I3: Isomerization Of Isomer Ions, Krisztián Gabor Torma Jan 2019

I3: Isomerization Of Isomer Ions, Krisztián Gabor Torma

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy is a robust tool for elucidating complex unimolecular dissociation mechanisms and for determining thermochemical and kinetic data of gas-phase ion dissociations with high accuracy. In this work, the dissociative photoionization of two sets of isomeric systems were analyzed with PEPICO: 1) C7H7+ ions of toluene (Tol) and 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene (CHT), and 2) two butyl alcohol isomers, 1-butanol and isobutanol. Threshold dissociative photoionization data on these four molecules of interest were collected on the imaging PEPICO apparatus at the VUV beamline of the Swiss Light Source. Data analysis was aided by ab initio calculations and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) …

Shizen Nōhō: Restoring The Relationship Between Food, Nature, And People In Japan, Katharine Graham Jan 2019

Shizen Nōhō: Restoring The Relationship Between Food, Nature, And People In Japan, Katharine Graham

Scripps Senior Theses

In Japan’s postwar era, agriculture has become highly industrialized, involving heavy machinery, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides, all in the name of “progress.” Through employing such practices, humans have attempted to improve upon nature’s way of doing things, and in turn have degraded the soil’s fertility, natural ecosystems, and human health. In response to this, Shizen Nōhō has emerged in Japan as an alternative way of cultivating food. Shizen Nōhō practitioners challenge the notion that we need chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery to farm successfully. Rather, they advocate for a way of growing food that functions seamlessly with natural ecosystems. This …

On A Class Of Parameter Dependent Series Generalizing Euler’S Constant, Paul Bracken Jan 2019

On A Class Of Parameter Dependent Series Generalizing Euler’S Constant, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Series which depend on a parameter and generalize the constant discovered by Euler are introduced and studied. Convergence results are established. An infinite series expansion is obtained from these generalized formulas which can be used to evaluate the generalized constant. Euler’s constant can be obtained as a special case. Some asymptotic results are formulated and limits of some closely related sequences are given.

Multi-Person Tracking By Multi-Scale Detection In Basketball Scenarios, Adria Arbués-Sanguesa, Gloria Haro, Coloma Ballester Jan 2019

Multi-Person Tracking By Multi-Scale Detection In Basketball Scenarios, Adria Arbués-Sanguesa, Gloria Haro, Coloma Ballester

Session 1: Active Vision, Tracking, Motion Analysis

Tracking data is a powerful tool for basketball teams in order to extract advanced semantic information and statistics that might lead to a performance boost. However, multi-person tracking is a challenging task to solve in single-camera video sequences, given the frequent occlusions and cluttering that occur in a restricted scenario. In this paper, a novel multi-scale detection method is presented, which is later used to extract geometric and content features, resulting in a multi-person video tracking system. Having built a dataset from scratch together with its ground truth (more than 10k bounding boxes), standard metrics are evaluated, obtaining notable results …

Nuclear Frames In The Irish Media: Implications For Conversations On Nuclear Power Generation In The Age Of Climate Change, Catherine Devitt, Finbarr Brereton, Simon Mooney, David Conway, Eoin O'Neill

Articles

Keeping within the temperature limits set by the Paris Agreement on climate action will be a significant challenge. Nuclear power generation may contribute to achieving these targets, however, there are significant environmental, economic and health risks attached. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, this paper explores how nuclear power generation is framed in the Irish print media, and discusses the implications of these frames for how nuclear power is perceived within the context of climate change mitigation in Ireland. Two Irish broadsheet papers, the Irish Times and the Irish Independent were selected for data collection, focusing on Chernobyl and Fukushima incidents. …

Luminescent Calcium Carbonate Micro ‘Bow Ties’, Fearghal C. Donnelly, Finn Purcell-Milton, Peter W. Dunne, Aleksandra Rulikowska, Victor Alguacil, Yurii K. Gun’Ko Jan 2019

