Satellite Retrievals Of Karenia Brevis Harmful Algal Blooms In The West Florida Shelf Using Neural Networks And Comparisons With Other Techniques, Ahmed El-Habashi, Ioannis Ioannou, Michelle Tomlinson, Richard P. Stumpf, Sam Ahmed
Publications and Research
We describe the application of a Neural Network (NN) previously developed by us, to the detection and tracking, of Karenia brevis Harmful Algal Blooms (KB HABs) that plague the coasts of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite observations. Previous approaches for the detection of KB HABs in the WFS primarily used observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Aqua (MODIS-A) satellite. They depended on the remote sensing reflectance signal at the 678 nm chlorophyll fluorescence band (Rrs678) needed for both the normalized fluorescence height (nFLH) and Red Band Difference algorithms (RBD) currently used. …
Brane Brick Models And 2d (0, 2) Triality, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong
Brane Brick Models And 2d (0, 2) Triality, Sebastian Franco, Sangmin Lee, Rak-Kyeong Seong
Publications and Research
We provide a brane realization of 2d (0; 2) Gadde-Gukov-Putrov triality in terms of brane brick models. These are Type IIA brane configurations that are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Triality translates into a local transformation of brane brick models, whose simplest representative is a cube move. We present explicit examples and construct their triality networks. We also argue that the classical mesonic moduli space of brane brick model theories, which corresponds to the probed Calabi-Yau 4-fold, is invariant under triality. Finally, we discuss triality in terms of phase boundaries, which play a central role in connecting …
The Synthesis Of Angucyclines Using An Intramolecular Bradsher Cycloaddition, Abdullah Allaoa, Tony E. Nicolas
The Synthesis Of Angucyclines Using An Intramolecular Bradsher Cycloaddition, Abdullah Allaoa, Tony E. Nicolas
Publications and Research
The Angucyclines are natural products which possess a broad spectrum of biological properties. Of particular interest are the natural products which contain the cis-hydroxyl motif at the AB ring junction. Their synthesis is particularly challenging. Our model study has resulted in the synthesis of a model of the angucyclines with the required cis-hydroxyl features. The present work will apply the previously developed chemistry to an intramolecular version which will lead to the synthesis of the ABC ring system

Basic arithmetic forms the foundation of the math courses that students will face in their undergraduate careers. It is therefore crucial that students have a solid understanding of these fundamental concepts. At an open- access university offering both two-year and four-year degrees, incoming freshmen who were identified as lacking in basic arithmetic skills were engaged in an experimental technology-enhanced workshop designed to provide them with a deeper understanding of arithmetic prior to their initial remedial coursework. Customized online content was created specifically for this experiment, and the first implementation (n=27) yielded statistically significant improvement, not only from pretest to post- …

Animal venoms comprise a diversity of peptide toxins that manipulate molecular targets such as ion channels and receptors, making venom peptides attractive candidates for the development of therapeutics to benefit human health. However, identifying bioactive venom peptides remains a significant challenge. In this review we describe our particular venomics strategy for the discovery, characterization, and optimization of Terebridae venom peptides, teretoxins. Our strategy reflects the scientific path from mollusks to medicine in an integrative sequential approach with the following steps: (1) delimitation of venomous Terebridae lineages through taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses; (2) identification and classification of putative teretoxins through omics …

Publications and Research
We report on the synthesis, characterization, and stability studies of new titanocene complexes containing a methyl group and a carboxylate ligand (mba = −OC(O)-p-C6H4-S−) bound to gold(I)−N-heterocyclic carbene fragments through the thiolate group: [(η5-C5H5)2TiMe(μ-mba)Au(NHC)]. The cytotoxicities of the heterometallic compounds along with those of novel monometallic gold−N-heterocyclic carbene precursors [(NHC)Au(mbaH)] have been evaluated against renal, prostate, colon, and breast cancer cell lines. The highest activity and selectivity and a synergistic effect of the resulting heterometallic species was found for the prostate and colon cancer cell lines. The colocalization of both titanium and gold metals (1:1 ratio) in PC3 prostate cancer …

