Evolution Of A Bluetooth Test Application Product Line: A Case Study, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Evolution Of A Bluetooth Test Application Product Line: A Case Study, Narayanasamy Ramasubbu, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we study the decision making process involved in the five year lifecycle of a Bluetooth software product produced by a large, multi-national test and measurement firm. In this environment, customer change requests either have to be added as a standard feature in the product, or developed as a special customized version of the product. We first discuss the influential factors, such as evolving standards, market share, installed-base, and complexity, which collectively determined how the firm responded to product change requests. We then develop a predictive decision model to test the collective impact of these factors on determining …

Fluoride-Promoted Ligand Exchange In Diaryliodonium Salts, Bijia Wang, Ronald Cerny, Shriharsha Uppaluri, Jayson J. Kempinger, Stephen G. Dimagno
Stephen DiMagno Papers
Diaryliodonium salts are shown to undergo rapid, fluoride-promoted aryl exchange reactions at room temperature in acetonitrile. Aryl exchange is shown to be exquisitely sensitive to the concentration of fluoride ion in solution; fast exchange is observed as the fluoride concentration approaches a stoichiometric amount at 50 mM substrate concentration. The reaction is slowed, but not halted if benzene is the solvent, indicating that free fluoride ion or a four-coordinate anionic I(III) species may be responsible for the exchange. The fluoride-promoted aryl exchange reaction is general and allows direct measurement of the relative stabilities of diaryliodonium salts featuring different aryl substituents. …
Tree-Based Algorithms For Computing K-Combinations And K-Compositions, Shant Karakashian, Berthe Y. Choueiry
Tree-Based Algorithms For Computing K-Combinations And K-Compositions, Shant Karakashian, Berthe Y. Choueiry
School of Computing: Technical Reports
In this document, we describe two tree-based algorithms for computing all k-combinations and k-compositions of a finite set.
We have developed two algorithms for solving the following combinatorial tasks:
• Given a finite set S and a natural number k, find all subsets of S of size k. In the literature, this problem is called k-subsets and k-combinations.
• Given two natural numbers k, n where k [less than or equal to] n, find all k-compositions of n where a k-composition is an ordered combination of k nonzero natural numbers whose sum is n. Note that in the literature, a …
Agent Sensing With Stateful Resources, Adam D. Eck
Agent Sensing With Stateful Resources, Adam D. Eck
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In many real-world applications of multi-agent systems, agent reasoning suffers from bounded rationality caused by both limited resources and limited knowledge. When agent sensing also requires resource use, the agent’s knowledge revision is affected due to its inability to always sense when and as accurately as needed, further leading to poor decision making. In this research, we consider what happens when sensing activities require the use of stateful resources, which we define as resources whose state-dependent behavior changes over time based on usage. Specifically, sensing itself can change the state of a resource, and thus its behavior, which affects both …

This paper presents the development of a real-time hardware/software laboratory to interface a soft real-time power system simulator with multiple unified power flow controllers (UPFC) via hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to study their dynamic responses and validate control and placement approaches. This paper describes a unique laboratory facility that enables large-scale, soft real-time power system simulation coupled with the true physical behavior of a UPFC as opposed to the controller response captured by many other real-time simulators. The HIL line includes a synchronous machine, a UPFC, and a programmable load to reproduce the physical dynamics of the UPFC sub-network.

Enhanced Electrochemistry Of Nanoparticle-Embedded Polyelectrolyte Films: Interfacial Electronic Coupling And Distance Dependence, Callie E. Dowdy, Michael C. Leopold
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Factors affecting the electronic communication believed to be responsible for the enhanced solution electrochemistry observed at electrodes modified with hybrid polyelectrolyte–nanoparticle (PE–NP) film assemblies were systematically investigated. Specifically, the faradaic current and voltammetric peak splitting recorded for cyclic voltammetry of ferricyanide redox species (Fe(CN)63−/4−) at films constructed with various architectures of citrate-stabilized gold NPs embedded in polyelectrolyte films composed of poly-l-lysine and poly-S-styrene were used to establish the relative importance of both distance and electronic coupling. Layer-by-layer construction of PE–NP films allowed for the position and density of NPs to be varied within the film to assess electronic coupling between …

Would Position Limits Have Made Any Difference To The 'Flash Crash' On May 6, 2010, Wing Bernard Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng, Annie Koh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
On May 6, 2010, the US equity markets experienced a brief but highly unusual drop in prices across a number of stocks and indices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell by approximately 9% in a matter of minutes, and several stocks were traded down sharply before recovering a short time later. Earlier research by Lee, Cheng and Koh (2010) identified the conditions under which a “flash crash” can be triggered by systematic traders running highly similar trading strategies, especially when they are “crowding out” other liquidity providers in the market. The authors contend that the events of May 6, …

Entity linking task is a process of linking the named entity within the unstructured text to the entity in the Knowledge Base. Entity liking to the relevant knowledge is useful in various information extraction and natural language processing applications that improve the user experiences such as search, summarization and so on. We propose the two way entity linking approach to reformulate query, disambiguate the entity and link to the relevant KB repository. This paper describes the details of our participation in TAC 2010 - Knowledge Base Population track. We provided an innovative approach to disambiguate the entity by query reformulation …

