The Expected Wet Period Of Finite Dam With Exponential Inputs, Eui Yong Lee, Kimberly Kinateder Nov 2000

The Expected Wet Period Of Finite Dam With Exponential Inputs, Eui Yong Lee, Kimberly Kinateder

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We use martingale methods to obtain an explicit formula for the expected wet period of the finite dam of capacity V, where the amounts of inputs are i.i.d exponential random variables and the output rate is one, when the reservoir is not empty. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit formula for the expected hitting time of either 0 or V and a new expression for the distribution of the number of overflows during the wet period, both without the use of complex analysis.

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai Nov 2000

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai

Physics Faculty Publications

The energy positions of the optical transitions in both GaN and ZnO were investigated when the samples were excited simultaneously with a HeCd laser and an Ar+ ion laser. The increased number of free electrons excited by the Ar+ ion laser will effectively screen both the free exciton and bound exciton transitions, resulting in a blueshift. The increased number of free electrons also produces many-body effects, which lead to a reduction of the band gap energy and thus a redshift. The resultant of screening and renormalization results in a redshift of the optical transitions in ZnO but a …

Cerium Liii-Edge X-Ray Absorption Study Of The Ceₓfe4-YCoYSb₁₂ Skutterudites, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long, Robert Cortès, Donald T. Morelli, Gregory P. Meisner Nov 2000

Cerium Liii-Edge X-Ray Absorption Study Of The Ceₓfe4-YCoYSb₁₂ Skutterudites, Fernande Grandjean, Gary J. Long, Robert Cortès, Donald T. Morelli, Gregory P. Meisner

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The cerium LIII-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectra of the CexFe4-yCoySb12 compounds have been obtained at 295 K and unambiguously indicate that cerium is in the 4f1 electronic ground state for all values of 0.22≤x≤0.98 and 0.0≤y≤3.5. This stable trivalent state of cerium is in agreement with the proposed (CeFe4Sb12) 1-α(Co4Sb12)α, solid solution structure, in which the cerium atoms are always surrounded by twelve antimony first neighbors and six iron second neighbors, the observed magnetic properties of CeFe4Sb12 and …

Second-Harmonic And Sum-Frequency Imaging Of Organic Nanocrystals With Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Yuzhen Shen, Jacek Swiatkiewicz, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Przemyslaw P. Markowicz, Paras N. Prasad

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with photon scanning tunneling microscopy and shear-force detection are used to map the nonlinear optical response and the surface topograph of N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol crystals with a subdiffraction-limited resolution. The domain-size dependence of the spatial feature is obtained, which shows the local orientational distribution of the optical near field radiated by nonlinear nanocrystals and reveals the difference between nanoscopic and macroscopic second-order optical nonlinearities of molecular crystals.

Biogeochemistry And Contaminant Geochemistry Of Marine And Estuarine Sediments, New Haven, Connecticut (Usa), Michael A. Kruge, Gaboury Benoit Nov 2000

Biogeochemistry And Contaminant Geochemistry Of Marine And Estuarine Sediments, New Haven, Connecticut (Usa), Michael A. Kruge, Gaboury Benoit

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The urbanized shore areas of Long Island Sound in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut (USA) have a long history of exposure to point and non-point sources of pollution, New Haven having been one of the birthplaces of the industrial revolution. As an unintended consequence of such activities, the region's sedimentary systems have incorporated a complex mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants. With its long and varied pollution history and the multiplicity of sedimentary environments (fluvial, estuarine, intertidal, marsh, etc.) present in a compact geographical area, the region is ideal natural laboratory for field testing new contamination assessment techniques. The …

A Survey Of Context-Aware Mobile Computing Research, Guanling Chen, David Kotz Nov 2000

A Survey Of Context-Aware Mobile Computing Research, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Context-aware computing is a mobile computing paradigm in which applications can discover and take advantage of contextual information (such as user location, time of day, nearby people and devices, and user activity). Since it was proposed about a decade ago, many researchers have studied this topic and built several context-aware applications to demonstrate the usefulness of this new technology. Context-aware applications (or the system infrastructure to support them), however, have never been widely available to everyday users. In this survey of research on context-aware systems and applications, we looked in depth at the types of context used and models of …

Transport Anomalies And Marginal Fermi-Liquid Effects At A Quantum Critical Point, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta Nov 2000

Transport Anomalies And Marginal Fermi-Liquid Effects At A Quantum Critical Point, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The conductivity and the tunneling density of states of disordered itinerant electrons in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic transition at low temperature are discussed. Critical fluctuations lead to nonanalytic frequency and temperature dependencies that are distinct from the usual long-time tail effects in a disordered Fermi liquid. The crossover between these two types of behavior is proposed as an experimental check of recent theories of the quantum ferromagnetic critical behavior. In addition, the quasiparticle properties at criticality are shown to be those of a marginal Fermi liquid.