Luminescent Calcium Carbonate Micro ‘Bow Ties’, Fearghal C. Donnelly, Finn Purcell-Milton, Peter W. Dunne, Aleksandra Rulikowska, Victor Alguacil, Yurii K. Gun’Ko

Articles

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a ubiquitous material which has been studied for centuries due to its integral nature across various fields and its vast range of applications. Here we report, for the first time, a low temperature dry ice carbonation method for the production of unique rare earth-doped calcium carbonate ‘bow ties’. CaCO3 exhibits retrograde solubility, an interesting property in which its solubility increases with decreasing temperature. In this synthesis, dry ice acts not only as a CO2 source, but as a coolant, increasing the solubility of CaCO3 and CO2 and allowing specific growth to occur. The incorporation of trivalent …

Carbon Dioxide Measurement In Irish Blanket Peatlands: An Assessment Of Pool-Soil Flux Variability, Mariya Radomski, Alan Gilmer, Vivienne Byers, Eugene Mcgovern Jan 2019

Carbon Dioxide Measurement In Irish Blanket Peatlands: An Assessment Of Pool-Soil Flux Variability, Mariya Radomski, Alan Gilmer, Vivienne Byers, Eugene Mcgovern

Articles

Peatlands have been recognised as having a significant role in the mediation of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels with direct implications for global climate change. Longitudinal in situ measurement systems for CO2 concentrations in blanket peatland ecosystems are difficult to implement where the nature of terrestrial–aquatic connectivity and hydrodynamics have a significant effect on the carbon cycle. The need for greater data on CO2 concentrations and flux monitoring in these settings has been well recognised. However, applying the most appropriate monitoring approach presents a special challenge. This paper sets out the development of a direct method for field based longitudinal …

Three Decades Of On-Road Mobile Source Emissions Reductions In South Los Angeles, Gary A. Bishop

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

In May of 2018, the University of Denver repeated on-road optical remote sensing measurements at two locations in Lynwood, CA. Lynwood area vehicle tailpipe emissions were first surveyed in 1989 and 1991 because the area suffered with a large number of carbon monoxide (CO) air quality violations. These new measurements allow for the estimation of fuel specific CO and total hydrocarbon (HC) emissions reductions, changes in the longevity of emission-control components, and the prevalence of high emitters in the current fleet.

Since 1989 CO emissions decreased approximately factors of 10 (120 ± 8 to 12.3 ± 0.2 gCO/kg of fuel) …

A New Network Model For Cyber Threat Intelligence Sharing Using Blockchain Technology, Daire Homan, Ian Shiel, Christina Thorpe Jan 2019

A New Network Model For Cyber Threat Intelligence Sharing Using Blockchain Technology, Daire Homan, Ian Shiel, Christina Thorpe

Conference Papers

The aim of this research is to propose a new blockchain network model that facilitates the secure dissemination of Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) data. The primary motivations for this study are based around the recent changes to information security legislation in the European Union and the challenges that Computer Security and Incident Response Teams (CSIRT) face when trying to share actionable and highly sensitive data within systems where participants do not always share the same interests or motivations. We discuss the common problems within the domain of CTI sharing and we propose a new model, that leverages the security properties …

Articles

We developed a new type of chalcohalide glasses with physicochemical and nonlinear optical properties that are tunable by composition. It is found that more than 60 mol.% CdCl2 heavy metal halide can be dissolved into the ternary Ge–Sb–S system and forming stable glasses. The visible-light transparency range is extended to shorter wavelengths with the addition of CdCl2, which is beneficial for the optical quality control and infra-red (IR) system alignment. The third-order optical nonlinearity (TONL) is studied using the femtosecond Z-scan method. The results show that both the nonlinear refractive index and two photon absorption co-efficient decrease with CdCl2. Benefiting …

