Snp Auto-Calling Using Artificial Neural Networks, Damien Spivak Aug 2005

Snp Auto-Calling Using Artificial Neural Networks, Damien Spivak

Theses

In recent years feedforward artificial neural networks (ANN) and their training algorithms have become an effective methodology for the construction of nonlinear systems that solve the statistical problem of classification. The ability of ANNs to solve this problem is highly germane to making progress in the refinement of DNA microarray analysis and techniques regarding this issue. This study attempts to deal with the classification of microarray data and the comparison and validation of simple feedforward ANNs in partitioning high dimensional data. In doing this the efficacy of using ANNs as a genotyping tool will be proven. Furthermore, it has been …

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz Aug 2005

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz

Theses

The objective of this study was to further the current understanding of the correlation between solar flares and magnetic flux change. The average gradient of the magnetic flux around the neutral line of Active Region 9415 and the locations of the magnetic flux centers-of-mass in both polarities in AR 9415 were determined. Subsequent to the 2001 April 6 flare, there was a statistically significant mean increase of 0.00208 G/km in the average gradient. Prior to the flare, the magnetic flux centers-of-mass became increasingly sheared along the neutral line. After the flare, this shear suddenly decreased and the magnetic flux centers-of-mass …

Effect Of Melatonin And Dopamine In Site Specific Phosphorylation Of Phosducin In Intact Retina, Arinzechukwu Okere Nkemdirim Aug 2005

Effect Of Melatonin And Dopamine In Site Specific Phosphorylation Of Phosducin In Intact Retina, Arinzechukwu Okere Nkemdirim

Theses and Dissertations

Phosducin (Pdc) is a 28 kDa binding partner for the G protein beta gamma subunit dimer (G-beta-gamma) found abundantly in the photoreceptor cells of the retina and pineal gland. In the retina, light-dependent changes in cAMP and Ca2+ control the phosphorylation of Pdc at serine 73 and 54, respectively, which in turn controls the binding of Pdc to G protein beta gamma subunit dimer . G protein beta gamma subunit dimer binding has been proposed to facilitate light-driven transport of G protein beta gamma subunit dimer from the site of phototransduction in the outer segment of the photoreceptor cell to …

Challenging Policies That Do Not Play Fair: A Credential Relevancy Framework Using Trust Negotiation Ontologies, Travis S. Leithead Aug 2005

Challenging Policies That Do Not Play Fair: A Credential Relevancy Framework Using Trust Negotiation Ontologies, Travis S. Leithead

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis challenges the assumption that policies will "play fair" within trust negotiation. Policies that do not "play fair" contain requirements for authentication that are misleading, irrelevant, and/or incorrect, based on the current transaction context. To detect these unfair policies, trust negotiation ontologies provide the context to determine the relevancy of a given credential set for a particular negotiation. We propose a credential relevancy framework for use in trust negotiation that utilizes ontologies to process the set of all available credentials C and produce a subset of credentials C' relevant to the context of a given negotiation. This credential relevancy …

Building Efficient Systems From Data In A Computational Intelligence Framework, Debrup Chakraborty Dr. Aug 2005

Building Efficient Systems From Data In A Computational Intelligence Framework, Debrup Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

There are problems of interest for which precise mathematical or physical understanding is yet to come. Let us illustrate this with an example. Suppose, for a mining operation one needs to blast a certain portion of the soil/rock using some specific ex- plosives. Before the blast is made, the miners want to know the intensity of vibration that would be produced at a certain distance from the site of blasting. The intensity of vibration may de pend on several factors. For example, it will depend on the characteristics and quantity of the explosive used, the rock characteristics of the region, …

Efficient Wait-Free Algorithms For Implementing Ll/Sc Objects, Srdjan Petrovic Aug 2005

Efficient Wait-Free Algorithms For Implementing Ll/Sc Objects, Srdjan Petrovic

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Over the past decade, a pair of instructions called load-linked (LL) and store-conditional (SC) have emerged as the most suitable synchronization instructions for the design of lock-free algorithms. However, current architectures do not support these instructions; instead, they support either CAS (e.g., UltraSPARC, Itanium, Pentium) or restricted versions of LL/SC (e.g., POWER4, MIPS, Alpha). Thus, there is a gap between what algorithm designers want (namely, LL/SC) and what multiprocessors actually support (namely, CAS or restricted LL/SC). To bridge this gap, this thesis presents a series of efficient, wait-free algorithms that implement LL/SC from CAS or restricted LL/SC.

