Synopsis We demonstrate that the possibility of monitoring relative photoionization cross sections over a large photon energy range extending to hard x-rays allows studying and disentangling shake processes and intramolecular inelastic scattering effects. An "EXAFS"-type of oscillatory behavior of the relative C 1s cross sections is observed in a wide photon energy range up to 1 keV due to multiple intramolecular elastic scattering of the photoelectron. These effects are also present in solids and constitute a significant part of all elastic and inelastic scattering effects occurring in solids.

We Explore The Stability Of The Phase Separation Phenomenon In Few-Fermion Spin-1/2 Systems Confined In A Double-Well Potential. It Is Shown That Within The SU(2) Symmetric Case, Where The Total Spin Is Conserved, The Phase Separation Cannot Be Fully Stabilized. An Interaction Regime Characterized By Metastable Phase Separation Emerges For Intermediate Interactions Which Is Inherently Related With Ferromagnetic Spin-Spin Correlations Emerging Within Each Of The Wells. The Breaking Of The SU(2) Symmetry Crucially Affects The Stability Properties Of The System As The Phase Separated State Can Be Stabilized Even For Weak Magnetic Potential Gradients. Our Results Imply An Intricate Relation …

Two recent experimental observations at the ATOMKI Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (regarding the angular emission pattern of electron-positron pairs from nuclear transitions from excited states in 8Be and 4He) indicate the possible existence of a particle of a rest mass energy of roughly 17 MeV. The so-called X17 particle constitutes a virtual state in the process, preceding the emission of the electron-positron pair. Based on the symmetry of the nuclear transitions (1+ → 0+ and 0- →0 +), the X17 could either be a vector, or a pseudoscalar particle. Here, we …

We investigate ionization of atomic hydrogen by electron-and positron-impact. We apply the Coulomb-Born (CB1) approximation, various modified CB1 approximations, the three-body distorted wave (3DW) approximation, and the time-dependent close-coupling (TDCC) method to electron-impact ionization of hydrogen. For electron-impact ionization of hydrogen for an incident energy of approximately 76.45 eV, we obtain a deep minimum in the CB1 triply differential cross section (TDCS). However, the TDCC for 74.45 eV and the 3DW for 74.46 eV gave a dip in the TDCS. For positron-hydrogen ionization (breakup) we apply the CB1 approximation and a modified CB1 approximation. We obtain a deep minimum in …

We Explore The Time Evolution Of Two Impurities In A Trapped One-Dimensional Bose Gas That Follows A Change Of The Boson-Impurity Interaction. We Study The Induced Impurity-Impurity Interactions And Their Effect On The Quench Dynamics. In Particular, We Report On The Size Of The Impurity Cloud, The Impurity-Impurity Entanglement, And The Impurity-Impurity Correlation Function. The Presented Numerical Simulations Are Based Upon The Variational Multilayer Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree Method For Bosons. To Analyze And Quantify Induced Impurity-Impurity Correlations, We Employ An Effective Two-Body Hamiltonian With A Contact Interaction. We Show That The Effective Model Consistent With The Mean-Field Attraction Of Two …

We Investigate The Nonequilibrium Quantum Dynamics Of One And Two Heavy Fermionic Impurities Being Harmonically Trapped And Repulsively Interacting With A Finite Ensemble Of Majority Fermions. A Quench Of The Potential Of The Majority Species From A Double-Well To A Harmonic Trap Is Applied, Enforcing Its Counterflow, Which In Turn Perturbs The Impurities. For Weak Repulsions, It Is Shown That The Mixture Undergoes A Periodic Mixing And Demixing Dynamics, While Stronger Interactions Lead To A More Pronounced Dynamical Spatial Separation. In The Presence Of Correlations, The Impurity Exhibits An Expansion Dynamics Which Is Absent In The Hartree-Fock Case, Resulting In …

Structural disorder has been known to suppress carrier concentration and carrier mobility in common covalent semiconductors, such as silicon, by orders of magnitude. This is expected from a reduced overlap of the electron clouds on neighboring orbitals and the formation of localized tail states near the band edges caused by local distortions and lack of periodicity in the amorphous phase. In striking contrast to the covalent semiconductors, wide-bandgap oxides of post-transition metals with ionic bonding not only allow for crystalline-like electron mobility upon amorphization, but also exhibit two orders of magnitude higher carrier concentration in the disordered phase as compared …