Binary Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Christopher H. Heath, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski Nov 2000

Binary Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Christopher H. Heath, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present data from the first systematic studies of binary condensation in supersonic nozzles. The apparatus used to conduct the experiments is described in detail, and the important issues of stability and reproducibility of the experiments are discussed. Experiments were conducted with water, ethanol, propanol, and binary mixtures of these compounds. Onset was determined in the temperature range of 190-215 K, and for each mixture composition the pressures of the condensible species at an onset temperature of 207 K were determined. For the ideal ethanol-propanol mixtures, the onset pressures at constant temperature vary almost linearly between those of the pure …

Horse Creek Fen, Birdwood Creek And Kelly Ranch Inventory, Robert F. Steinauer Nov 2000

Horse Creek Fen, Birdwood Creek And Kelly Ranch Inventory, Robert F. Steinauer

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Horse Creek Fen preserve is a complex of wetland communities (Sandhills fen, Sandhills freshwater marsh, and northern sedge wet meadow) associated with Horse Creek, a ditched stream that drains the Allen Valley fen. Fen vegetation on the preserve is limited to approximately 20 acres on the western boundary of the preserve where it abuts the eastern end of the Allen Valley fen (Steinauer et al. 1996). The fen vegetation is surrounded primarily by Sandhills freshwater marsh, which in turn is surrounded by northern sedge wet meadow. Additional Sandhills freshwater marsh occurs near the eastern boundary of the preserve. The eastern …

Detection Of Solid Pigment In Dermatoscopy Images Using Texture Analysis, Murali Anantha, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss Nov 2000

Detection Of Solid Pigment In Dermatoscopy Images Using Texture Analysis, Murali Anantha, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background/aims: Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM), also known as dermoscopy or dermatoscopy, is a non-invasive, in vivo technique, that permits visualization of features of pigmented melanocytic neoplasms that are not discernable by examination with the naked eye. ELM offers a completely new range of visual features. One such feature is the solid pigment, also called the blotchy pigment or dark structureless area. Our goal was to automatically detect this feature and determine whether its presence is useful in distinguishing benign from malignant pigmented lesions.

Methods: Here, a texture-based algorithm is developed for the detection of solid pigment. The factors d and a …

Mössbauer Spectral Study Of The Magnetic Properties Of Ce₂Fe₁₇Hₓ (X=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, And 5), Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Olivier Isnard Nov 2000

Mössbauer Spectral Study Of The Magnetic Properties Of Ce₂Fe₁₇Hₓ (X=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, And 5), Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Fernande Grandjean, Olivier Isnard

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra of Ce2Fe17Hx, where x=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, have been measured and analyzed between 4.2 and 295 K. Because Ce2Fe17 exhibits a helical magnetic order between 225 and 90 K and a fan magnetic order below 90 K, its Mössbauer spectra were fit with a distribution of hyperfine fields and θ angles for four of the eight magnetically inequivalent sites. Because the hydrides exhibit a magnetization within the basal plane of the hexagonal cell, their Mössbauer spectra were fit with seven sextets. The four isomer shifts …

Secular Variations Of Atomic Oxygen In The Mesopause Region Induced By Transient Gravity Wave Packets, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid, Philip G. Richards Nov 2000

Secular Variations Of Atomic Oxygen In The Mesopause Region Induced By Transient Gravity Wave Packets, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid, Philip G. Richards

Publications

We employ a 2-dimensional, time-dependent, fully nonlinear model of minor species in the mesopause region and our Spectral Full-Wave Model to simulate the response of atomic oxygen (O) to a gravity wave packet in the mesopause region. We demonstrate that gravity waves affect the time-averaged distribution of O in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region through the constituent fluxes the waves induce. Our conclusions are based on simulations of two wave packets that violate the non-acceleration conditions through transience and dissipation. The net cycle-averaged effect of the waves is to significantly increase (by as much as 50%) the O …