All Fibre Q-Switched Thulium-Doped Fibre Laser Incorporating Thulium–Holmium Co-Doped Fibre As A Saturable Absorber, Shi Li, Elfed Lewis, Gerald Farrell, Ahmad Haziq Aiman Rosol, A.A. Latiff, Sulaiman Wadi Harun, Bingang Guo, Pengfei Wang

Articles

A novel all fibre Q-switched Thulium-doped fibre laser (TDFL) is reported which includes a short length of a Thulium–Holmiumco-doped fibre (THDF) as a saturable absorber. A high repetition rate (27.26 kHz) coupled with a low pulse width (19.06μs) is obtained for single wavelength Q-switched pulse operation at an output wavelength of 1911.5 nm using a pump power of 200 mW. Increasing the pump power from 200 mW to 700 mW results in the repetition rate increasing from 27.26 kHz to 99.67 kHz and the pulse width decreasing from 19.06μs to 920 ns. The centre wavelength of the single Q-switched pulse …

Distribution Of Tm 3+ And Ni 2+ In Chalcogenide Glass Ceramics Containing Ga2s3 Nanocrystals: Influence On Photoluminescence Properties, Xiaosong Lu, Zhiqiang Lai, Jing Ren, Lukas Strizik, Tomas Wagner, Yanqiu Du, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang

Articles

The distribution of Tm3+ and Ni2+ ions is unambiguously exhibited in 80GeS2-20Ga2S3 chalcogenide glass ceramics (GCs) containing Ga2S3 nanocrystals (NCs) by using advanced analytical transmission electron microscopy. Distinctively different distribution patterns of Tm3+ and Ni2+ ions are observed in the GCs obtained by controlled crystallization. The distribution of the dopants imposes strong influence on their optical properties which are revealed by absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Detailed discussions are given of the mechanisms of the crystallization-induced PL enhancement and quenching of the Tm3+ mid-infrared and Ni2+ near-infrared emissions, respectively.

Sensing Of Multiple Parameters With Whispering Gallery Mode Optical Fiber Micro-Resonators, Arun Kumar Mallik Dr, Vishnan Kavungal, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova

Conference Papers

Monitoring of multiple physical parameters, such as humidity, temperature, strain, concentrations of certain chemicals or gases in various environments is of great importance in many industrial applications both for minimizing adverse effects on human health as well as for maintaining production levels and quality of products. In this paper we demonstrate two different approaches to the design of multi-parametric sensors using coupled whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical fiber micro-resonators. In the first approach, a small array of micro-resonators is coupled to a single fiber taper, while in the second approach each of the micro-resonators within an array is coupled to …

Self-Cleaning Hydrophobic Nanocoating On Glass: A Scalable Manufacturing Process, Surendra Maharjan, Kang-Shyang Liao, Alexander J. Wang, Killian Barton, Amrita Haldar, Nigel J. Alley, Hugh Byrne, Seamus A. Curran

Articles

A method of forming a self-cleaning hydrophobic coating (SCHN) on glass substrates utilizing a scalable manufacturing process is described. The process initiates with roughening of planar glass surfaces using diamond micro-/nano-particle abrasives, which creates microscopic tortuous grooves. After cleaning the substrates, the roughened surface is vapor deposited with trichloro(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)silane (TCPFOS) under enclosure with controlled humidity. TCPFOS chemically binds with the substrate via covalent linkage. Due to the greatly reduced surface tension between water and the self-cleaning surface, the water droplet slides down leaving no trail (sliding angle of 14° for 0.1 mL water droplet). Due to the reduced adhesion of …

