An Analytical Model Of Motion Artifacts In A Measured Arterial Pulse Signal—Part I: Accelerometers And Ppg Sensors, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Subodh Toraskar, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper, the first of two parts, presents an analytical model of motion artifacts (MAs) in measured pulse signals by accelerometers and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors. As the transmission path from the true pulse signal in an artery to the sensor output (measured pulse signal), the tissue-contact-sensor (TCS) stack is modeled as a 1DOF (degree-of-freedom) system. MAs cause baseline drift of the mass and simultaneously time-varying system parameters (TVSPs) of the TCS stack. With arterial wall displacement and pulsatile pressure serving separately as the true pulse signal, an analytical model is developed to mathematically relate baseline drift and TVSP to a …
Motion Artifacts Removal From Measured Arterial Pulse Signals At Rest: A Generalized Sdof-Model-Based Time-Frequency Method, Zhili Hao
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Motion artifacts (MA) are a key factor affecting the accuracy of a measured arterial pulse signal at rest. This paper presents a generalized time–frequency method for MA removal that is built upon a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model of MA, where MA is manifested as time-varying system parameters (TVSPs) of the SDOF system for the tissue–contact-sensor (TCS) stack between an artery and a sensor. This model distinguishes the effects of MA and respiration on the instant parameters of harmonics in a measured pulse signal. Accordingly, a generalized SDOF-model-based time–frequency (SDOF-TF) method is developed to obtain the instant parameters of each harmonic in …

(1) Background: Comprehensive conceptual models can result in complex artifacts, consisting of many concepts that interact through multiple mechanisms. This complexity can be acceptable and even expected when generating rich models, for instance to support ensuing analyses that find central concepts or decompose models into parts that can be managed by different actors. However, complexity can become a barrier when the conceptual model is used directly by individuals. A ‘transparent’ model can support learning among stakeholders (e.g., in group model building) and it can motivate the adoption of specific interventions (i.e., using a model as evidence base). Although advances in …

The comparison of SE and AE …
Comparing And Evaluating Models Of Tile-Assembly Using Intrinsic Simulation, Daniel Hader
Comparing And Evaluating Models Of Tile-Assembly Using Intrinsic Simulation, Daniel Hader
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tile-assembly studies abstract models of computation inspired by advancements in the emerging field of DNA-nanotechnology, where synthetic strands of DNA are used as building blocks for microscopic structures. These DNA strands can be made to combine into structural units with selectively sticky sides that abstractly resemble Wang tiles. However, unlike Wang tiles, an assembly process is modeled where tiles combine one-by-one to form larger assemblies according to matching rules based on their sticky sides. While in practice, these tile-assembly models have seen use in designing DNA nano-structures, the mathematical study of their theory has revealed an exciting interplay between geometric …

BACKGROUND: Jointly analyzing multiple phenotype/traits may increase power in genetic association studies by aggregating weak genetic effects. The chance that at least one phenotype is missing increases exponentially as the number of phenotype increases especially for a real dataset. It is a common practice to discard individuals with missing phenotype or phenotype with a large proportion of missing values. Such a discarding method may lead to a loss of power or even an insufficient sample size for analysis. To our knowledge, many existing phenotype imputing methods are built on multivariate normal assumptions for analysis. Violation of these assumptions may lead …

De-Identification Is Not Enough: A Comparison Between De-Identified And Synthetic Clinical Notes, Atiquer Rahman Sarkar, Yao-Shun Chuang, Noman Mohammed, Xiaoqian Jiang
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
For sharing privacy-sensitive data, de-identification is commonly regarded as adequate for safeguarding privacy. Synthetic data is also being considered as a privacy-preserving alternative. Recent successes with numerical and tabular data generative models and the breakthroughs in large generative language models raise the question of whether synthetically generated clinical notes could be a viable alternative to real notes for research purposes. In this work, we demonstrated that (i) de-identification of real clinical notes does not protect records against a membership inference attack, (ii) proposed a novel approach to generate synthetic clinical notes using the current state-of-the-art large language models, (iii) evaluated …

Giving instructions for a character to navigate around a scene provides a simple analog for the planning needed in computer programming. While many children’s navigation games exist, most require the child to use a combination of input devices such as keyboard, mouse, and controllers for play. Children under the age of five may struggle to use a mouse, but they can easily construct the plans needed for such a game. This research explores layout and graph connectivity algorithms to connect tactile game pieces for a navigation game. A web camera identifies the position of action cards and numerical modifiers (card: …