Semi-Autonomous Virtual Valet Parking, Arne Suppe, Luis Navarro-Serment, Aaron Steinfeld
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite regulations specifying parking spots that support wheelchair vans, it is not uncommon for end users to encounter problems with clearance for van ramps. Even if a driver elects to park in the far reaches of a parking lot as a precautionary measure, there is no guarantee that the spot next to their van will be empty when they return. Likewise, the prevalence of older drivers who experience significant difficulty with ingress and egress from vehicles is nontrivial and the ability to fully open a car door is important. This work describes a method and user interaction for low cost, …

The Impact Of Social Media On Software Engineering Practices And Tools, Margaret-Anne Storey, Christoph Treude, Arie Van Deursen, Li-Te Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Today's generation of software developers frequently make use of social media, either as an adjunct or integrated into a wide range of tools ranging from code editors and issue trackers, to IDEs and web-based portals. The role of social media usage in software engineering is not well understood, and yet the use of these mechanisms influences software development practices. In this position paper, we advocate for research that strives to understand the benefits, risks and limitations of using social media in software development at the team, project and community levels. Guided by the implications of current tools and social media …
An Analytic Characterization Of Model Minimization In Factored Markov Decision Processes, Guo W., Tze-Yun Leong
An Analytic Characterization Of Model Minimization In Factored Markov Decision Processes, Guo W., Tze-Yun Leong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Model minimization in Factored Markov Decision Processes (FMDPs) is concerned with finding the most compact partition of the state space such that all states in the same block are action-equivalent. This is an important problem because it can potentially transform a large FMDP into an equivalent but much smaller one, whose solution can be readily used to solve the original model. Previous model minimization algorithms are iterative in nature, making opaque the relationship between the input model and the output partition. We demonstrate that given a set of well-defined concepts and operations on partitions, we can express the model minimization …

Report To The Commissioner Of Soil Conservation On The Condition Of The Pastoral Resource Base 2010, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Natural resources published reports
Western Australia’s rangelands cover 87% of the state and include all but the south west. Pastoral leases, used for grazing of livestock on native vegetation, cover 35% (874,000 km2) of the rangelands, with Unallocated Crown Lands (UCL) and lands vested for conservation and Indigenous purposes making up the balance. There are currently 459 registered pastoral stations (made up of 510 pastoral leases) in Western Australia; there are 159 stations in the Northern Rangelands (Kimberley and Pilbara), 291 stations in the Southern Rangelands, and nine stations in the South West Land Division.

Upper Cretaceous Peay Bentonites (North-Central Wyoming): Provenance And Tectonics Interpretation From Ash Composition, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Carl F. Vondra, Karl E. Seifert, Malek Shami, Rochelle Cardinale, Thakur Chaturgan
Publications and Research
The Peay bentonites belong to the basal Frontier Formation (Bighorn Basin, north-central Wyoming), primarily outcrop in the Bighorn Basin, rest on an extensively bioturbated sandstone unit, the Peay Sandstone, and are generally the thinner bentonitic unit. Beds of very light gray to greenish gray bentonite are also abundant in the lower Frontier units between Kaycee and Mayoworth (Powder River Basin) and are very rarely as much as 3 m thick. Bentonite occurs within the interstratified shale, sandstone, and siltstone sequences of the lower Frontier unit throughout much of the southwestern Powder River Basin. The purpose of this study is to …
Gains In Power From Structured Two-Sample Tests Of Means On Graphs, Laurent Jacob, Pierre Neuvial, Sandrine Dudoit
Gains In Power From Structured Two-Sample Tests Of Means On Graphs, Laurent Jacob, Pierre Neuvial, Sandrine Dudoit
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We consider multivariate two-sample tests of means, where the location shift between the two populations is expected to be related to a known graph structure. An important application of such tests is the detection of differentially expressed genes between two patient populations, as shifts in expression levels are expected to be coherent with the structure of graphs reflecting gene properties such as biological process, molecular function, regulation, or metabolism. For a fixed graph of interest, we demonstrate that accounting for graph structure can yield more powerful tests under the assumption of smooth distribution shift on the graph. We also investigate …

A Critical Analysis Of Payload Anomaly-Based Intrusion Detection Systems, Anthony F. Mercurio
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Examining payload content is an important aspect of network security, particularly in today's volatile computing environment. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that simply analyzes packet header information cannot adequately secure a network from malicious attacks. The alternative is to perform deep-packet analysis using n-gram language parsing and neural network technology. Self Organizing Map (SOM), PAYL over Self-Organizing Maps for Intrusion Detection (POSEIDON), Anomalous Payload-based Network Intrusion Detection (PAYL), and Anagram are next-generation unsupervised payload anomaly-based IDSs. This study examines the efficacy of each system using the design-science research methodology. A collection of quantitative data and qualitative features exposes their strengths …

