Acute-care hospitals have come under increased pressure to reduce costs while increasing the quality of providing care. Historically, increasing costs of providing care has had the greatest impact on the reduction of operating margins necessary to expand capital and for repayment of debt. Facilities can benchmark internal historical data to identify areas where costs have increased and are able to explain the factors that contribute to the increases. Aerial hunting is commonly used by agriculture agencies in the Intermountain West to reduce coyote (Canis latrans) predation on domestic sheep. We assessed the effect of aerial hunting of coyotes on sheep losses to coyotes, and the need for corrective predation management (hours of work, device nights) on the same pastures when sheep arrived for the subsequent summer grazing season (3-6 months after aerial hunting). Comparisons were made between paired pastures with (treated) and without (untreated) winter aerial hunting from helicopters. Average (x ± SE) pasture size was 45.2 ± 14.1 km2 (n = 21) for treated …

Brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis, BTS), inadvertently introduced to the island of Guam shortly after World War II, have had catastrophic effects on the native fauna of this U.S. territory. We used radio-telemetry to monitor daytime refugia and nightly movements of 60 BTS (30 during each of two seasonal periods) to determine the extent of nightly, weekly, and monthly movements. Eighty-three percent of subadult daytime sightings were in trees, compared to only 49% of adult daytime sightings. Most measures of movement did not vary with seasonal period, sex, or age class. There is a continuing need to develop improved repellent formulations to protect buried cable installations from damage by problem wildlife. We evaluated 2.0% mass/mass levels of capsaicin and denatonium benzoate in a polybutene carrier material (Indopol®) and an aboveground, rodent-deer plastic mesh barrier (Vexar®) for reducing gnawing by northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) on communications cable (RG-8U). When treatments were applied as surface coatings, neither capsaicin nor denatonium samples were lower (P > 0.05) in measnres of cable damage compared to control (Indopol® alone) or samples treated with Vexar® plastic mesh. This experimental study has revealed and investigated many of the physical issues that affect accurate measurement of the surface resistance for small samples consisting of superconducting niobium films on copper substrates. It is believed that this work provides the groundwork for future research directed towards solving this important problem. Accurate measurement of surface resistance for such samples is needed to allow the rapid evaluation and optimization of the deposition parameters necessary for manufacturing low-loss superconducting niobium films.

Enterprise based object oriented (OO) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling makes it possible to build the needed visual environments to organize people, technologies and activities (Arias, 1999d). In our modeling approach, the focus is on "things and relationships between things" described in commonly used terms. Bar-Natan used Chinese characters to show that finite type invariants classify string links up to homotopy. In this paper, I construct the correct spaces of chord diagrams and Chinese characters for links up to homotopy. I use these spaces to show that the only rational finite type invariants of link homotopy are the pairwise linking numbers of the components.

Tracking an object's location with inertial sensors works well over short time periods, but sensor drift and errors in integration cause errors to accumulate exponentially. Images, in contrast, work very well to determine a camera's location provided that the camera moves slowly. I received fellowship funding to work on a hybrid image and inertial tracker. The idea was to use data from the image sensors to correct errors and drift in the inertial sensors. The computer vision community has expended a great deal of energy in pursuing motion tracking from images. This area of research is also related to compositing …

To create an effective illusion of virtual objects coexisting with the real world, see-through HMD-based Augmented Reality techniques supple1nent the user's view with images of virtual objects. We introduce here a new paradigm, Spatially Augmented Reality (SAR), where virtual objects are rendered directly within or on the user's physical space. A key benefit of SAR is that the user does not need to wear a head-mounted display. The evaluation was designed to track how the Land Conservation District Committees (LCDCs) in the Peel Harvey Catchment utilised the AGWEST Revegetation Monitoring Activity, and to determine if AGWEST's objectives of the project were being met It also gave the community a chance to provide feedback on their experiences with the Monitoring Activity, and suggest future changes

This report presents a summary of the key findings from a mailed survey to 2,000 landholders in the South West Region of Western Australia in 2006. The survey gathered information on the key social and economic factors affecting landholder decision-making about the adoption of practices expected to improve the management of natural resources in the region. The response rate for the survey was 69.4%.
The South West Catchment Council, Western Australian Department of Agriculture and Food and the Bureau of Rural Sciences were key project partners. Funding was from a mix of national, state and regional programmes, including the Natural …

