Brane Brick Models, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds And 2d (0,2) Quivers, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong Feb 2016

Brane Brick Models, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds And 2d (0,2) Quivers, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong

Publications and Research

We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane congurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the innite class of 2d (generically) N = (0; 2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.

Design And Analysis Of A Single-Camera Omnistereo Sensor For Quadrotor Micro Aerial Vehicles (Mavs), Carlos Jaramillo, Roberto G. Valenti, Ling Guo, Jizhong Xiao Feb 2016

Design And Analysis Of A Single-Camera Omnistereo Sensor For Quadrotor Micro Aerial Vehicles (Mavs), Carlos Jaramillo, Roberto G. Valenti, Ling Guo, Jizhong Xiao

Publications and Research

We describe the design and 3D sensing performance of an omnidirectional stereo (omnistereo) vision system applied to Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). The proposed omnistereo sensor employs a monocular camera that is co-axially aligned with a pair of hyperboloidal mirrors (a vertically-folded catadioptric configuration). We show that this arrangement provides a compact solution for omnidirectional 3D perception while mounted on top of propeller-based MAVs (not capable of large payloads). The theoretical single viewpoint (SVP) constraint helps us derive analytical solutions for the sensor’s projective geometry and generate SVP-compliant panoramic images to compute 3D information from stereo correspondences (in a truly synchronous …

Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics: Two-Year Summary, Olen Dias, Alice W. Cunningham, Loreto Porte Feb 2016

Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics: Two-Year Summary, Olen Dias, Alice W. Cunningham, Loreto Porte

Publications and Research

Supplemental instruction—using trained peer tutors to conduct additional class sessions in a group-work format—has been in use for over forty years. However, its success in developmental mathematics has been inconclusive. In the two years since institution of the strategy for developmental mathematics students at Hostos Community College, overall results (n = 5403 students) show significantly improved course pass rates to at least a 99% confidence level. Although no significant course retention differences have yet appeared, academic success itself promotes future retention. The program has proved beneficial for the College’s developmental mathematics students and is being expanded. Future research including …

How To Measure Metallicity From Five-Band Photometry With Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms, Viviana Acquaviva Feb 2016

How To Measure Metallicity From Five-Band Photometry With Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms, Viviana Acquaviva

Publications and Research

We demonstrate that it is possible to measure metallicity from the SDSS five-band photometry to better than 0.1 dex using supervised machine learning algorithms. Using spectroscopic estimates of metallicity as ground truth, we build, optimize and train several estimators to predict metallicity. We use the observed photometry, as well as derived quantities such as stellar mass and photometric redshift, as features, and we build two sample data sets at median redshifts of 0.103 and 0.218 and median r-band magnitude of 17.5 and 18.3, respectively. We find that ensemble methods, such as random forests of trees and extremely randomized trees and …

A Preliminary Assessment Of Gpm-Based Multi-Satellite Precipitation Estimates Over A Monsoon Dominated Region, Satya Prakash, Ashis K. Mitra, Amir Aghakouchak, Zhong Liu, Hamidreza Norouzi, D. S. Pai

Publications and Research

Following the launch of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, two advanced high resolution multi-satellite precipitation products namely, Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) version 6 are released. A critical evaluation of these newly released precipitation data sets is very important for both the end users and data developers. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of IMERG research product and GSMaP estimates over India at a daily scale for the southwest monsoon season (June to September 2014). The GPM-based precipitation products are inter-compared with widely used TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), and …

Improved Viirs And Modis Sst Imagery, Irina Gladkova, Alexander Ignatov, Fazlul Shahriar, Yury Kihai, Don Hillger, Boris Petrenko Jan 2016

Improved Viirs And Modis Sst Imagery, Irina Gladkova, Alexander Ignatov, Fazlul Shahriar, Yury Kihai, Don Hillger, Boris Petrenko

Publications and Research

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) radiometers, flown onboard Terra/Aqua and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP)/Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) satellites, are capable of providing superior sea surface temperature (SST) imagery. However, the swath data of these multi-detector sensors are subject to several artifacts including bow-tie distortions and striping, and require special pre-processing steps. VIIRS additionally does two irreversible data reduction steps onboard: pixel aggregation (to reduce resolution changes across the swath) and pixel deletion, which complicate both bow-tie correction and destriping. While destriping was addressed elsewhere, this paper describes an algorithm, adopted in …