Dynamic Dead Variable Analysis, Micah S. Lewis Aug 2005

Dynamic Dead Variable Analysis, Micah S. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic dead variable analysis (DDVA) extends traditional static dead variable analysis (SDVA) in the context of model checking through the use of run-time information. The analysis is run multiple times during the course of model checking to create a more precise set of dead variables. The DDVA is evaluated based on the amount of memory used to complete model checking relative to SDVA while considering the extra overhead required to implement DDVA. On several models with a complex control flow graph, DDVA reduces the amount of memory needed by 38-88MB compared to SDVA with a cost of 36 bytes of …

Self-Adjusting Finite State Machines: An Approach To Real-Time Autonomous Behavior In Robots, Scott Schwartz Aug 2005

Self-Adjusting Finite State Machines: An Approach To Real-Time Autonomous Behavior In Robots, Scott Schwartz

Computer Science Honors Theses

In the Robotics industry, it is a frequent requirement that robots operate in real-time. The usual approach to this issue involves creating robots driven entirely by direct environmental input rather than complicated planning and decision-making AI. This approach means that the current state of the robot in relation to its environment exclusively determines the actions of the robot. In the simplest terms, this approach creates a Finite State Machine (FSM). Clearly, a standard FSM is completely pre-deterministic upon its creation. This is a drawback which immediately disallows the robot to cope with dynamic environments in an autonomous manner. This research …

A Limit Theorem In Cryptography., Kevin Lynch Aug 2005

A Limit Theorem In Cryptography., Kevin Lynch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cryptography is the study of encryptying and decrypting messages and deciphering encrypted messages when the code is unknown. We consider Λπx, Δy) which is a count of how many ways a permutation satisfies a certain property. According to Hawkes and O'Connor, the distribution of Λπx, Δy) tends to a Poisson distribution with parameter ½ as m → ∞ for all Δxy ∈ (Z/qZ)m - 0. We give a proof of this theorem using the Stein-Chen method: As qm …

Cell Toxicity And Uptake Of Rrr-Alpha-Tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate (Tpgs) By Various Cell Ines In Vitro., Christelle Komguem Kamga Aug 2005

Cell Toxicity And Uptake Of Rrr-Alpha-Tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate (Tpgs) By Various Cell Ines In Vitro., Christelle Komguem Kamga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on investigating and comparing the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of RRR-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS, with that of alpha-tocopheryl succinate (α-TS). Both TPGS and α-TS are water-soluble forms of vitamin E with important clinical applications. Cytotoxicity assays with RAW 264.7 and LNCaP cells incubated overnight with TPGS or α-TS at concentrations ≥ 12.4 μM suggest that α-TS is more cytotoxic than TPGS. Macrophages were found to be more sensitive than LNCaP cells when treated with similar concentrations of α-TS. For both cell lines, most of the TPGS or α-TS taken up remained esterified after 24 hours. Our …

Rocket Powered Flight As A Perturbation To The Two-Body Problem., Clayton Jeremiah Clark Aug 2005

Rocket Powered Flight As A Perturbation To The Two-Body Problem., Clayton Jeremiah Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The two body problem and the rocket equation + ∊ α + k/r3r = 0 have been expressed in numerous ways. However, the combination of the rocket equation with the two-body problem has not been studied to any degree of depth due to the intractability of the resulting non-linear, non-homogeneous equations. The goal is to use perturbation techniques to approximate solutions to the combined two-body and rocket equations.

