Analysis Of Hydric Pine Flatwood Ephemeral Pool Macroinvertebrate And Crustacean Assemblages Along A Temporal And Spatial Gradient From A Hypothesized Colonial Source, Henry Leon Griffith

Theses and Dissertations

A survey of the macroinvertebrate and crustacean assemblages in hydric pine flatwood wetlands during fill and drawdown periods was conducted from September to November 1998, in Lee County, Florida. Physical and chemical information, relationships between community composition and physical and chemical conditions were analyzed and a monitoring plan for detecting impacts of declining water supply in hydric pine flatwood communities was proposed. In addition, possible sources of colonists and patterns of community assemblage were investigated. Twelve ephemeral pools and three associated intermittently exposed cypress heads were sampled monthly, over three months, using 1 D-ring benthic sweep, 2 Hester-Dendy multiple plate …

General Formulation Of The Semirelativistic Approach To Atomic Sum Rules, P.T. Leung, Scott M. Cohen Jun 1998

General Formulation Of The Semirelativistic Approach To Atomic Sum Rules, P.T. Leung, Scott M. Cohen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A general scheme is presented for obtaining systematic relativistic corrections to quantum-mechanical sum rules for various calculations in atomic physics. The single-particle picture and the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation [Phys. Rev. 78, 29 (1950)] are adopted to derive such corrections. Results are obtained for the ldquogeneralized Bethe sums, rdquo which include all higher moments of the energy transfer, and explicit results are given to the lowest order of relativistic corrections.

Gps Measurements Across The Northern Caribbean Plate Boundary Zone: Impact Of Postseismic Relaxation Following Historic Earthquakes, Fred F. Pollitz, Timothy H. Dixon Jun 1998

Gps Measurements Across The Northern Caribbean Plate Boundary Zone: Impact Of Postseismic Relaxation Following Historic Earthquakes, Fred F. Pollitz, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

GPS measurements in the northern Caribbean suggest that the rate of Caribbean plate motion relative to North America is about 10 mm/yr faster than predicted by global plate motion model NUVEL-1A. Several of the key sites used in the GPS study are located in the Dominican Republic, near the rupture zones of large earthquakes in 1946 and in the previous two centuries. Postseismic relaxation of the crust and upper mantle is a possible explanation for the plate velocity discrepancy. We explore a range of fault mechanisms and crustal and mantle rheology to place an upper bound on postseismic relaxation effects. …

Ranking And Explaining The Scholarly Impact Of Law Schools, Theodore Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells Jun 1998

Ranking And Explaining The Scholarly Impact Of Law Schools, Theodore Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article measures 32 law schools' academic reputations by citations to their faculties' works. Yale, Chicago, Harvard, and Stanford rank alone at the top. Seven or eight schools compose the next group. We also explore the relation between scholarly impact and entry-level or lateral hire status, gender, minority status, subjects taught, and years in teaching. Lateral hires systematically outperform entry-level hires. We find no substantial evidence of male-female differences. We find some evidence of lower citations for minority females, but this difference is largely attributable to those in teaching fewer than 8 years. For faculty members in teaching more than …

Location Independent Names For Nomadic Computers, David Steere, Mark Morrissey, Peter Geib, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole Jun 1998

Location Independent Names For Nomadic Computers, David Steere, Mark Morrissey, Peter Geib, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent advances in the Domain Name System (DNS) and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) have enabled a new approach to supporting mobile users: location independent naming. In this approach, machines use the same hostname from any internet location, but use an IP address that corresponds to their current location. We describe a protocol that implements location independent naming for nomadic computers, i.e., machines that do not need transparent mobility. Our protocol allows hosts to move across security domains, uses existing protocols, and preserves existing trust relationships. Therefore, it preserves the performance and security of normal IP for nomadic computers …

A Study Of The Knowledge Structure Of Expert, Intermediate, And Novice Subjects In The Domain Of Physics, Jennifer L. Discenna Jun 1998

A Study Of The Knowledge Structure Of Expert, Intermediate, And Novice Subjects In The Domain Of Physics, Jennifer L. Discenna

Dissertations

The objective of this research was to investigate the knowledge structure in physics by describing the knowledge of experts, intermediates, and novices. A review of the literature on expertise, physics knowledge, and conceptual structure provided two competing representations of physics knowledge: one defined as a hierarchy of models arranged from general to specific models, the second defined by theories which link knowledge together.

