Effects Of Solvents And Electrolyte Salts On The Electrochemical Reduction Of Oxygen In Non-Aqueous Electrolytes, Yan-Yan Tian, Wei Wu, Jun Gao, Yong Yang
Effects Of Solvents And Electrolyte Salts On The Electrochemical Reduction Of Oxygen In Non-Aqueous Electrolytes, Yan-Yan Tian, Wei Wu, Jun Gao, Yong Yang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrochemical reduction processes of oxygen in different non-aqueous solvents such as acetonitrile(MeCN),propylene carbonate(PC) and their mixtures were investigated by cyclic voltammetry method. The results indicated a one electron reduction of oxygen to O2-occured in these systems as a first step reduction,no matter whether in tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate(TBAPF6)/MeCN or TBAPF6/PC electrolyte. However, the CV curves in 0.1 mol·L-1 TBAPF6/MeCN showed a couple of reversible redox peaks, indicating that the reduction process of oxygen was irreversible in the 0.1 mol·L-1 TBAPF6/PC electrolyte. In the PC-based electrolyte, the reduction current peak reduced largely and the oxidation peak …

Comparative Studies On The Deterioration Process Of Organic Coatings Under Immersed And Cyclic Wet-Dry Conditions By Eis, Yu-Nan Li, Jia Wang, Wei Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Under the immersed and wet-dry cyclic conditions, the deterioration processes of the organic coatings on carbon steel surface have been comparatively studied by using electrochemical techniques. The wet-dry cycles were carried out in the alternating conditions of 12 h by immersing in a 3.5% sodium chloride solution and drying at 25 ℃ and 50% RH.Coating resistance,Rf,coating capacitance,Cf,and double layer capacitance,Cd,were monitored continuously and separately under above two conditions. The percentages of the intenfacial active area,Aw,were estimated from the obtained double layer capacitance,Cd.According to the EIS characteristics, the entire deterioration processes under above two mentioned conditions can be divided into three main stages, consisting of the …

Electrochemical Behaviors Of Organic Coating/Matal Substrate Under Simulated Deep Sea Environment Partⅰ.Effects Of Seawater Pressure On Transportation Behavior Of Water Through Coating And Coating′S Protective Performance, Bin Liu, Zhi-Gang Fang, Tao Wang, Hong-Bin Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
By means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS),the electrochemical behaviors of organic coating/metal substrate were studied under simulated deep sea environment in the laboratory.Effects of seawater pressure on the transportation behavior of water through coating and the protective performance of coating were analyzed. The experimental results showed that, compared to normal pressured seawater, there were different impedance characteristics of coating in 3.5 MPa pressured seawater. The main observations were that high seawater pressure accelerated the process of water uptake and invalidation of coating, increased water absorption, and lowered the anti-corrosion property of coating.

Initial Stage Of Atmospheric Corrosion Of Ndfeb(M35) In A Simulated Marine Atmosphere, Chun-Ling Li, Yuan-Tai Ma, Ying Li, Fu-Hui Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
This study detailed the atmospheric corrosion behaviour of sintered NdFeB(M35) in a simulated marine atmosphere with 80% relative humidity(RH).The dissolution and subsequent reaction of NaCl particles cause the attack of NdFeB.The corrosion presented three representative types:if the electrolyte covered magnetic phase and Nd-rich phase, the Nd-rich phase was corroded firstly due to galvanic effect;if the electrolyte covered magnetic phase, magnetic phase was corroded along the grain boundary;if the electrolyte located near the position of defects, corrosion progressed along with the defect because of low concentration of oxygen inside the defect. With corrosion progressing, local corrosion areas were mutually connected, with Nd-rich phase and grain boundary being …

Electroless Deposition And Characterization Of Nickel Coating In Lead-And Cadmium-Free Bath, Fang-Zu Yang, Ming-Hui Chen, Xia-Jing Huang, Zhong-Qun Tian, Shao-Min Zhou
Journal of Electrochemistry
Technology of electroless nickel deposition in lead-and cadmium-free bath was developed.Coating′s morphology, composition, structure and electrochemical activity were characterized by SEM,EDS,XRD and electrochemical methods. The results showed that, the deposition rate of nickel in self-catalysing was 22.4 μm·h-1,which was increased by the increase of bath temperature and pH value. The effect of sodium hypophosphite on deposition rate was much more remarkable compared with nickel sulfate. The obtained nickel coating was 7.8% in phosphor weight content, having compact and neat surface morphology, amorphous structure, and good electrochemical corrosion resistance in sodium chloride solution.

