Turkish Journal of Chemistry

By using 1-benzylpiperazinedithiocarbamate (1-BPzDC) as a new reagent, a method of solid-phase extraction is described for the pre-concentration of cadmium in water samples prior to its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). This method is based on the fact that cadmium forming in aqueous phase cadmium 1-benzylpiperazinedithiocarbamate complex (Cd(1-BPzDC)_{2}) can be extracted with microcrystalline naphthalene on solid phase, then back-extracted with potassium cyanide solution into aqueous phase and measured by FAAS. The optimum experimental parameters for the extraction and back-extraction of cadmium were investigated. The obtained recovery was nearly 97% when the enrichment factor was 500 for spiked cadmium …

Glycine Transport Through A Charged Polysulfone Cation Exchange Membrane, Nuri̇ Ünlü, Hüseyi̇n Kara, Mustafa Ersöz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The transport of glycine through a charged polysulfone cation exchange membrane was studied as a function of pH at different initial conditions of less than pH 5.9 and the glycine permeability was explained under the experimental conditions as pH dependent interfacial transport. The glycine permeability increases with a decreasing pH in the receiver phase. The largest permeability was obtained if the initial pH on the source side was pH 5.9 and that on the opposite side was pH 2.0. The transport phenomena can be explained by the interfacial transport based on the interfacial chemical reaction (protonation, deprotonation or ion-exchange) between …

Application Of Proton Conducting Polymer Electrolytes To Electrochromic Devices, Ayhan Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Electrochromic display devices have been fabricated using Polydiallyldimethylammonium dihydrogenphosphate (PAMA^+ H_2PO_4^-) blended with H_3PO_4 as the electrolyte and WO_3 as the electrochromic film. The WO_3 deposited glass electrodes were doped with protons to form H_xWO_3 in which color depends on the charge density (CD) ranging from 0.01 to 0.04 C/cm^2. Proton conducting films of PAMA^+ H_2PO_4^- 2 H_3PO_4 (2 moles of acid per polymer repeat unit) were sandwiched between two electrodes to obtain the following symmetric configuration: Glass/ITO/WO_3/H^+ -electrolyte film/H_xWO_3 /ITO/Glass. Prior to construction of the electrochromic windows, the electrochemical stability of polymer/acid blends was determined via cyclic voltammetry (CV).

The Selective Protection And Deprotection Of Ambident Nucleophiles With Parent And Substituted Triarylmethyls, İbrahi̇m Demi̇rtaş, Bülent Büyükkidan, Mahfuz Elmastaş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

N-triphenylmethyl and N-4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylmethyl of o-aminophenol, m-aminophenol, and p-aminophenol compounds were easily prepared from triphenylmethyl chloride and 4,4'-dimethoxytriphenyl- methyl chloride. S-triphenylmethyl-2-mercapto ethanol was also selectively synthesized using the triphenylmethyl chloride and 2-mercapto ethanol. The reactivity of nitrogen and sulfur versus oxygen in the protection reactions was compared. In principle, the protection of aminophenols and 2-mercapto ethanol with triarylmethyls (trityls) may take place on the oxygen. However, in this framework, we discuss the different reactivities of oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur towards triphenylmethyl chloride (TrCl) and 4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylmethyl chloride (DMTrCl) and find that nitrogen and sulfur are more reactive than oxygen.