Abstract: We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the electron-impact ionization dynamics of H2 at an impact-energy of 520 eV. The molecular-frame fivefold-differential cross sections were measured for electron emission in the plane perpendicular to the incoming projectile beam. An (e, 2e + ion) triple coincidence method was used covering projectile scattering angles of 6.5°, 10.0° and 20.0° and ejected energies of 20 eV and 30 eV. The experimental cross sections are compared with results from the multi-center distorted-wave (MCDW) as well as the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) approaches. M3DW is in overall better agreement with the …

We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed within a source distance of approximately 20 Mpc during the first and second observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No significant gravitational-wave candidate was detected. We report the detection efficiencies as a function of the distance for waveforms derived from multidimensional numerical simulations and phenomenological extreme emission models. The sources with neutrino-driven explosions are detectable at the distances approaching 5 kpc, and for magnetorotationally driven explosions the distances are up to 54 kpc. However, waveforms for extreme emission models are detectable up to …

We have measured characteristic K x rays in coincidence with the scattered particles from collisions of hydrogenlike Ge ions with Kr atoms. The ions were first accelerated to 8.6 MeV/amu, post-stripped to H-like charge state, and decelerated to around 2.5 MeV/amu. From the measurements the probabilities for K-shell to K-shell charge transfer as a function of collision impact parameters were obtained. The probabilities show an onset of oscillations which are interpreted as quantum interference between the K-shell to K-shell electron transfer amplitudes in two spatially separated coupling regions in the incoming and outgoing parts of the collision. The probabilities of …

Spin triplet superconductivity in the Kondo lattice UTe2 appears to be associated with spin fluctuations originating from incipient ferromagnetic order. Here we show clear evidence of twofold enhancement of superconductivity under pressure, which discontinuously transitions to magnetic order, likely of ferromagnetic nature, at higher pressures. The application of a magnetic field tunes the system back across a first-order phase boundary. Straddling this phase boundary, we find another example of reentrant superconductivity in UTe2. As the superconductivity and magnetism exist on two opposite sides of the first-order phase boundary, our results indicate other microscopic mechanisms may be playing …

For The Ground State Of Two Non-Interacting Impurities We Reveal Signatures Of Attractive Induced Interactions In Both Cases Of Attractive Or Repulsive Interspecies Interactions, While A Weak Impurity-Impurity Repulsion Forces The Impurities To Stay Apart. Turning To The Quench Dynamics We Inspect The Time-Evolution Of The Contrast Unveiling The Existence, Dynamical Deformation And The Orthogonality Catastrophe Of Bose Polarons. We Find That For An Increasing Postquench Repulsion The Impurities Reside In A Superposition Of …

We have measured differential yields for double capture and double capture accompanied by ionization in 75 keV p + Ar collisions. Data were taken for two different transverse projectile coherence lengths. A small effect of the projectile coherence properties on the yields were found for double capture, but not for double capture plus ionization. The results suggest that multiple projectile-target interactions can lead to a significant weakening of projectile coherence effects.

On 2019 April 25, the LIGO Livingston detector observed a compact binary coalescence with signal-to-noise ratio 12.9. The Virgo detector was also taking data that did not contribute to detection due to a low signal-to-noise ratio, but were used for subsequent parameter estimation. The 90% credible intervals for the component masses range from to if we restrict the dimensionless component spin magnitudes to be smaller than 0.05). These mass parameters are consistent with the individual binary components being neutron stars. However, both the source-frame chirp mass and the total mass of this system are significantly larger than those of any …

Based on the priorO1-O2observing runs, about30%of the data collected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo Internext observing runs are expected tobe single-interferometer data, i.e. they will be collected at times when only one detector in the network is operating in observing mode. Searches for gravitational-wave signals from supernova events do not rely on matched filtering techniques because of the stochastic nature of the signals. If a Galactic supernova occurs during single-interferometer times, separation of its unmodelled gravitational-wave signal from noise will be even more difficult due to lack of coherence between detectors. We present a novel machine learning method to perform …

At Resonant Drivings, The Impurities Decouple From Their Host, While If Exposed To A High-Frequency Driving, They Remain Trapped In The Bosonic Gas. For Continuous Shaking, We Showcase That In The Resonantly Driven Regime The Impurities Oscillate Back And Forth Within And Outside The Bosonic Medium. …