Study On Aluminum Foils For Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor, Hui-Zhong Tan, Guo-Qing Qian, Wen-Bao Wang, Lan Sun, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),weight-loss method and electrochemical testing method were employed to study the chemical compositions and corrosion behaviors of hard foil and soft foil. The results showed that the surface morphology, chemical composition and crystal structure of hard foil and soft foil are different. It is found from electrochemical tests that the soft foil is suitable to the corrosion under low acidity conditions, which provides the base for developing the corrosion techniques under low acidity conditions.

Eis Study On The Change Of Resistance And Water Absorption During The Failure Graduation Of Inorganic Zinc-Rich/Epoxy/Aliphatic Polyurethane Composite Coatings, Shao-Ping He, Jin-Ping Xiong, Yu-Ming Tang, Yu Zuo
Journal of Electrochemistry
The failure process of inorganic zinc-rich/micaceous iron oxide epoxy/aliphatic polyurethane composite coatings in 3.5% NaCl solution under ultraviolet radiation(UV) was studied with Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS).The result shows that the protective property of the coating was enhanced with the increase of total coating thickness, but the degree of improvement reduced gradully as the coating thickness increased. The shielding effect of the micaceous iron oxide epoxy was mainly reflected in the initial period of the service process, while in later period the coating performance largely depended on the zinc-rich primer. The change of the water uptake in the composite coating presented a 'three-stage' characteristic. The thinner the …

Effect Of Cldh On Rebar Corrosion Behavior In Chloride Contaminated Neutral Pore Solutions, Yu-Ming Tang, Le Niu, Yu Zuo
Journal of Electrochemistry
he effect of calcined LDH-MgAl-CO3 on rebar corrosion behavior in chloride ion contaminated neutral concrete pore solutions was investigated in this paper.Corrosion potentials of rebars in pore solutions after treatment with CLDH were higher than before treatment.According to polarization tests, passivated region of rebars in pore solutions after treatment with CLDH was found apparently instead of activation.EIS tests showed that CLDH made the impedance of specimens increase. The measurements of pH and chloride ion concentration after treatment indicated that / of pore solutions decreased by 4~5 magnitude orders.

The Hopf-Laplace Equation, Jan Cristina, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Leonid V. Kovalev, Jani Onninen
Mathematics - All Scholarship
The central theme in this paper is the Hopf-Laplace equation, which represents stationary solutions with respect to the inner variation of the Dirichlet integral. Among such solutions are harmonic maps. Nevertheless, minimization of the Dirichlet energy among homeomorphisms often leads to nonharmonic solutions. We investigate the Hopf-Laplace equation for a certain class of topologically well behaved mappings which are almost homeomorphisms, called Hopf deformations. We establish Lipschitz continuity of Hopf deformations, the best possible regularity one can get. Thus in particular we show that the minimal-energy deformations are Lipschitz continuous, a result of considerable interest in the theory of minimal …

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of …

We will explore the computational complexity of satisfying certain sets of neighborhood conditions in graphs with various properties. More precisely, fix a radius $\rho$ and let $N(G)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of $\rho$-neighborhoods of vertices of $G$ where $G$ is a graph whose vertices are colored (not necessarily properly) by colors from a fixed finite palette. The root of the neighborhood will be the unique vertex at the "center" of the graph. Given a set S of colored graphs with a unique root, when is there a graph G with N (G) = S? Or N (G) ⊂ …
Minimum Description Length And Empirical Bayes Methods Of Identifying Snps Associated With Disease, Ye Yang, David R. Bickel
Minimum Description Length And Empirical Bayes Methods Of Identifying Snps Associated With Disease, Ye Yang, David R. Bickel
COBRA Preprint Series
The goal of determining which of hundreds of thousands of SNPs are associated with disease poses one of the most challenging multiple testing problems. Using the empirical Bayes approach, the local false discovery rate (LFDR) estimated using popular semiparametric models has enjoyed success in simultaneous inference. However, the estimated LFDR can be biased because the semiparametric approach tends to overestimate the proportion of the non-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). One of the negative consequences is that, like conventional p-values, such LFDR estimates cannot quantify the amount of information in the data that favors the null hypothesis of no disease-association.

We have measured the 3He(e, e', pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs by using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum ptot. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0:5 GeV / c, the ratio is very small at low ptot and rises to approximately 0.5 at large ptot. This …