Electrochemical Remedy And Analysis For The Environment Based On The New Polymer-Dna Composite Material., Noor Feuza Hussain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work a new material, the conducting polymer-DNA composite, has been reported for the first time due to its promise in micro extraction, transfer, and release of cations under controlled potential conditions by using electrochemically assisted solid phase micro extraction (SPME). The Polypyrrole/DNA composite can be formed easily by oxidation of pyrrole monomers in the presence of chromosomal DNA by electropolymerization. Environmental significant pollutants such as Cd, Pb, Hg, Co, Zn, Cu, and Bi metal ions can be extracted from the aqueous solution and are able to be transferred to another medium defined as the release solution where the …

Paired And Total Domination On The Queen's Graph., Paul Asa Burchett Aug 2005

Paired And Total Domination On The Queen's Graph., Paul Asa Burchett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Queen’s domination problem has a long and rich history. The problem can be simply stated as: What is the minimum number of queens that can be placed on a chessboard so that all squares are attacked or occupied by a queen? The problem has been expanded to include not only the standard 8x8 board, but any rectangular m×n sized board. In this thesis, we consider both paired and total domination versions of this renowned problem.

Extensions Of The Cayley-Hamilton Theorem With Applications To Elliptic Operators And Frames., Alberto Mokak Teguia Aug 2005

Extensions Of The Cayley-Hamilton Theorem With Applications To Elliptic Operators And Frames., Alberto Mokak Teguia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Cayley-Hamilton Theorem is an important result in the study of linear transformations over finite dimensional vector spaces. In this thesis, we show that the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem can be extended to self-adjoint trace-class operators and to closed self-adjoint operators with trace-class resolvent over a separable Hilbert space. Applications of these results include calculating operators resolvents and finding the inverse of a frame operator.

Cell Toxicology Study Of Rrr-Alpha-Tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate (Tpgs)., Clarisse Sornsay Muenyi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on the cytotoxic properties of RRR-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) in transformed and cancerous cell lines. We used RAW264.7 macrophage and prostate cancer (LNCaP) cell lines in this study. TPGS caused cell death and decreased cell viability in a dose and time dependent manner. Cell death was evaluated fluorimetrically by employing the nucleic acid-binding fluorophore; propidium iodide. A colorimetric 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to evaluate cell viability. Cell death can occur through necrosis or apoptosis. Our results suggested that TPGS triggered apoptotic cell death. Induction of apoptosis, as measured by caspase …

The Interquartile Range: Theory And Estimation., Dewey Lonzo Whaley Aug 2005

The Interquartile Range: Theory And Estimation., Dewey Lonzo Whaley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interquartile range (IQR) is used to describe the spread of a distribution. In an introductory statistics course, the IQR might be introduced as simply the “range within which the middle half of the data points lie.” In other words, it is the distance between the two quartiles, IQR = Q3 - Q1. We will compute the population IQR, the expected value, and the variance of the sample IQR for various continuous distributions. In addition, a bootstrap confidence interval for the population IQR will be evaluated.

Potential Energy Surface Around The Tropylium Ion., Kenneth Wayne Bullins Aug 2005

Potential Energy Surface Around The Tropylium Ion., Kenneth Wayne Bullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The formation of the tropylium ion, C7H7+, in the mass spectrum of toluene is a chemical process that has been studied extensively in the past. The advances in computational power of personal computers have made the investigation of the pathway to form this ion and its subsequent decomposition feasible at a fairly high level of theory. The calculations that we performed were at the HF/6-31G (d, p) and the B3LYP/6-311++G (2d) levels. This work will show areas of the potential energy surface around the highly symmetric tropylium ion to give a glance of possible mechanisms …

Bicyclic Mixed Triple Systems., Benkam Benedict Bobga Aug 2005

Bicyclic Mixed Triple Systems., Benkam Benedict Bobga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the study of triple systems, one question faced is that of finding for what order a decomposition exists. We state and prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a bicyclic mixed triple system based on the three possible partial orientations of the 3-cycle with twice as many arcs as edges. We also explore the existence of rotational and reverse mixed triple systems. Our principal proof technique applied is the difference method. Finally, this work contains a result on packing of complete mixed graphs on v vertices, Mv, with isomorphic copies of two …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Company's Online Health And Safety Training Program By Assessing Its Employees Perceptions And Knowledge., Jo Nell Maynard Mullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate a company’s online H & S training program. The ABC Company’s online 8-hr HAZWOPER refresher course is based on current OSHA standard topics required for certification and principles flexible to fit site- or task-specific situations and conditions.

