Temperature And Electric Field Dependence Of Conduction In Low-Density Polyethylene, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson Oct 2008

Temperature And Electric Field Dependence Of Conduction In Low-Density Polyethylene, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson

All Physics Faculty Publications

A traditional constant voltage conductivity test method was used to measure how the conductivity of highly insulating low-density polyethylene (LDPE) polymer films depends on applied electric field, repeated and prolonged electric field exposure, and sample temperature. The strength of the applied voltage was varied to determine the electric field dependence. At low electric field, the resistivity was measured from cryogenic temperatures to well above the glass transition temperature. Comparisons were made with a variety of models of the conduction mechanisms common in insulators, including transient polarization and diffusion and steady-state thermally activated hopping conductivity and variable range hopping conductivity, to …

Low-Fluence Electron Yields Of Highly Insulating Materials, Ryan Hoffmann, Jr Dennison, Clint D. Thomson, Jennifer Albretson Oct 2008

Low-Fluence Electron Yields Of Highly Insulating Materials, Ryan Hoffmann, Jr Dennison, Clint D. Thomson, Jennifer Albretson

Journal Articles

Electron-induced electron yields of high-resistivity, high-yield materials - ceramic polycrystalline aluminum oxide and the polymer polyimide (Kapton HN), - were made by using a low-fluence, pulsed incident electron beam and charge neutralization electron source to minimize charge accumulation. Large changes in energy-dependent total yield curves and yield decay curves were observed, even for incident electron fluences of <3 fC/mm2. The evolution of the electron yield as charge accumulates in the material is modeled in terms of electron re-capture based on an extended Chung-Everhart model of the electron emission spectrum. This model is used to explain anomalies measured in highly insulating, …

Herding Cats: Governance Models For The Care And Feeding Of Enterprise Resources Planning Systems In Higher Education Institutions, Paula Russell Oct 2008

Herding Cats: Governance Models For The Care And Feeding Of Enterprise Resources Planning Systems In Higher Education Institutions, Paula Russell

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

Enterprise Resources Planning systems (ERPs) have revolutionized the manner in which higher education institutions manage its resources. ERPs provide the mechanism to aggregate disparate data across the institution and deliver reports and facilitate analysis on the institution as a whole. ERPs provide a single source of truth for institutional data enabling an institution-wide view of expenditures and are powerful tool for decision support. Institutions choosing to invest in implementing ERPs will enter into a long term relationship with continual maintenance of the systems. Key to the success of maintaining ERPs effectively is the governance model an institution adopts for managing …

Topological Dynamics Of Two-Piece Eventually Expanding Maps, Youngna Choi Oct 2008

Topological Dynamics Of Two-Piece Eventually Expanding Maps, Youngna Choi

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this work we show that two-piece eventually expanding maps have the same topological dynamics as two-piece expanding maps. A two-piece eventually expanding map possesses an invariant set that is either a topological attractor or can be perturbed to become one.

What The Fish Is Going On Here? Are Regulations Being Followed At The Ver-O-Peso Market In Belém, Para?, Neil Thompson Oct 2008

What The Fish Is Going On Here? Are Regulations Being Followed At The Ver-O-Peso Market In Belém, Para?, Neil Thompson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the commercialization of the amazonian fishery in the early 1970´s there have been major problems with enforcement of minimum capture length laws and regulations. It has been well documented with species such as tambaqui (Collosum macroponum) and mapara (Hypopthalamus edentates) that juveniles and pre-adults are being targeted by fishermen. This has led to a situation where most of the individuals present in fish markets are undersized and illegal according to IBAMA regulations. The majority of the research done on undersized illegal market fish has focused on markets in Manaus, Tefé and Santarem. This study seeks to find out if …

An Ontology-Driven Semantic Mash-Up Of Gene And Biological Pathway Information: Application To The Domain Of Nicotine Dependence, Satya S. Sahoo, Olivier Bodenreider, Joni L. Rutter, Karen J. Skinner, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Objectives: This paper illustrates how Semantic Web technologies (especially RDF, OWL, and SPARQL) can support information integration and make it easy to create semantic mashups (semantically integrated resources). In the context of understanding the genetic basis of nicotine dependence, we integrate gene and pathway information and show how three complex biological queries can be answered by the integrated knowledge base.

Methods: We use an ontology-driven approach to integrate two gene resources (Entrez Gene and HomoloGene) and three pathway resources (KEGG, Reactome and BioCyc), for five organisms, including humans. We created the Entrez Knowledge Model (EKoM), an information model in OWL …

Metal Modulation Epitaxy Growth For Extremely High Hole Concentrations Above 10(19) Cm(-3) In Gan, Gon Namkoong, Elaissa Trybus, Kyung Kuen Lee, Michael Moseley, W. Alan Doolittle, David C. Look Oct 2008

Metal Modulation Epitaxy Growth For Extremely High Hole Concentrations Above 10(19) Cm(-3) In Gan, Gon Namkoong, Elaissa Trybus, Kyung Kuen Lee, Michael Moseley, W. Alan Doolittle, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The free hole carriers in GaN have been limited to concentrations in the low 1018 cm−3 range due to the deep activation energy, lower solubility, and compensation from defects, therefore, limiting doping efficiency to about 1%. Herein, we report an enhanced doping efficiency up to ∼ 10% in GaN by a periodic doping, metal modulation epitaxy growth technique. The hole concentrations grown by periodically modulating Ga atoms and Mg dopants were over ∼ 1.5×1019 cm−3.