Resistive Mhd Reconstruction Of Two-Dimensional Coherent Structures In Space, W L. Teh, B U. Sonnerup, J Birn, R E. Denton
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a reconstruction technique to solve the steady resistive MHD equations in two dimensions with initial inputs of field and plasma data from a single space- craft as it passes through a coherent structure in space. At least two components of directly measured electric fields (the spacecraft spin-plane components) are required for the reconstruction, to produce two-dimensional (2-D) field and plasma maps of the cross section of the structure. For con- venience, the resistivity tensor η is assumed diagonal in the reconstruction coordinates, which allows its values to be es- timated from Ohm’s law, E+v×B=η·j. In the present paper, …
On The Construction Of Explicit Solutions To The Matrix Equation X2ax = Axa, Aihua Li, Edward Mosteig
On The Construction Of Explicit Solutions To The Matrix Equation X2ax = Axa, Aihua Li, Edward Mosteig
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In a previous article by Aihua Li and Duane Randall, the existence of solutions to certain matrix equations is demonstrated via nonconstructive methods. A recurring example appears in that work, namely the matrix equation AXA = X2AX, where A is a fixed, square matrix with real entries and X is an unknown square matrix. In this paper, the solution space is explicitly constructed for all 2×2 complex matrices using Gröbner basis techniques. When A is a 2×2 matrix, the equation AXA = X2AX is equivalent to a system of four polynomial equations. The solution space then is the variety defined …
Potential Barrier Effects In Two-Photon Ionization Processes, Liang-Wen Pi, Anthony F. Starace
Potential Barrier Effects In Two-Photon Ionization Processes, Liang-Wen Pi, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Potential barriers in the effective radial potential experienced by a photoexcited electron are shown to result in dramatic, resonancelike effects in two-photon ionization processes. In a two-photon ionization process, such potential barriers may affect not only the final state of the electron (as in ordinary photoionization), but also the intermediate-state electron wave packet corresponding to the absorption of one photon. We illustrate these effects for the generalized two-photon cross sections for ionization of Ar and Xe within a single-active-electron, central-potential model.

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Learning (TMLL) has been proposed as a general estimation methodology that can, in particular, be applied to draw causal inferences based on marginal structural modeling with observational data using either a point treatment approach (all confounders are assumed not to be affected by the exposure(s) of interest) or a longitudinal data approach (some confounders may be affected by one of the exposures of interest). While formal development of TMLL has included road maps for applications in longitudinal data approaches, real-life implementations have been restricted to studies based on a point treatment approach. In this article, we illustrate …

Stable Isotopes Of Fossil Teeth Corroborate Key General Circulation Model Predictions For The Last Glacial Maximum In North America, Matthew J. Kohn, Moriah Mckay
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Oxygen isotope data provide a key test of general circulation models (GCMs) for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in North America, which have otherwise proved difficult to validate. High δ18O pedogenic carbonates in central Wyoming have been interpreted to indicate increased summer precipitation sourced from the Gulf of Mexico. Here we show that tooth enamel δ18O of large mammals, which is strongly correlated with local water and precipitation δ18O, is lower during the LGM in Wyoming, not higher. Similar data from Texas, California, Florida and Arizona indicate higher δ18O values than in the Holocene, which is also predicted by GCMs. …

A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, Duncan Brown, J. Abadie
Physics - All Scholarship
The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasi-normal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two co-located Hanford gravitational wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a …

Recent Uplift Of The Burica Peninsula, Panama And Costa Rica, Recorded By Marine Terraces, Daniel Davidson
Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Honors Theses
Deformation and uplift of the Burica Peninsula along the Panama-Costa Rica border results from eastward migration of the Panama Triple Junction (PTJ); the boundary between three tectonic plates. As the triple junction migrates to the southeast at ~55 mm/yr along the Middle America Trench (MAT), the Panama Fracture Zone (PFZ), separating the Cocos and Nazca plates, subducts under the Panama microplate. Differences in the thickness of the plates across the PFZ, as well as the rate and angle of subduction between the Cocos and Nazca plates, cause the Panama microplate to step up and over the Cocos plate. A flight …

Inferential Methods For High-Throughput Methylation Data, Maria Capparuccini
Theses and Dissertations
The role of abnormal DNA methylation in the progression of disease is a growing area of research that relies upon the establishment of sound statistical methods. The common method for declaring there is differential methylation between two groups at a given CpG site, as summarized by the difference between proportions methylated db=b1-b2, has been through use of a Filtered Two Sample t-test, using the recommended filter of 0.17 (Bibikova et al., 2006b). In this dissertation, we performed a re-analysis of the data used in recommending the threshold by fitting a mixed-effects ANOVA model. It was determined that the 0.17 filter …

Testing Mechanisms Of Subduction Zone Segmentation And Seismogenesis With Slip Distributions From Recent Andean Earthquakes, John P. Loveless, M. E. Pritchard, K. Kukowski
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
A long-standing goal of subduction zone earthquake studies is to determine whether or not there are physical processes that control seismogenesis and the along-strike segmentation of the megathrust. Studies of individual earthquakes and global compilations of earthquakes find favorable comparison between coseismic interplate slip distributions and several different long-lived forearc characteristics, such as bathymetry, coastline morphology, crustal structure, and interplate frictional properties, but no single explanation seems to govern the location and slip distribution of all earthquakes. One possible reason for the lack of a unifying explanation is that the inferred earthquake parameters, most importantly the slip distribution, calculated in …