Impact Of Particle Shape On Electron Transport And Lifetime In Zinc Oxide Nanorod-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Roger Chang, Kemakorn Ithisuphalap, Ilona Kretzschmar Jan 2016

Impact Of Particle Shape On Electron Transport And Lifetime In Zinc Oxide Nanorod-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Roger Chang, Kemakorn Ithisuphalap, Ilona Kretzschmar

Publications and Research

Owing to its high electron mobility, zinc oxide represents a promising alternative to titanium dioxide as the working electrode material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). When zinc oxide is grown into 1-D nanowire arrays and incorporated into the working electrode of DSCs, enhanced electron dynamics and even a decoupling of electron transport (τd) and electron lifetime (τn) have been observed. In this work, DSCs with working electrodes composed of solution-grown, unarrayed ZnO nanorods are investigated. In order to determine whether such devices give rise to similar decoupling, intensity modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopies are used to measure τd and τn, …

Pore Structure And Synergy In Antimicrobial Peptides Of The Magainin Family, Almudena Pino-Angeles, John M. Leveritt Iii, Themis Lazaridis Jan 2016

Pore Structure And Synergy In Antimicrobial Peptides Of The Magainin Family, Almudena Pino-Angeles, John M. Leveritt Iii, Themis Lazaridis

Publications and Research

Magainin 2 and PGLa are among the best-studied cationic antimicrobial peptides. They bind preferentially to negatively charged membranes and apparently cause their disruption by the formation of transmembrane pores, whose detailed structure is still unclear. Here we report the results of 5–9 μs all-atom molecular dynamics simulations starting from tetrameric transmembrane helical bundles of these two peptides, as well as their stoichiometric mixture, and the analog MG-H2 in DMPC or 3:1 DMPC/DMPG membranes. The simulations produce pore structures that appear converged, although some effect of the starting peptide arrangement (parallel vs. antiparallel) is still observed on this timescale. The peptides …

Density Functional Investigation Of The Inclusion Of Gold Clusters On A Ch3s Self-Assembled Lattice On Au(111), Darnel J. Allen, Wayne E. Archibald, John A. Harper, John C. Saputo, Daniel Torres Jan 2016

Density Functional Investigation Of The Inclusion Of Gold Clusters On A Ch3s Self-Assembled Lattice On Au(111), Darnel J. Allen, Wayne E. Archibald, John A. Harper, John C. Saputo, Daniel Torres

Publications and Research

We employ first-principles density functional theoretical calculations to address the inclusion of gold (Au) clusters in a well-packed CH3S self-assembled lattice. We compute CH3S adsorption energies to quantify the energetic stability of the self-assembly and gold adsorption and dissolution energies to characterize the structural stability of a series of Au clusters adsorbed at the SAM-Au interface. Our results indicate that the inclusion of Au clusters with less than four Au atoms in the SAM-Au interface enhances the binding of CH3S species. In contrast, larger Au clusters destabilize the self-assembly.We attribute this effect to the low-coordinated gold atoms in the cluster. …

Study Of The Kkk System In Hyperspherical Formalism, Roman Ya. Kezerashvili, Shalva M. Tsiklauri

Publications and Research

The three-body kaonic system KKK is studied in the framework of a singlechannel potential nonrelativistic model using the method of hyperspherical harmonics in momentum representation. Calculations are performed with two sets of KK and KK potentials. A quasibound state for the KK _K system with spin-parity 0− and isospin 1/2 is found below the three-kaon threshold.

Self-Assembly Of Gold Supraparticles With Crystallographically Aligned And Strongly Coupled Nanoparticle Building Blocks For Sers And Photothermal Therapy, S. Paterson, S. A. Thompson, J. Gracie, A. W. Wark, R. De La Rica Jan 2016

Self-Assembly Of Gold Supraparticles With Crystallographically Aligned And Strongly Coupled Nanoparticle Building Blocks For Sers And Photothermal Therapy, S. Paterson, S. A. Thompson, J. Gracie, A. W. Wark, R. De La Rica

