Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren

For certain nonlinear Schroedinger equations there exist solutions which are called solitary waves. Addition of a potential $V$ changes the dynamics, but for small enough $||V||_{L^\infty}$ we can still obtain stability (and approximately Newtonian motion of the solitary wave's center of mass) for soliton-like solutions up to a finite time that depends on the size and scale of the potential $V$. Our method is an adaptation of the well-known Lyapunov method.

For the sake of completeness, we also prove long-time stability of traveling solitons in the case $V=0$.

Wildfires are becoming increasingly erratic nowadays at least in part because of climate change. CFD (computational fluid dynamics)-based models with the potential of simulating extreme behaviors are gaining increasing attention as a means to predict such behavior in order to aid firefighting efforts. This dissertation describes a wildfire model based on the current understanding of wildfire physics. The model includes physics of turbulence, inhomogeneous porous fuel beds, heat release, ignition, and firebrands. A discrete dynamical system for flow in porous media is derived and incorporated into the subgrid-scale model for synthetic-velocity large-eddy simulation (LES), and a general porosity-permeability model is …

Autonomous Quadrotor Collision Avoidance And Destination Seeking In A Gps-Denied Environment, Thomas C. Kirven

This thesis presents a real-time autonomous guidance and control method for a quadrotor in a GPS-denied environment. The quadrotor autonomously seeks a destination while it avoids obstacles whose shape and position are initially unknown. We implement the obstacle avoidance and destination seeking methods using off-the-shelf sensors, including a vision-sensing camera. The vision-sensing camera detects the positions of points on the surface of obstacles. We use this obstacle position data and a potential-field method to generate velocity commands. We present a backstepping controller that uses the velocity commands to generate the quadrotor's control inputs. In indoor experiments, we demonstrate that the …

A reaction-diffusion model and a lattice differential equation are introduced to describe the persistence and spread of a species along a shifting habitat gradient. The species is assumed to grow everywhere in space and its growth rate is assumed to be monotone and positive along the habitat region. We show that the persistence and spreading dynamics of a species are dependent on the speed of the shifting edge of the favorable habitat, c, as well as c*(∞) and c*(−∞), which are formulated in terms of the dispersal kernel and species growth rates in both directions. This dissertation addresses the dynamic control of nonlinear systems with finite energy noise in the state and measurement equations. Regional eigenvalue assignment (REA) is used to ensure that the state estimate error is driven to zero significantly faster than the state itself. Moreover, the controller is designed for the resulting closed loop system to achieve any one of a set of general performance criteria (GPC). The nonlinear model is assumed to have a Lipschitz nonlinearity both in the state and measurement equations. A basic kinetic model that incorporates a coupled dynamics of the carbon atoms and dimers ona copper surface is used to compute growth of a single-layer graphene island. The speed of theisland's edge advancement on Cu[111] and Cu[100] surfaces is computed as a function of the growthtemperature and pressure. Spatially resolved concentration pro les of the atoms and dimers aredetermined, and the contributions provided by these species to the growth speed are discussed.Island growth in the conditions of a thermal cycling is studied.

The Kelly criterion gives the appropriate bet size in idealized situations with known parameters. In financial trading situations parameters are generally unknown and the mathematical assumptions underlying the Kelly proof are not met precisely. Moreover a risk manager typically must cooperate with a trader who may be skeptical about both the Kelly criterion specifically and the concept of mathematical optimization of bet size in general.

Steel strings used on electric and acoustic guitars are non-ideal oscillators that can produce imperfect intonation. According to theory, this intonation should be a function of the bending stiffness of the string, which is related to the dimensions of length and thickness of the string. To test this theory, solid steel strings of three different linear densities were analyzed using an oscilloscope and a Fast Fourier Transform function. We found that strings exhibited more drastic nonlinear harmonic behavior as their effective length was shortened and as linear density increased.

We study the surface diffusion flow acting on a class of general (non--axisymmetric) perturbations of cylinders Cr in IR3. Using tools from parabolic theory on uniformly regular manifolds, and maximal regularity, we establish existence and uniqueness of solutions to surface diffusion flow starting from (spatially--unbounded) surfaces defined over Cr via scalar height functions which are uniformly bounded away from the central cylindrical axis. Additionally, we show that Cr is normally stable with respect to 2π--axially--periodic perturbations if the radius r>1,and unstable if 0

A fluid system consisting of two domains is examined. The system is considered as being bounded at the bottom and top by a flatbed and wave-free surface respectively. An internal wave propagating in one direction, driven by gravity, acts as a free common interface between the fluids. Various current profiles are considered. The Hamiltonian of the system is determined and expressed in terms of canonical wave-related variables. Limiting behaviour is examined and compared to that of other known models. Coupled oscillators, such as groups of fireflies or clusters of neurons, are found throughout nature and are frequently modeled in the applied mathematics literature. Earlier work by Kuramoto, Strogatz, and others has led to a deep understanding of the emergent behavior of systems of such oscillators using traditional dynamical systems methods. In this project we outline the application of techniques from topological data analysis to understanding the dynamics of systems of coupled oscillators. A two-dimensional water wave system is examined consisting of two discrete incompressible fluid domains separated by a free common interface. In a geophysical context this is a model of an internal wave, formed at a pycnocline or thermocline in the ocean. This is a study of the effect of harvesting on a system with two competing species. The system is a Ricker-type model that extends the work done by Luis, Elaydi, and Oliveira to include the effect of harvesting on the system. We look at the uniform bound of the system as well as the isoclines and perform a stability analysis of the equilibrium points. We also look at the effects of harvesting on the stability of the system by looking at the bifurcation of the system with respect to harvesting.

The goal of this talk is to present a student research project in computational population biology, which aims at creating a computer simulation and animation of the spatial dynamics of interactions between two kinds of species living on a torus-shaped universe. The habitat for spatial interactions is modeled by a 2D lattice with periodic boundary conditions, which wrap the rectangular grid into a torus.