Automated Systematic Testing For Constraint-Based Interactive Services, Patrice Godefroid, Lalita Jategaonkar Jagadeesan, Radha Jagadeesan, Konstantin Laufer Nov 2000

Automated Systematic Testing For Constraint-Based Interactive Services, Patrice Godefroid, Lalita Jategaonkar Jagadeesan, Radha Jagadeesan, Konstantin Laufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Constraint-based languages can express in a concise way the complex logic of a new generation of interactive services for applications such as banking or stock trading, that must support multiple types of interfaces for accessing the same data. These include automatic speech-recognition interfaces where inputs may be provided in any order by users of the service. We study in this paper how to systematically test event-driven applications developed using such languages. We show how such applications can be tested automatically, without the need for any manually-written test cases, and effi- ciently, by taking advantage of their capability of taking unordered …

Application Of Tree-Structured Regression For Regional Precipitation Prediction Using General Circulation Model Output, Xiangshang Li, David J. Sailor Nov 2000

Application Of Tree-Structured Regression For Regional Precipitation Prediction Using General Circulation Model Output, Xiangshang Li, David J. Sailor

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study presents a tree-structured regression (TSR) method to relate daily precipitation with a variety of free-atmosphere variables. Historical data were used to identify distinct weather patterns associated with differing types of precipitation events. Models were developed using 67% of the data for training and the remaining data for model validation. Seasonal models were built for each of 2 US sites: San Francisco, California, and San Antonio, Texas. The average correlation between observed and simulated daily precipitation data series is 0.75 for the training set and 0.68 for the validation set. Relative humidity was found to be the dominant variable …

Two-Dimensional Pendulum Experiments Using A Spark Generator, Rand S. Worland, Matthew J. Moelter

Physics

Student understanding of the superposition of perpendicular harmonic oscillators can be enhanced using a spark generator to record position-versus-time data for smallamplitude pendulum motion in two dimensions. Our students have used this arrangement to analyze the motion of a spherical pendulum and a “Y-suspended” (Blackburn) pendulum that has two effective lengths.

Toward Automated Abstraction For Protocols On Branching Networks, Michael D. Jones, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan Nov 2000

Toward Automated Abstraction For Protocols On Branching Networks, Michael D. Jones, Ganesh Gopalakrishnan

Faculty Publications

We have used various manual abstraction techniques to formally verify a transaction ordering property for an IO protocol over bus/bridge networks. In the context of network protocol verification, an abstraction is needed to reduce the unbounded number of network configurations to a small number of representative networks that can be checked using algorithmic methods. The manually derived abstraction was both brittle and difficult to validate. In this report, we discuss the need for abstraction techniques in the formal verification of protocols over networks and present our recent efforts to create an automatic abstraction technique for network protocols using predicate abstraction …

Inference Of Tidal Elevation In Shallow Water Using A Vessel-Towed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Larry P. Atkinson, Tom C. Royer Nov 2000

Inference Of Tidal Elevation In Shallow Water Using A Vessel-Towed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Larry P. Atkinson, Tom C. Royer

CCPO Publications

Vessel-towed acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) have been widely used to measure velocity profiles. Since the instrument is usually mounted on a catamaran floating on the surface, previous studies have used the water surface as the reference level from which the vertical coordinate for the velocity profile is defined. However, because of the tidal oscillation, the vertical coordinate thus defined is time-dependent in an Earth-coordinate system, which introduces an error to the estimated harmonic constants for the velocity. As a result, the total transport will also be in error. This is particularly a problem in shallow waters where the tidal …

Simulation Of Daily And Monthly Stream Discharge From Small Watersheds Using The Swat Model, Crystal A. Spruill, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba Nov 2000