Ensemble Noise Filtering For Streaming Data Using Poisson Bootstrap Model Filtering, Ashwin Satyanarayana, Rosemary Chinchilla
Ensemble Noise Filtering For Streaming Data Using Poisson Bootstrap Model Filtering, Ashwin Satyanarayana, Rosemary Chinchilla
Publications and Research
Ensemble filtering techniques filter noisy instances by combining the predictions of multiple base models, each of which is learned using a traditional algorithm. However, in the last decade, due to the massive increase in the amount of online streaming data, ensemble filtering methods, which largely operate in batch mode and requires multiple passes over the data, cause time and storage complexities. In this paper, we present an ensemble bootstrap model filtering technique with multiple inductive learning algorithms on several small Poisson bootstrapped samples of online data to filter noisy instances. We analyze three prior filtering techniques using Bayesian computational analysis …

Data Mining Using Ensemble Classifiers For Improved Prediction Of Student Academic Performance, Ashwin Satyanarayana, Mariusz Nuckowski
Publications and Research
In the last decade Data mining (DM) has been applied in the field of education, and is an emerging interdisciplinary research field also known as Educational Data Mining (EDM). One of the goals of EDM is to better understand how to predict student academic performance given personal, socio-economic, psychological and other environmental attributes. Another goal is to identify factors and rules that influence educational academic outcomes. In this paper, we use multiple classifiers (Decision Trees-J48, Naïve Bayes and Random Forest) to improve the quality of student data by eliminating noisy instances, and hence improving predictive accuracy. We also identify association …

Discovery And Characterisation Of A Novel Toxin From Dendroaspis Angusticeps, Named Tx7335, That Activates The Potassium Channel Kcsa, Ivan O. Rivera-Torres, Tony B. Jin, Martine Cadene, Brian T. Chait, Sébastien F. Poget
Publications and Research
Due to their central role in essential physiological processes, potassium channels are common targets for animal toxins. These toxins in turn are of great value as tools for studying channel function and as lead compounds for drug development. Here, we used a direct toxin pull-down assay with immobilised KcsA potassium channel to isolate a novel KcsA-binding toxin (called Tx7335) from eastern green mamba snake (Dendroaspis angusticeps) venom. Sequencing of the toxin by Edman degradation and mass spectrometry revealed a 63 amino acid residue peptide with 4 disulphide bonds that belongs to the three-finger toxin family, but with a unique modification …

Estimating The Probability Of Vegetation To Be Groundwater Dependent Based On The Evaluation Of Tree Models, Isabel C. Pérez Hoyos, Nir Y. Krakauer, Reza Khanbilvardi
Publications and Research
Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) are increasingly threatened by humans’ rising demand for water resources. Consequently, it is imperative to identify the location of GDEs to protect them. This paper develops a methodology to identify the probability of an ecosystem to be groundwater dependent. Probabilities are obtained by modeling the relationship between the known locations of GDEs and factors influencing groundwater dependence, namely water table depth and climatic aridity index. Probabilities are derived for the state of Nevada, USA, using modeled water table depth and aridity index values obtained from the Global Aridity database. The model selected results from the performance …

Ensembles of general circulation model (GCM) integrations yield predictions for meteorological conditions in future months. Such predictions have implicit uncertainty resulting from model structure, parameter uncertainty, and fundamental randomness in the physical system. In this work, we build probabilistic models for long-term forecasts that include the GCM ensemble values as inputs but incorporate statistical correction of GCM biases and different treatments of uncertainty. Specifically, we present, and evaluate against observations, several versions of a probabilistic forecast for gridded air temperature 1 month ahead based on ensemble members of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Version 2 …

A Review Of Advances In The Identification And Characterization Of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems Using Geospatial Technologies, Isabel C. Pérez Hoyos, Nir Y. Krakauer, Reza Khanbilvardi, Roy A. Armstrong
Publications and Research
Groundwater Dependent Ecosystem (GDE) protection is increasingly being recognized as essential for the sustainable management and allocation of water resources. GDE services are crucial for human well-being and for a variety of flora and fauna. However, the conservation of GDEs is only possible if knowledge about their location and extent is available. Several studies have focused on the identification of GDEs at specific locations using ground-based measurements. However, recent progress in remote sensing technologies and their integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has provided alternative ways to map GDEs at a much larger spatial extent. This paper presents a review …

