Analytical Separations Using Polymetric Surfactants, Mary Waithira Kamande Jan 2005

Analytical Separations Using Polymetric Surfactants, Mary Waithira Kamande

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of the research presented in this dissertation is to develop effective analytical methods for the separation of both achiral and chiral analytes using polymeric surfactants. Three analytical techniques are employed to accomplish this objective: open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC), open-tubular capillary electrochromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (OT-CEC/MS), and micellar affinity gradient focusing (MAGF). This research work presents novel application of polymeric surfactants that contributes to improved separations of difficult to separate analytes. The first part focuses on the application of an achiral polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating using OT-CEC. The PEM coating consisting of the cationic polymer poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride), …

An Evaluation Of The Enantiomeric Recognition Of Amino Acid Based Polymeric Surfactants And Cyclodextrins Using Spectroscopic And Chromatographic Methods, Bertha Cedillo Valle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The scope of this dissertation is to explore the enantiomeric recognition properties of amino acid based polymeric surfactants using a combination of analytical techniques including chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Chapter 1 includes an introduction to chirality and chiral separations using capillary electrophoresis. Using cyclodextrin modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography (CD-MEKC), the enantioseparation of three binaphthyl derivatives using native alpha- and beta-cyclodextrins in combination with various diastereomers of chiral polymeric surfactants (PS) was examined. A reversal of enantiomeric order was observed with the enantiomers of (1,1 S-binaphthyl-2,2 S-diamine (BNA) and (1,1 S-binaphthol (BOH) due to a competition between the two chiral selectors …

Multiscale Strain Analysis, Timothy Donald Breitzman Jan 2005

Multiscale Strain Analysis, Timothy Donald Breitzman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The mathematical homogenization and corrector theory relevant to prestressed heterogeneous materials in the linear-elastic regime is discussed. A suitable corrector theory is derived to reconstruct the local strain field inside the composite. Based on this theory, we develop an inexpensive numerical method for multi scale strain analysis within a prestressed heterogeneous material. The theory also provides a characterization of the macroscopic strength domain. The strength domain places constraints on the homogenized strain field which guarantee that the actual strain in the heterogeneous material lies inside the strength domain of each material participating in the structure.

Impulsive Systems, Stanislav Zabic Jan 2005

Impulsive Systems, Stanislav Zabic

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Impulsive systems arise when dynamics produce discontinuous trajectories. Discontinuties occur when movements of states happen over a small interval that resembles a point-mass measure. We adopt the formalism in which the controlled dynamic inclusion is the sum of a slow and a fast time velocities belonging to two distinct vector fields. Fast time velocities are controlled by a vector valued Borel measure. The trajectory of impulsive systems is a function of bounded variation. To give a definition of solutions, a notion of graph completion of the control measure is needed. In the nonimpulsive case, a solution can be defined as …

Temporal And Spatial Harvest Patterns Of River Otter In Louisiana And Its Potential Use As A Bioindicator Species Of Water Quality, Daniel Gustavo Scognamillo Jan 2005

Temporal And Spatial Harvest Patterns Of River Otter In Louisiana And Its Potential Use As A Bioindicator Species Of Water Quality, Daniel Gustavo Scognamillo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Louisiana is the leading state in number of river otters used in reintroduction programs in other states and in the production of pelts. However, habitat loss and degradation have prompted concern about the status of otter populations. This dissertation undertakes a spatial and temporal analysis of river otter harvest activity and examines environmental factors related to monitoring mercury levels in streams in Louisiana. Harvest data for 1957-2004 were analyzed to identify spatial and temporal trends in otter harvest activity. Changes have occurred in the last 20 years in the spatial dynamics of otter harvest in Louisiana, these include an increasing …