Simulation Of Daily And Monthly Stream Discharge From Small Watersheds Using The Swat Model, Crystal A. Spruill, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was evaluated and parameter sensitivities were determined while modeling daily streamflows in a small central Kentucky watershed over a two-year period. Streamflow data from 1996 were used to calibrate the model and streamflow data from 1995 were used for evaluation. The model adequately predicted the trends in daily streamflow during this period although Nash-Sutcliffe R2 values were –0.04 and 0.19 for 1995 and 1996, respectively. The model poorly predicted the timing of some peak flow values and recession rates during the last half of 1995. Excluding daily peak flow values from August …

The Infall Region Of Abell 576: Independent Mass And Light Profiles, Kenneth Rines, Margaret J. Geller, Antonaldo Diaferio, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary A. Wegner Nov 2000

The Infall Region Of Abell 576: Independent Mass And Light Profiles, Kenneth Rines, Margaret J. Geller, Antonaldo Diaferio, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary A. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We describe observations of the nearby (cz = 11,487 km s-1) cluster of galaxies Abell 576 beyond the virial radius and into the infall region where galaxies are on their first or second pass through the cluster. Using 1057 redshifts, we use the infall pattern in redshift space to determine the mass profile of A576 to a radius of ~4 h-1 Mpc. This mass estimation technique makes no assumptions about the equilibrium state of the cluster. Within ~1 h-1 Mpc, the mass profile we derive exceeds that determined from X-ray observations by a factor of …

Electric Field-Induced Acoustic-Optic Mode Coupling In An Anticlinic Liquid Crystal, Shiyong Zhang, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt Nov 2000

Electric Field-Induced Acoustic-Optic Mode Coupling In An Anticlinic Liquid Crystal, Shiyong Zhang, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt

Faculty Scholarship

A dc electric field was applied perpendicular to the tilt plane of a pitch-compensated (unwound helix) anticlinic liquid crystal. By means of quasielastic light scattering, the field was found to couple the acoustic and optic Goldstone modes, resulting in an increase of the relaxation time τβ of the acoustic like eigenmode. Elastic constants were estimated from the relaxation time data.

The contributions cover the topics of improved parton showering and comparisons of Monte Carlo programs and resummation calculations, recent developments in Pythia, the methodology of measuring backgrounds to new physics searches, variable flavor number schemes for heavy quark electro-production, the underlying event in hard scattering processes, and the Monte Carlo MCFM for NLO processes.

Comparative Studies Of Dissociative Electron Attachment To Methyl Halides, R. S. Wilde, Gordon A. Gallup, Ilya I. Fabrikant Nov 2000

Comparative Studies Of Dissociative Electron Attachment To Methyl Halides, R. S. Wilde, Gordon A. Gallup, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Gordon Gallup Publications

The dissociative electron attachment cross sections for the methyl halides vary in an enormous range from the virtually unmeasurable 10−23 cm2 for CH3Cl at room temperature to 10−14 cm2 for CH3I. In this paper we supplement our previous studies by calculations of dissociative electron attachment to CH3Br and compare results for all methyl halides studied so far. The rate as a function of temperature for CH3Cl and CH3Br exhibits an exponential dependence on 1/T (Arrhenius law) with the activation energy lower for CH3Br. …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report the observation of Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations in the mixed state of the organic superconductor β″-(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃ (Tc≈4.4K). At low temperatures the SdH oscillations persist clearly below the upper critical field Bc₂(0)≈3.6 T almost down to the field where the resistivity vanishes. Rather unusually, no additional damping of the SdH-signal amplitude — as well as of the de Haas–van Alphen amplitude — is observed in the superconducting state. This indicates that the damping in the vortex state of this quasi-two-dimensional superconductor is different in character to that observed for most three-dimensional materials.

Grimalt, Jürgen Rullkötter, Marie-Alexandrine Sicre, Roger Summons, John Farrington, H. Rodger Harvey, Miguel Goñi, Ken Sawada

OES Faculty Publications

The literature pertaining to C37 alkenone and C37 and C38 alkenoate production and diagenesis has been reviewed and evaluated for issues that might jeopardize their usefulness in paleotemperature estimation. We also examined the use of the C37 alkenones as paleoproductivity indicators, the stability of their δ13C isotopic compositions, and their incorporation into the nonsolvent extractable organic matter fraction. Biological transformation of organic matter by bacteria and zooplankton does not appear to cause significant changes to the ratio of C37:2 and C37:3 alkenones, but there are major alterations in the relative composition of alkenoates. Studies of water column processes and postdepositional …