Publications and Research

A new method is introduced for self-assembling citrate-capped gold nanoparticles into supraparticles with crystallographically aligned building blocks. It consists in confining gld nanoparticles inside a cellulose acetate membrane. The constituent nanoparticles are in close contact in the superstructure, and therefore generate hot spots leading to intense Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) signals. They also generate more plasmonic heat than the nanoparticle building blocks. The supraparticles are internalized by cells and show low cytotoxicity, but can kill cancer cells when irradiated with a laser. This, along with the improved plasmonic properties arising from their assembly, makes the gold supraparticles promising materials for …

Multiple Problem-Solving Strategies Provide Insight Into Students’ Understanding Of Open-Ended Linear Programming Problems, Marla A. Sole Jan 2016

Multiple Problem-Solving Strategies Provide Insight Into Students’ Understanding Of Open-Ended Linear Programming Problems, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

Open-ended questions that can be solved using different strategies help students learn and integrate content, and provide teachers with greater insights into students’ unique capabilities and levels of understanding. This article provides a problem that was modified to allow for multiple approaches. Students tended to employ high-powered, complex, familiar solution strategies rather than simpler, more intuitive strategies, which suggests that students might need more experience working with informal solution methods. During the semester, by incorporating open-ended questions, I gained valuable feedback, was able to better model real-world problems, challenge students with different abilities, and strengthen students’ problem solving skills.

Unifying Ancient And Modern Geometries Through Octonions, Sultan Catto, Yasemin Gürcan, Amish Khalfan, Levent Kurt Jan 2016

Unifying Ancient And Modern Geometries Through Octonions, Sultan Catto, Yasemin Gürcan, Amish Khalfan, Levent Kurt

Publications and Research

We show the first unified description of some of the oldest known geometries such as the Pappus’ theorem with more modern ones like Desargues’ theorem, Monge’s theorem and Ceva’s theorem, through octonions, the highest normed division algebra in eight dimensions. We also show important applications in hadronic physics, giving a full description of the algebra of color applicable to quark physics, and comment on further applications.

Clifford Algebras And Their Decomposition Into Conjugate Fermionic Heisenberg Algebras, Sultan Catto, Yasemin Gürcan, Amish Khalfan, Levent Kurt, V. Kato La Jan 2016

Clifford Algebras And Their Decomposition Into Conjugate Fermionic Heisenberg Algebras, Sultan Catto, Yasemin Gürcan, Amish Khalfan, Levent Kurt, V. Kato La

Publications and Research

We discuss a construction scheme for Clifford numbers of arbitrary dimension. The scheme is based upon performing direct products of the Pauli spin and identity matrices. Conjugate fermionic algebras can then be formed by considering linear combinations of the Clifford numbers and the Hermitian conjugates of such combinations. Fermionic algebras are important in investigating systems that follow Fermi-Dirac statistics. We will further comment on the applications of Clifford algebras to Fueter analyticity, twistors, color algebras, M-theory and Leech lattice as well as unification of ancient and modern geometries through them.

The Technological Enhancement Of Normally Occurring Radioactive Materials In Red Mud Due To The Production Of Alumina, Maurice O. Miller, Dionne A. Miller Jan 2016

The Technological Enhancement Of Normally Occurring Radioactive Materials In Red Mud Due To The Production Of Alumina, Maurice O. Miller, Dionne A. Miller

Publications and Research

This study investigates the level of technological enhancement of normally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) in the red mud waste due to the production of alumina in Jamaica. Technological enhancements factors (TEF) were determined for the uranium, thorium, actinium series, their progenies, and the nonseries potassium-40 using gamma spectrometry. The study concluded that bauxite production technologically enhances the uranium progenies Th-234, Pb-214, Bi-214, and Pa-234 and the thorium-232 progenies Ac-228, Pb-212, and Bi-212 in red mud. The actinium series was technologically enhanced, but K-40 and the thorium daughter, Tl-208, were reduced. The spectrometric comparison of Tl-208 (at 510 keV) was unexpected …

Moments Method For Shell-Model Level Density, V. Zelevinsky, M. Horoi, Roman A. Sen′Kov Jan 2016

Moments Method For Shell-Model Level Density, V. Zelevinsky, M. Horoi, Roman A. Sen′Kov

Publications and Research

The modern form of the Moments Method applied to the calculation of the nuclear shell-model level density is explained and examples of the method at work are given. The calculated level density practically exactly coincides with the result of full diagonalization when the latter is feasible. The method provides the pure level density for given spin and parity with spurious center-of-mass excitations subtracted. The presence and interplay of all correlations leads to the results different from those obtained by the mean-field combinatorics.

