January 2017, using a threshold on the volume of flights, we sparsify the network in order to better recognize patterns and cluster structure of the network. We developed a diffusion simulator and greedy optimizer to find the top influential airport nodes that propagate the most …
Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods With Non-Homogenous Boundary Conditions, Abbie Hendley
Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods With Non-Homogenous Boundary Conditions, Abbie Hendley
Master's Theses
For this thesis, Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) methods, developed by Dr. James Lambers, will be used to solve a one-dimensional, heat equation with non-homogenous boundary conditions. While current methods such as Finite Difference are able to carry out these computations efficiently, their accuracy and scalability can be improved. We will solve the heat equation in one-dimension with two cases to observe the behaviors of the errors using KSS methods. The first case will implement KSS methods with trigonometric initial conditions, then another case where the initial conditions are polynomial functions. We will also look at both the time-independent and time-dependent …
One-Note-Samba Approach To Cosmology, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
One-Note-Samba Approach To Cosmology, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Inspired by One Note Samba, a standard jazz repertoire, we present an outline of Bose-Einstein Condensate Cosmology. Although this approach seems awkward and a bit off the wall at first glance, it is not impossible to connect altogether BEC, Scalar Field Cosmology and Feshbach Resonance with Ermakov-Pinney equation. We also briefly discuss possible link with our previous paper which describes Newtonian Universe with Vortex in terms of Ermakov equation.
Radial Basis Function Finite Difference Approximations Of The Laplace-Beltrami Operator, Sage Byron Shaw
Radial Basis Function Finite Difference Approximations Of The Laplace-Beltrami Operator, Sage Byron Shaw
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used throughout science and engineering for modeling various phenomena. Solutions to PDEs cannot generally be represented analytically, and therefore must be approximated using numerical techniques; this is especially true for geometrically complex domains. Radial basis function generated finite differences (RBF-FD) is a recently developed mesh-free method for numerically solving PDEs that is robust, accurate, computationally efficient, and geometrically flexible. In the past seven years, RBF-FD methods have been developed for solving PDEs on surfaces, which have applications in biology, chemistry, geophysics, and computer graphics. These methods are advantageous, as they are mesh-free, operate on arbitrary …
Trefftz Finite Elements On Curvilinear Polygons, Akash Anand, Jeffrey S. Ovall, Samuel E. Reynolds, Steffen Weisser
Trefftz Finite Elements On Curvilinear Polygons, Akash Anand, Jeffrey S. Ovall, Samuel E. Reynolds, Steffen Weisser
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a Trefftz-type finite element method on meshes consisting of curvilinear polygons. Local basis functions are computed using integral equation techniques that allow for the efficient and accurate evaluation of quantities needed in the formation of local stiffness matrices. To define our local finite element spaces in the presence of curved edges, we must also properly define what it means for a function defined on a curved edge to be "polynomial" of a given degree on that edge. We consider two natural choices, before settling on the one that yields the inclusion of complete polynomial spaces in our local …

Claus O. Wilke has authored an excellent reference about producing and understanding static figures, figures used online, in print, and for presentations. His book is neither a statistics nor programming text, but familiarity with basic statistical concepts is helpful. Written in three parts, the book presents both the math and artistic design aspects of telling a story through figures. Wilke makes extensive use of examples, labels them good, bad, …
Runge–Kutta–Gegenbauer Explicit Methods For Advection-Diffusion Problems, Stephen O'Sullivan
Runge–Kutta–Gegenbauer Explicit Methods For Advection-Diffusion Problems, Stephen O'Sullivan
Articles
In this paper, Runge-Kutta-Gegenbauer (RKG) stability polynomials of arbitrarily high order of accuracy are introduced in closed form. The stability domain of RKG polynomials extends in the the real direction with the square of polynomial degree, and in the imaginary direction as an increasing function of Gegenbauer parameter. Consequently, the polynomials are naturally suited to the construction of high order stabilized Runge-Kutta (SRK) explicit methods for systems of PDEs of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type.
We present SRK methods composed of L ordered forward Euler stages, with complex-valued stepsizes derived from the roots of RKG stability polynomials of degree $L$. Internal stability …

