Copper Corrosion Dynamics Under Deep Geologic Repository Conditions, Masoumeh Naghizadeh
Copper Corrosion Dynamics Under Deep Geologic Repository Conditions, Masoumeh Naghizadeh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Canada’s plan for the permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel involves a multiple-barrier system contained within a deep geologic repository (DGR). The key engineered barrier is the used fuel container (UFC), which is a copper-coated carbon steel vessel. The environments to which the copper coating will be exposed in the DGR are very different from those commonly encountered in copper corrosion studies. The copper (Cu) will be in contact with thin stagnant layers of water, and the corrosion system will be exposed to a continuous flux of γ-radiation. In the presence of γ-radiation, water and humid air decompose to redox-active …
Analysis And Differentiation Of Uniform And Localized Corrosion Of Cu, Roshan J. Daljeet
Analysis And Differentiation Of Uniform And Localized Corrosion Of Cu, Roshan J. Daljeet
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The current plan for disposal of used nuclear fuel in Canada involves sealing the waste in steel containers coated with 3 mm of copper and burying them in a deep geologic repository (DGR). The purpose of the copper coating is to provide corrosion resistance. To achieve long term containment, it is necessary that the copper layer corrodes slowly and predictably via active dissolution rather than passivating due to film formation. Film formation could allow pitting corrosion to occur in early phase repository conditions when groundwater ions such as Cl– , SO4 2– and HCO3 – play a dominant role in …
Development And Implementation Of A Pressure-Temperature Control System For The Physical Vapor Deposition Of Copper And Niobium From A Molybdenum Filament In The Development Of Superconducting 3d Printed Rf Cavity Particle Accelerators, Chandler J. Fleuette
Student Research Projects
This report covers the development of the pressure-temperature control system used in the production of small superconducting RF cavities for particle accelerators. To test the validity of the created program, a model for the process was created and tested. The model was used to fine tune the control system before integrating it into the lab. The end goal of the control system is to measure the pressure inside of a deposition vacuum chamber, convert that pressure to a temperature, and use that temperature in tandem with a PID controller to control the current passing though a molybdenum filament which is …
Galvanic Corrosion Of Carbon Steel Coupled To Copper In Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Lindsay J. Braithwaite
Galvanic Corrosion Of Carbon Steel Coupled To Copper In Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Lindsay J. Braithwaite
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Deep geological containment of used nuclear fuel will rely on multiple engineered and natural barriers, two of which are the copper-coated used fuel containers and the compacted bentonite clay buffer boxes in which the containers will rest. This work focused on possible galvanic interactions between the copper coating and the steel substrate of the container, which may occur at a hypothetical through-coating defect. In the presence of various amounts of chloride, bentonite, and oxygen, corrosion of the copper/carbon steel couple was studied using electrochemical tests complemented by surface characterization and 3D X-ray imaging. We investigated the effects of copper-to-steel area …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Biological Evaluation Of New Copper Complexes Ofnaphthyl Pyrazole Ligands, Melek Hinis, Kuldip Singh, Demet Erdönmez, Ayfer Menteş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Two naphthalene pyrazole ligands were synthesized using KOH/DMSO and Cu catalyst and characterized with FT-IR, ESIMS, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The crystal structures of 1-(2-methylnaphthalen-1-yl)-1H-pyrazole (MeNap-Pz) ligand have been determined with X-ray crystal structure analysis. Reaction of the ligands with Cu(NO3)2x3.5H2O gave two new complexes and characterized with magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, FT-IR, LCMS-MS, ICP-OES, NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, and ESR spectra. The spectral data of the ligands are coordinated to the metal ion through the nitrogen atoms of the pyrazole ring. Consequently, it has been determined that [Cu(MeNap-Pz)2 (NO3)]NO3.2H2O complex showed square planar geometry and [Cu(NapMe-Pz)2(NO3)2].H2O complex showed octahedral …

