Burial Of Terrestrial Organic Matter In Marine Sediments: A Re-Assessment, David J. Burdige

Calculations based on recent observations indicate that approximately one third of the organic matter presently being buried in marine sediments may be of terrestrial origin, with the majority of this terrestrial organic matter (TOM) burial occurring in muddy, deltaic sediments. These calculations further suggest that the remineralization of terrestrial organic matter in the oceans is also much less efficient than that of marine organic matter. These two underappreciated observations have important implications in terms of our understanding of the controls on the global carbon cycle. From a paleoceanographic perspective, the results presented here also suggest that changes in TOM burial …

High-Energy Effective Action From Scattering Of Qcd Shock Waves, Ian Balitsky

At high energies, the relevant degrees of freedom are Wilson lines—infinite gauge links ordered along straight lines collinear to the velocities of colliding particles. The effective action for these Wilson lines is determined by the scattering of QCD shock waves. I develop the symmetric expansion of the effective action in powers of strength of one of the shock waves and calculate the leading term of the series. The corresponding first-order effective action, symmetric with respect to projectile and target, includes both up and down fan diagrams and pomeron loops.

Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction 𝛾⃗p → p π+π- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data are compared with the results of various phenomenological model calculations, and show that these models currently do not …

We perform a global analysis of all available spin-dependent proton structure function data, covering a large range of Q2, 1 ⩽ Q2 ⩽ 30 GeV2, and calculate the lowest moment of the g1 structure function as a function of Q2. From the Q2 dependence of the lowest moment we extract matrix elements of twist-4 operators, and determine the color electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton to be XE= 0.026 ± 0.015(stat) ± 0.0210.024 (sys) and XB= -0.013 ∓ 0.007(stat) ∓ 0.010 0.012(sys), respectively.

The levitation of objects above a microwave horn is demonstrated. High-power microwave pulses generate a low-temperature, diffuse plasma on the surface of the horn window. The thermal effect of the surface plasma brings about a localized increase in the pressure and results in a vertical flow of air, thus levitating the object.

The longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section for the ep e′ 0 reaction were measured in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS detector. The data were taken with a 4.247 GeV electron beam and were analyzed in a range of xB from 0.2 to 0.6 and of Q2 from 1.5 to 3.0 GeV2. The data are compared to a Regge model based on effective hadronic degrees of freedom and to a calculation based on Generalized Parton Distributions. We report on the first measurement of exclusive Ξ-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in 𝛾p → K+K+Ξ- for 3.2 < E𝛾 < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(𝛾,K+K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground state Ξ-(1321)1/2+ and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We also have strong evidence for the first excited state Ξ-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Ξ's. Inspired by recent measurements with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, we perform a self-consistent analysis of world data on the proton structure function g1 in the range 0.17 < Q2 < 30 (GeV/c)2. We compute for the first time low-order moments of g, and study their evolution from small to large values of Q2. The analysis includes the latest data on both the unpolarized inclusive cross sections and the ratio R = σ LT from Jefferson Lab, as well as a new model for the transverse asymmetry A2 in the resonance region. The mathematical homogenization and corrector theory relevant to prestressed heterogeneous materials in the linear-elastic regime is discussed. A suitable corrector theory is derived to reconstruct the local strain field inside the composite. Based on this theory, we develop an inexpensive numerical method for multi scale strain analysis within a prestressed heterogeneous material. The theory also provides a characterization of the macroscopic strength domain. The strength domain places constraints on the homogenized strain field which guarantee that the actual strain in the heterogeneous material lies inside the strength domain of each material participating in the structure.

This dissertation addressed comparative studies of sperm cryopreservation of diploid and tetraploid Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, with an emphasis on the development of standardized and optimized protocols. This includes comparative ultrastructural differences between sperm from diploid and tetraploid oysters, methods for the rapid estimation of sperm concentration, optimization of cryopreservation, and evaluation of the mechanisms for sperm agglutination (formation of clumps or elongated "noodles") in thawed samples. In this dissertation we study two related important issues in control theory: invariance of dynamical systems and Hamilton-Jacobi theory associated with optimal control theory. Given a control system modelled as a differential inclusion, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong invariance property of the system when the dynamic satisfies a dissipative Lipschitz condition. We show that when the dynamic is almost upper semicontinuous and satisfies the dissipative Lipschitz property, these conditions can be expressed in terms of approximate Hamilton-Jacobi inequalities, which subsumes the classic infinitesimal characterization of strongly invariant systems given under the Lipschitz assumtion. A study of the effects of system boundaries on bistable front propagation in nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion systems is presented. Two model partial differential equations displaying bistable fronts, with distinct experimental motivations and mathematical structure, are examined in detail utilizing simulations and perturbation techniques. We see that propagating fronts in both models bounce, trap, pin, or oscillate at the boundary, contingent on the imposed boundary condition, initial front speed and distance from the boundary. The similarities in front boundary interactions in these two models is traced to the fact that they display the same front instability (Ising-Bloch bifurcation) that controls the speed …

