The master equation for a two-level atom interacting with a strong coherent field and damped into a reservoir formed by a finite bandwidth squeezed vacuum is derived. The master equation extends the Yeoman and Barnett approach to a non-zero detuning of the driving field from the atomic resonance and allows to discuss the role of squeezing bandwidth and the detuning in the level shifts, widths and intensities of spectral lines. The approach is valid for arbitrary values of the Rabi frequency and detuning but for the squeezing bandwidths larger than the natural linewidth in order to satisfy the Markov approximation.

Electromagnetic Waves In Disordered Dielectric Media: Coupled-Dipole Model, Arkadiusz Orlowski, Marian Rusek

An effective approach to multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves by disordered dielectric media is developed. A self-consistent energy-conserving coupled-dipole model is used. Applications to the Anderson localization of electromagnetic waves are presented. A complete set of Maxwell's equations is used to describe the propagation of waves and the vector character of the electromagnetic field is fully taken into account.

Gauge Theory Of Phase And Scale, Marek Pawlowski

Old Weyl's the idea of scale recalibration freedom and Infeld's and van der Waerden's (IW) ideas concerning geometrical interpretation of natural spinor phase gauge symmetry are discussed in the context of modern models of fundamental particle interactions. It is argued that (IW) gauge symmetry can be naturaly identified with the U(1) symmetry of the Weinberg-Salam model. It is also argued that there are no serious reasons to reject Weyl's gauge theory from consideration. Its inclusion enriches the original Weinberg-Salam theory and leads to prediction of new phenomena that do not contradict experiments.

It is substantiated that spin is a notion associated with the group of internal symmetry that is tightly connected with the geometrical structure of spacetime. The wave equation for the description of a particle with spin one half is proposed. On this ground it is shown that the spin of electron is exhibited through the quantum number and accordingly the Dirac equation describes properties of particles with the projection of spin \pm \hbar/2. The effects arising from accelerated and decelerated motion of charged point particles inside a medium are studied. It is shown explicitly that, in addition to the bremsstrahlung and Cherenkov shock wave, the electromagnetic shock wave arising from the charge velocity exceeding the medium light velocity should be observed. This shock wave has the same singularity as the Cherenkov one and therefore, it is more singular than the bremsstrahlung shock wave. The space-time regions where these shock waves exist and conditionsunder which they appear are determined.

We discuss gauge freedom within the scope of the enlarged Helmholtz theorem and Neumann-Debye decomposition and then demonstrate its realization for the multipole expansion of a conserved electromagnetic current. The exact solution to the latter problem was obtained in 1974, but answers to some purely mathematical questions raised by I.B. French and Y. Shimamoto [1] about 40 years ago are given in this paper for the first time.

Influence Of Electrical Field On Pulsed Laser Beam Welding Of Stainless Steel (304), Salah A. H. Fawzi̇, Raz N. Ari̇f

Pulsed laser beam welding experiment were carried out on stainless steel (SUS 304), using vertical and horizontal electric fields of different intensities to study its effectiveness on the welding process, regarding depth and weld quality. Pulsed Nd: YAG laser emitting 10 ms pulses in the TEM_{00} mode at 1.06 \mu m wave length was employed, microstructure of welded zone and defect were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Tensile test and microhardness measurements were carried out to evaluate the weld quality. Welding by this method increased the efficiency tremendously and a depth increase of 85% was achieved.

We investigated the effect of ^{60}Co \gamma-irradiation (doses from 10^2 to 2 \times 10^6 Gy), both without and with heat annealing, on silicon IMPATT diode parameters. It is shown that such treatments improve the diode characteristics (particularly decrease the reverse current and increase both the output and the diffusion length of the minority charge carriers) due to radiation-enhanced processes.

In this short note we summarize some of the work of our thesis, which is also reported elsewhere in detail. We have examined the one loop quantum corrections to the W pair production in the electron positron annihilation in the context of supersymmetric electroweak theory. We have adopted the On Mass Shell Renormalization scheme of Sakakibara and previously demonstrated the consistency of this scheme. The relevant analytic results are written out. We discuss the constraints on the Z^{\prime} model parameters coming from Z-pole and low-energy \nu_{\mu}-e scattering data in the frame work of GUT-motivated models. We find that when the coupling constant of the extra U(1) is small (large) the parameter space is mainly determined by the Z-pole (the low-energy \nu_{\mu}-e scattering) data.

A modified system of equations of electrodynamics of continuous media has been obtained. Beside the Lagrangian system an alternative gauge-like formalism has been developed to introduce the toroid moment contributions in the obtained equations. The two potential formalism that was worked out by us earlier has been developed further where along with the two vector potentials we introduce two scalar potentials thus taking into account all four basic equations of electromagnetism.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia (Greens Creek) as well as a large portion of the North Atlantic coastline is characterized by estuarine systems not dominated by large river systems. Instead, small freshwater creeks influence many coastal systems yet little information has been documented on their ecological significance. Conditions are given which are necessary and sufficient to ensure invariance of an M-sequence under periodic rearrangement. In conjunction with a certain uniformity property of polynomial coefficients, these conditions yield a simple method by which complex Hadamard matrices with cyclic core can be constructed. In such cases, a real p-ary linear cyclic error correcting code may be associated with the complex Hadamard matrix.