A Fluorescent Sensor-Based Tripodal-Bodipy For Cu (Ii) Ions: Bio-Imaging On Cells, Ahmed Nuri̇ Kurşunlu, Mustafa Özmen, Ersi̇n Güler
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A general synthetic method was improved to synthesize a chemosensor based on a tripodal Bodipy (t-BODIPY) structure. The product and its intermediate products were successfully prepared and fully characterized. The metal ion sensing performance of the tripodal compound was evaluated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. According to the obtained data, t-BODIPY is a selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for detection of Cu2+ ions in the presence and in the absence of competing ions. This chemosensor presents relatively a low detection limit of 5.4 x10-7 M for Cu2+. Bio-imaging studies on living yeast cells suggest that t-BODIPY has some advantages over …
The Electrochemical And Corrosion Study Of Copper For Nuclear Waste Containers Under Deep Geological Disposal Conditions, Mengnan Guo
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The proposed method for the safe disposal of Swedish, Finnish, and Canadian high-level nuclear waste (HLNW) is to isolate it in iron or steel containers with an outer copper (Cu) shell or coating and bury it in a deep geological repository (DGR). Copper has been selected as the corrosion barrier due to its stability in the aqueous anoxic environments anticipated in DGR conditions. The container will initially be exposed to humid aerated conditions which will evolve to cool and anoxic as radiation fields in the fuel decay and heat production ceases. When the DGR is cool and anoxic, sulphide (SH …

Fabrication, Characterization And Applications Of Chemically Modified Planar Metallic Electrodes From Copper Clad Sheets, Rana T. K. Alsaidi
Theses
In this work, we developed a fabricating method for planar electrodes by milling and cutting copper-clad sheets. The main objectives of this thesis are to produce customized planar electrodes with different geometries with relatively higher reusability compared to the screen-printed electrodes available by commercial vendors. The fabricated electrodes from copper-clad sheets were electroplated with different metals using commercial electroplating baths to produce different metallic planar electrodes. Also, the fabrication of planar electrodes with cavities to be filled with modified carbon paste was done. The electroplated planar electrodes were characterized by the cyclic voltammetry technique. In addition to that, they were …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The Nevruztepe iron-copper prospect is a skarn near Yeşilhisar (Kayseri). It has been overlooked as a potential producer of copper. The skarn was generated in Permian to Jurassic carbonate rocks by the Eocene Yahyalı granitic pluton. Lithologic units, including skarns, dip about 15 degrees southward. Skarns are both prograde (garnet and diopside) and retrograde (epidote); both exoskarn and endoskarn exist. Most of the magnetite is in a quartz-sulfide stage in retrograde skarn that is cut by veins and lenses containing quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Granite and mineralized skarn are rare at the surface. From 2013 to 2015, 31 drill holes (totaling 6.178,5 m) …
The Influence Of Radiolytically Produced Nitric Acid On The Corrosion Resistance Of Copper-Coated Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Joseph P. Turnbull
The Influence Of Radiolytically Produced Nitric Acid On The Corrosion Resistance Of Copper-Coated Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Joseph P. Turnbull
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In Canada, the proposed disposal method for high level nuclear waste involves sealing the waste in steel containers with a 3 mm outer copper coating and burying it in a deep geologic repository. However, the thickness of the container is significantly reduced making a reassessment of the influence of γ-radiation, emitted by the waste form, on container corrosion a potential licensing requirement. Under humid aerated conditions, the formation of nitric acid is expected, potentially resulting in the formation of droplets or wetted layers on the container surface. Currently available literature on the corrosion of copper in nitric acid does not …

Drinking water quality can be compromised by heavy metals, such as copper and lead. If consumed raw, water can pose a health burden to the general population. In this study, the roles of heavy metals and biological contaminants have been explored in determining the quality of drinking water available to consumers of various socioeconomic backgrounds in the United States. In an effort to gain an understanding of possible social disparities in drinking water, a quantitative analysis was conducted to examine whether vulnerable populations are disproportionately impacted by drinking water contaminants. Our data indicated that states with middle-average household incomes were …
Immobilization Of Copper Nanoparticles Onto Various Supports Applications In Catalysis, Anh Hoang Tu Nguyen Sorenson
Immobilization Of Copper Nanoparticles Onto Various Supports Applications In Catalysis, Anh Hoang Tu Nguyen Sorenson
Theses and Dissertations
Copper-based materials are one of the most promising catalysts for performing transformations of important organic compounds in both academic and industrial operations. However, it is challenging to consistently synthesize highly active and stable copper species as heterogeneous catalysts due to their relatively high surface energy. As a result, agglomeration usually occurs, which limits the catalytic activities of the copper species. The work presented in this dissertation shows different synthetic strategies for obtaining active and stable copper-based materials by modifying chemical/physical properties of copper nanoparticles (NPs). Emphasis is placed on discussing specific catalytic systems, including carbon-supported catalysts (monometallic and bimetallic copper-based …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, new chalcone compound 1, new phthalonitrile derivatives 2 and 3, new copper(II), manganese(III) phthalocyanines bearing chalcone groups at peripheral or nonperipheral positions were synthesized. Electrochemistry of tetra-(4- {(2E)-3-[2-fluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]prop-2-enoyl}phenoxy) substituted Co(II)Pc and Mn(III)Pcs were studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV) to determine the redox properties of the phthalocyanines. According to the results, while the CuPcs 2a and 3a showed two Pc based reduction reactions and one Pc based oxidation reaction, MnPcs 2b and 3b gave two metal-based reduction reactions. All the redox processes are shifted toward positive potentials as a result of the increased electron-withdrawing ability of the trifluoromethyl …