Study Of A Self-Assessment System For The Ecotourism Group In Curuçá: Accounting For Tourist Opinions While Maintaining Initial Goals, Karina Hope Costa Oct 2008

Study Of A Self-Assessment System For The Ecotourism Group In Curuçá: Accounting For Tourist Opinions While Maintaining Initial Goals, Karina Hope Costa

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Community-based ecotourism can be a potential tool to both promote empowerment and conservation of the local environment. One of the main goals of community-based ecotourism is to ensure that participating communities take an active role in the development and management of ecotourism activities. One way to measure if their goals are being reached is through a system of assessment, through which an ecotourism community will be able to account for the opinions of the tourist, the guide operators, and the local community. The general objective of this paper is to determine how a community-based ecotourism group can account for the …

An Exploration Of Tablet-Based Presentation Systems And Learning Styles, Ngan T. Phan Oct 2008

An Exploration Of Tablet-Based Presentation Systems And Learning Styles, Ngan T. Phan

Master's Theses

Learning in the classroom can occur as a combination of students' personal effort to study class material, the instructor's attempt to present class material, and the interaction that takes place between instructor and students. In a more traditional setting, instructors can lecture by writing notes on a chalkboard or a whiteboard. If instructors want to display prepared lecture slides, they can use the overhead projector and write additional notes on top of these overhead transparencies. With many technological advances, various researchers are advocating towards integration between technology and learning. With the advent of tablet PCs, researchers recognize the potential usefulness …

Blac: Revoking Repeatedly Misbehaving Anonymous Users Without Relying On Ttps, Patrick P. Tsang, Man Ho Au, Apu Kapadia, Sean W. Smith Oct 2008

Blac: Revoking Repeatedly Misbehaving Anonymous Users Without Relying On Ttps, Patrick P. Tsang, Man Ho Au, Apu Kapadia, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

Several credential systems have been proposed in which users can authenticate to service providers anonymously. Since anonymity can give users the license to misbehave, some variants allow the selective deanonymization (or linking) of misbehaving users upon a complaint to a trusted third party (TTP). The ability of the TTP to revoke a user's privacy at any time, however, is too strong a punishment for misbehavior. To limit the scope of deanonymization, systems have been proposed in which users are deanonymized if they authenticate ``too many times,'' such as ``double spending'' with electronic cash. While useful in some applications, it is …

Effect Of A Water Treatment Bmp On Nutrient Spiraling And Leaf Litter Breakdown In An Urban Stream, Megan Leclair Wheeler Oct 2008

Effect Of A Water Treatment Bmp On Nutrient Spiraling And Leaf Litter Breakdown In An Urban Stream, Megan Leclair Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

Alterations to stream conditions caused by urbanization can compromise valuable ecosystem services, such as nutrient attenuation and carbon processing. A best management practice (BMP) water facility was installed to restore an impaired urban stream in Columbus, GA. This study was conducted to determine the effect of this BMP on nutrient spiraling and leaf litter decomposition in a 2 km stretch of Weracoba Creek. I hypothesized the BMP would (1) reduce leaf mass loss over time and (2) interfere with nutrient concentrations and uptake lengths. I characterized leaf litter decomposition using tulip tree leaves {Liriodendron tulipifera) in 1mm mesh bags deployed …

Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone Oct 2008

Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Schists from two mylonitic localities in the footwall of a low-angle normal fault in the eastern Alps record different degrees of embrittlement during exhumation, depending on the extent to which fluid–rock reactions proceeded. At one site, graphitic schists preserve textural evidence for two metamorphic reactions that modified XCO2XCO2 and/or fluid volume: (1) reaction between graphite and aqueous fluid that increased XCO2XCO2 without changing the molar amount of fluid, and (2) replacement of titanite by rutile, calcite, and quartz. The latter reaction involved net consumption of increasingly CO2-rich fluid. Areas where the first reaction proceeded are associated with abundant Mode I …

Scalable Multicast Routing For Ad Hoc Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala Oct 2008

Scalable Multicast Routing For Ad Hoc Networks, Manoj Pandey, Daniel Zappala

Faculty Publications

Routing in a mobile ad hoc network is challenging because nodes can move at any time, invalidating a previously-discovered route. Multicast routing is even more challenging, because a source needs to maintain a route to potentially many group members simultaneously. Providing scalable solutions to this problem typically requires building a hierarchy or an overlay network to reduce the cost of route discovery and maintenance. In this paper, we show that a much simpler alternative is possible, by using source specific semantics and relying on the unicast routing protocol to find all routes. This separation of concerns enables the multicast routing …

Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov Oct 2008

Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

An important task of the brain is to represent the outside world. It is unclear how the brain may do this, however, as it can only rely on neural responses and has no independent access to external stimuli in order to ‘‘decode’’ what those responses mean. We investigate what can be learned about a space of stimuli using only the action potentials (spikes) of cells with stereotyped—but unknown—receptive fields. Using hippocampal place cells as a model system, we show that one can (1) extract global features of the environment and (2) construct an accurate representation of space, up to an …

North Pacific Right Whale (Eubalaena Japonica) Seasonal And Diel Calling Patterns From Long-Term Acoustic Recordings In The Southeastern Bering Sea, 2000–2006, Lisa Munger, Sean Wiggins, Sue Moore, John Hildebrand

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We assessed North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica) seasonal and daily calling patterns in the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) using long-term hydrophone recordings from October 2000 through January 2006. We detected right whale calls on the SEBS middle shelf (<100 m depth) as early as May, intermittently throughout summer and fall, and as late as December. Calls also were detected on one day in June 2005 on the SEBS slope (>1,000 m), but were not detected near Kodiak Island from April to August 2003. In months with calls, detections occurred on more days in July–October (≥6 d/mo), than from May to June or November to December (≤3 d/mo). Calls were clustered in time and were usually detected on 1–3 consecutive days with a median interval of 6.5 d …