Sediment-associated contaminants released by past mining activities in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc District in southwest Missouri pose a long-term risk to water quality. This study uses sedimentological and geochemical analyses to describe the relationships between mine contaminant dispersal and historical sedimentation patterns of the Honey Creek watershed ( 176 km2) which drains the Aurora Sub-district along the eastern boundary of the Tri-State District. The effects of urbanization and continual human disturbance on the plant and avian communities of Forest Park and forested lands surrounding Portland, Oregon, were studied. I examined characteristics of plant and avian communities at 25 sites, 24 which were in Forest Park and surrounding areas and one which was in the Ancient Forest Preserve (old-growth stand) northwest of Forest Park. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, ANOV A, and Bonferonni/Dunn. Seven variables were selected representing different urbanization gradients. An additional covariable coded for the old-growth stand, allowing it to be used as a control.

This study evaluated the ability of Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) to balance the daily photosynthetic deficit by mobilization of carbon reserves stored in below-ground tissues during a period of extreme winter light limitation. A quantitative understanding of the mobilization process and its limitations is essential to the development of robust models predicting minimum light levels required to maintain healthy seagrass populations. This study investigated the selenium (Se) requirements of three phytoplankton species which commonly bloom in southern Australian estuaries. The present study showed that the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham had an obligate requirement for Se (IV) in culture. After two transfers (~ 4 weeks ≈ 7 generations) in Se-deficient seawater medium, this phytoplankton species exhibited a decline in growth rate (25%) and biomass yield (90%), while complete cessation of cell division occurred under prolonged (8 weeks ≈ 12 generations) Se starvation. In March 1998 we measured iron in the upper water column and conducted iron- and nutrient-enrichment bottle-incubation experiments in the open-ocean Subantarctic region southwest of Tasmania, Australia. In the Subtropical Convergence Zone (∼42°S, 142°E), silicic acid concentrations were low (< 1.5μM) in the upper water column, whereas pronounced vertical gradients in dissolved iron concentration (0.12-0.84 nM) were observed., presumably reflecting the interleaving of Subtropical and Subantarctic waters, and mineral aerosol input. Results of a bottle-incubation experiment performed at this location indicate that phytoplankton growth rates were limited by iron deficiency within the iron-poor layer of the euphotic zone. In the Subantarctic water mass (∼46.8°S, 142°E), low concentrations of dissolved iron (0.05-0.11nM) and silicic acid (< 1μM) were measured throughout the upper water column, and our experimental results indicate that algal growth was limited by iron deficiency. These observations suggest that availability of dissolved iron is a primary factor limiting phytoplankton growth over much of the Subantarctic Southern Ocean in the late summer and autumn.

The use of curve fitting for the analysis and interpretation of voltammetric data obtained while working with micro electrodes is discussed as a useful exercise for introducing students to the principle of problem solving using least-squares curve-fitting techniques. This paper suggests an intelligent controller for an automated vehicle planning its own trajectory based on sensor and communication data. The intelligent controller is designed using the learning stochastic automata theory. Using the data received from on-board sensors, two automata (one for lateral actions, one for longitudinal actions) can learn the best possible action to avoid collisions. The system has the advantage of being able to work in unmodeled stochastic environments, unlike adaptive control methods or expert systems. Simulations for simultaneous lateral and longitudinal control of a vehicle provide encouraging results

Satus Creek provides critical habitat for the Yakima River Basin steelhead. A diverse community of riparian vegetation is important for healthy fish habitat; vegetation changes can affect shade, cover, channel structure, water quality, and food availability. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and illustrate riparian vegetation change, both temporally and spatially, along three separate reaches of Satus Creek. A Geographic Information Systems approach was applied to assess the vegetation change by comparing plant species composition and density on 1949 and 1995 aerial photographs. This paper surveys recent developments and provides Monte Carlo comparison on various tests proposed for cointegration in panel data. In particular, tests for two panel models, varying intercepts and varying slopes, and varying intercepts and common slopes are presented from the literature with a total of seven tests being simulated. On The Estimation And Inference Of A Cointegrated Regression In Panel Data, Chihwa Kao

The main contribution of this paper is to add to the literature by suggesting a dynamic OLS (DOLS) estimator and providing a serious comparison of the finite sample properties of the OLS, fully modified OLS (FMOLS), and DOLS estimators in panel cointegrated regression models. Monte Carlo results illustrate the sampling behavior of the proposed estimators and show that (1) the OLS estimator has a non-negligible bias in finite samples, (2) the FMOLS estimator does not improve over the OLS estimator in general, and (3) the DOLS outperforms both the OLS and FMOLS estimators.
