The Hyades open cluster presents a unique laboratory for planet formation and stellar pollution studies because all of the stars have essentially the same age and were born from the same cloud of gas. Furthermore, with an age of ~650 Myr, most of the intermediate- and low-mass stars are on the main sequence. Given these assumptions, the accretion of metal-rich material onto the surface of a star during and shortly after the formation of planetary systems should be evident via the enhanced metallicity of the star. Hidden Creek Lake (HCL), an ice-marginal lake impounded by Kennicott Glacier, Wrangell Mountains, Alaska, fills annually to ~20 to 30 x ~10⁶ m³ and then drains subglacially within 2 to 3 days. During the 1999 and 2000 jökulhlaups, we carried out a series of planned observations around the lake and in the Kennicott River, which drains the glacier. Approximately 20% of the lake volume was contained within a subglacial water ‘‘wedge’’ beneath the ice dam. The entire volume of the lake drains through the wedge; hydraulic head loss through this constriction may be responsible for the fairly symmetrical shape of …

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory began seismic monitoring operations under the DOE-UCCSN Cooperative Agreement on 11/01/1999. This final report summarizes our activities and studies made in the four years up to 09/30/2003. Previously, NSL operated under the M&O for the Yucca Mountain Project from October 1995 through September 1999 and under the U. S. Geological Survey from October 1992 through September 1995. For purposes of this report, earthquakes occurring in the years FY1998 and FY1999 were analyzed in the first two years of the NSL’s involvement with the Cooperative Agreement, and they will be treated here, along with the data in …

In classification problems arising in genomics research it is common to study populations for which a broad class assignment is known (say, normal versus diseased) and one seeks to find undiscovered subclasses within one or both of the known classes. Formally, this problem can be thought of as an unsupervised analysis nested within a supervised one. Here we take the view that the nested unsupervised analysis can successfully utilize information from the entire data set for constructing and/or selecting useful predictors. Strange baryons have long been known to exhibit a leading particle effect. A recent comparison of Ξ‾ production in π‾, n, and Σ‾ interactions with nuclei show this effect clearly. These data are supplemented by earlier measurements of Ξ‾ and Ω production by a Ξ‾ beam. We calculate the Ξ‾ and Ω xF distributions and nuclear dependence in hA interactions using the intrinsic model.

In this work, we present the development and validation of a tandem mass spectrometry method for the quantitative determination of methoxyamine (CH3ONH2), a potential new chemotherapeutic agent, in human and mouse plasma. Methoxyamine together with the internal standard (I.S.) methoxyl-D3-amine was directly derivatized in plasma sample with a novel chemical agent 4-(N,N-diethylamino)benzaldehyde. The product solution was injected into an on-line Oasis® HLB extraction column ( mm) for analyte extraction. After the elution of extractives, the derivatized analytes were monitored by the positive-electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS). The structures of derivatized analytes were elucidated by fragmentation. Quantitation of plasma methoxyamine was carried …

Observations are used to examine how soil moisture influences the surface radiation budget, ground heat flux, and available energy in semiarid environments. Defining this relationship is critical to understand interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere, in particular assessing if a feedback exists between soil moisture and rainfall anomalies. We use two summers of data collected from semiarid grassland and shrubland ecosystems in central New Mexico. The response of surface radiation budget components and other variables to soil moisture variations are quantified via linear regression. Resistive Transitions In Quench-Condensed Bi Films Near A Normal-Metal Ground Plane, Richard P. Barber Jr., Ben Kain

We report observations of the zero-field resistive transitions of superconducting quench-condensed Bi0.97Tl0.03 films both near electrically isolated normal-metal ground planes and on clean fire-polished glass. Transition temperatures, obtained by fitting the data with the two-dimensional Aslamazov-Larkin theory of fluctuation conductance, were found to be significantly enhanced for films deposited over ground planes versus those deposited onto insulating substrates. Conductivity enhancement due to superconducting fluctuations was found to be much less than expected for the thinnest samples. This suppression was coincident with broadened superconductor transitions that are consistent with nonuniform sample thickness. Sufficiently thick films showed reasonable agreement with both the …

The Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has analyzed approximately 200 groundwater samples for over 60 trace elements and major solutes over the past ten years. These samples represent groundwaters from the Nevada Test Site, Amargosa Valley, the Spring Mountains, Death Valley, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat Valley, and Oasis Valley. The preparation of a data base containing all of these data is near completion and will be submitted to DOE upon its completion. Data verification is in progress. This dissertation develops a modification to the standard Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) which allows the use of a new "generalized residual" in the hypothesis conditional probability calculation. The generalized residual is a linear combination of traditional Kalman filter residuals and "post-fit" Kalman filter residuals which are calculated after measurement incorporation. This modified MMAE is termed a Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (GRMMAE). The dissertation provides a derivation of the hypothesis conditional probability formula which the GRMMAE uses to calculate probabilities that each elemental filter in the GRMMAE contains the correct parameter value. We propose a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model with time-dependent covariates measured with errors. This model is used to model S-oxybutynin's kinetics following an oral administration of Ditropan, and allows the distribution rate to depend on time-dependent covariates blood pressure and heart rate, which are measured with errors. We propose two two-step estimation methods: the second order two-step method with numerical solutions of differential equations (2orderND), and the second order two-step method with closed form approximate solutions of differential equations (2orderAD). Task 35, titled "Chemical Analyses for Alcove 8 / Niche 3 Tracer Studies", provided for the development of analytical procedures and the analysis of samples from the first phase of tracer testing at Alcove 8 / Niche 3 in the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF). This article reviews our work on the development and optimization of chiral, nonpolar media with large second-order nonlinear optical responses. We show how molecular engineering, theory, and measurements can be used to optimize this promising class of nonlinear optical materials. We describe how supramolecular alignment into easily processable materials takes advantage of the relevant molecular hyperpolarizabilities. A wide variety of techniques can be used to fabricate bulk materials belonging to the chiral nonpolar symmetry groups, D∞ and D2. The microscopic chromophore alignment schemes that optimize the nonlinear optical response in such materials are deduced from general symmetry considerations for both …

Evaluating the potential impacts of intensive silvicultural practices on water quality is critical for establishing the long-term sustainability of contemporary forest management practices. From 1979 to 1985, a study involving nine small (~2.5 ha) forested watersheds was conducted near Alto, Texas in the upper western Gulf-Coastal Plain to evaluate the impacts then-current silvicultural practices on water quality. In the years following the study, silvicultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) including Streamside Management Zones (SMZs) and other erosion control practices evolved and questions arose about the applicability of earlier results to current practices. Electron and ion density gratings induced by two intersecting ultrashort laser pulses at intensities of 1016 W/cm2 or lower are investigated. The ponderomotive force generated by the inhomogeneous intensity distribution in the intersecting region of the interfering pulses produces deep electron and ion density modulations at a wavelength less than a laser wavelength in vacuum. Dependence of the density modulation on the plasma densities, temperatures, and the ion mass, as well as the laser pulse parameters are studied analytically and by particle-in-cell simulations. The novel use of imaging riometers to observe mesospheric gravity waves is described. Imaging riometers respond to changes in the absorption of cosmic radio noise in the ionospheric D-region which enables them to detect the compression and rarefaction of the atmosphere at 90 km altitude generated by the passage of gravity waves. A considerable advantage of this method is that, unlike conventional techniques which rely on imaging faint optical emissions from the airglow layer at 87 km altitude, riometers remain operative under daylit, moonlit or cloudy conditions. Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that integrates classroom concepts with related community service. Computer science faculty and students stand to reap great benefit from the integration of service-learning practice and philosophy into curricula. Many faculty are already doing so, yet computer science is not very visible in the service-learning community. Similarly, service-learning is not very visible in the computer science education community. It is imperative for those computer science faculty involved in service-learning to develop, apply and disseminate effective frameworks for integrating service learning into undergraduate computer science curricula so that its benefits may be more fully realized.

Recent paleoseismic investigations have identified a number of active faults in Northern and Western Thailand. Northern Thailand is an intraplate basin and range province, comprised of north-south-trending Cenozoic intermontane grabens and half grabens, bounded by north- to northwest-striking normal to normal-oblique faults and northeast-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults. The basin-bounding normal faults are marked by steep, linear range fronts with triangular facets and wineglass canyons and have slip rates of 0.1 to 0.8 mm/yr. Based on limited data, the average vertical displacement-per-event is about 1.0 to 1.5 m. These faults are characterized by recurrence intervals of thousands to tens of thousands …

Traditional approaches to building intelligent information systems employ an object model to define a representational structure for the information of interest within the target domain of the system. At runtime, the model provides a constrained template for the creation of the individual object instances and relationships that together define the state of the system at a given point in time. The ontology also provides a vocabulary for expressing domain knowledge typically in the form of rules (declarative knowledge) or methods (procedural knowledge). We monitored the haul-out behavior of 68 radio-tagged harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) during the molt season at two Alaskan haul-out sites (Grand Island, August-September 1994; Nanvak Bay, August-September 2000). For each site, we created a statistical model of the proportion of seals hauled out as a function of date, time of day, tide, and weather covariates. Using these models, we identified the conditions that would result in the greatest proportion of seals hauled out.