Raman Spectroscopy As A Potential Tool For Label Free Therapeutic Drug Monitoring In Human Serum: The Case Of Busulfan And Methotrexate, Drishya Parachalil, Franck Bonnier, Deirdre Commerford, Igor Chourpa, Jennifer Mcintyre, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A methodology is proposed, based on Raman spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analysis, to determine the Limit of Detection (LOD) and Limit of Quantification (LOQ) for therapeutic drug monitoring in human serum, using the examples of Busulfan, a cell cycle non-specific alkylating antineoplastic agent, and, Methotrexate, a chemotherapeutic agent and immune system suppressant. In this study, ultrafiltration is employed to fractionate spiked human pooled serum to efficiently recover the drug in the filtrate prior to performing Raman analysis. The drug concentration ranges were chosen to encompass the recommended therapeutic ranges and toxic levels in patients. Raman spectra were collected from the …

On The Use Of Vibrational Spectroscopy And Scanning Electron Microscopy To Study Phenolic Extractability Of Cooperage Byproducts In Wine, Berta Baca‑Bocanegra, Julio Nogales‑Bueno, Brian Gorey, Francisco José Heredia, Hugh Byrne, José Miguel Hernández‑Hierro

Articles

Wood is an important source of phenolic compounds, which can be transferred to wine during aging process, improving its properties, from an organoleptic point of view. Therefore, understanding and optimizing the extractability of phenolic compounds from wood are crucial in the oenological field. The structural composition of oak wood samples has been evaluated using Raman and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopies, and their main spectral features have been linked to phenolic compound extractabilities, as measured by classic chemical analyses. To support the analysis, microscopic images of the samples were also recorded using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The …

On The Determination Of The Number Of Positive And Negative Polynomial Zeros And Their Isolation, Emil Prodanov Jan 2019

On The Determination Of The Number Of Positive And Negative Polynomial Zeros And Their Isolation, Emil Prodanov

Articles

A novel method with two variations is proposed with which the number of positive and negative zeros of a polynomial with real co-efficients and degree $n$ can be restricted with significantly better determinacy than that provided by the Descartes' rule of signs and also isolate quite successfully the zeros of the polynomial. The method relies on solving equations of degree smaller than that of the given polynomial. One can determine analytically the exact number of positive and negative zeros of a polynomial of degree up to and including five and also fully isolate the zeros of the polynomial analytically and …

Van Der Waals Universe With Adiabatic Matter Creation, Emil Prodanov, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2019

Van Der Waals Universe With Adiabatic Matter Creation, Emil Prodanov, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

A FRWL cosmological model with perfect fluid comprising of van der Waals gas and dust has been studied in the context of dynamical analysis of a three-component autonomous non-linear dynamical system for the particle number density $n$, the Hubble parameter $H$, and the temperature $T$. Perfect fluid isentropic particle creation at rate proportional to an integer power $\alpha$ of $H$ has been incorporated. The existence of a global first integral allows the determination of the temperature evolution law and hence the reduction of the dynamical system to a two-component one. Special attention is paid to the cases of $\alpha = …

Equatorial Wave–Current Interactions, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2019

Equatorial Wave–Current Interactions, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

We study the nonlinear equations of motion for equatorial wave–current interactions in the physically realistic setting of azimuthal two-dimensional inviscid flows with piecewise constant vorticity in a two-layer fluid with a flat bed and a free surface. We derive a Hamiltonian formulation for the nonlinear governing equations that is adequate for structure-preserving perturbations, at the linear and at the nonlinear level. Linear theory reveals some important features of the dynamics, highlighting differences between the short- and long-wave regimes. The fact that ocean energy is concentrated in the long-wave propagation modes motivates the pursuit of in-depth nonlinear analysis in the long-wave …

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini Jan 2019

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini

Articles

A new modelling approach for the analysis of weighted networks with ordinal/polytomous dyadic values is introduced. Specifically, it is proposed to model the weighted network connectivity structure using a hierarchical multilayer exponential random graph model (ERGM) generative process where each network layer represents a different ordinal dyadic category. The network layers are assumed to be generated by an ERGM process conditional on their closest lower network layers. A crucial advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of adopting the binary network statistics specification to describe both the between-layer and across-layer network processes and thus facilitating the interpretation of the …

