Fisheries Occasional Publication No.72 - Western Rock Lobster Ecological Effects Of Fishing Research Plan., Rhys Brown
Fisheries Occasional Publications
The commercial West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery (WCRLF) targets the western rock lobster (WRL), Panulirus cygnus, averaging approximately 10,000 tonnes of lobsters each year. Currently approximately 450 to 500 boats operate in the Fishery in waters ranging from 5 m to 200 m depth adjacent to the Western Australian coast and stretching from Cape Leeuwin in the south to Shark Bay in the north. The Fishery is managed by the Department of Fisheries (DoF) in Western Australia, using an input control system designed to constrain exploitation/fishing effort and deliver sustainable catches. The annual value of the catch is estimated at …

Artificial perturbations of borehole water levels, known as slug tests, are a useful means of characterizing the glacier hydrologic system. Slug tests were performed on Bench Glacier, Alaska, in 21 boreholes over three field seasons during the transition from a winter to a summer drainage mode. Fifty-four slug tests were conducted, with water level monitoring in up to five boreholes adjacent to the slugged borehole. Seven of the slug tests were performed in conjunction with dye dispersion tests to identify water pathways within the slugged borehole following perturbation. Nearly 60% of monitored adjacent boreholes showed a hydraulic connection to the …

Josephson Physics Mediated By The Mott Insulating Phase, Smitha Vishveshwara, Courtney Lannert
Physics: Faculty Publications
We investigate the static and dynamic properties of bosonic lattice systems in which condensed and Mott insulating phases coexist due to the presence of a spatially varying potential. We formulate a description of these inhomogeneous systems and calculate the bulk energy at and near equilibrium. We derive the explicit form of the Josephson coupling between disjoint superfluid regions separated by Mott insulating regions. We obtain detailed estimates for the case of alternating superfluid and Mott insulating spherical shells in a radially symmetric parabolically confined cold atom system.
Modeling Natural Resources Scarcity And Proverty Effects On Fertility In Honduras, Nepal, And Tanzania, Ayoub Shaban Ayoub
Modeling Natural Resources Scarcity And Proverty Effects On Fertility In Honduras, Nepal, And Tanzania, Ayoub Shaban Ayoub
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation examines whether the vicious circle theory applies in three developing countries characterized by high population growth. According to the vicious circle theory, natural resource scarcity coupled with poverty leads to population growth via positive effects on fertility particularly in rural areas of developing countries. Population growth then leads to a further increase in natural resource scarcity, creating a "feedback loop." This is the first study to use micro-level data to test and control for endogeneity using a two-stage Probit model (IVPROBIT). The existing literature has largely failed to address endogeneity in the relationship between natural resource scarcity and …

Optimal Cutpoint Estimation With Censored Data, Mithat Gonen, Camelia Sima
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We consider the problem of selecting an optimal cutpoint for a continuous marker when the outcome of interest is subject to right censoring. Maximal chi square methods and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves-based methods are commonly-used when the outcome is binary. In this article we show that selecting the cutpoint that maximizes the concordance, a metric similar to the area under an ROC curve, is equivalent to maximizing the Youden index, a popular criterion when the ROC curve is used to choose a threshold. We use this as a basis for proposing maximal concordance as a metric to use with …

Removal Of Benzaldehyde From Methanol Using Alkoxyamine Functionalized Silica Gel, Dino Sulejmanovic, Carrie Jo Pruitt, Eric Conte, Hasan Palandoken, Shing-Yi Suen
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Alkoxyamines (RONH2) react readily with aldehydes and ketones to form stable oxime ethers, and, thus are expected to be excellent scavengers of these compounds. We installed alkoxyamines on silica gel surface to remove benzaldehyde from methanol. Silica gel was immersed in H2O2/H2SO4 solution to activate the surface. Activated silica gel was then reacted with 3-chloropropyltrichlorosilane. Displacement of the chloride with N-hydroxyphthalimide and subsequent treatment with hydrazine provided alkoxyamines on the surface of silica gel. The resulting silica gel surface with alkoxyamine functional groups was immersed in a 100 ppm benzaldehyde solution …