Locally Anisotropic Toposes, Jonathon Funk, Pieter Hofstra Jan 2016

Locally Anisotropic Toposes, Jonathon Funk, Pieter Hofstra

Publications and Research

This paper continues the investigation of isotropy theory for toposes. We develop the theory of isotropy quotients of toposes, culminating in a structure theorem for a class of toposes we call locally anisotropic. The theory has a natural interpretation for inverse semigroups, which clarifies some aspects of how inverse semigroups and toposes are related.

Development And Separation Of Forced Convective Flow, Adefemi Sunmonu Jan 2016

Development And Separation Of Forced Convective Flow, Adefemi Sunmonu

Publications and Research

Singularities are considered in the solution of the laminar bound- ary - layer equation at a position of separation. The works of Howarth (1938). Goldstein (1948), Stewartson (1958), Terrill (1960) and Akin- relere [(1981), (1982)] are reviewed to fully establish the existence of singularity in the incompressible boundary layer at separation for both the velocity and thermal fields. A ow at a large Reynold's number along an immersed solid surface around which bounda y layer is formed through which the velocity rises rapidly from zero at the surface to its value in the main stream is considered. It is found …

Signature Of Structural Distortion In Optical Spectra Of Yfe2o4 Thin Film, R. C. Rai, J. Hinz, G. X. A. Petronilo, F. Sun, H. Zeng, Mim Lal Nakarmi, P. R. Niraula Jan 2016

Signature Of Structural Distortion In Optical Spectra Of Yfe2o4 Thin Film, R. C. Rai, J. Hinz, G. X. A. Petronilo, F. Sun, H. Zeng, Mim Lal Nakarmi, P. R. Niraula

Publications and Research

We report structural, optical, and electro-optical properties of polycrystalline YFe2O4 thin films, deposited on (0001) sapphire substrates using the electron-beam deposition technique. The optical spectra of a 120 nm YFe2O4 show Fe d to d on-site and O 2p to Fe 3d, Y 4d, and Y 5s charge-transfer electronic excitations. Anomalies in the temperature dependence data of the charge-transfer excitations and the splitting of the 4.46 eV charge-transfer peak strongly suggest a structural distortion at 180 ± 10 K. Evidence of such a structural distortion is also manifested in the surface resistance versus temperature data. In addition, the YFe2O4 thin …

Quantitative Model For Rationalizing Solvent Effect In Noncovalent Ch-Aryl Interactions, Bright C. Emenike, Sara N. Bey, Brianna C. Bigelow, Srinivas V.S. Chakravartula Jan 2016

Quantitative Model For Rationalizing Solvent Effect In Noncovalent Ch-Aryl Interactions, Bright C. Emenike, Sara N. Bey, Brianna C. Bigelow, Srinivas V.S. Chakravartula

Publications and Research

The strength of CH–aryl interactions (ΔG) in 14 solvents was determined via the conformational analysis of a molecular torsion balance. The molecular balance adopted folded and unfolded conformers in which the ratio of the conformers in solution provided a quantitative measure of ΔG as a function of solvation. While a single empirical solvent parameter based on solvent polarity failed to explain solvent effect in the molecular balance, it is shown that these ΔG values can be correlated through a multiparameter linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) using the equation introduced by Kamlet and Taft. The resulting LSER …

Assessing Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions In European Medium And Large Cities: Methodological Considerations, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Jochen Albrecht, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia Jan 2016

Assessing Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions In European Medium And Large Cities: Methodological Considerations, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Jochen Albrecht, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia

Publications and Research

Policymakers need clear, consistent, and reliable information about the location of greenhouse gases and drivers of emitting activity in order to design appropriate mitigating strategies. At the urban scale, there have been challenges in developing consistent and reliable emissions inventories. This chapter examines selected methods to determine greenhouse gas emissions at the urban scale. We describe the various criteria considered when constructing an urban greenhouse gas protocol including the definition of urban, the gasses that are measured, the source they come from, the scope of analysis and how the measurements are undertaken. We then present results for European medium and …

