Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa Jan 2021

Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa

MPP Published Research

In this paper we would like to attempt to shed some light on the way in which diagrams enter into the practice of ancient Greek geometrical analysis. To this end, we will first distinguish two main forms of this practice, i.e., trans-configurational and intra-configurational. We will then argue that, while in the former diagrams enter in the proof essentially in the same way (mutatis mutandis) they enter in canonical synthetic demonstrations, in the latter, they take part in the analytic argument in a specific way, which has no correlation in other aspects of classical geometry. In intra-configurational analysis, diagrams represent …

Analysis, Constructions And Diagrams In Classical Geometry, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

Greek ancient and early modern geometry necessarily uses diagrams. Among other things, these enter geometrical analysis. The paper distinguishes two sorts of geometrical analysis and shows that in one of them, dubbed “intra-confgurational” analysis, some diagrams necessarily enter as outcomes of a purely material gesture, namely not as result of a codifed constructive procedure, but as result of a free-hand drawing.

Thus, understanding fire drivers and their effect is important for the sustainable forest fire management. However, the preceding studies on forest specific fire drivers and their effect are limited. This research has identified the fire drivers and assessed their effect to fire occurrences in the Tropical Mixed Broad-leaved Forests of Nawalparasi District, Nepal. Fire drivers were identified and prioritized by participatory approaches. …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Ethiopian Cement Manufacturing: A Potential Improvement On The Use Of Fossil Fuel In Mugher Cement Factory, Lemma Beressa, Battula Vijaya Saradhi

Applied Environmental Research

The use of imported fuel in the Ethiopian cement industry increased the cost of production and the environmental burden, necessitating intervention. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, energy usage intensity, and resource exploitation of Ethiopian cement production were evaluated using the life cycle impact assessment (LCA) tool, aiming to recommend improvements. The LCA study used cumulative energy demand (CED) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2006 life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods. For the case study of Mugher cement factory (MCF), the results on energy use intensities showed 3.74, 3.67, and 2.64 GJ/ton of clinker, Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Pozzolana …

Mesoporous Carbon/Silica Nanocomposites With Acid And Base Properties For Glucose Conversion Into Value Added Chemicals, Satit Yousatit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The purpose of this study is to prepare mesoporous carbon/silica (MCS) nanocomposites using natural rubber (NR) as a renewable carbon source. A series of mesoporous nanocomposites based on NR and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS), prepared via an in situ sol-gel process, were used as precursors, which were then converted into the MCS materials by carbonization. The sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous carbon/silica (MCS-SO3H) was prepared by direct sulfonation with H2SO4 solution. The silica surface of MCS-SO3H were then grafted by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane to produce the acid–base catalysts (MCS-SO3H-NH2) and used as the solid catalysts in glucose conversion. The MCS nanocomposites exhibited enhanced structural, …

Development Of Retention Index Based Simulation For Validation Of Compound Identification In Gc×Gc, Palathip Kakanopas Jan 2021

Development Of Retention Index Based Simulation For Validation Of Compound Identification In Gc×Gc, Palathip Kakanopas

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) is a high-performance technique for separation, identification and quantification of volatiles and semi-volatiles in complex multi-component samples such as biomolecular molecules, essential oil, foods, and petroleum. One of the most popular detectors used for peak identification with GC×GC is mass spectrometer (MS) allowing identification of separated peaks based on comparison with mass spectral library. However, only MS library comparison shows low confidence in compound identifications due to the fact that compounds with similar structures (especially for isomers) often have similar mass spectra. Apart from sample preparation, a great challenge is to effectively select types of …

Effect Of Electric Field On Molecular And Electronic Structures Of Graphene With 4n-Divacancy Defect And Application On Hydrogen Gas Storage, Thanawit Kuamit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The effect of external electric fields (EEFs) on geometries and electronic properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and m-4N-divacancy defect GQDs (m-4N-GQDs) was studied using density functional theory (DFT) method with M06-2x functional and 6-31g (d) basis set. An external electric field with strength ranging from -0.035 to 0.035 atomic units (a.u.) was applied normal to the molecular plane. Three different sizes, i.e., C24H12, C54H18, and C96H24, were investigated. The metal doping in m-4N-GQDs consists of Ca, Ca2+, Cr, Cr2+, Fe, and Fe2+. Our results revealed that GQDs and m-4N-GQDs are curved under EEFs in the direction opposite to the …

Distributed Cross-Community Collaboration For The Cloud-Based Energy Management Service, Yu-Wen Chen, J. Morris Chang

Publications and Research

Customers’ participation is a critical factor for inte-grating the distributed energy resources via demand response and demand-side management programs, especially when customers become prosumers. Incentives need to be delivered by the energy management service to attract prosumers to operate their distributed energy resources and electricity loads grid-friendly actively. The cloud-based energy management service enables virtual trading for customers within the same community to minimize cost and smooth the fluctuation. With the potential fast-growing number of service providers and customers, the needs exist for efficiently collaborating across multiple service providers and customers. This paper proposes the distributed cross-community collaboration (XCC) for …

Prediction Intervals For Fractionally Integrated Time Series And Volatility Models, Rukman Ekanayake Jan 2021

Prediction Intervals For Fractionally Integrated Time Series And Volatility Models, Rukman Ekanayake

Doctoral Dissertations

"The two of the main formulations for modeling long range dependence in volatilities associated with financial time series are fractionally integrated generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (FIGARCH) and hyperbolic generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (HYGARCH) models. The traditional methods of constructing prediction intervals for volatility models, either employ a Gaussian error assumption or are based on asymptotic theory. However, many empirical studies show that the distribution of errors exhibit leptokurtic behavior. Therefore, the traditional prediction intervals developed for conditional volatility models yield poor coverage. An alternative is to employ residual bootstrap-based prediction intervals. One goal of this dissertation research is to develop …