Dissipative Lipschitz Dynamics, Vinicio Rafael Rios Jan 2005

Dissipative Lipschitz Dynamics, Vinicio Rafael Rios

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation we study two related important issues in control theory: invariance of dynamical systems and Hamilton-Jacobi theory associated with optimal control theory. Given a control system modelled as a differential inclusion, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong invariance property of the system when the dynamic satisfies a dissipative Lipschitz condition. We show that when the dynamic is almost upper semicontinuous and satisfies the dissipative Lipschitz property, these conditions can be expressed in terms of approximate Hamilton-Jacobi inequalities, which subsumes the classic infinitesimal characterization of strongly invariant systems given under the Lipschitz assumtion. In the important …

The Stereoselective Synthesis Of The Butyrolactone-Bridged [8-5-5] Tricyclic Ring Systems Of (+/-)-Asteriscanolide Via The Titanium-Mediated Hetero-Pauson-Khand Reaction, Mohamed G. Sherriff

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The stereoselective construction of the tricyclic ring system of asteriscanolide from cyclooctadiene has been achieved. The synthesis involves two main steps; the synthesis of the aldehyde precursor(5)and the titanium-mediated cabocyclization of 5 to make the three rings of 43 stereoselectively.

Shear Induced Orientation In Polymer-Clay Solutions And Their Influence On The Structure In Multilayered Films, Matthew Michael Malwitz Jan 2005

Shear Induced Orientation In Polymer-Clay Solutions And Their Influence On The Structure In Multilayered Films, Matthew Michael Malwitz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The influence of shear on viscoelastic solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and clay (Cloisite, CNA) was investigated by rheology and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) under shear. These measurements determined the shear-induced orientation of the clay and the polymer as well as their relaxation behavior after cessation of shear. Comparison of PEO-CNA solutions (~100 nm diameter platelets) to previously studied PEO-Laponite gels (~30 nm diameter platelets) found that the orientation of CNA platelets occurs at much lower shear rates. Additionally, the relaxation times were much longer for CNA platelets than for Laponite platelets. From these solutions and gels, multilayered nanocomposite …

Biologically Inspired Learning System, Patrick Mcdowell Jan 2005

Biologically Inspired Learning System, Patrick Mcdowell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Learning Systems used on robots require either a-priori knowledge in the form of models, rules of thumb or databases or require that robot to physically execute multitudes of trial solutions. The first requirement limits the robot’s ability to operate in unstructured changing environments, and the second limits the robot’s service life and resources. In this research a generalized approach to learning was developed through a series of algorithms that can be used for construction of behaviors that are able to cope with unstructured environments through adaptation of both internal parameters and system structure as a result of a goal based …

Long-Term Freshwater Input And Sediment Load From Three Tributaries To Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Kangsheng Wu Jan 2005

Long-Term Freshwater Input And Sediment Load From Three Tributaries To Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Kangsheng Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lake Pontchartrain and the drainage basin have experienced environmental degradation because of human settlement, land use and climate changes. A thorough understanding of hydrologic trends and variability associated with the changes is critical for sustainable water resources management and ecosystem restoration in the region. This study examined freshwater inflow (1940-2002) and suspended solids loadings (1978-2001) from three upper Lake Pontchartrain watersheds that contribute to the lake estuary: the Amite, Tickfaw, and Tangipahoa river watersheds. The relationships of freshwater inflow and suspended solids loadings with climate variables and population growth were investigated. Using observed daily discharge, a spatially-distributed hydrologic model (SWAT) …

The Thermal Degradation Of Bisphenol A Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2005

The Thermal Degradation Of Bisphenol A Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The thermal degradation of polycarbonate in air was studied as a function of mass loss using TGA/FTIR, GC/MS and LC/MS. In the main degradation region, 480–560 °C, the assigned structures of smaller molecules and linear molecules that evolved in air were very similar to those obtained from the degradation in nitrogen; the degradation of polycarbonate follows chain scission of the isopropylidene linkage, in agreement with the bond dissociation energies, and hydrolysis/alcoholysis of carbonate linkage. Compared to the degradation in nitrogen, some differences were observed primarily in the beginning stage of degradation. Oxygen may facilitate branching as well as radical formation …

The Effects Of Triphenylphosphate And Recorcinolbis(Diphenylphosphate) On The Thermal Degradation Of Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2005