GW170817 is the very first observation of gravitational waves originating from the coalescence of two compact objects in the mass range of neutron stars, accompanied by electromagnetic counterparts, and offers an opportunity to directly probe the internal structure of neutron stars. We perform Bayesian model selection on a wide range of theoretical predictions for the neutron star equation of state. For the binary neutron star hypothesis, we find that we cannot rule out the majority of theoretical models considered. In addition, the gravitational-wave data alone does not rule out the possibility that one or both objects were low-mass black holes. …

Upon Quenching The Tilt Of The Double Well It Is Found That The Quench-Induced Tunneling Dynamics Depends Crucially On The Interspecies Interaction Strength And The Presence Of Entanglement Inherent In The System. In Particular, For Weak Couplings The Impurity Performs A Rather Irregular Tunneling Process In The Double Well. Increasing The Interspecies Coupling It Is Possible To Control The Response Of The Impurity Which Undergoes A Delayed Tunneling While The Majority Species Effectively Acts As …

The thermal conductivities along the basal and hexagonal directions of α-quartz silica, the low-temperature form of crystalline SiO2, are predicted from the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation combined with the van Beest, Kramer, and van Santen potential for the temperature up to 900 K and the pressure as high as 4 GPa. The thermal conductivities at atmospheric pressure, which show a negative and nonlinear dependence on temperature, are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The influence of pressure on thermal conductivity is positive and linear. The pressure (P) and temperature (T) dependences of the thermal conductivity …

Fundamental electronic principles underlying all transition metal compounds are the symmetry and filling of the d-electron orbitals and the influence of this filling on structural configurations and responses. Here we use a sensitive local structural technique, x-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis, to reveal the presence of fluctuating local-structural distortions at high temperature in one such compound, CuIr2S4. We show that this hitherto overlooked fluctuating symmetry-lowering is electronic in origin and will modify the energy-level spectrum and electronic and magnetic properties. The explanation is a local, fluctuating, orbital-degeneracy-lifted state. The natural extension of our result would …

This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of LIGO data by using an improved frequency domain matched filter, the J-statistic, and by analyzing data from Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 650 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. The defect relaxation volumes obtained from density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of charged vacancies and interstitials are much larger than their neutral counterparts, seemingly unphysically large. We focus on UO2 as our primary material of interest, but also consider Si and GaAs to reveal the generality of our results. In this work, we investigate the possible reasons for this and revisit the methods that address the calculation of charged defects in periodic DFT. We probe the dependence of the proposed energy corrections to charged defect formation energies on relaxation volumes and find that corrections such as potential alignment remain ambiguous with …

The optical memory effect has emerged as a powerful tool for imaging through multiple-scattering media; however, the finite angular range of the memory effect limits the field of view. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that selective coupling of incident light into a high-transmission channel increases the angular memory-effect range. This enhancement is attributed to the robustness of the high-transmission channels against perturbations such as sample tilt or wave front tilt. Our work shows that the high-transmission channels provide an enhanced field of view for memory-effect-based imaging through diffusive media.

When formed through dynamical interactions, stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) may retain eccentric orbits (e > 0.1 at 10 Hz) detectable by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Eccentricity can therefore be used to differentiate dynamically formed binaries from isolated BBH mergers. Current template-based gravitational-wave searches do not use waveform models associated with eccentric orbits, rendering the search less efficient for eccentric binary systems. Here we present the results of a search for BBH mergers that inspiral in eccentric orbits using data from the first and second observing runs (O1 and O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. We carried out the search with …

Probability Density Of The Fractional Langevin Equation With Reflecting Walls, Thomas Vojta, Sarah Skinner, Ralf Metzler

We investigate anomalous diffusion processes governed by the fractional Langevin equation and confined to a finite or semi-infinite interval by reflecting potential barriers. As the random and damping forces in the fractional Langevin equation fulfill the appropriate fluctuation-dissipation relation, the probability density on a finite interval converges for long times towards the expected uniform distribution prescribed by thermal equilibrium. In contrast, on a semi-infinite interval with a reflecting wall at the origin, the probability density shows pronounced deviations from the Gaussian behavior observed for normal diffusion. If the correlations of the random force are persistent (positive), particles accumulate at the …
