Integrating Neural Networks For Predictive Torque Control And Obstacle Avoidance In Autonomous Robot, Viswanath Kodali, Harsha Vardhan Borra, Kiran P
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
In the field of robotics, precise motion control and accurate computation of joint forces are critical for ensuring optimal performance. Traditional methods, such as using the Jacobian matrix for joint angle determination and Euler-Lagrange equations for torque computation, are reliable but computationally intensive, making them less suitable for real-time applications. This paper presents an advanced approach to improving the productivity and efficiency of a 3-Degree of Freedom (DOF) robotic arm by utilizing Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The proposed system dynamically predicts joint angles and torque, enabling faster and more efficient motion control.

Improved Minimum Variance Channel Estimation Techniques For Ofdm Systems, Kwame S. Ibwe
Improved Minimum Variance Channel Estimation Techniques For Ofdm Systems, Kwame S. Ibwe
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems face challenges in channel estimation due to noise, variability, and the doubly dispersive nature of wireless channels, which degrade performance. To address these challenges, a multichannel minimum variance double dispersive channel estimator is proposed. The method employs a hybrid approach that combines subspace and minimum variance techniques, optimizing the filter bank output power under a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint. This design preserves the desired signal while effectively suppressing disturbances, achieving robust performance with reduced computational complexity compared to existing methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed estimator outperforms subspace and asymptotic methods in terms …

Novel Generative And Language Model Architectures With Applications, Edison Mucllari
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
This dissertation investigates novel architectures to address fundamental challenges in machine learning, particularly focusing on transformer models, recurrent neural networks, GAN and continual learning and their applications in natural language processing and computer vision. We propose the Neumann-Cayley Gated Recurrent Unit (NC-GRU), which leverages a Neumann series-based Scaled Cayley transformation to maintain orthogonal weight matrices, effectively mitigating exploding gradients problems while improving long-term memory retention across prediction tasks. We demonstrate the practical applications of NC-GRU by implementing our proposed architecture into an autoencoder to derive neural molecular fingerprints. Building upon these advancements, we turn our attention to the transformer architecture, …

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Fluid simulation is a cornerstone of computer graphics, enabling the realistic depiction of dynamic phenomena such as smoke, fire, and other gaseous behaviours. This thesis focuses on advancing Eulerian smoke simulation techniques, with a particular emphasis on grid-based simulations that capture intricate vortical structures and fine visual details.
We propose several detail-preserving frameworks that incorporate various scalar and vector fields within the simulation pipeline, including velocity, impulse, and Lamb vectors, along with their decompositions and transformed representations. By mathematically analyzing the properties of impulse, we derive its scalar fields decomposition (ImpSFD), which introduces an alternative numerical interpretation, and Vortex-Particles in …

Scalable Parallel-In-Time Integration For Equations Of Motion, Nathan W. Chapman
All Master's Theses
Physical simulations always need to balance accuracy and run-time. This work implements the Parareal Algorithm using graphics processing units across a distributed system to accurately simulate time-dependent physics while attempting to minimize runtime. Data-transfer latency is identified as the primary bottleneck, for which mitigation methods are provided. Benchmarks comparing single-GPU and distributed implementations on a spectrum of coarse and fine discretizations are analyzed.

