The trapping of furbearers, particularly with steel foothold traps, has become more and more controversial. The controversy is significant because the steel trap is considered the most versatile of the various methods available for capturing furbearers (Payne 1980). Whether traps are used to reduce livestock losses by predators or to harvest furs, the controversy has gained the attention and interest of various social factions, each with differing beliefs, attitudes, and philosophies.

Research at the Pennsylvania State University was directed towards finding effective repellents to control damage caused by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and to develop a low-cost alternative to the traditional 2.4 m woven wire barrier fence, considered to be deer-proof, but too expensive for mgt agricultural uses. Fourteen repellents were screened and 9 were found to be more effective than the others. These 9 repellents were further investigated under semi-field conditions and only 1 repellent was found to be consistent in reducing deer feeding. A preliminary investigation was initiated in 1984 to determine the feasibility of an urban rabies control strategy which involved capturing, vaccinating and releasing skunks and raccoons in metropolitan Toronto, Ontario. Results indicate urban skunks and raccoons are utilizing extremely small home ranges and their movements are not extensive. Trapping data suggested a large proportion of the population of skunks and raccoons in the study area were captured during the first 4 nights of trapping. Capture data also indicated the presence of new animals in the study areas between trapping periods. The 3 study areas, which differed in human land-use classification, …

Control of rabies by reducing the density of potential vectors has been a controversial matter. Only 2 outbreaks of rabies in Europe are likely to have been completely eradicated by control, 1 in Dijon, France, in 1923, and the other in Corsica in 1943 (MacDonald 1980). Schnurrenberger et aL (1964) apparently controlled an outbreak of rabies in striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in Ohio by gassing dens and through the use of poison. Starlings (Sturnus vulgarisl were fed 3 feed sizes and 3 protein levels of swine feeds to determine metabolizable energy and assimilation efficiency. Metabolizable energy (12 kcal/g of diet consumed) and assimilation efficiency (3296 of gross energy intake) were independent of feed size. A 46% crude protein diet was 5196 assimilated and yielded more energy per gram of diet consumed than a 2196 crude protein diet which was only 35% assimilated. Starlings failed to maintain their body weight on a cracked corn diet containing 14% crude protein. Feeding behaviors of starlings due to their assimilation efficiencies are discussed and contrasted with …

This thesis examines and evaluates the new simulation language PCModel. Prior to the arrival of PCModel, simulation via computer typically resulted in pages of statistics compiled over the duration of the simulation. PCModel's approach is to simulate the model on the display before the user in real time. Additionally, user interaction is supported to allow changes to be made throughout the simulation run.

The evaluation of PCModel is accomplished through inspection of a pair of examples already simulated in a conventional simulation language. The examples show the relative strong and weak points of the language, as well as demonstrating how …

The first measurements of acoustic reflection, together with acoustic transmission at the solid-liquid interface of 4He, are used to determine the total relative acoustic energy absorption at the interface as a function of temperature. Based on these results, a new mechanism for the temperature dependence of the kinetics of growth and interface mobility is proposed.

An interactive method is presented for modifying a compromise solution to a multiobjective water resources planning stategy by changing constraining conditions on regional objectives and local variables. The method is illustrated by modifying a bicriterion, sustained groundwater withdrawal strategy for minimizing the cost of meeting regional water demand on the Arkansas Grand Prairie. The strategy was developed using a model in which the finite difference form of the two-dimensional groundwater flow equation is embedded in an optimization process. The magnetic properties of amorphous alloys with composition GdxLa72-xGa18B10 have been investigated using ac-susceptibilty and dc-magnetization techniques in the temperature range 4.2–300 K. This system shows double-transition behavior for x≳67 and paramagnetic–spin-glass transition behavior for x<67. Time-dependent magnetization effects are present in the spin-glass phase and these effects vanish in finite fields, in qualitative agreement with mean-field theory. The magnetic isotherms around both the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic and ferromagnetic–spin-glass transitions scale according to the scaling hypothesis, and these results are discussed in some detail. A magnetic phase diagram for this system is obtained from the transition temperatures determined from scaling.

A recent MNDO calculation predicts that the hypothetical P8 is more stable than the observed gas-phase species P4. The ab initio calculations reported here predict just the opposite but do establish that P8 is more stable than another experimentally known form, P2. The relative enthalpies (kcaljmol) are found to be as follows: 4P2, 72.4; 2P 4, 0; P8, 30.4. A force field analysis proves P8 has a cubic structure. The bond length, vibrational frequencies, and photoelectron spectrum of P8 are predicted.