We report a detailed experimental study of (i) pressure-induced transformations in glycerol–water mixtures at T = 77 K and P = 0–1.8 GPa, and (ii) heating-induced transformations of glycerol–water mixtures recovered at 1 atm and T = 77 K. Our samples are prepared by cooling the solutions at ambient pressure at various cooling rates (100 K s1–10 K h1) and for the whole range of glycerol mole fractions, wg. Depending on concentration and cooling rates, cooling leads to samples containing amorphous ice (wg Z 0.20), ice (wg r 0.32), and/or ‘‘distorted ice’’ (0 o wg r 0.38). Upon compression, we …

Review Paper: The Shape Of Phylogenetic Treespace, Katherine St. John
Publications and Research
Trees are a canonical structure for representing evolutionary histories. Many popular criteria used to infer optimal trees are computationally hard, and the number of possible tree shapes grows super-exponentially in the number of taxa. The underlying structure of the spaces of trees yields rich insights that can improve the search for optimal trees, both in accuracy and in running time, and the analysis and visualization of results. We review the past work on analyzing and comparing trees by their shape as well as recent work that incorporates trees with weighted branch lengths.

This article presents the development of an underwater gripper that utilizes soft robotics technology to delicately manipulate and sample fragile species on the deep reef. Existing solutions for deep sea robotic manipulation have historically been driven by the oil industry, resulting in destructive interactions with undersea life. Soft material robotics relies on compliant materials that are inherently impedance matched to natural environments and to soft or fragile organisms. We demonstrate design principles for soft robot end effectors, bench-top characterization of their grasping performance, and conclude by describing in situ testing at mesophotic depths. The result is the first use of …

We consider soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a Higgs boson at hadron colliders. In particular, we present a softgluon resummation formula for this production process and gather all elements needed to evaluate it at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. We employ these results to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) formulas, and implement them in a bespoke parton-level Monte Carlo program which can be used to calculate the total cross section along with arbitrary differential distributions. We use this tool to study the phenomenological impact of the approximate NNLO corrections, finding that they increase …

Long-range weather forecasts based on output from ensembles of computer simulations are attracting increasing interest. A variety of methods have been proposed to convert the ensemble outputs to calibrated probabilistic forecasts. The package presented here (SeFo, for Seasonal Forecasting) implements a number of methods for producing forecasts of monthly surface air temperature anomalies up to 9 months in advance using output from the North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME). The package contains modules for downloading and reading past observations and ensemble output; producing forecast probability distributions; and verifying and calibrating a user-determined subset of methods using arbitrary past periods. By changing …

Topological insulators are potentially transformative quantum solids with metallic surface states which have Dirac band structure and are immune to disorder. Ubiquitous charged bulk defects, however, pull the Fermi energy into the bulk bands, denying access to surface charge transport. Here we demonstrate that irradiation with swift (B2.5MeV energy) electron beams allows to compensate these defects, bring the Fermi level back into the bulk gap and reach the charge neutrality point (CNP). Controlling the beam fluence, we tune bulk conductivity from p- (hole-like) to n-type (electron-like), crossing the Dirac point and back, while preserving the Dirac energy dispersion. The CNP …

Performance Modeling Of Cmos Inverters Using Support Vector Machines (Svm) And Adaptive Sampling, Ashwin Satyanarayana
Publications and Research
Integrated circuit designs are verified through the use of circuit simulators before being reproduced in real silicon. In order for any circuit simulation tool to accurately predict the performance of a CMOS design, it should generate models to predict the transistor’s electrical characteristics. The circuit simulation tools have access to massive amounts of data that are not only dynamic but generated at high speed in real time, hence making fast simulation a bottleneck in integrated circuit design. Using all the available data is prohibitive due to memory and time constraints. Accurate and fast sampling has been shown to enhance processing …

Existence of robust edge states at interfaces of topologically dissimilar systems is one of the most fascinating manifestations of a novel nontrivial state of matter, a topological insulator. Such nontrivial states were originally predicted and discovered in condensed matter physics, but they find their counterparts in other fields of physics, including the physics of classical waves and electromagnetism. Here, we present the first experimental realization of a topological insulator for electromagnetic waves based on engineered bianisotropic metamaterials. By employing the near-field scanning technique, we demonstrate experimentally the topologically robust propagation of electromagnetic waves around sharp corners without backscattering effects.

