Fluorescence Analysis For Multi-Site Aluminum Binding To Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer

Natural organic matter (NOM) samples isolated from different water sources in Norway were compared using their fluorescence properties. Fluorescence surfaces were observed at pH 4.36 and deconvoluted using SIMPLISMA (Windig and Guilment 1991). There were a total of seven different fluorophores observed for these samples and each sampling site had between four and six ofthe fluorescent components. These components were observed to bind Al during titrations at the same pH. Multiresponse titration curves were fit using the method of Smith and Kramer (1998) and most of the binding strengths are similar to values for Suwannee River fulvic acid (1ogK’ between …

We have performed the first search for CP violation in tau lepton decay. CP violation in lepton decay does not occur in the minimal standard model but can occur in extensions such as the multi- Higgs doublet model. It appears as a characteristic difference between the τ- and τ+ decay angular distributions for the semileptonic decay modes such as τ- → K0 π-ν. We define an observable asymmetry to exploit this and find no evidence for any CP violation.

We have studied the two-center effect (TCE) in ion-atom ionization by measuring the energy and angular distributions of the double-differential cross sections (DDCSs) (d2σ/dεdΩ) of the low-energy electrons emitted in a collision of He atoms with 2.5 MeV/nucleon C6+ ions. The electrons with energies between 0.1 and 300 eV were detected for 13 different emission angles between 15° and 160°. From the measured DDCSs we have deduced the single differential cross sections such as dσ/dΩ and dσ/dε and the total cross section. The data have been …

We present solitary-wave solutions of two and three coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations when the waves propagate in the normal and anomalous group-velocity dispersion regions. A wave of the form sech2 £-2/3 is found, which, together with two known waves of the forms tanh £ sech £ and sech2 £, are shown to form a new generation of complementary waves. The implication of this wave set and its applications to coupled solitary-wave propagation is discussed.

We have developed a compact closed-form solution of the band transport model for high-contrast gratings in photogalvanic crystals. Our solution predicts the effect of the photoconductivity and the electric field grating enhancement due to the photogalvanic effect. We predict a pronounced dependence of the steady-state photogalvanic current on the contrast of the interference pattern and an increase of holographic storage time due to the enhancement of the photoconductivity grating contrast. In the high contrast limit and a large photogalvanic effect the refractive index grating will be shifted from the position of the intensity modulation pattern, contrary to the usually adopted …

Understanding the factors that influence soil and plant nitrogen (N) spatial variability may improve our ability to develop management systems that maximize productivity and minimize environmental hazards. The objective of this study was to determine the field (65 ha) scale spatial variability of N and δ15N in soil and corn (Zea mays). Soil, grain, and stover samples were collected from grids that ranged in size from 30 by 30 m to 60 by 60 m. Unidirectional magnetic anisotropies in low-symmetry magnetic thin films such as cobalt on vicinal copper surfaces are investigated. Possible explanations of the observed uniaxial anisotropies are competing anisotropy (CA) coefficients and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Unidirectional CA is an interesting mechanism occurring in low-symmetry magnets and involves neither antiferromagnetic exchange nor spin canting. It is visible in the easy-cone regime and decides, for example, whether the preferential magnetization direction points up or down a stepped surface. In the case of Co/Cu(11n) films, however, the anisotropy direction speaks in favor of DM-type interactions.

Specific solvent effects on the electronic coupling element for electron transfer are examined using two model donor–acceptor systems (Zn2+ and Li2+) and several model “solvent” species (He, Ne, H2O, and NH3). The effects are evaluated relative to the given donor–acceptor pair without solvent present. The electronic coupling element (Hab) is found to depend strongly on the identity of the intervening solvent, with He atoms decreasing Hab, whereas H2O and NH3 significantly increase Hab. The distance dependence (essentially exponential decay) is weakly affected by a single intervening solvent atom–molecule. However, when the donor–acceptor distance increases in concert with addition of successively …

The unusual nature of the single, rapidly rotating, lithium-rich K giant HDE 233517, which is currently undergoing significant mass loss, prompted a search for giants with similar properties. High-dispersion spectroscopic observations were obtained of HD 219025, a known lithium-rich infrared-excess giant, plus 39 stars from a list of G and K giants with excess far-infrared emission. The projected rotational velocities of the vast majority of infrared-excess giants appear to be similar to those of normal G and K giants. Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) has received a great deal of attention as a tool for the separation and detection of low-molecular-mass inorganic ions. CZE is a fast growing analytical technique that uses a low-volume sample accompanied by a high detection efficiency. Since this is a fairly new analytical technique that shows tremendous promise, it should be introduced to students at the undergraduate level. We have developed a CZE experiment that is well suited for an instrumental analysis chemistry laboratory and can be modified for other species or substances.

In agricultural regions of Western Australia, salinity is spreading. This is because the area taken up by groundwater discharge is increasing as a result of increased groundwater recharge following the replacement of native vegetation systems by annual crops and pasture species. Attempts to reduce groundwater recharge are now being made as it is hoped that this will decrease the rate of land salinisation. At several sites, average recharge rates have been estimated to be from 2% to 13% of the average annu ter hydrographs from the agricultural regions indicate that at some sites recharge does not occur as small amounts …

On October 2, 1968, Congress passed the National Trails System Act. This Act called for the establishment of a system of national scenic trails "which will be extended trails so located as to provide for maximum outdoor recreation potential and for the conservation and enjoyment of the nationally significant scenic, historic, natural, or cultural qualities of the areas through which such trails may pass." As a result of the 1978 amendment to this Act, Congress designated the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) as part of the National Scenic Trail system. Many biological systems have multiple fluorophores that experience multiple depolarizing motions, requiring multiple lifetimes and correlation times to define the fluorescence intensity and anisotropy decays, respectively. To simplify analyses, an assumption often made is that all fluorophores experience all depolarizing motions. However, this assumption usually is invalid, because each lifetime is not necessarily associated with each correlation time. To help establish the correct associations and recover accurate kinetic parameters, a general kinetic scheme that can examine all possible associations is presented.