We have examined in detail the F region plasma drifts measured at Jicamarca, Peru, during 1978–1981, a period of high solar activity, and compared these drifts with Jicamarca data taken during periods of lower activity, as well as with other equatorial zonal neutral wind and plasma drift measurements. The increase in solar activity causes larger nighttime eastward plasma drifts at Jicamarca and delays the morning reversal time from eastward nighttime to westward daytime drifts. The radar data seem to be in good agreement with nighttime neutral wind measurements made by the DE-2 satellite, but are systematically smaller than spaced receiver …

The variable star HD 136905, recently designated GX Librae, is a chromospherically active K1 III single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 11.1345 days. It has moderate strength Ca II H and K and ultraviolet emission features, while Hα is strongly in absorption. The inclination of the systems is 58°±17° and the unseen secondary is most likely a G or K dwarf. The v sin i of the primary, 32±2 km s-1, results in a minimum radius of 7.0±0.4 R_sun;. Since the star fills a substantial fraction of its Roche lobe, the double-peaked light curve seen by photometric observers is …

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Strain rates assessed from brittle fracture, associated with earthquakes, and total brittle-ductile deformation measured from geodetic data have been compared to paleostrain from Quaternary geology for the intraplate Great Basin of the western United States. These data provide an assessment of the kinematics and mode of lithospheric extension that the western U.S. Cordillera has experienced in the last 5-10 million years. Strain and deformation rates were determined by the seismic moment tensor method using historic seismicity and fault plane solutions. By subdividing the Great Basin into areas of homogeneous strain it was possible to examine regional variations in the strain …

Contamination of groundwater with oil field brines was reported in the Walker Oil Field, Michigan. An electrical resistivity survey utilizing the Vertical Electrical Sounding method was conducted to test the method as an exploratory tool for delineating brine contamination in glacial deposits. The method was successful in defining the subsurface geology and delineating a shallow, confined aquifer, but the presence of extensive, conductive clays effectively masked the presence of brine contamination. The method was shown to be an effective exploratory tool for shallow investigations.

The reaction ²(γ,p)n has been studied using a monochromatic and polarized gamma ray beam at energies E(γ)=19.8, 29.0, 38.6, and 60.8 MeV. The beam of an intensity ∼4×10⁵ γ/sec was obtained by Compton back scattering of mode-locked laser light off electron bunches in the Adone storage ring. Photoneutron yields were measured at nine neutron angles thetan≃15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 135, 150, and 165 deg in the center of mass (c.m.) for E(γ)=19.8, 29.0, and 38.6 MeV, and at thetan≃30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 deg c.m. for E(γ)=60.8 MeV. The Kentucky River has responded to a lowering of base level control by: 1) deepening the course of its channel; 2) cutting off meanders as incision proceeded; 3) developing knickpoints on tributaries; 4) widening its valley; and 5) dissecting the upland surface.

Field work involved surveying streams to obtain profiles. Twenty streams covering 125 miles of river from Carrollton to Camp Nelson, Kentucky were surveyed. Knickpoints were defined from these profiles. Data from stream profiles showed knickpoint distances decreasing with increasing distance up river. Map work involved obtaining data for hypsometric curves. Hypsometric integrals were determined from these curves. Data …

Conventional spectrophometers require the transfer of a sample to a cuvette for obtaining spectra. The measurement of absorbance in situ can be accomplished using a fiber optic probe which can be placed directly in the sample. The fiber optic probe also minimizes environmental factors such as thermal or vibrational which may affect the absorbing species. A rapid scanning speed allows for essentially simultaneous wavelength monitoring.

The effect of coupling a rapid scanning spectrophotometer with a fiber optic probe provides for an extremely versatile system. When used in comjunction with a microprocessor or computer, this approach offers advantages such as data …

An (e,2e) electron scattering spectrometer has been constructed and used for the first time to investigate the spectral momentum density of the valence bands of a solid target. This technique provides fundamental information about the electronic structure of both crystalline and amorphous solids. The three fundamental quantities, the band structure, electron density of states, and electron momentum distribution can be simultaneously derived from the measured (e,2e) cross section.

A review of single electron and (e,2e) scattering theory is given with an emphasis on scattering from solids. The effects of multiple scattering are discussed and a method of deconvoluting those effects …