The reaction of diethyl 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF followed by hydrolysis provided 2,5-di(allyloxy)terephthalic acid. The conversion of 2,5-di (allyloxy)terephthalic acid to 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5-di(allyloxy)benzene in PPSE was unsuccessful. However, the reaction of 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- dihydroxybenzene with allyl bromide/K2CO3 provided 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene. DSC analysis indicated that 1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)-2,5- di(allyloxy)benzene undergoes a Claisen rearrangement to the corresponding diallyl product. The synthesis of 2-allyloxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene was carried out using 2-hydroxy-1,4-di(2-benzoxazolyl)benzene as starting material. DSC analysis was inconclusive with respect to a Claisen rearrangement. The reaction of 2-allyloxybenzoic acid with 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane in PPSE was unsuccessful but the reaction of 2,2-bis(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-benzoxazolyl)-1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane with allyl bromide/K2CO3 in DMF provided 2,2-bis(2-(2- …

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

The authors present herein an analysis of a single-Doppler velocity retrieval (SDVR) technique whereby the unobserved wind components are determined from single-Doppler radar data. The analysis is designed to provide information about the behavior and/or sensitivity of the SDVR scheme as a function of various internal and external parameters as well as about observational errors and weights. Results presented for retrieval of both the mean and local flow indicate that the SDVR breaks down if the reflectivity gradient vanishes or if a reflectivity isoline is locally perpendicular to the radar beam. The ongoing movement to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics and science began as an effort targeting grades K-12. This movement, however, also has significant implications for institutions of higher education, especially in the area of teacher preparation. Northeast Louisiana University has utilized an extensive system of support, including vital National Science Foundation funding, to redesign its science curriculum for elementary education majors. A study is made for the magnetic excitations and their Anderson localization properties for a Heisenberg ferromagnet with random anisotropic fields. The system is assumed to be in a strong applied field so that complete spin alignment is established. The magnetic excitations, i.e., the harmonic spin waves, are computed using coherent-field-anisotropy approximation (a version of coherent potential approximation of the electronic problem). The spin wave shift and damping are calculated using the computed coherent field which is a complex function of energy approximating the random medium as a mean field level. It's advantage over the other modeling techniques to confine the solution parameters, especially the spot latitudes are described. The lateral coupling of waveguiding structures in both [011] and [0\bar{1}1] directions is studied using embedded selective area epitaxy by Chemical Beam Epitaxy. All growth steps are carried out under the same growth conditions on (100) lnP substrates misoriented by 0.5° towards (111)B. Both planar and selectively grown material exhibits bright luminescence and narrow PL line widths (8 meV FWHM at 4K), up to the lateral junction. Moreover, no degradation of the original material properties is observed after regrowth. SEM images show very flat layers and excellent lateral coupling for all four types of junctions. An Investigation Of Electrical Properties Of Porous Silicon, G. Algün, M. Ç. Arikan

In this work, electrical properties of porous silicon structures, formed with electrochemical anodization in HF acid solution under two different current densities, were investigated. In these experiments, Sb doped (111)-oriented n-type silicon samples with 0.006-0.015 \Omega cm resistivity was used. Samples were anodized in a solution of 38% HF and 99% C_2H_2OH at 1:1 ratio for 15 minutes. After anodization, the structures that formed at low current density (J = 5 mA/cm^2) was compared with structures that formed at high current density (J = 30 mA/cm^2). Both structures and electrical properties were investigated.

Interference Of Charged Particles In A Vector Potential With Vanishing Magnetic Field, İsmai̇l Hakki Duru

An interference experiment in a magnetic field free region with non vanishing vector potential created by two perpendicularly intersecting planes carrying uniform currents is discussed. The relation of this configuration to the Aharonov-Bohm potential is examined. An experimental set up which is finite in the direction of electronic motion is studied.

In the framework of classical electrodynamics elementary particles are treated as capacitors. The electrostatic potentials satisfy equations of the Schrödinger type. An interesting "quantization condition" for elementary charges is derived.