In this work we analyze error estimates for rational approximation methods, and their stabilizations, for strongly continuous semigroups. Chapter 1 consists of a brief survey of time discretization methods for semigroups. In Chapter 2, we demonstrate a new method for obtaining convergent approximations in the absence of stability for strongly continuous semigroups with arbitrary initial data. In Section 2.2, we state the stabilization result in more general form and show that this method can be used to improve known error estimates by a magnitude of up to one half for smooth initial data. The synthesis of transition-metal complexes ( n5 -C5H3SiMe2)2[Rh(CO)2]2 and ( n5- -C5H3SiMe2)2[Rh(CO)2]2, both featuring the bis( dimethylsilylcyclopentadienyl) ligand, is reported. Preparation of the rhodium complex yielded a cis:trans ratio of 1 :2, while the iridium analogue generated a 2: 1 ratio. Thermal reaction of cis-( n5- - C5H3SiMe2)2[Rh(CO)2]2 yields cis-( n5 -C5H3SiMe2)2Rh2(CO)3, which features an asymmetrically bridging carbonyl ligand. Reaction of I2with cis-( n5- - C5H3SiMe2)2[Ir(CO)2]2 yields cis-( n5 -C5H3SiMe2)2[Ir(CO)I2]2 Synthesis of ( n5- - C5H3SiMe2)2[Ir(cyclooctadiene)h in a cis:trans ratio of 1 :2.5 is also reported.

Freshwater ecosystems, particularly streams and rivers, have been the subject of prodigious research. Unfortunately, in comparison to neighboring regions, the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain has not received as much attention. Therefore, I collected data on the macroinvertebrates of these streams to begin the understanding of the relationships between community structure and environmental characteristics. In contrast to the hypothesized ancestral streams of these macroinvertebrates, coastal plain streams are commonly devoid of rocks leaving only woody debris as usable hard substrates and are typically lower in dissolved oxygen. Copepods are important components of marine ecosystems. Understanding copepod population dynamics can help interpret variations in both primary producers and higher trophic levels. Egg production, stage duration, and stage-specific mortality rates are key parameters describing copepod population dynamics. Estimation of stage-specific mortality is complicated due to a complex life history, patchiness, and sampling biases. The production of D∗+, D0, D+, D+s and Λ+c charm hadrons and their antiparticles in ep scattering at HERA was measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 79 pb−1. The measurement has been performed in the photoproduction regime with the exchanged-photon virtuality Q2 < 1GeV2 and for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 3.8GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D,Λc)| < 1.6. The production cross sections were used to determine the ratio of neutral and charged D-meson production rates, Ru/d, the strangeness-suppression factor, γs, and the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, Pdv. The measured Ru/d and γs values agree with those obtained in deep inelastic scattering and in e+e- annihilations. The measured Pdv value is smaller than, but consistent with, the previous measurements. The fractions of c quarks hadronising as a particular charm hadron, f(c → D, Λc), were derived in the given kinematic range. The measured open-charm fragmentation fractions are consistent with previous results, although the measured f(c → D*+) is smaller and f(c → Λ+c) is larger than those obtained in e+e- annihilations. These results generally support the hypothesis that fragmentation proceeds independently of the hard sub-process.

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are probabilistic models that have been widely applied to a number of fields since their inception in the late 1960’s. Computational Biology, Image Processing, and Signal Processing, are but a few of the application areas of HMMs. In this dissertation, we develop several new efficient learning algorithms for learning HMM parameters. First, we propose a new polynomial-time algorithm for supervised learning of the parameters of a first order HMM from a state probability distribution (SD) oracle. Selective tidal stream transport is hypothesized as a dominant mechanism by which larvae of marine animals move through estuarine openings. For larvae moving from the shelf to estuarine habitats, selective tidal stream transport proposes that larvae are higher in the water column during flood tide and lower in the water column during ebb tide. Although a number of studies conclude that selective tidal stream transport is the mechanism responsible for larval ingress, few studies consider alternative mechanisms or consider passive explanations for tidal patterns in larval distributions. Since polymer modified asphalt cement (PMAC) has been employed for a decade, the lifetime and wear on some of these pavements is reaching a stage where resurfacing is necessary. This research focuses on the characterization of aged polymer modified asphalt cements (PMAC) to evaluate their potential for recycling. A styrene-butadiene-styrene tri-block (SBS) polymer modified asphalt cement was selected and characterized using standard asphalt binder qualification techniques, i.e., the Superpave PG protocol. We developed a procedure to characterize the relative concentration of polymer in asphalt cements by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The theory of filaments on oriented chord diagrams can be used to detect some non-classical virtual knots. We extend existing filament techniques to virtual links with more than one component and give examples of virtual links that these techniques can detect as non-classical. Given a signed Gauss word underlying an oriented chord diagram, we describe how to construct a finite sequence of integers that encodes all of the filament information for the diagram. In this dissertation, we study necessary conditions and weak invariance properties of dynamical systems with time delay. A number of results have been obtained recently that refine necessary conditions of optimal solutions for nonsmooth dynamical systems without time delay. In this dissertation, we examine the extension of some of these results to problems with time delay. In particular, we study the generalized problem of Bolza with the addition of delay in the state and velocity variables and refer to this problem as the Neutral Problem of Bolza.
