Gpr-187 Deep Learning Models For Protein-Protein Binding Affinity Prediction, Lingtao Chen
C-Day Computing Showcase
Binding affinity (BA) prediction is important for drug discovery and protein engineering. It seeks to understand the interaction strength between proteins and their ligands (or proteins). This information assists in the design of proteins with enhanced or novel functions, as well as understanding the molecular mechanisms of drug action. This paper presents the development and comparative analysis of two deep learning models, a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a transformer model. Many variants of models in this research were developed using TensorFlow. One model that utilizes ProteinBERT was developed using PyTorch. The CNN model captures local sequence features effectively, while …

Gpr-185 A Multimodal Approach To Quiz Generation: Leveraging Rag Models For Educational Assessments, Mourya Teja Kunuku
C-Day Computing Showcase
Crafting quiz questions that effectively assess students’ understanding of lectures and course materials, such as textbooks, poses significant challenges. Recent AI-based quiz generation efforts have predominantly concentrated on static resources, like textbooks and slides, often overlooking the dynamic and interactive elements of live lectures—contextual cues, discussions, and interactions—that contribute to the learning experience. In this work, we propose a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) model that processes multimodal inputs by combining text, audio, and video to produce quizzes that capture a fuller context. Our method incorporates Whisper for audio transcription and utilizes a Large Vision-Language Model (LVLM) to extract essential visual data …

Honors Program Theses and Projects
Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly expanding my homelab, a personal setup for me to experiment with software, hardware, and deployment configurations. One driving force behind this is my desire to digitize and save anything that is important to me or that I want easy access to. I started with my family’s old CD collection, then moved on to any Blu-rays movie discs we had. Eventually, I started thinking about what else I care about and don’t want to lose track of. This brought me to the thought that any YouTube video that I may want to revisit …

Probing The Interactions Of Anticancer Drug Doxorubicin To Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Jason Martin
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Doxorubicin (Doxo) is a historically significant anti-cancer drug that has been used to treat multiple types of cancers for half a century. The drug targets DNA of cancer cells through a binding mode called intercalation, acting as roadblock during DNA replication to stop tumor formation. While Doxo has been extensively studied through traditional methods, only a handful of research has utilized single molecule methods, which can provide new insights at the molecular level. In this study, we used dual beam optical tweezers to isolate single DNA molecules and mechanically manipulate the DNA in the presence of Doxo. We conducted two …

Preparation Of Manganese-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots@Halloysite Nanotubes Composites Films For Advanced Uv Shielding Properties, Xiao Zhang, Bin Wang
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The development of Ultraviolet (UV) shielding materials are of great importance to protect human's health concerns and prevent the degradation of organic matters. However, the synthesis of highly efficient UV shielding polymer nanocomposites is currently limited by the agglomeration of inorganic anti-UV nanoparticles (NPs) within the polymer matrix and limited absorption spectrum of UV shielding agents. In this study, highly effective manganese doped carbon quantum dots@halloysite nanotubes composites (Mn-CDs@HNTs/PAS) were successfully synthesized by loading manganese doped carbon quantum dot (Mn-CDs) into UV shielding effective halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) via solvothermal method, followed by polymerization modification. The results show that inorganic NPs …

Understanding Ammonia's Role In Mitigating Concentration Polarization In Anion-Exchange Membrane Electrodialysis, Abdallah Timmaoui, Mahmoud Ferhat, Nesri̇ne Souad Ferhat, Ahmed Hamdi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In processes such as electrodialysis, the applied electrical potential is constrained by concentration polarization at the membrane/solution interface. This polarization, which intensifies at higher current densities, impedes ion transport efficiency and may lead to problems such as salt precipitation, membrane degradation, and increased energy consumption. Therefore, understanding concentration polarization is essential for enhancing membrane performance, improving efficiency, and reducing operational costs. This study investigates the impact of ammonia buffer (NH₄⁺/NH₃) on sulfate ion transport through anion-exchange membranes, with a particular focus on limiting current density and concentration polarization under constant current conditions. Our findings demonstrate that ammonia effectively eliminates concentration …

Contributions Of Glacier Meltwater To Water Resources And Water Quality Below The Ablating Coropuna Ice Cap In The Arid Peruvian Andes, Alexis Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
Rapidly retreating glaciers in the arid tropics are an invaluable resource for communities that depend on meltwater to support drinking water, agriculture, hydropower production, and mining. There is limited understanding of how glacier loss will impact regional water resources, groundwater flow paths, and water quality, especially during the dry season. The Nevado Coropuna volcano in Southern Peru has one of the largest remaining ice caps in the tropics, but has experienced rapid ice loss in the past few decades and is projected to disappear in the next century due to climate change. Located in the northern Atacama Desert, the arid …

Using Two-Dimensional Terahertz Spectroscopy To Explore Vibrations, Magnetism, And Their Coupling, Megan Faux Biggs
Theses and Dissertations
Terahertz (THz) light is at the resonant frequency of important fundamental excitations within crystalline materials such as carrier dynamics, phonons, and spin-wave excitations called magnons. THz light can be produced at high field strengths using optical rectification in nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (BNA) is one such crystal commonly used to produce THz when pumping with 800 nm light. Here, we improve upon the design of the molecular building blocks of BNA by replacing a hydrogen atom with a fluorine atom, leading to improved THz generation and a higher crystal damage threshold. Later, we focus on using THz light to …

New battery materials with improved transport are needed. Typical measurements yield widely varying voltage-dependent diffusivities and reporting practices are diverse. Some materials (e.g. first-order phase change) have most redox occur at a specific voltage and may be sufficiently represented by singular transport metrics. Many rapid intercalation materials, however, exhibit second-order phase transitions with redox over a broad voltage range. How should such cases be compared? The use of capacity-weighted average values is suggested where voltage-dependent metrics are consolidated into representative descriptors as figures-of-merit. Examples are elaborated where differential capacity (dQ/dV) is used to derive a …
Synthesis Of Higher-Order Catenanes And Catenane-Based Materials, Gray Harlan
Synthesis Of Higher-Order Catenanes And Catenane-Based Materials, Gray Harlan
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Catenanes are a subset of mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) and are composed of interlocked rings that can be oriented linearly, radially, or branched. A defining feature of all MIMs is that they are bound through their architectures consisting of mechanical bonds, leading to unique topologies. Catenanes have attracted interest due to their stimuli-responsive behavior and the degrees of freedom afforded by the mechanical bond, a feature which is absent with standard covalent bonds. The stimuli responsiveness of catenanes arises from their templated syntheses, where two or more pre-macrocycles are brought together by a driving force. Various templation strategies rely on …

Theses and Dissertations
Solute segregation in materials with grain boundaries (GBs) has emerged as a popular method to thermodynamically stabilize nanocrystalline structures. However, the impact of varied GB crystallographic character on solute segregation has never been thoroughly examined. This work examines Co solute segregation in a dataset of 7272 Al bicrystal GBs that span the 5D space of GB crystallographic character. Considerable attention is paid to verification of the calculations in the diverse and large set of GBs. In addition, the results of this work are favorably validated against similar bicrystal and polycrystal simulations. As with other work, we show that Co atoms …