This work provides new insights in the field of applied photochemistry based on semiconductor-free nanoporous carbons and its application to sunlight energy harvesting. Using carbon materials of increasing average pore size, chemical functionalization to introduce a variety of O- and S-containing functional groups and monochromatic light, we have shown the dependence of the photochemical conversion of phenol in the confinement of the carbons nanopore space with the wavelength of the irradiation source, the dimensions of the pore voids and their surface chemistry. The photochemical conversion of phenol inside the carbons pore space was found to be very sensitive to the …

Age And Employee Green Behaviors: A Meta-Analysis, Brenton M. Wiernik, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones
Publications and Research
Recent economic and societal developments have led to an increasing emphasis on organizational environmental performance. At the same time, demographic trends are resulting in increasingly aging labor forces in many industrialized nations. Commonly held stereotypes suggest that older workers are less likely to be environmentally responsible than younger workers. To evaluate the degree to which such age differences are present, we meta-analyzed 132 independent correlations and 336 d-values based on 4676 professional workers from 22 samples in 11 countries. Contrary to popular stereotypes, age showed small positive relationships with pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that older adults engaged in these workplace …

Improving Landslide Hazard And Risk Mapping In Guatemala Using Terrain Aspect, Yuri Gorohkovich, Elia Axinia Machado, Luis Ivan Giron Melgar, Mahta Ghahremani
Publications and Research
Guatemala is in the path of numerous atmospheric hazards that trigger landslides by saturating mountain slopes with water reducing their safety factor. Available local studies of landslide characterization in Guatemala have indicated the importance of slope in hazard and risk mapping, but, for the most part, ignored another topographic index: aspect. However, many regional studies analyzing the effect of hurricanes on terrain show that Caribbean and Central American locations experience higher impact from hurricanes and storms on eastern, southeastern, southern and southwestern slopes. Since hazard and risk mapping focuses on infrastructure and settlements located on slopes with various orientations, this …

Towards Improving Interface Modularity In Legacy Java Software Through Automated Refactoring, Raffi Khatchadourian, Olivia Moore, Hidehiko Masuhara

The skeletal implementation pattern is a software design pattern that defines an abstract class that provides a partial interface implementation. However, since Java allows only single class inheritance, if implementers decide to extend a skeletal implementation, they will not be allowed to extend any other class. Also, discovering the skeletal implementation may require a global analysis. Java 8 enhanced interfaces alleviate these problems by enabling interfaces to contain (default) method implementations, which implementers inherit. Java classes are then free to extend a different class, and a separate abstract class is no longer needed; developers considering implementing an interface need only …

We show that low-mass-scale string compactifications, with a generic D-brane configuration that realizes the standard model by open strings, can explain the relatively broad peak in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum at 750GeV recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Under reasonable assumptions, we demonstrate that the excess could originate from a closed string (possibly axionic) excitation ϕthat has a coupling with gauge kinetic terms. We estimate the ϕ production rate from photon–photon fusion in elastic pp scattering, using the effective photon and narrow width approximations. For string scales above today’slower limit Ms≈7TeV, we can accommodate the diphoton rate …

We predict the existence of low-frequency nonlocal plasmons at the vacuum-surface interface of a superlattice of N graphene layers interacting with conducting substrate. We derive a dispersion function that incorporates the polarization function of both the graphene monolayers and the semi-infinite electron liquid at whose surface the electrons scatter specularly. We find a surface plasmon-polariton that is not damped by particle-hole excitations or the bulk modes and which separates below the continuum mini-band of bulk plasmon modes. The surface plasmon frequency of the hybrid structure always lies below s = p/ 2, the surface plasmon frequency of the conducting substrate. …