On The Reidemeister Spectrum Of An Abelian Group, Brendan Goldsmith, Fatemeh Karimi, Noel White Jan 2019

On The Reidemeister Spectrum Of An Abelian Group, Brendan Goldsmith, Fatemeh Karimi, Noel White

Articles

The Reidemeister number of an automorphism ϕ of an Abelian group G is calculated by determining the cardinality of the quotient group G/(ϕ − 1G)(G), and the Reidemeister spectrum of G is precisely the set of Reidemeister numbers of the automorphisms of G. In this work we determine the full spectrum of several types of group, paying particular attention to groups of torsion-free rank 1 and to direct sums and products. We show how to make use of strong realization results for Abelian groups to exhibit many groups where the Reidemeister number is infinite for all automorphisms; such groups then …

Image-Based Malware Classification: A Space Filling Curve Approach, Stephen O Shaughnessy Jan 2019

Image-Based Malware Classification: A Space Filling Curve Approach, Stephen O Shaughnessy

Conference Papers

Anti-virus (AV) software is effective at distinguishing between benign and malicious programs yet lack the ability to effectively classify malware into their respective family classes. AV vendors receive considerably large volumes of malicious programs daily and so classification is crucial to quickly identify variants of existing malware that would otherwise have to be manually examined. This paper proposes a novel method of visualizing and classifying malware using Space-Filling Curves (SFC's) in order to improve the limitations of AV tools. The classification models produced were evaluated on previously unseen samples and showed promising results, with precision, recall and accuracy scores of …

Multi-Spectral Visual Crop Assessment Under Limited Data Constraints, Patricia O'Byrne, Patrick Jackman, Damon Berry, Hector-Hugo Franco-Penya, Michael French, Robert J. Ross Jan 2019

Multi-Spectral Visual Crop Assessment Under Limited Data Constraints, Patricia O'Byrne, Patrick Jackman, Damon Berry, Hector-Hugo Franco-Penya, Michael French, Robert J. Ross

Conference papers

In an era of climate change and global population growth, deep learning based multi-spectral imaging has the potential to significantly assist in production management across a wide range of agricultural and food production domains. A key challenge however in applying state-of-the-art methods is that they, unlike classical hand crafted methods, are usually thought of as being only useful when significant amounts of data are available. In this paper we investigate this hypothesis by examining the performance of state-of-the-art deep learning methods when applied to a restricted data set that is not easily bootstrapped through pre-trained image processing networks. We demonstrate …

A Self Healing Microservices Architecture: A Case Study In Docker Swarm Cluster, Basel Magableh, Muder Almiani Jan 2019

A Self Healing Microservices Architecture: A Case Study In Docker Swarm Cluster, Basel Magableh, Muder Almiani

Conference papers

One desired aspect of a self-adapting microservices architecture is the ability to continuously monitor the operational environment, detect and observe anomalous behaviour as well as implement a reasonable policy for self-scaling, self-healing, and self-tuning the computational resources in order to dynamically respond to a sudden change in its operational environment. Often the behaviour of a microservices architecture continuously changes over time and the identification of both normal and abnormal behaviours of running services becomes a challenging task. This paper proposes a self-healing Microservice architecture that continuously monitors the operational environment, detects and observes anomalous behaviours, and provides a reasonable adaptation …

An Evaluation Of The Reliability, Validity And Sensitivity Of Three Human Mental Workload Measures Under Different Instructional Conditions In Third-Level Education, Luca Longo, Giuliano Orru

Conference papers

Although Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) has been researched for many years, it has been criticised for its theoretical clarity and its methodological approach. A crucial issue is the measurement of three types of cognitive load conceived in the theory, and the assessment of overall human cognitive load during learning tasks. This research study is motivated by these issues and it aims to investigate the reliability, validity and sensitivity of three existing self-reporting mental workload instruments, mainly used in Ergonomics, when applied to Education and in particular to the field of Teaching and Learning. A primary research study has been designed …