The Effects Of Triphenylphosphate And Recorcinolbis(Diphenylphosphate) On The Thermal Degradation Of Polycarbonate In Air, Bok Nam Jang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The thermal degradation of polycarbonate/triphenylphosphate (PC/TPP) and PC/resocinolbis(diphenylphosphate) (PC/RDP) in air has been studied using TGA/FTIR and GC/MS. In PC/phosphate blends, the phosphate stabilizes the carbonate group of polycarbonate from alcoholysis between the alcohol products of polycarbonate degradation and the carbonate linkage. Thus, the evolution of bisphenol A, which is mainly produced via hydrolysis/alcoholysis of the carbonate linkage, is significantly reduced, while, the evolution of various alkylphenols and diarylcarbonates increases. The bonds that are broken first in the thermal degradation of both the carbonate and isopropylidene linkages of polycarbonate are the weakest bonds in each, when a phosphate is present. …

Polyethylene And Polypropylene Nanocomposites Based Upon An Oligomerically-Modified Clay, Jinguo Zhang, David D. Jiang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Montmorillonite clay was modified with an oligomeric surfactant, which was then melt blended with polyethylene and polypropylene in a Brabender mixer. The morphology was characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, while thermal stability was evaluated from thermogravimetric analysis and the fire properties by cone calorimetry. The nanocomposites are best described as mixed immiscible/intercalated/delaminated systems and the reduction in peak heat release rate is about 40% at 5% inorganic clay loading.

Swierczek, Shane Ruebush, Se Bok Jang, Lu Meng, Ventris M. D'Souza, John W. Peters, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Methionine aminopeptidases (MetAPs) are ubiquitous metallohydrolases that remove the N-terminal methionine from nascent polypeptide chains. Although various crystal structures of MetAP in the presence of inhibitors have been solved, the structural aspects of the product-bound step has received little attention. Both perpendicular- and parallel-mode electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra were recorded for the MnII-loaded forms of the type-I (Escherichia coli) and type-II (Pyrococcus furiosus) MetAPs in the presence of the reaction product l-methionine (l-Met). In general, similar EPR features were observed for both [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)]−l-Met and [MnMn(PfMetAP-II)]−l-Met. The observed perpendicular-mode EPR …

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Reactive intermediates in the Friedel−Crafts acylation of aromatic donors are scrutinized upon their successful isolation and X-ray crystallography at very low temperatures. Detailed analyses of the X-ray parameters for the [1:1] complexes of different aliphatic and aromatic-acid chlorides with the Lewis acids antimony pentafluoride and pentachloride, gallium trichloride, titanium and zirconium tetrachlorides provide unexpected insight into the activation mechanism for the formation of the critical acylium carbocations. Likewise, the X-ray-structure examinations of aliphatic and aromatic acylium electrophiles also isolated as crystalline salts point to the origins of their electrophilic reactivity. Although the Wheland intermediates (as acylium adducts to arene donors) …

New carbocationic salts (via O-protonation of substituted benzoic acids) are prepared for the first time by controlled hydration of the corresponding benzoylium salts and isolated in pure crystalline form. Precise X-ray structural analyses reveal the rather unexpected (electronic) structure of the carboxylic-acidium functionality.

Characterization Of Aged Polymer Modified Asphalt Cements For Recycling Purposes, Codrin Daranga Jan 2005

Characterization Of Aged Polymer Modified Asphalt Cements For Recycling Purposes, Codrin Daranga

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since polymer modified asphalt cement (PMAC) has been employed for a decade, the lifetime and wear on some of these pavements is reaching a stage where resurfacing is necessary. This research focuses on the characterization of aged polymer modified asphalt cements (PMAC) to evaluate their potential for recycling. A styrene-butadiene-styrene tri-block (SBS) polymer modified asphalt cement was selected and characterized using standard asphalt binder qualification techniques, i.e., the Superpave PG protocol. We developed a procedure to characterize the relative concentration of polymer in asphalt cements by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Infrared spectrographic, thermogravimetric and rheological techniques were used to identify …