An 18-question survey was used to evaluate employee perceptions of online training compared to traditional classroom training. Perceptions were compared by demographic variables (e.g. gender, position, race, age and longevity with the ABC Company), which suggested that only age had an influence on employee response. Fifty-five percent of the employees surveyed preferred online training as compared …

Using Box-Scores To Determine A Position's Contribution To Winning Basketball Games, Garritt L. Page Aug 2005

Using Box-Scores To Determine A Position's Contribution To Winning Basketball Games, Garritt L. Page

Theses and Dissertations

Basketball is a sport that has become increasingly popular world-wide. At the professional level it is a game in which each of the five positions has a specific responsibility that requires unique skills. It seems likely that it would be valuable for coaches to know which skills for each position are most conducive to winning. Knowing which skills to develop for each position could help coaches optimize each player's ability by customizing practice to contain drills that develop the most important skills for each position that would in turn improve the team's overall ability. Through the use of Bayesian hierarchical …

An Acoustical Analysis Of Domes Coupled To Rooms, With Special Application To The Darussholah Mosque, In East Java, Indonesia, Sentagi Sesotya Utami Aug 2005

An Acoustical Analysis Of Domes Coupled To Rooms, With Special Application To The Darussholah Mosque, In East Java, Indonesia, Sentagi Sesotya Utami

Theses and Dissertations

Concave surfaces are often considered to be detrimental or precarious in room acoustics, especially because of the impact they have on the distribution of sound energy. However, it is often difficult to avoid such surfaces in buildings with specific architectural functions. A primary example of this involves mosques, which are sacred places of worship for Muslims. In keeping with the Islamic architectural style, most mosques incorporate a symbolic centralized domed ceiling as part of their room structures. These domes are open on the bottom and coupled to the acoustic spaces below. In many cases, the lower spaces may be idealized …

Exploring Discrete Cosine Transform For Multi-Resolution Analysis, Safdar Ali Syed Abedi Aug 2005

Exploring Discrete Cosine Transform For Multi-Resolution Analysis, Safdar Ali Syed Abedi

Computer Science Theses

Multi-resolution analysis has been a very popular technique in the recent years. Wavelets have been used extensively to perform multi resolution image expansion and analysis. DCT, however, has been used to compress image but not for multi resolution image analysis. This thesis is an attempt to explore the possibilities of using DCT for multi-resolution image analysis. Naive implementation of block DCT for multi-resolution expansion has many difficulties that lead to signal distortion. One of the main causes of distortion is the blocking artifacts that appear when reconstructing images transformed by DCT. The new algorithm is based on line DCT which …

Global Semantic Integrity Constraint Checking For A System Of Databases, Praveen Madiraju Aug 2005

Global Semantic Integrity Constraint Checking For A System Of Databases, Praveen Madiraju

Computer Science Dissertations

In today’s emerging information systems, it is natural to have data distributed across multiple sites. We define a System of Databases (SyDb) as a collection of autonomous and heterogeneous databases. R-SyDb (System of Relational Databases) is a restricted form of SyDb, referring to a collection of relational databases, which are independent. Similarly, X-SyDb (System of XML Databases) refers to a collection of XML databases. Global integrity constraints ensure integrity and consistency of data spanning multiple databases. In this dissertation, we present (i) Constraint Checker, a general framework of a mobile agent based approach for checking global constraints on R-SyDb, and …

New Correlation Effects In Nonrelativistic Atomic Photoionization In The High Energy Limit, Chieh Jen Yang

Physics and Astronomy Theses

The effect of initial state correlation on high-energy dipole photoionization is considered and it is shown that for almost all atomic electron the asymptotic high-energy dependence is E-7/2, and the dominant transition is an ionization plus excitation satellite transition. This is demonstrated in numerical calculations of the photoionization of Ge4p2 1S and Sn 5p2 1S.

