The karst areas in southwest China are one of the key but difficult areas targeted in the “Beautiful China” construction initiative, which focuses on soil erosion, proportion of farmland, water pollution, karst drought, ecological restoration, carbon sink, ecological effects of urbanization, rocky desertification management indicators, and biodiversity and sustainability assessment. The study synthesizes the knowledge accumulated during ecological restoration practice in karst areas into 10 problems and solutions that are strong, universal and empirically supported. In solar–terrestrial physics, there is an open question: does a geomagnetic storm affect earthquakes? We expand research in this direction, analyzing the seismic situation after geomagnetic storms (GMs) accompanied by the precipitation of relativistic electrons from the outer radiation belt to form an additional radiation belt (RB) around lower geomagnetic lines. We consider four widely discussed cases in the literature for long-lived (weeks, months) RBs due to GMs and revealed that the 1/GMs 24 March 1991 with a new RB at L~2.6 was followed by an M7.0 earthquake in Alaska, 30 May 1991, near footprint L = 2.69; the 2/GMs …

Affected by both increasing human activities and climate change, Yunnan Plateau lakes were faced with threats such as water level decreasing, water-body reducing, and severe pollution. Heavy polluting industries are the important sources of industrial pollutant. Understanding the spatial agglomeration characteristics, influencing factors, agglomeration mechanism and environmental effects of China’s heavy polluting industries can help identify potential pollution risk areas to cope with increasingly severe environmental pollution problems. Based on the industrial economic data from 1999 to 2021, the spatial distribution and agglomeration characteristics of heavy polluting industries are characterized. OBJECTIVES: Currently, no systemic treatments are approved for patients with recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). PRT543, a protein arginine methyltransferase 5 inhibitor that downregulates NOTCH1 and MYB signalling in tumours, is a potential candidate for R/M ACC treatment. We report the safety, tolerability and preliminary efficacy of PRT543 in a dose-expansion cohort of patients with R/M ACC.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation dose escalation may improve local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) in select pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients. We prospectively evaluated the safety and efficacy of ablative stereotactic magnetic resonance (MR)-guided adaptive radiation therapy (SMART) for borderline resectable (BRPC) and locally advanced pancreas cancer (LAPC). The primary endpoint of acute grade ≥ 3 gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity definitely related to SMART was previously published with median follow-up (FU) 8.8 months from SMART. Availability of fine-grained, community-level data is limited to support said communities’ appeals for public health practice, planning, and policy changes. While many students have math aversion, students in low socioeconomic communities exhibit this to a higher degree putting them at a disadvantage as they progress through their educational career. High-quality food composition data are indispensable for decision making in several health, agricultural, and nutrition-related activities. Analytical data are the most accurate type of food composition data (FCD). Yet, most food composition databases (FCDBs) compiled in Sub-Saharan Africa only contain a small amount of analytical data collected from foods consumed in this region. Most of the data are either borrowed / copied from FCDBs collected in other parts of the world, calculated, imputed, or presumed data. This dissertation discusses research that focuses on understanding transneptunian objects (TNOs) using a variety of techniques and approaches. In Chapter 1, I introduce the main concepts used throughout this dissertation and discuss the current understanding of the transneptunian region. In Chapter 2, I discuss my efforts to understand how Neptune's late stages of migration affect the Haumea family, the only known collisional family in the transneptunian region. Using advanced simulations of Neptune migration, I find that the Haumea family can plausibly form before the termination of giant planet migration and show that this extensively mixes the family. Porphyrins have been widely used as photosensitizers in research due to their important role in many biological processes. Phthalocyanines have also gained interest in biological applications such as photodynamic therapy (PDT). This dissertation is focused on the synthesis of different photosensitizers for various applications. This dissertation's first section focuses on research involving synthesizing covalently bonded donor-acceptor systems as photosensitizers. Specifically in this work, two porphyrin-fullerene dyads were synthesized using a modified tetraphenyl porphyrin with varying bridges between the porphyrin and fullerene. Lipid membranes, which self-assemble in nature and under laboratory conditions, can form vesicles called liposomes. The main uses for liposomes are in drug delivery systems and as animal cell models. From the initial research into lipid membrane science, to the systematic literature review using Web of Science, to refining the project scope, to the description of the method, this project follows the process of developing a method for lipid membrane self-assembly and synthesis in the lab. Introduction: The prevalence of obesity and obesity-related secondary disorders has increased dramatically in recent years. Dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) expression has been linked to the development of obesity and its associated disorders. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) are promising cell models of obesity, obesity-related inflammation and diabetes. Furthermore, miRNA expression profiles have emerged as promising targets for the novel treatment of diseases such as obesity. In order to enhance miRNA-based therapies, the miRNA expression profile of obesity and its related disorders must be monitored to further understand the underlying mechanisms of obesity and to identify novel targets.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. There are currently 2.8 million people living with Multiple Sclerosis worldwide, including 9000 people in Ireland, with a prevalence of 193 per 100,000 people. Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis include sensory loss, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, spasticity, depression, optic neuritis, gait ataxia, diplopia, and loss of bladder control. Currently, there is no standardised treatment or cure for Multiple Sclerosis with many strategies focusing on symptoms.