To examine the effects of π-stacking interactions between aromatic amino acid side chains and adenine bearing ligands in crystalline protein structures, 26 toluene/(N9-methyl) adenine model configurations have been constructed from protein/ligand crystal structures. Full geometry optimizations with the MP2 method cause the 26 crystal structures to collapse to six unique structures. The complete basis set (CBS) limit of the CCSD(T) interaction energies has been determined for all 32 structures by combining explicitly correlated MP2-R12 computations with a correction for higher-order correlation effects from CCSD(T) calculations. The CCSD(T) CBS limit interaction energies of the 26 crystal structures range from -3.19 to …

Modeling Of Spin Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor: A Nonequilibrium Green’S Function Approach With Spin Relaxation, Tony Low, Mark Lundstrom, Dmitri Nikonov
Birck and NCN Publications
A spin metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (spin MOSFET), which combines a Schottky-barrier MOSFET with ferromagnetic source and drain contacts, is a promising device for spintronic logic. Previous simulation studies predict that this device should display a very high magnetoresistance (MR) ratio (between the cases of parallel and antiparallel magnetizations) for the case of half-metal ferromagnets (HMF). We use the nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism to describe tunneling and carrier transport in this device and to incorporate spin relaxation at the HMF-semiconductor interfaces. Spin relaxation at interfaces results in nonideal spin injection. Minority spin currents arise and dominate the leakage current for antiparallel …

Dormancy of buds is a critical developmental process that allows perennial plants to survive extreme seasonal variations in climate. Dormancy transitions in underground crown buds of the model herbaceous perennial weed leafy spurge were investigated using a 23 K element cDNA microarray. These data represent the first large-scale transcriptome analysis of dormancy in underground buds of an herbaceous perennial species. Crown buds collected monthly from August through December, over a five year period, were used to monitor the changes in the transcriptome during dormancy transitions.
Change-Point Problem And Regression: An Annotated Bibliography, Ahmad Khodadadi, Masoud Asgharian
Change-Point Problem And Regression: An Annotated Bibliography, Ahmad Khodadadi, Masoud Asgharian
COBRA Preprint Series
The problems of identifying changes at unknown times and of estimating the location of changes in stochastic processes are referred to as "the change-point problem" or, in the Eastern literature, as "disorder".
The change-point problem, first introduced in the quality control context, has since developed into a fundamental problem in the areas of statistical control theory, stationarity of a stochastic process, estimation of the current position of a time series, testing and estimation of change in the patterns of a regression model, and most recently in the comparison and matching of DNA sequences in microarray data analysis.
Numerous methodological approaches …

The Effects Of A Networked Data Acquisition System On Student Learning In General Chemistry Laboratories, Stuart C. Burris, Les L. Pesterfield, Darwin Dahl, Hasan Palandoken, Jacqueline Pope-Tarrence
Chemistry and Biochemistry
We have recently incorporated a networked data acquisition and analysis system into in our second semester general chemistry laboratories. Our investigation team has conducted a study to evaluate the effects of the networked data acquisition system on student performance on a Beer's Law laboratory. We focused on two specific phenomena: the effect of the networked data acquisition system on 1) student learning of specific content material and 2) student comfort level with laboratory work and data analysis. The study involved a networked data acquisition group (employing a UV-Vis spectrometer and colorimeters) and a control group (employing traditional, single wavelength spectrometers). …

Antiphase domains are seen in single crystal gamma lithium aluminate (gamma-LiAlO2) with 16.7 nm periodicity in the <110> direction. Alternate domains have a (1/2) [001] shift. Beta phase lithium aluminate (beta-LiAlO2) is seen to form on the surface of the as-received wafers with an epitaxial strain limited relationship with the bulk gamma phase. The orthorhombic beta phase aligns with the a and b axes (0.528 and 0.630 nm) matching with the tetragonal gamma phase's a and c axes (0.5168 and 0.6268 nm). The gamma and beta phases are seen to have different etch rates. The beta phase converts back to the …110>