Detection Of Biologically Important Molecules, Kyukwang Kim Jan 2005

Detection Of Biologically Important Molecules, Kyukwang Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Anions play important roles in biological systems. The design of anion sensors has been of great interest. The selective detection of a specific anion is particularly challenging. In the first chapter, I describe the synthesis of a TBS-protected fluorescein dye (1.1) and its use for the selective detection of fluoride. Solutions of 1.1 either in DCM or in aqueous media at physiological pH show the excellent selectivity towards fluoride to afford color formation while solutions of other interfering anions remain colorless. The monitoring of homocysteine (Hcy) and cysteine (Cys) levels is important since they are biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s and …

Condensation On (002) Graphite Of Liquid Bismuth Far Below Its Bulk Melting Point, M. K. Zayed, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2005

Condensation On (002) Graphite Of Liquid Bismuth Far Below Its Bulk Melting Point, M. K. Zayed, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Condensation of thermally evaporated Bi on (002) graphite, at temperatures of 300-523K, was studied using in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and room temperature ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). For deposition at temperatures below 415±5K, transmission RHEED patterns of Bi appeared at an average thickness of ∼0.5 monolayer (ML). AFM images showed that the film consisted of crystallites in the shape of triangular step pyramids with step heights corresponding to single and double Bi layers in the [111] direction. This morphology indicates crystallization from the vapor. For deposition at higher temperatures, diffuse RHEED patterns appeared independent of the …

Description Of Light Propagation Through A Circular Aperture Using Nonparaxial Vector Diffraction Theory, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha Jan 2005

Description Of Light Propagation Through A Circular Aperture Using Nonparaxial Vector Diffraction Theory, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha

Physics

Using nonparaxial vector diffraction theory derived using the Hertz vector formalism, integral expressions for the electric and magnetic field components of light within and beyond an apertured plane are obtained for an incident plane wave. For linearly polarized light incident on a circular aperture, the integrals for the field components and for the Poynting vector are numerically evaluated. By further two-dimensional integration of a Poynting vector component, the total transmission of a circular aperture is determined as a function of the aperture radius to wavelength ratio. The validity of using Kirchhoff boundary conditions in the aperture plane is also examined …

Coffee To Go! Modeling Thermoclines In Multivariable Calculus, Andrea Bruder, Brynja R. Kohler Jan 2005

Coffee To Go! Modeling Thermoclines In Multivariable Calculus, Andrea Bruder, Brynja R. Kohler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

While mathematical modeling is an integral process in applied mathematics, students rarely encounter genuine modeling opportunities in their calculus courses. Here we introduce a laboratory experience as a natural starting point for calculus students to investigate multivariable functions. A layered system of coffee and milk serves as a physical model for temperature gradients in lakes or the atmosphere, where temperature depends on both a temporal and spatial variable. Students create, observe, and collect temperature data of their own, graph the data, and develop mathematical models to fit the data. We require students to write a report about their findings. This …

An Application Of Combinatorial Methods, Yingying Yang Jan 2005

An Application Of Combinatorial Methods, Yingying Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Probability theory is a branch of mathematics concerned with determining the long run frequency or chance that a given event will occur. This chance is determined by dividing the number of selected events by the number of total events possible, assuming these events are equally likely. Probability theory is simply enumerative combinatorial analysis when applied to finite sets. For a given finite sample space, probability questions are usually "just" a lot of counting. The purpose of this thesis is to provide some in depth analysis of several combinatorial methods, including basic principles of counting, permutations and combinations, by specifically exploring …

Charged Higgs Production: Higher-Order Corrections, Nikolaos Kidonakis Jan 2005

Charged Higgs Production: Higher-Order Corrections, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present a calculation of higher-order radiative corrections to charged Higgs production in association with a top quark via the process bg -> tH-. Results for charged Higgs production at the LHC are presented, including the dependence of the cross section on the charged Higgs mass, the top quark mass, the factorization and renormalization scales, and tan beta. I show that the theoretical prediction for the cross section is significantly enhanced and is greatly stabilized when the higher-order corrections are included.