Meshless Modeling Of Flow Dispersion And Progressive Piping In Poroelastic Levees, Anthony Khoury, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab, Sai Kakuturu, Lakshmi Reddi
Publications
Performance data on earth dams and levees continue to indicate that piping is one of the major causes of failure. Current criteria for prevention of piping in earth dams and levees have remained largely empirical. This paper aims at developing a mechanistic understanding of the conditions necessary to prevent piping and to enhance the likelihood of self-healing of cracks in levees subjected to hydrodynamic loading from astronomical and meteorological (including hurricane storm surge-induced) forces. Systematic experimental investigations are performed to evaluate erosion in finite-length cracks as a result of transient hydrodynamic loading. Here, a novel application of the localized collocation …

Performance And Economic Evaluation Of Differentiated Multiple Vacation Queueing System With Feedback And Balked Customers, Amina A. Bouchentouf, Latifa Medjahri
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with a single server feedback queueing system under two differentiated multiple vacations and balked customers. It is assumed that the service times of the two vacation types are exponentially distributed with different means. The steady-state probabilities of the model are obtained. Some important performance measures of the system are derived. Then, a cost model is developed. Further, a numerical study is presented.

Exact Reliability For Consecutive K-Out-Of-R-From-N: F System With Equal And Unequal Components Probabilities, Yaser Amirian, Ahmad Khodadadi, Omid Chatrabgoun
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A consecutive k-out-of-r-from-n: F system consists of n linear ordered components such that the system fails if and only if there exist a set of r consecutive linear component that contains at least k failed components. Consecutive k-out-of-r-from-n: F system has been considered in many fields such as reliability analysis. All recent efforts in this area have been focused on acquiring band or approximation for their reliability such that less attention has been paid to their closed form and exact reliability in the literature. In the present paper, with designing an innovative algorithm the exact reliability for extensive class of …

Transient Analysis Of A Markovian Single Vacation Feedback Queue With An Interrupted Closedown Time And Control Of Admission During Vacation, A. Azhagappan, T. Deepa
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper analyzes the transient behavior of an M/M/1 queueing model with single vacation, feedback, interrupted closedown time and control of admission during vacation. The time-dependent system size probabilities for the proposed model are obtained using generating function in the closed form. Further, the system performance measures like mean and variance of system size are also obtained for the time-dependent case. Finally, numerical illustrations are presented to understand the effect for various system parameters.
An Initial Value Technique Using Exponentially Fitted Non Standard Finite Difference Method For Singularly Perturbed Differential-Difference Equations, M. Adilaxmi, D. Bhargavi, Y. N. Reddy
An Initial Value Technique Using Exponentially Fitted Non Standard Finite Difference Method For Singularly Perturbed Differential-Difference Equations, M. Adilaxmi, D. Bhargavi, Y. N. Reddy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an exponentially fitted non standard finite difference method is proposed to solve singularly perturbed differential-difference equations with boundary layer on left and right sides of the interval. In this method, the original second order differential difference equation is replaced by an asymptotically equivalent singularly perturbed problem and in turn the problem is replaced by an asymptotically equivalent first order problem. This initial value problem is solve by using exponential fitting with non standard finite differences. To validate the applicability of the method, several model examples have been solved by taking different values for the delay parameter δ …
Modified Gaussian Radial Basis Function Method For The Burgers Systems, Hossein Aminikhah, Mostafa Sadeghi
Modified Gaussian Radial Basis Function Method For The Burgers Systems, Hossein Aminikhah, Mostafa Sadeghi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the systems of variable-coefficient coupled Burgers equation are solved by a free mesh method. The method is based on the collocation points with the modified Gaussian (MGA) radial basis function (RBF). Dependent parameters and independent parameters and their effect on the stability are shown. The accuracy and efficiency of the method has been checked by two examples. The results of numerical experiments are compared with analytical solutions by calculating errors infinity-norm.

Generalized Differential Transform Method For Solving Some Fractional Integro-Differential Equations, S. Shahmorad, A. A. Khajehnasiri
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we use a generalized form of two-dimensional Differential Transform (2D-DT) to solve a new class of fractional integro-differential equations. We express some useful properties of the new transform as a proposition and prove a convergence theorem. Then we illustrate the method with numerical examples.