Investigating The Margins Of Pleistocene Lake Deposits With High-Resolution Seismic Reflection In Pilot Valley, Utah, John V. South
Theses and Dissertations
A vast area of the northeastern Great Basin of the western USA was inundated by a succession of Plio-Pleistocene lakes, including Lake Bonneville (28 ka to 12 ka). The Pilot Valley playa, located just east of the Utah-Nevada border near Wendover, Utah, within the eastern Basin and Range Province, represents an 8 to 16 km wide and ~50 km long remnant of these lakes. The playa corresponds to the upper surface of a closed basin that is delimited by two mountain ranges, which are mantled by recent alluvial fans over which the playa sediments have prograded. In order to investigate …

Background: The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) is one of the U.S. National Institutes of Health Roadmap for Medical Research. Primary interests of the HMP include the distinctiveness of different gut microbiomes, the factors influencing microbiome diversity, and the functional redundancies of the members of human microbiotas. In this present work, we contribute to these interests by characterizing two extinct human microbiotas.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We examine two paleofecal samples originating from cave deposits in Durango Mexico and dating to approximately 1300 years ago. Contamination control is a serious issue in ancient DNA research; we use a novel approach to control contamination. …
Spectral Time Moment Analysis Of Microgel Deswelling: Effect Of The Heating Rate, Kiril A. Streletzky, John T. Mckenna
Spectral Time Moment Analysis Of Microgel Deswelling: Effect Of The Heating Rate, Kiril A. Streletzky, John T. Mckenna
Physics Faculty Publications
Microgel nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous solutions of neutral polymer hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) through the self-association of amphiphilic HPC molecules and the subsequent cross linking at room temperature. Dynamic Light Scattering was used to study the transport properties of HPC microgels below and above the volume phase transition. Highly nonexponential, multimodal microgel spectra were observed and successfully analyzed by spectral time moment analysis. This article expands earlier results and focuses on the effect of the heating rate on microgel deswelling. During the fast heating two identified microgel modes with apparent hydrodynamic radii (RH) of 25–30 nm and 400–650 nm collapse into …

Redshifted Absorption At He I Λ10830 As A Probe Of The Accretion Geometry Of T Tauri Stars, William Fischer, John Kwan, Suzan Edwards, Lynne A. Hillenbrand
Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We probe the geometry of magnetospheric accretion in classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) by modeling red absorption at He I λ10830 via scattering of the stellar and veiling continua. Under the assumptions that the accretion flow is an azimuthally symmetric dipole and helium is sufficiently optically thick that all incident 1 μm radiation is scattered, we illustrate the sensitivity of He I λ10830 red absorption to both the size of the magnetosphere and the filling factor of the hot accretion shock. We compare model profiles to those observed in 21 CTTSs with subcontinuum redshifted absorption at He I λ10830 and …

Phase Diagram Of Su(2) With 2 Flavors Of Dynamical Adjoint Quarks, Simon Catterall, Joel Giedt, Francesco Sannino, Joe Schneible
Physics - All Scholarship
We report on numerical simulations of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of light dynamical quarks in the adjoint of the gauge group. The dynamics of this theory is thought to be very different from QCD -- the theory exhibiting conformal or near conformal behavior in the infrared. We make a high resolution survey of the phase diagram of this model in the plane of the bare coupling and quark mass on lattices of size 8^3 \times 16. Our simulations reveal a line of first order phase transitions extending from beta=0 to beta=beta_c \sim 2.0. For beta > beta_c the …

Smartstore: A New Metadata Organization Paradigm With Metadata Semantic-Awareness For Next-Generation File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng, Lei Tian
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Existing data storage systems based on hierarchical directory tree do not meet scalability and functionality requirements for exponentially growing datasets and increasingly complex metadata queries in large-scale file systems with billions of files and Exabytes of data. This paper proposes a novel decentralized semantic-aware metadata organization, called SmartStore, which exploits metadata semantics of files to judiciously aggregate correlated files into semantic-aware groups by using information retrieval tools. The decentralized design of SmartStore can improve system scalability and reduce query latency for both complex queries (including range and top-k queries), which is helpful to construct semantic-aware caching, and conventional filename-based point …