In order to investigate the two representations described above, a reiterative categorization task was employed. This task resulted in a hierarchical sort with larger piles at the top of the hierarchy and smaller piles at the bottom …

Surface Models Of Finite Geometries, Ramon Manuel Figueroa-Centeno Jun 1998

Surface Models Of Finite Geometries, Ramon Manuel Figueroa-Centeno

Dissertations

The standard non-Euclidean geometries, hyperbolic geometry and elliptical geometry, both arise by negating the parallel postulate of Euclid. Both these geometries share with Euclidean geometries an infinitude of points and lines. But also possible are many finite geometries. Among these are the class of projective geometries PG(m,q) of projective dimension m (m > 2) and the k-configurations. These mathematical objects, although primarily geometric in nature, provide related structures of combinatorial interest: block designs. These have applications in scheduling problems and the design of experiments for statistical analysis. Recently, A. T. White has added a topological flavor to the study …

The Effect Of Convection On A Propagating Front With A Liquid Product: Comparison Of Theory And Experiments, B. Mccaughey, John A. Pojman, C. Simmons, V.A. Volpert Jun 1998

The Effect Of Convection On A Propagating Front With A Liquid Product: Comparison Of Theory And Experiments, B. Mccaughey, John A. Pojman, C. Simmons, V.A. Volpert

Faculty Publications

This work is devoted to the investigation of propagating polymerization fronts converting a liquid monomer into a liquid polymer. We consider a simplified mathematical model which consists of the heat equation and equation for the depth of conversion for one-step chemical reaction and of the Navier-Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation. We fulfill the linear stability analysis of the stationary propagating front and find conditions of convective and thermal instabilities. We show that convection can occur not only for ascending fronts but also for descending fronts. Though in the latter case the exothermic chemical reaction heats the cold monomer from …

Electron Emission Following The Interaction Of Slow Highly Charged Ions With Solids, Joseph W. Mcdonald Jun 1998

Electron Emission Following The Interaction Of Slow Highly Charged Ions With Solids, Joseph W. Mcdonald

Dissertations

The interaction of highly-charged ions with surfaces involves many excitation processes of the surface atoms and the bulk material. One such process, the emission of electrons from surfaces due to the potential energy of the incident ions has been studied. The experimental results presented here confirm that the majority of electrons emitted as a result of highly-charged ions interacting with a solid surface have energies of about 20 eV. Auger processes contribute a smaller fraction of the total emitted electrons with increasing Z o f the projectile. This contribution to the total electron emission yield is found to be less …

A Basis Theorem For Perfect Sets, Marcia J. Groszek, Theodore A. Slaman

Dartmouth Scholarship

We show that if there is a nonconstructible real, then every perfect set has a nonconstructible element, answering a question of K. Prikry. This is a specific instance of a more general theorem giving a sufficient condition on a pair M ⊂ N of models of set theory implying that every perfect set in N has an element in N which is not in M.

A V And I Ccd Mosaic Survey Of The Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy, J. T. Kleyna, M. J. Geller, S. J. Kenyon, M. J. Kurtz, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We discuss a Johnson-Cousins V- and I-band CCD mosaic survey of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) to V ~ 22. We covered UMi with 27 105 × 105 overlapping CCD frames, each frame consisting of two 300 s exposures in each of V and I. We also observed several regions ~3° from UMi to obtain an estimate of contamination by galaxies and Galactic stars. We report the first H-R diagram of an entire dSph. Separation of dwarf stars from foreground stars by color allows a robust estimation of the structural parameters of UMi. We examine …

Finite Size Scaling In The Thin Film Limit, C. Waldfield, D. Welipitiya, T. Mcavoy, Peter A. Dowben, Elio Vescovo Jun 1998

Finite Size Scaling In The Thin Film Limit, C. Waldfield, D. Welipitiya, T. Mcavoy, Peter A. Dowben, Elio Vescovo

Peter Dowben Publications

The thickness dependent spin-polarized electronic structure of strained thin and ultrathin films of Gd is characterized by a distinct change in the critical exponent λ in the formalism of finite size scaling. The reduced critical exponent in the ultrathin films can be correlated to the increased dominance of the surface magnetic structure and the increasing paramagnetic-like behavior of the bulk. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

