Electron Transfer Catalysis Of The Hydrogenolysis Of Acyl Dicarbonyl Cyclopentadienyliron Complexes By Tributyltin Hydride, Christian Amatore, Mekki Bayachou, Olivier Buriez, Jean Noel Verpeaux Sep 1998

Electron Transfer Catalysis Of The Hydrogenolysis Of Acyl Dicarbonyl Cyclopentadienyliron Complexes By Tributyltin Hydride, Christian Amatore, Mekki Bayachou, Olivier Buriez, Jean Noel Verpeaux

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The conversion of acyl dicarbonyl cyclopentadienyliron compounds Cp(CO)2Fe(COR) into aldehydes is not straightforward. It is shown here, mainly from electrochemical results, that the hydrogenolysis of the metal acyl bond can be efficiently achieved by trialkytin hydrides under very mild conditions, according to a chain reaction process initiated by an electron transfer to the acyl complex. The expected aldehyde is formed together with the heterobinuclear iron-tin complex.

Dynamics Of The Conformal Mode And Simplicial Gravity, Simon Catterall, Emil Mottola, T. Bhattacharya Sep 1998

Dynamics Of The Conformal Mode And Simplicial Gravity, Simon Catterall, Emil Mottola, T. Bhattacharya

Physics - All Scholarship

We review the derivation of the Liouville action in 2DQG via the trace anomaly and emphasize how a similar approach can be used to derive an effective action describing the long wavelength dynamics of the conformal factor in 4D. In 2D we describe how to make an explicit connection between dynamical triangulations and this continuum theory, and present results which confirm the equivalance of the two approaches. By reconstructing a lattice conformal mode from DT simulations it should be possible to test this equivalence in 4D also.

Wave-Vector-Dependent Exchange Splitting In A Local Moment System, C. Waldfried, T. Mcavoy, D. Welipitiya, Takashi Komesu, Peter A. Dowben, Elio Vescovo

Peter Dowben Publications

Wave-vector-dependent exchange splitting in a local moment system The electronic structure of strained thin films of Gd has been studied with spin- and angle-resolved photoemission and spin-polarized inverse photoemission. The spin-dependent electronic structure is dominated by a very distinct k dependence of the exchange splitting. The surface magnetic structure is observed to be different from that of the bulk, as indicated by the different electronic structure and a much higher surface Curie temperature. The 4% strain within the Gd films results in an enhanced Curie temperature.

Catalogs Of Temperatures And [Fe/H] Averages For Evolved G And K Stars, B. J. Taylor Sep 1998

Catalogs Of Temperatures And [Fe/H] Averages For Evolved G And K Stars, B. J. Taylor

Faculty Publications

A catalog of mean values of [Fe/H] for evolved G and K stars is described. The zero point for the catalog entries has been established by using differential analyses. Literature sources for those entries are included in the catalog. The mean values are given with rms errors and numbers of degrees of freedom, and a simple example of the use of these statistical data is given. For a number of the stars with entries in the catalog, temperatures have been determined. A separate catalog containing those data is briefly described.

Optical Implementation Of The Wavelet Transform By Using A Bacteriorhodopsin Film As An Optically Addressed Spatial Light Modulator, Joby Joseph, F. J. Aranda, D.V.G.L.N. Rao, B. S. Decristofano, B. R. Kimball, M. Nakashima

Physics Faculty Publications

An optical system utilizing the photoinduced dichroism in a bacteriorhodopsin film has been demonstrated for the optical implementation of wavelet transforms. The dichroism, induced by the image of a wavelet filter on a bacteriorhodopsin film leads to polarization rotation of the Fourier components of an image. The polarization-rotated Fourier components of an input scene are analyzed with a polarizer to give the wavelet transform components. The dichroism is induced with beams whose profiles are determined by wavelet filters in order to perform the optical wavelet transform.

