A Study Of The Miscibility Of Various Liquids With Ethylene Glycol, Joseph J. Furlong Sep 1930

A Study Of The Miscibility Of Various Liquids With Ethylene Glycol, Joseph J. Furlong

Bachelors’ Theses

Ethylene glycol is a compound possessing great interest, both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint. In its properties it lies midway between ethyl alcohol, C2H50H, and glycerol, C3H5(0H)3, the three compounds together forming an homologous series of alcohols.

A few years ago this substance was a scientific curiosity, produced solely by laboratory methods, and without any commercial value, although it had been known for more than sixty years. Today the manufacturers cannot produce enough glycol to satisfy the growing demand. The DuPont organization wanted to use it in a …

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass Jun 1930

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass

Bachelors’ Theses

As an introduction to the phenomenon of magnetic rotation it is well to offer a brief explanation of the phenomenon of optical activity. According to the ’’wave theory” of light the rays from any ordinary light vibrate in every conceivable plane. If the light is reflected from a glass surface or passed through a Nicol prism it undergoes a change. If an attempt is made to pass the beam through a second Nicol prism is found that the optical axes of the two prisms must be parallel to one another or the beam will not penetrate the second one.

The Development Of Colloid Chemistry, Oscar A. Bouise Jun 1930

The Development Of Colloid Chemistry, Oscar A. Bouise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At first, it was a blur, that had shrouded a great mystery for ages and ages, until some seventy odd years ago. Then came Thomas Graham, who could not satisfy himself with merely viewing a blur as a blur. Being a scientist, he applied his mind experimentally, with the keen precision of any of the eminent astronomers using a telescope, and viewed more clearly this mist which hovered above the horizon . But maybe it was not due time fir the unfolding of the great secret, for Graham's focus only revealed a more complicated mist that had been seen before. …

A Study Of The Striated Spark By The Method Of Instantaneous Photography, Laurence L. Cruise May 1930

A Study Of The Striated Spark By The Method Of Instantaneous Photography, Laurence L. Cruise

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

In 1867 Toepler found the existence of a pulse spreading from the region around the spark immediately after it had passed. Since the density of the air in the pulse differs from that of the surrounding gas, the pulse is optically different from the rest of the field and so can be made visible by the “Shadowgraph Method.” Topeler’s work was the first of its kind where an instantaneous view, say of the order of several millionths of a second, of the electric spark was obtained. IN 1926 Dr. Zinszer, while studying the life history of the electric spark by …

The Corrosion Prevention Qualities Of The Aldehydes, Oliver R. Mackenzie May 1930

The Corrosion Prevention Qualities Of The Aldehydes, Oliver R. Mackenzie

Bachelors’ Theses

In preparing the natural ore of iron for commercial use, man has met with great success. At present, approximately 36,000,000 tons of steel are produced yearly in the United States alone. Man, however, has been confronted by an unceasing, tireless agent which tends to return the newly manufactured steel to the oxide of the iron, a condition similar to that of the natural ore. To prevent this action, man has put up a continual fight, using many preventitlves, but to date corrosion has overcome all of man’s contrivances and emerged the winner.

The Study Of The Effects Of Different Metallic Soaps On The Water Content Of Water-In-Gasoline Emulsions, Lynn D. Wilson May 1930

The Study Of The Effects Of Different Metallic Soaps On The Water Content Of Water-In-Gasoline Emulsions, Lynn D. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

The study of emulsions and emulsification is of very great theoretical and practical interest. From the standpoint of pure science it throws much light on the problems of surface tension, surface concentration, absorption, surface films, electrical double layers. Brownian movement, and the general theory of disperse systems and colloids. It is also of importance in biological science, e.g., the adsorption of fats and the permeability of membranes. When industrial and applied science are considered, it is remarkable how many subjects of interest and importance are dependent on a knowledge of the formation, behavior, and stability of emulsions. In this connection, …

The Influence Of Freezing On The Occurrence Of Reducing Sugar In The Potato, Leo B. Perssion May 1930

The Influence Of Freezing On The Occurrence Of Reducing Sugar In The Potato, Leo B. Perssion

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose or this thesis was to see if the change or potato starch to a reducing sugar in the potato on freezing was due to the freezing itself or to some enzymatic reaction. For we know that reducing sugars are formed in the potato by just freezing, therefore it should be possible to manufacture sugar by using pure potato starch as a base. Although this problem may seem to be an unimportant labor as the supply of sugar is large and the price of sugar cheap; this process of obtaining sugar would save thousands or bushels of potatoes every …

The Effect Of Current Density On The Efficiency Of A Brass Cathode In Chromium Plating, Anton E. Budner

Bachelors’ Theses

That chromium could be electrodeposited from chromic acid baths, has been an accomplished fact for over 70 years. However, only in the past few years, has the mechanism of the process been sufficiently understood to permit chromium plating on a commercial basis. Because of the properties and advantages of this particular deposit, tremendous interest and activity has developed in this practically new field. Numerous patents have been granted, but relatively little specific scientific information has been published. Much work can yet be done towards the development of this field. It is the problem of this thesis to study the effect …

An Analysis Of Pecan Nut Shells, Marie I. Bond May 1930

An Analysis Of Pecan Nut Shells, Marie I. Bond

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis deals with the methods or analysis or pecan nut shells and an attempt to identify the extracted pigment.

At present nut shells are waste products. This makes their study interesting from a commercial standpoint. In view of the fact that very little work of this kind has been done, nut shell analysis offers interesting research problems as well as excellent practice in the technique or organic analysis.

Such great interest is now being taken in plant pigments that, a thorough investigation of the red pigment yielded by pecan nut shell would be an appreciated contribution to science.

A Study Of Various Metallic Electrodes In Potentiometric Titrations, Louie Boncyk May 1930

A Study Of Various Metallic Electrodes In Potentiometric Titrations, Louie Boncyk

Bachelors’ Theses

The significance of ion concentrations has been the subject of many investigations during the last few years. The results obtained have demonstrated without question the unlimited possibilities existing for laboratory and industrial applications of ion concentration measurements. It has been shown in many instances biological activity, fermentation, and filtration are influenced to a large extent by variations in the H-ion concentration. In addition, the way is open for improved control and accuracy in the many neutralization problems encountered in the laboratory. The lack of suitable electrodes has greatly retarded the practical applications of H-ion measurements to plant industrial problems. The …

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.

History Of Applied Geometry, Evelyn Jackson Jan 1930

History Of Applied Geometry, Evelyn Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics: Just what does the word mean to us? After a moment of thought many different meanings may present themselves to our minds. At first we are inclined to say that the word mathematics covers a vast field. We are justified in so thinking because mathematics embraces a wide scope of study. Were we to say that it is a science we should place it in its proper genius, for it is truly a science of numbers and space. However, could not the science be the art of calculation or the art of computation?