Engineering Semiconductor Hybrids For Sensing, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Danhong Huang Jan 2016

Engineering Semiconductor Hybrids For Sensing, Godfrey Gumbs, Andrii Iurov, Danhong Huang

Publications and Research

The effect of screening of the coulomb interaction between two layers of two-dimensional electrons, such as in graphene, by a highly doped semiconducting substrate is investigated. We employ the random-phase approximation to calculate the dispersion equation of this hybrid structure in order to determine the plasmon excitation spectrum. When an electric current is passed through a layer, the low-frequency plasmons in the layer may bifurcate into separate streams due to the current-driving effect. At a critical wave vector, determined by the separation between layers and their distance from the surface, their phase velocities may be in opposite directions and a …

Generalizing Liouville-Type Problems For Differential 1-Forms From Lq Spaces To Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu, Ye Li Jan 2016

Generalizing Liouville-Type Problems For Differential 1-Forms From Lq Spaces To Non-Lq Spaces, Lina Wu, Ye Li

Publications and Research

We obtain Liouville-type results for closed and p-pseudo-coclosed differential 1-forms ! with energy of lim inf r!1 1 r2 R B(x0;r) j!jqdv < 1 (that is, 2-finite growth), which extends finite q-energy ( R M j!jqdv < 1) in Lq spaces to infinite q-energy ( R M j!jqdv = 1) in non-Lq spaces. In particular, we recapture mathematicians' vanishing results of Liouville- type theorem for ! with finite q-energy in Lq spaces. Our method in this paper provides a successful way to work on Liouville-type problems for differential forms with a variety of energy conditions in broad spaces.

Kpp And Kkp Clusters, Roman Ya. Kezerashvili, Shalva M. Tsiklauri, Igor N. Filikhin, Vladimir M. Suslov, Branislav Vlahovic

Publications and Research

The three-body kaonic Kpp and KKp clusters are studied using the method of hyperspherical harmonics (HH) in momentum representation and differential Faddeev equations (DFE). We use different NN and KN interactions. Results obtained by the methods of HH and DFE are in reasonable agreement. The binding energy and the width show very strong dependence on the KN potential. We have two different classes of results: the results based on phenomenological strong KN potential, and the results obtained with much weaker chiral SU(3)-based KN potential.

Publications and Research

Over the past twenty years our understanding of the Middle Preclassic (900–300 BCE) period has become much clearer through archaeological investigations at a number of sites located in the Upper Belize River Valley region of the eastern Maya Lowlands. While the picture of Middle Preclassic Maya life, including their material culture, has sharpened, there are aspects that remain uninvestigated. One artifact type, identified as greenstone triangulates, has been found at several Belize Valley sites and in a variety of contexts. Although a number of these multifaceted, polished groundstone items have been recovered, little research has focused on their distribution and …

Effect Of Impurities On The Josephson Current Through Helical Metals: Exploiting A Neutrino Paradigm, V. Parameswaran Nair, Pouyan Ghaemi Jan 2016

Effect Of Impurities On The Josephson Current Through Helical Metals: Exploiting A Neutrino Paradigm, V. Parameswaran Nair, Pouyan Ghaemi

Publications and Research

In this letter we study the effect of time-reversal symmetric impurities on the Josephson supercurrent through two dimensional helical metals such as on topological insulator surface state. We show that contrary to the usual superconducting-normal metal-superconducting junctions, the suppression of supercurrent in superconducting-helical metal-superconducting junction is mainly due to fluctuations of impurities in the junctions. Our results, which is a condensed matter realization of a part of the MSW effect for neutrinos, shows that the relationship between normal state conductance and critical current of Josephson junctions is significantly modified for Josephson junctions on the surface of topological insulators. We also …

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian Jan 2016

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian

Publications and Research

Modern Java languages introduce several new features that offer significant improvements over older Java technology. In this article we consider the new enum construct, which provides language support for enumerated types. Prior to recent Java languages, programmers needed to employ various patterns (e.g., the weak enum pattern) to compensate for the absence of enumerated types in Java. Unfortunately, these compensation patterns lack several highly-desirable properties of the enum construct, most notably, type safety. We present a novel fully-automated approach for transforming legacy Java code to use the new enumeration construct. This semantics-preserving approach increases type safety, produces code that is …