Validity Of Tolman’S Equation: How Large Should A Droplet Be?, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng, A.K. Shchekin

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Surface tension and the length δ (distance between the Gibbs surface of tension Rs and the equimolar surface Re) of simple liquid droplet (Lennard-Jones and Yukawa) are computed over a wide range of droplet sizes up to about 4x106 molecules. The study is based on the Gibbs theory of capillarity combined with the density–functional approach to gas–liquid nucleation. Since this method provides behavior of the surface tension fully consistent with the tension of the planner surface, the constant in Tolman’s equation δx can be determined unequivocally from the asymptotic behavior of σ s . Comparison …

Physics & Astronomy

In January 1997 a large fleet of NASA and US military satellites provided the most complete observations to date of the changes in >2 MeV electrons during a geomagnetic storm. Observations at geosynchronous orbit revealed a somewhat unusual two-peaked enhancement in relativistic electron fluxes [ Reeves et al., 1998]. In the heart of the radiation belts at L ≈ 4, however, there was a single enhancement followed by a gradual decay. Radial profiles from the POLAR and GPS satellites revealed three distinct phases. (1) In the acceleration phase electron fluxes increased simultaneously at L ≈ 4–6. (2) During the …

Attractors For Non-Compact Semigroups Via Energy Equations, Ioana Moise, Ricardo Rosa, Xiaoming Wang Sep 1998

Attractors For Non-Compact Semigroups Via Energy Equations, Ioana Moise, Ricardo Rosa, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The energy-equation approach used to prove the existence of the global attractor by establishing the so-called asymptotic compactness property of the semigroup is considered, and a general formulation that can handle a number of weakly damped hyperbolic equations and parabolic equations on either bounded or unbounded spatial domains is presented. as examples, three specific and physically relevant problems are considered, namely the flows of a second-grade fluid, the flows of a Newtonian fluid in an infinite channel past an obstacle, and a weakly damped, forced Korteweg-de Vries equation on the whole line.

Applications Of Secondary Electron Energy- And Angular-Distributions To Spacecraft Charging, Neal Nickles, R. E. Davies Sep 1998

Applications Of Secondary Electron Energy- And Angular-Distributions To Spacecraft Charging, Neal Nickles, R. E. Davies

All Physics Faculty Presentations

Secondary electron (SE) emission from spacecraft surfaces as a result of energetic electron bombardment is a key process in the electrical charging of spacecraft. It has been suggested that incorporating more complete knowledge of the energy- and angular-distributions of secondary electrons is necessary to fully model how SE emission and spacecraft charging are affected by re-adsorption of low energy electrons in the presence of charge-induced electrostatic fields and ambient magnetic fields in the spacecraft environment. We present data for such energy- and angular-distributions from sputtered, polycrystalline gold surfaces. The data are compared to empirical SE emission models and found to …

Track Structure Model For Radial Distributions Of Electron Spectra And Event Spectra From High-Energy Ions, F. A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, J. W. Wilson Sep 1998

Track Structure Model For Radial Distributions Of Electron Spectra And Event Spectra From High-Energy Ions, F. A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, J. W. Wilson

Robert Katz Publications

An analytic method is described for evaluating the average radial electron spectrum and the radial and total frequency-event spectrum for high-energy ions. For high-energy ions, indirect events make important contributions to frequency-event spectra. The method used for evaluating indirect events is to fold the radial electron spectrum with measured frequency-event spectrum for photons or electrons. The contribution from direct events is treated using a spatially restricted linear energy transfer (LET). We find that high-energy heavy ions have a significantly reduced frequency-averaged lineal energy (YF) compared to LET, while relativistic protons have a significantly increased YF and dose-averaged lineal energy (YD) …

The results are expected to provide the first complete seismic images of the deep crustal structure for a better understanding of the Taiwan orogeny and subduction-collision system. The experiment consists of three profiles, one along each of the central and southern cross-island highways and another on the south-link highway of the island. For the first two lines, 35 three-component portable seismographs were deployed along each of the 116 and 135 km-long profiles onshore, …

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele Sep 1998

Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Arkansas is fortunate to have outstanding water resources, especially in terms of water quality. However, this is not to say that there are no problems. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) in cooperation with other state and federal agencies is characterizing our water resources and providing data important to the wise use of these resources. One wise use of our water resources is to mitigate the impact of non-point sources of pollution on water quality through the use of best management practices. These proceedings address not only the characterization of the quality of ground and surface water but also address …

The Design And Evaluation Of Distributed Graph-Theoretic Heuristics For Computing Pairwise Interactions Of Moving Entities, Darren R. Law

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

In recent years the focus of training simulations, particularly those in the defense domain, has been on increasing the number of simulated entities. This focus, coupled with the requirement for geographically distributed training sites, has led to increased interest in distributed simulation of the battlefield environment. The large efforts involved in the development of the DIS (Distributed Interactive Simulation) protocol and the HLA (High Level Architecture) have attempted to address these DoD (Department of Defense) requirements in several ways. The cost of con1puting the interactions between pairs of simulated entities frequently dominates system execution time. The difficulty of evaluating these …