Developing A Modular Hydrogeology Ontology Extending The Sweet Ontologies, Ajay Tripathi

Geosciences Theses

Application of ontologies in the environmental science will allow experts in this field to model their domain knowledge for more efficient exchange and reuse. This thesis presents a modular approach in reengineering existing upper-level ontologies to conceptualize specific domain knowledge. The aim of extending these upper-level ontologies is to tailor and transform the existing conceptual models into new ones designed for the use in a specific domain in the earth sciences. This thesis extends the upper-level Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET)ontologies to develop ontologies for part of the hydrogeology domain. The existing SWEET ontologies are developed by …

Analyzing The Combination Of Polymorphisms Associating With Antidepressant Response By Exact Conditional Test, Baofu Ma Aug 2005

Analyzing The Combination Of Polymorphisms Associating With Antidepressant Response By Exact Conditional Test, Baofu Ma

Mathematics Theses

Genetic factors have been shown to be involved in etiology of a poor response to the antidepressant treatment with sufficient dosage and duration. Our goal was to identify the role of polymorphisms in the poor response to the treatment. To this end, 5 functional polymorphisms in 109 patients diagnosed with unipolar, major depressive disorder are analyzed. Due to the small sample size, exact conditional tests are utilized to analyze the contingency table. The data analysis involves: (1) Exact test for conditional independence in a high dimensional contingency table; (2) Marginal independence test; (3) Exact test for three-way interactions. The efficiency …

Rest Frame Variability Characteristics Of Blazars, John Patrick Mcfarland Aug 2005

Rest Frame Variability Characteristics Of Blazars, John Patrick Mcfarland

Physics and Astronomy Dissertations

Blazars exhibit the most extreme variability of the class of objects known asactive galactic nuclei (AGN). They are characterized by a featureless continuum, high polarization, and variability at all wavelengths and timescales. The amplitude of optical variations can range from less than 0.1 magnitude on the timescale of minutes to hours, to greater than 5.0 magnitudes on timescales of months to years, and gamma-ray variability amplitudes can span a range of as much as three orders of magnitude in a time-scale as short as a few days. These characteristics are consistent with a supermassive black hole accreting matter at the …

Spectral Line Synthesis For Hot Stars, Wenjin Huang Aug 2005

Spectral Line Synthesis For Hot Stars, Wenjin Huang

Physics and Astronomy Dissertations

I developed a spectrum synthesis method to investigate the physical properties of hot OB main sequence (MS) stars, which are often rapid rotators. The code realistically simulates the surface conditions of rapidly rotating stars, considering the rotationally-deformed stellar shape and gravity darkening effect. Comparing the synthesized absorption line profiles with the observed spectra of the member stars of 19 young Galactic clusters, I determined the projected rotational velocities of 496 stars. The average surface temperature and gravity for most of these objects were then derived from H$\gamma$ line fits. The polar gravity of each star was estimated as a good …

Scoresvg: A New Software Framework For Capturing The Semantic Meaning And Graphical Representation Of Musical Scores Using Java2d, Xml, And Svg, Geoffrey Alan Bays Aug 2005

Scoresvg: A New Software Framework For Capturing The Semantic Meaning And Graphical Representation Of Musical Scores Using Java2d, Xml, And Svg, Geoffrey Alan Bays

Computer Science Theses

ScoreSVG implements a three-tiered software architecture that generates musical scores in scalable vector graphics (SVG), something no other known music editor has done. SVG is non-proprietary XML-based format that renders graphical content into a web browser equipped with a SVG plugin. Scores in SVG can be scripted to produce interactive music theory examples, or make other graphical score changes impossible in any other format. Large music score editors such as Finale and Sibelius output to proprietary file formats, or Postscript (.ps) files that are not interchangeable or modifiable once created. Open source efforts such as LilyPond or Guido require the …