The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) is an NP-optimization problem (NPO) that arises in various fields including transportation and logistics. The CVRP extends from the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), aiming to determine the most efficient plan for a fleet of vehicles to deliver goods to a set of customers, subject to the limited carrying capacity of each vehicle. As the number of possible solutions increases exponentially with the number of customers, finding high-quality solutions remains a significant challenge. Recently, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), a quantum–classical hybrid algorithm, has exhibited enhanced performance in certain combinatorial optimization problems, such as …

Khovanov Homology And Legendrian Simple Knots, Ryan J. Maguire
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The Jones polynomial and Khovanov homology are powerful invariants in knot theory. Their computations are known to be NP-Hard and it can be quite a challenge to directly compute either of them for a general knot. We develop explicit algorithms for the Jones polynomial and discuss the implementation of an algorithm for Khovanov homology. Using this we tabulate the invariants for millions of knots, generate statistics on them, and formulate conjectures for Legendrian and transversely simple knots.

Confronting Algorithms: Conscience Catching In The Criminal Trial And Beyond, Sherman J. Clark
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Using the question of how to treat algorithmic evidence under the Confrontation Clause as an entry point, I argue that the use of AI in ethically salient situations presents a risk. It may cause us to avoid confronting our own responsibility. This matters because facing up to what we do, including what we delegate, can help us grow and thrive. Bearing responsibility can help us nurture vital capacities, including forms of empathy, honesty, and dignity. In the language of ethics, these are eudaimonist virtues—traits and capacities that can help us live well and fully. We should thus find ways of …

Objective: Passive monitoring of touchscreen interactions generates keystroke dynamic signals that can be used to detect and track neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and psychomotor impairment with minimal burden on the user. However, this typically requires datasets with clinically confirmed labels collected in standardized environments, which is challenging, especially for a large subject pool. This study validates the efficacy of a self-supervised learning method in reducing the reliance on labels and evaluates its generalizability.
Materials and methods: We propose a new type of self-supervised loss combining Barlow Twins loss, which attempts to create similar feature representations with reduced …

Cryogenic electron tomography (cryoET) is a powerful tool in structural biology, enabling detailed 3D imaging of biological specimens at a resolution of nanometers. Despite its potential, cryoET faces challenges such as the missing wedge problem, which limits reconstruction quality due to incomplete data collection angles. Recently, supervised deep learning methods leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have considerably addressed this issue; however, their pretraining requirements render them susceptible to inaccuracies and artifacts, particularly when representative training data is scarce. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a proof-of-concept unsupervised learning approach using coordinate networks (CNs) that optimizes network weights directly against input …

Asteroidal Sets And Dominating Targets In Graphs, Oleksiy Al-Saadi
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The focus of this PhD thesis is on various distance and domination properties in graphs. In particular, we prove strong results about the interactions between asteroidal sets and dominating targets. Our results add to or extend a plethora of results on these properties within the literature. We define the class of strict dominating pair graphs and show structural and algorithmic properties of this class. Notably, we prove that such graphs have diameter 3, 4, or contain an asteroidal quadruple. Then, we design an algorithm to to efficiently recognize chordal hereditary dominating pair graphs. We provide new results that describe the …

OBJECTIVE: The HIV epidemic remains a significant public health issue in the United States. HIV risk prediction models could be beneficial for reducing HIV transmission by helping clinicians identify patients at high risk for infection and refer them for testing. This would facilitate initiation on treatment for those unaware of their status and pre-exposure prophylaxis for those uninfected but at high risk. Existing HIV risk prediction algorithms rely on manual construction of features and are limited in their application across diverse electronic health record systems. Furthermore, the accuracy of these models in predicting HIV in females has thus far been …

Land image recognition and classification and land environment detection are important research fields in remote sensing applications. Because of the diversity and complexity of different tasks of land environment recognition and classification, it is difficult for researchers to use a single model to achieve the best performance in scene classification of multiple remote sensing land images. Therefore, to determine which model is the best for the current recognition classification tasks, it is often necessary to select and experiment with many different models. However, finding the optimal model is accompanied by an increase in trial-and-error costs and is a waste of …

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies have become essential tools for characterizing cellular landscapes within complex tissues. Large-scale single-cell transcriptomics holds great potential for identifying rare cell types critical to the pathogenesis of diseases and biological processes. Existing methods for identifying rare cell types often rely on one-time clustering using partial or global gene expression. However, these rare cell types may be overlooked during the clustering phase, posing challenges for their accurate identification. In this paper, we propose a Cluster decomposition-based Anomaly Detection method (scCAD), which iteratively decomposes clusters based on the most differential signals in each cluster to effectively separate …