Ideas: An Identity-Based Security Architecture For Large-Scale And High-Performance Storage Systems, Zhongying Niu, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang
School of Computing: Technical Reports
We develop IDEAS, an identity-based security architecture for large-scale and high-performance storage systems, designed to improve security, convenience and total cost of access control by merging identity management with access control in these systems. IDEAS authenticates users at each I/O node by using a single-identity certificate without the service of a centralized security server and enforces access control mechanism by using an object-based access control (OBAC) model, which is designed to address the complexity and scalability issue of security administration in large-scale storage systems. We also discuss the issue of how to identify and authenticate a large number of users …

Uv-Vis Investigations On Ion Beam Irradiated Polycarbonate, Mircea Chipara, Dorina M. Chipara
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
UV-VIS investigations on polycarbonate irradiated with accelerated U ions are reported. The experimental data are consistent with the decrease of the energy gap due to irradiation and indicate the formation of isolated conjugated structures. The relatively weak decrease of the energy gap and the shape of the electron spin resonance lines indicate that the conjugated structures are isolated within the polymeric matrix. published: 8 November, 2008.

Zircon and monazite from granitic sheets and dikes in the Monashee complex, Canadian Cordillera, were investigated to determine whether igneous crystallization occurred at 1.9 Ga or 50 Ma with 1.9 Ga inherited zircon and monazite. Four of the five samples are weakly deformed to undeformed, despite occurring in a gneiss dome at the structurally deepest exposed level of the orogen that elsewhere was strongly deformed and partly melted at 50 Ma. Based on U-(Th)-Pb dates from zircon and monazite, field relationships, and mineral composition and zoning, we conclude that the granitic rocks crystallized at 1.9 Ga and were metamorphosed at …
Photocycloaddition Of Allenes, Crystal Ward
Photocycloaddition Of Allenes, Crystal Ward
Theses and Dissertations
For the past ten years the Fleming research group has been involved in the research of allene compounds. We have explored the synthesis of allenes as well as several reactions involving allenes, such as oxidation and nitrene addition. Recently, we have explored the synthesis and photochemistry of allenic alcohols tethered to silicon. There are literature examples using allenes in synthesis, but very few examples exist using allenes in photochemical cycloaddition reactions. We have found that a diisopropylallenyloxy(cinnamyloxy)silane derivative undergoes [2+2] photochemical cycloaddition to produce a cyclobutylsilane product when irradiated for 60-75 minutes.

We present a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry (AFB) in pp → Z/γ* +X → e+e- + X events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 1.1 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. AFB is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the electron-positron pair, and found to be consistent with the standard model prediction. We use the AFB measurement to extract the effective weak mixing angle sin2ӨWeff = 0.2326 ± 0.0018 (stat) ± 0.0006 (syst).

We report an experimental investigation of time dependent anisotropic light scattering by an aqueous suspension of tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (∼6nm) under the ON-OFF transient of an external dc magnetic field. The study employs the synchronized recording and measurement of the two magnetic-field-induced light-scattering patterns produced by two identical orthogonal He-Ne laser beams passing through the ferrofluid sample and propagating parallel and perpendicular to the applied field, respectively. From these patterns, we extract the time dependence of the induced optical anisotropy, which provides a measure of the characteristic time scale and kinematic response for field-induced …

A Simple Index Of Smoking, Abhaya Indrayan Dr., Rajeev Kumar Mr., Shridhar Dwivedi Dr.
COBRA Preprint Series
Background: Cigarette smoking is implicated in a large number of diseases and other adverse health conditions. Among the dimensions of smoking are number of cigarettes smoked per day, duration of smoking, passive smoking, smoking of filter cigarettes, age at start, and duration elapsed since quitting by ex-smokers. The practice so far is to study most of these separately. We develop a simple index that integrates these dimensions of smoking into a single metric, and suggest that this index be developed further. Method: The index is developed under a series of natural assumptions. Broadly, these are (i) the burden of smoking …