Porphyry ore deposits are major sources of copper (Cu) and gold (Au) and form when a magmatic volatile phase (MVP) exsolves from a porphyritic intermediate to felsic melt and transports metals to surrounding country rock where they precipitate in an ore zone. There is a consensus that the chloride concentration of the MVP has a direct relationship to the concentration of Cu and Au in the MVP, but the role of dissolved HCl on Cu and Au concentrations has not been addressed. It is hypothesized that increasing HCl concentrations in the MVP will result in higher concentrations of Cu and …

Herein we report an in-depth study on the cytotoxic mechanism of action of four developmental cytotoxic copper(II) complexes: [Cu(phen)2]2+ (Cu-Phen); [Cu(DPQ)(Phen)]2+ (Cu-DPQ-Phen); [Cu(DPPZ)(Phen)]2+; and [Cu(DPPN)(Phen)]2+ (where Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DPQ = dipyrido[3,2-f:20,30-h]quinoxaline, DPPZ = dipyrido[3,2-a:20,30-c]phenazine, and DPPN = benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:20,30-c]phenazine). This complex class is known for its DNA intercalative properties and recent evidence—derived from an in vivo proteomic study—supports the potential targeting of mitochondrial function. Therefore, we focused on mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis related to cytotoxic activity and the potential impact these agents have on mitochondrial function. The Cu(II) complexes demonstrated superior activity regardless of aromatic extension within the phenazine ligand to the …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Currently, the global emission of greenhouse CO2 is over 36 billion tons per year. Consequently, the atmosphere's CO2 concentrations have exceeded 400 ppm, which is the highest reported in the last three million years. The accumulation of CO2 is the most critical origin for today's climate change; thus, closing the carbon cycle is vital to reverse the detrimental impacts of climate change. Under this goal, the electrochemical reduction of CO2 into commodity fuels and chemicals via renewable energy is one of the most promising strategies to recycle CO2. Despite significant progress made in electrocatalysis, …

Galvanic Corrosion Of Copper-Coated Carbon Steel For Used Nuclear Fuel Containers, Thalia E. Standish
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Carbon steel vessels coated with ∼3 mm of Cu have been proposed for the permanent disposal of used nuclear fuel in a deep geological repository (DGR) in Canada. In the event of an undetected defect in the Cu coating that exposes the steel substrate, galvanically accelerated corrosion of steel is, in principle, possible. To investigate this scenario, the progression of steel corrosion at the base of novel simulated through-coating defects was monitored electrochemically and imaged non-destructively using X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) as a function of time, O2 availability (including anoxic conditions), and coating method (cold spray deposition (with and …

Chemical Speciation In Silver Bow And Blacktail Creeks: Implications For Bioavailability And Restoration, Johnathan Feldman
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Silver Bow and Blacktail Creeks, contaminated with toxic elements from mining, present a need for remediation and restoration. Trace elements are present in elevated concentrations, particularly copper. Determining element speciation will allow informed consideration of effective restoration strategies, by providing a foundation for assessing bioavailability and toxicity. The three goals are: determine how speciation varies between seasons and sites in four impacted sites from the greater Butte Area One, an impacted downstream site known as Santa, and a control site on Upper Blacktail Creek known as Blacktail; how these variations influence bioavailability and toxicity; and what causes these variations. Total …

1,4-Triazolyl combretacoumarins have been prepared by linking the trimethoxyarene unit of combretastatin A4 with coumarins, via a 1,2,3-triazole. For this, 4-azidocoumarins were accessed by a sequential two-step, one-pot reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarins with (benzotriazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP), followed by reaction with NaN3. In the reaction with BOP, a coumarin-derived phosphonium ion intermediate seems to form, leading to an O4-(benzotriazolyl)coumarin derivative. For the CuAAC reaction of azidocoumarins with 5-ethynyl-1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene, catalytic [(MeCN)4Cu]PF6 in CH2Cl2/MeOH with 2,6-lutidine, at 50 oC, was suitable. The 4-azidocoumarins were less reactive as compared to PhN3 and …
