Radiation Damage Threshold Of Satellite Cots Components: Raspberry Pi Zero For Opal Cubesat, Jonh Mojica Decena, Brian Wood, Ryan J. Martineau, Jr Dennison, Michael Tayor

The use of inexpensive microprocessors or commercial of the shelf (COTS) components is one of the most common cost-saving methods in the constructions of CubeSats. Design of electronics that can maintain full functionality over the duration of the mission requires careful determination of the space radiation environment and total ionizing dose (TID) delivered to the components. Larger, more expensive or longer mission satellites tend to use more expensive components than the ones used in CubeSat to assure reliability. Radiation survivability of a Raspberry Pi Zero was studied with the USU Space Survivability Test Chamber using 0.2 to 2.5 MeV beta …

The spatial resolution of Pulsed Electroacoustic (PEA) measurements can be limited by the acoustic thickness of the coupling material coupling the sample to the detector assembly. Our investigations studied the effect of adhesive material and thickness to optimize the quality of the PEA signal.

Wireless intra-spacecraft communication systems are being developed due to their potential for weight-saving and design flexibility compared to wired systems [1,2]. Such systems are essentially an on-board Wi-Fi network allowing various spacecraft systems to communicate wirelessly.

Investigating The Opal Cubesat’S Ability To Measure Thermospheric Gravity Waves, Kenneth Zia, Michael J. Taylor, Ludger Scherliess

Understanding the Earth’s lower thermosphere is of high interest to the space science community because of competing forcing due to solar heating above and episodic wave forcing from below. The NSF sponsored OPAL cubesat is designed to measure the temperature profile in this region by observing day-time O2 A time O2 A-band (~760nm) emission on the limb and is expected to be launched from the ISS (International Space Station). To band (~760nm) emission on the limb and is expected to be launched from the ISS (International Space Station). To investigate the instrument’s ability to detect space weather signatures (i.e. solar …

Characterizing The Effects Of Radiation On Muscle Cells, Lori Caldwell, Elizabeth Vargis, Charles Harding, Jr Dennison

Posters

One of the primary concerns for those spending time in low gravity and high radiation environments is muscle atrophy. A major cause of muscular atrophy is oxidative stress which is amplified by increased levels of ionizing radiation during spaceflight. Additionally, high levels of radiation can damage DNA, increasing the risk of cancer. Utah State University’s Space Environment Test Facility was used to irradiate C2C12 myoblasts and human vascular endothelial cells with a beta-radiation dosage mimicking that on the International Space Station and a 3-year deep space mission.

Designing A Microfluidic Sorting Network With Heat Treated Plastic, Houghton Yonge '18, Fuming Qui '19, Viva R. Horowitz

A microfluidic device is necessary to sort nanodiamonds based on their luminescence. We explored utilizing the repeatable shrinkage of heat treated Shrinky Dink (polystyrene) sheets in an effort to find an easier, cheaper alternative to the traditional photolithography process. Our work found encouraging results but the plastic’s capabilities must be further studied to decisively determine its usefulness.

Temperature Dependency Of Electrostatic Breakdown In Ldpe And Peek, Tyler Kippen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison Feb 2017

Temperature Dependency Of Electrostatic Breakdown In Ldpe And Peek, Tyler Kippen, Allen Andersen, Jr Dennison

Posters

Electrostatic breakdown is a leading cause of many of the anomalies and failures attributed to spacecraft interactions with the space environment. It is therefore critical to understand how the electrostatic field strength varies due to changing environmental conditions, including temperature and radiation dose. Standard step-up to electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests were performed on two polymers, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Tests were done at room temperature and at other temperatures ranging from ~130 K to ~350 K. Preliminary analysis found that samples tested at a higher temperature had lower average breakdown field strength and a narrower distribution of …

Understanding observed space environment effects on biological organisms such seeds are important in design of long duration space missions, such as to those planned for Mars, where appropriate storage and growth of food resources is essential. Evaluation of the effects of the real and simulated space environment on seed germination and growth in space is the purpose of this research. Preliminary tests of germination rate and growth of radish seeds in a controlled environment have identified statistically significant differences between control samples and seeds flown for 30 days in low earth orbit on the Bion M-1 launch capsule Russian research …