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Diabetes remains a critical global health challenge, with early detection is crucial for effective management. This study presents a comprehensive benchmarking analysis of 14 diverse machine learning and Bayesian models for early-stage diabetes risk prediction using clinical data [2] from Sylhet, Bangladesh. This research evaluated traditional methods (Logistic Regression, Decision Trees), ensemble techniques (Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM), Bayesian approaches (BART, Bayesian Logistic Regression), and advanced neural architectures (Deep Belief Networks) using both 70-30 train-test splits and 10-fold cross-validation. The results demonstrate that ensemble methods consistently outperformed other approaches, with Random Forest(RF) achieving the highest cross-validated AUC (0.9951) and accuracy (0.9699). …
Rapid Inference Of Atmospheric Feature Parameters From Light Curves Using Bayesian Neural Networks, Eugenio A. Diaz
Rapid Inference Of Atmospheric Feature Parameters From Light Curves Using Bayesian Neural Networks, Eugenio A. Diaz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Mapping atmospheres using rotationally modulated light curves offers insights into cloud structures and dynamics. Current retrieval methods, primarily based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques like Aeolus, can infer atmospheric features but are computationally prohibitive for large datasets. This project proposes a neural network (NN) framework for the rapid, variational inference of atmospheric structure from light curves, particularly those of brown dwarfs. The primary approach focuses on training a Bayesian NN (BNN) to perform regression, predicting the spot parameters that describe the object's surface brightness map. Given the scarcity of suitable observational training data, the BNN is trained on …

At the intersection of Human Computer Interaction and digital art, this project transforms simple motion into musical expression. It explores an interactive real-time sound synthesis system using ultrasonic sensors to generate continuous audio. The objective is to design a system that maps physical distances into musical parameters such as pitch and amplitude, which will create a responsive audio environment. Two ultrasonic sensors are used in combination with the Raspberry Pi Pico W microcontroller running CircuitPython and Adafruit Audio Hat for real-time sound output. One sensor controls the pitch of the generated tone, while the other controls volume. This enables expressive …

Improving The Accuracy Of Neighborhood Median Pixel Method (Nmpm) In Classifying Landsat-8 Oli Images By Optimizing The Scoring System’S Point Values, Abraham T. Magpantay, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
The Neighborhood Median Pixel Method has previously been introduced as an image processing technique in remote sensing, developed to classify Landsat-8 OLI satellite image pixels into categories of vegetation, water, and built-up areas. This method relies on a lookup table based on the median pixel values within a pixel’s neighborhood and a scoring system that assigns point values for classification. While a 9x9 neighborhood size was originally proposed, a succeeding study suggested a 13x13 neighborhood for better classification accuracy. This study focuses on refining the scoring system used in the Neighborhood Median Pixel Method, particularly the original set of arbitrary …

A Time-Domain Boundary Integral Equation For Moving Acoustic Sources In Uniform Flow And Its Solution By An Advanced Time Propagation Approach, Fang Q. Hu, Douglas M. Nark
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
This paper presents a time-domain boundary integral equation (TDBIE) formulation for predicting acoustic scattering from moving sources in a uniform mean flow. This work is motivated by the increasing need for accurate aeroacoustic modeling of modern aircraft configurations, including VTOL and eVTOL systems with rotating components. A key challenge in time-domain scattering simulations with moving sources is the determination of retarded time for a given observer time, which involves solving an implicit equation at each time step. This can be computationally costly, particularly for numerical solution of the TDBIE where every surface element on the scattering body acts as an …

The Presence Of Outer Giant Planets And Their Role In Inner Planet Formation With And Without Their Influence, Mateo E. Guerra Toro
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
We performed dynamical simulations of the giant impact phase of planet formation to investigate the formation of inner terrestrial planets under the influence of 4 solar system-like outer giant planets. We developed a new code using the N-body simulation suite REBOUND and REBOUNDx (Rein et al. (2019) and Tamayo et al. (2019)) to simulate 2 stages of planetary formation: a residual gaseous protoplanetary disk phase and subsequent dynamical evolution after the disk photoevaporates. The initial conditions for the inner planetary embryos were taken by Morrison et al. (2020) based on a range of solid surface densities that produced Super-Earth terrestrial …