2010 Warbonnet Ranch Botanical Survey, Robert F. Steinauer
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project (Schneider et al, 2005), a statewide comprehensive wildlife conservation strategy developed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC), identified the Pine Ridge and Oglala Grasslands of northwestern Nebraska as “Biologically Unique Landscapes” (BULs). Native plant community and rare plant surveys were conducted on the approximately 8,000-acre privately-owned Warbonnet Ranch. The Ranch occurs within both of the above mentioned BULs and is topographically and geologically diverse. The primary goal of this survey was to document the botanical resources of a well-managed, privately-owned, western Nebraska range and determine its potential for conservation of Nebraska’s biological diversity. …

This article develops a general method for constructing entanglement-assisted quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which is based on combinatorial design theory. Explicit constructions are given for entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes with many desirable properties. These properties include the requirement of only one initial entanglement bit, high error-correction performance, high rates, and low decoding complexity. The proposed method produces several infinite families of codes with a wide variety of parameters and entanglement requirements. Our framework encompasses the previously known entanglement-assisted quantum LDPC codes having the best error-correction performance and many other codes with better block error rates in simulations over the …

Allocating Homeland Security Screening Resources Using Knapsack Problem Models, Rebecca Dreiding
Allocating Homeland Security Screening Resources Using Knapsack Problem Models, Rebecca Dreiding
Theses and Dissertations
Since the events of September 11, 2001, the federal government is focused on homeland security and the fight against terrorism. This thesis addresses the idea of terrorist groups smuggling nuclear weapons through the borders of the United States. Security screening decisions are analyzed within maritime and aviation domains using discrete optimization models, specifically knapsack problems. The focus of the maritime chapters involves a risk-based approach for prescreening intelligence classifications for primary and secondary screening decisions given limited budget and resources. Results reveal that screening decisions are dependent on prescreening classification and the efficacy of the screening technologies. The screening decisions …
Twisted Lattice Supersymmetry And Applications To Ads/Cft, Simon Catterall
Twisted Lattice Supersymmetry And Applications To Ads/Cft, Simon Catterall
Physics - All Scholarship
Review recent approaches to constructing supersymmetric lattice theories focusing in particular on the concept of topological twisting. The latter technique is shown to expose a nilpotent, scalar supersymmetry which can be implemented exactly in the lattice theory. Using these ideas a lattice action for \cN=4 super Yang-Mills in four dimensions can be written down which is gauge invariant, free of fermion doublers and respects one out of a total of 16 continuum supersymmetries. It is shown how these exact symmetries together with the large point group symmetry of the lattice strongly constrain the possible counterterms needed to renormalize the theory …
Stereotype Logit Models For High Dimensional Data, Andre Williams
Stereotype Logit Models For High Dimensional Data, Andre Williams

Gene expression studies are of growing importance in the field of medicine. In fact, subtypes within the same disease have been shown to have differing gene expression profiles (Golub et al., 1999). Often, researchers are interested in differentiating a disease by a categorical classification indicative of disease progression. For example, it may be of interest to identify genes that are associated with progression and to accurately predict the state of progression using gene expression data. One challenge when modeling microarray gene expression data is that there are more genes (variables) than there are observations. In addition, the genes usually demonstrate …

Circulation is an important delivery method for both natural and synthetic molecules, but microenvironment interactions, regulated by endothelial cells and critical to the molecule's fate, are difficult to interpret using traditional approaches. In this work, we analyzed and predicted growth factor capture under flow using computer modeling and a three-dimensional experimental approach that includes pertinent circulation characteristics such as pulsatile flow, competing binding interactions, and limited bioavailability. An understanding of the controlling features of this process was desired. The experimental module consisted of a bioreactor with synthetic endothelial-lined hollow fibers under flow. The physical design of the system was incorporated …
Leveraging Information Technology Within A Roman Catholic Diocese, Sidney K. Rodriguez
Leveraging Information Technology Within A Roman Catholic Diocese, Sidney K. Rodriguez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Parishes within the Roman Catholic Church face many of the same concerns as any other non-profit organization. Dependencies on donations and volunteer help restrict the parish to leverage technology to gain efficiencies. Parishes have an additional concern. Although grouped under a Diocese, this hierarchical structure is not a standard, top-down directive organization. A Roman Catholic Diocese is a "subsidiarity". Decisions are made at the lowest level, specifically; decisions on how to operate and administer the parish are given to the pastor or parish director of that parish. Acknowledging that leveraging technology is a way to gain efficiencies, the ability to …

Packing Virtual Machines Onto Servers, David Luke Wilcox
Packing Virtual Machines Onto Servers, David Luke Wilcox
Theses and Dissertations
Data centers consume a significant amount of energy. This problem is aggravated by the fact that most servers and desktops are underutilized when powered on, and still consume a majority of the energy of a fully utilized computer even when idle This problem would be much worse were it not for the growing use of virtual machines. Virtual machines allow system administrators to more fully utilize hardware capabilities by putting more than one virtual system on the same physical server. Many times, virtual machines are placed onto physical servers inefficiently. To address this inefficiency, I developed a new family of …