Immobilization Diffusion In R2Fe17 Nitrides, Ralph Skomski, S. Wirth Jun 1998

Immobilization Diffusion In R2Fe17 Nitrides, Ralph Skomski, S. Wirth

Ralph Skomski Publications

The diffusion of nitrogen in R2Fe17 intermetallics is investigated by an approach which reconciles the solid-solution and immobilization theories of nitrogen diffusion. It turns out that two-sublattice diffusions may yield sharp concentration profiles but leave the phase structure of the nitride unchanged. Beside the reaction time and a local relaxation time there exists a global relaxation time which governs the smoothing of concentration gradients. Due to the large number of unknown energy parameters involved it is difficult to make quantitative predictions, but in general the diffusion behavior depends on factors such as the use of N2 …

Observation Of Oscillations Between Degenerate Bound-State Configurations In Rapidly Autoionizing Two-Electron Atoms, M. B. Campbell, Thomas J. Bensky, Robert R. Jones Jun 1998

Observation Of Oscillations Between Degenerate Bound-State Configurations In Rapidly Autoionizing Two-Electron Atoms, M. B. Campbell, Thomas J. Bensky, Robert R. Jones

Physics

The oscillation between bound-state configurations in a rapidly autoionizing three-body Coulomb system has been directly observed. Using a 500-fsec laser pulse, calcium atoms are excited to the pure 4p3/215d two-electron configuration at an energy greater than 3 eV above the ionization limit. As a result of configuration interaction, the electrons scatter coherently into multiple bound and continuum configurations. The oscillation between the degenerate 4p1/2n′d and 4p3/2nd modes as well as autoionization into 4s1/2εl, 3d3/2εl, and 3d5/2εl …

Estimate Of Bottom And Surface Stress During A Spring-Neap Tide Cycle By Dynamical Assimilation Of Tide Gauge Observatons In The Chesapeake Bay, Y. H. Spitz, J. M. Klinck Jun 1998

Estimate Of Bottom And Surface Stress During A Spring-Neap Tide Cycle By Dynamical Assimilation Of Tide Gauge Observatons In The Chesapeake Bay, Y. H. Spitz, J. M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

Dynamical assimilation of surface elevation from tide gauges is investigated to estimate the bottom drag coefficient and surface stress as a first step in improving modeled tidal and wind-driven circulation in the Chesapeake Bay. A two-dimensional shallow water model and an adjoint variational method with a limited memory quasi-Newton optimization algorithm are used to achieve this goal. Assimilation of tide gauge observations from 10 permanent stations in the Bay and use of a two-dimensional model adequately estimate the bottom drag coefficient, wind stress, and surface elevation at the Bay mouth. Subsequent use of these estimates in the circulation model considerably …

A Mössbauer Spectral Study Of Tb₂Fe₁₇ And The Tb₂Fe₁₇₋ₓsiₓ Solid Solutions, Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Peter C. Ezekwenna, Fernande Grandjean, D. P. Middleton, K. H. J. Buschow

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra of a series of rhombohedral Tb2Fe17-xSix solid solutions, with x equal to 0, 1, 2, and 3, have been measured as a function of temperature. Although the spectra of Tb2Fe17 change substantially upon cooling from 295 to 85 K, it has been possible to fit them with a consistent seven sextet model corresponding to a basal magnetization. The spectral analysis yields reasonable hyperfine parameters and the expected changes with temperature. The resulting weighted average effective iron recoil mass of 66 g/mol and the Mössbauer temperature of 395 K are …

Utilization Of The Meteorological Data In The Prediction Of The Potential Of The Renewable Energy Resources In The United Arab Emirates, Nasser A.N. Albaloushi

Theses

There has been an increasing world interest in clean renewable energies ( mainly radiation and wind energies ) due to the minimal environmental problems resulting from their use. The continuous depletion of conventional energy resources and the growing world concern about the environment have lead to extensive research and development efforts in order to improve the energy conversion efficiencies and economics of devices utilizing solar energy. However, it is important to identify first the potential of available energy resources in the site where renewable energy is to be utilized.

Meteorological information are critical to the assessment of the energy resources …