Individual And Collective Properties Of Tunable Photochemical Belousov-Zhabotinsky Micro-Reactors, Kudakwashe Benedict Shumba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cell-like model chemical systems are powerful tools that can be used to explore the role of intercellular coupling on population level behaviors in communities of biological cells. Firstly, we present a new method for fabricating such micro-reactors using the photosensitive Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction system employed in silica microparticles. These BZ micro-reactors have a tunable response to photochemical coupling, varying from a fully excitatory response to a fully inhibitory response. Their response can be tuned through variations in either the reactive mixture or, on an individual micro-reactor level, by changes in the synthesis temperature used during the fabrication of the silica …

Analysis Of Bin Packing Variants, Kyle T. Ambrose
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Bin Packing problem is a classic and widely studied optimization problem that arises naturally in applications like manufacturing, logistics, and memory allocation, where space and resource constraints are critical. In this thesis, we first demonstrate the NP-completeness of Bin Packing via a reduction from Three-Dimensional Matching, establishing its foundational complexity. We then survey core heuristics for the one-dimensional case and extend our analysis to two and three-dimensional variants, including both offline and online strategies. Special attention is given to stochastic bin packing, where item sizes are modeled as random variables drawn from distributions such as uniform, truncated normal, and …

Time-Marching Quantum Algorithm For Simulation Of Nonlinear Lorenz Dynamics, Efstratios Koukoutsis, George Vahala, Min Soe, Kyriakos Hizanidis, Linda Vahala, Abhay K. Ram
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Simulating nonlinear classical dynamics on a quantum computer is an inherently challenging task due to the linear operator formulation of quantum mechanics. In this work, we provide a systematic approach to alleviate this difficulty by developing an explicit quantum algorithm that implements the time evolution of a second-order time-discretized version of the Lorenz model. The Lorenz model is a celebrated system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations that has been extensively studied in the contexts of climate science, fluid dynamics, and chaos theory. Our algorithm possesses a recursive structure and requires only a linear number of copies of the initial state …
Safety And Optimality Monitors For Learning-Enabled Systems Using Conformal Prediction, Jackson Cox
Safety And Optimality Monitors For Learning-Enabled Systems Using Conformal Prediction, Jackson Cox
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The use of machine learning to create data-driven plant models and controllers has led to an increased need for safety and optimality monitors for model-based systems. System plant models are subject to uncertainty due to learning constraints such as unseen data and overfitting or physical constraints such as unknown dynamics and noise. This uncertainty is detrimental to safety-critical systems and must be properly regulated. To curb this uncertainty, we create prediction sets using the guarantees provided by Conformal Prediction. With a user-specified high probability, these prediction sets contain the true plant system states for an entire prediction horizon, which we …

(R2101) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Queueing Inventory System With Two Commodity, Working Vacation, (S, S) Replenishment Policy, Essential And Optional Repair, G. Ayyappan, N. Arulmozhi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We examine a queueing inventory model with single server which can offer two types of inventory items: main item (commodity I) and complementary item (commodity II). We assume both commodities have a finite capacity Si, i = 1, 2. Customers reach the system by following the Markovian arrival process (MAP). The service times are considered to be phase-type (PH) distribution. We have considered no customer in the system, even inventory level is positive; the server will start the working vacation, and any customer that arrives during working vacation, the server provides slow service. If an item is not available, the …

Question-Attentive Review-Level Explanation For Neural Rating Regression, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recommendation explanations help to improve their acceptance by end users. Explanations come in many different forms. One that is of interest here is presenting an existing review of the recommended item as the explanation. The challenge is in selecting a suitable review, which is customarily addressed by assessing the relative importance or “attention” of each review to the recommendation objective. Our focus is improving review-level explanation by leveraging additional information in the form of questions and answers (QA). The proposed framework employs QA in an attention mechanism that aligns reviews to various QAs of an item and assesses their contribution …
A Dynamical Systems Approach For Modeling Malware Propagating Through A Network And Potential Solutions Towards Mitigating Spread, James Johnson
A Dynamical Systems Approach For Modeling Malware Propagating Through A Network And Potential Solutions Towards Mitigating Spread, James Johnson
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Many people draw close parallels between malware propagating through a network and an epidemic spreading through a population. Epidemics are often modeled by a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model, in which a similar system of equations can model the spread of a virus through a computer network, and can be simplified when making assumptions about the network itself and its fixed number of nodes and edges. In this instance, malware propagating in a network also should reflect the network it is propagating through, in which the dynamical system will factor in the nodes of the network and their properties. The system itself …

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship
A hypersurface Mn in a real space form Rn+1, Sn+1, or Hn+1 is isoparametric if it has constant principal curvatures. This paper is a survey of the fundamental work of Cartan and Münzner on the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in real space forms, in particular, spheres. This work is contained in four papers of Cartan [3]–[6] published during the period 1938–1940, and two papers of Münzner [47]–[48] that were published in preprint form in the early 1970’s, and as journal articles in 1980–1981. These papers of Cartan and Münzner have been the …

An Introduction To The Time-Independent Schrödinger Equation And Methods To Solve It, Vu Giang, Alex Gnech
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
The Time-Independent Schrödinger Equation is a linear elliptic PDE that describes quantum-mechanical systems. Its significance in the science of submicroscopic phenomena, particularly quantum mechanics, is as central as Newton’s laws of motion are to classical mechanics. This study uses various methods, including novel neural networks and finite difference schemes, to solve the one-dimensional two-body equation.
An Efficient Fourier Caching Algorithm For Walk On Spheres, Zihong Zhou
An Efficient Fourier Caching Algorithm For Walk On Spheres, Zihong Zhou
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Walk on Spheres (WoS) is a grid-free Monte Carlo method for solving elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs).
Rather than discretizing the domain, WoS leverages the mean-value principle to obtain Monte Carlo estimates by recursively averaging the solution over the largest contained sphere, terminating upon reaching the boundary.
Unfortunately, WoS requires many independent estimates to achieve noise-free results.
We propose an acceleration technique for WoS, inspired by irradiance caching methods, that computes the solution at a sparse set of locations, and extrapolates these cached values to local neighborhoods. A key insight is that WoS can be extended to compute not only …

The ongoing evolution of malware presents a formidable challenge to cybersecurity: identifying unknown threats. Traditional detection methods, such as signatures and various forms of static analysis, inherently lag behind these evolving threats. This research introduces a novel approach to malware detection by leveraging the robust statistical capabilities of L-moments and the structural insights provided by Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs) and applying them to PowerShell. L-moments, recognized for their resilience to outliers and adaptability to diverse distributional shapes, are extracted from network analysis measures like degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality of ASTs. These measures provide a detailed structural representation …

We introduce an efficient variational hybrid quantum-classical algorithm designed for solving Caputo time-fractional partial differential equations. Our method employs an iterable cost function incorporating a linear combination of overlap history states. The proposed algorithm is not only efficient in terms of time complexity but also has lower memory costs compared to classical methods. Our results indicate that solution fidelity is insensitive to the fractional index and that gradient evaluation costs scale economically with the number of time steps. As a proof of concept, we apply our algorithm to solve a range of fractional partial differential equations commonly encountered in engineering …
Certifying Stability In Runge-Kutta Schemes: Algebraic Conditions And Semidefinite Programming, Austin Juhl
Certifying Stability In Runge-Kutta Schemes: Algebraic Conditions And Semidefinite Programming, Austin Juhl
Dissertations
Numerical stability is a critical property for a time-integration scheme. In the context of Runge-Kutta methods applied to stiff differential equations, A-stability is one of the most basic and practically important notions of stability. Dating back to the work of Dahlquist, it has been known that A-stability is equivalent to the Runge-Kutta stability function satisfying a particular convex feasibility problem. Specifically, up to a transformation, the stability function lies in the convex cone of positive functions. In recent years, sum-of-squares optimization and semidefinite programming have become valuable tools in developing rigorous certificates of stability in dynamical systems. Therefore, it is …
