Layered transition metal chalcogenides are promising hosts of electronic Weyl nodes and topological superconductivity. MoTe2 is a striking example that harbors both noncentrosymmetric Td and centrosymmetric T' phases, both of which have been identified as topologically nontrivial. Applied pressure tunes the structural transition separating these phases to zero temperature, stabilizing a mixed Td–T' matrix that entails a network of interfaces between the two nontrivial topological phases. Here, we show that this critical pressure range is characterized by distinct coherent quantum oscillations, indicating that the difference in topology between topologically nonvtrivial Td and T' phases gives …

Electrical magnetoresistance and tunnel diode oscillator measurements were performed under external magnetic fields up to 41 T applied along the crystallographic b axis (hard axis) of UTe2 as a function of temperature and applied pressures up to 18.8 kbar. In this work, we track the field-induced first-order transition between superconducting and magnetic field-polarized phases as a function of applied pressure, showing suppression of the transition with increasing pressure until the demise of superconductivity near 16 kbar and the appearance of a pressure-induced ferromagnetic-like ground state that is distinct from the field-polarized phase and stable at zero field. Together with …

We Unravel The Ground-State Properties And The Nonequilibrium Quantum Dynamics Of Two Bosonic Impurities Immersed In A One-Dimensional Fermionic Environment By Applying A Quench Of The Impurity-Medium Interaction Strength. In The Ground State, The Impurities And The Fermi Sea Are Phase Separated For Strong Impurity-Medium Repulsions While They Experience A Localization Tendency Around The Trap Center For Large Attractions. We Demonstrate The Presence Of Attractive Induced Interactions Mediated By The Host For Impurity-Medium Couplings Of Either Sign And Analyze The Competition Between Induced And Direct Interactions. A Quench To Repulsive Interactions Triggers A Breathing Motion In Both Components, With An …

We report on gravitational wave discoveries from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo between 1 April 2019 15:00 UTC and 1 October 2019 15:00 UTC. By imposing a false-alarm-rate threshold of two per year in each of the four search pipelines that constitute our search, we present 39 candidate gravitational wave events. At this threshold, we expect a contamination fraction of less than 10%. Of these, 26 candidate events were reported previously in near real-time through GCN Notices and Circulars; 13 are reported here for the first time. The catalog contains events whose sources are black …

We have performed kinematically complete experiments on single-electron capture in slow He2+-Ar collisions. Besides the pure capture to the He+ (n = 2) level, capture into the deep He+ ( n= 1) state with simultaneous excitation of another target electron is also observed. In contrast to the pure capture, the total cross section for this two-electron transition decreases with increasing collision energy, and its angular-differential cross section exhibits a much slighter slope. We take these observations as evidence for electron capture mediated by electron-electron interactions.

Selective excitation of a diffusive system's transmission eigenchannels enables manipulation of its internal energy distribution. The fluctuations and correlations of the eigenchannel's spatial profiles, however, remain unexplored so far. Here we show that the depth profiles of high-transmission eigenchannels exhibit low realization-to-realization fluctuations. Furthermore, our experimental and numerical studies reveal the existence of interchannel correlations, which are significant for low-transmission eigenchannels. Because high-transmission eigenchannels are robust and independent from other eigenchannels, they can reliably deliver energy deep inside turbid media.

We have measured fully momentum-analyzed recoiling target ions and scattered projectiles, produced in ionization of He and H2 by 75 keV proton impact, in coincidence. The momentum of the ejected electrons was deduced from momentum conservation. From the data we extracted fully differential ionization cross sections as a function of the polar electron emission angle (for fixed electron energies) and as a function of the electron energy (for fixed electron emission angles). Comparison between experiment and various distorted wave calculations confirms that under kinematic conditions where the post-collision interaction plays an important role, the few-body dynamics underlying the ionization …

We Propose And Investigate A Pump-Probe Spectroscopy Scheme To Unveil The Time-Resolved Dynamics Of Fermionic Or Bosonic Impurities Immersed In A Harmonically Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate. In This Scheme A Pump Pulse Initially Transfers The Impurities From A Noninteracting To A Resonantly Interacting Spin State And, After A Finite Time In Which The System Evolves Freely, The Probe Pulse Reverses This Transition. This Directly Allows Us To Monitor The Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of The Impurities As The Dynamical Formation Of Coherent Attractive Or Repulsive Bose Polarons And Signatures Of Their Induced Interactions Are Imprinted In The Probe Spectra. We Show That For …

Fractional Brownian motion (FBM), a non-Markovian self-similar Gaussian stochastic process with long-ranged correlations, represents a widely applied, paradigmatic mathematical model of anomalous diffusion. We report the results of large-scale computer simulations of FBM in one, two, and three dimensions in the presence of reflecting boundaries that confine the motion to finite regions in space. Generalizing earlier results for finite and semi-infinite one-dimensional intervals, we observe that the interplay between the long-time correlations of FBM and the reflecting boundaries leads to striking deviations of the stationary probability density from the uniform density found for normal diffusion. Particles accumulate at the boundaries …

On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85+21−14 M⊙ and 66+17−18 M⊙ (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only …

The application of the CPT (charge-conjugation, parity, and time reversal) theorem to an apple falling on Earth leads to the description of an anti-apple falling on anti–Earth (not on Earth). On the microscopic level, the Dirac equation in curved space-time simultaneously describes spin-1/2 particles and their antiparticles coupled to the same curved space-time metric (e.g., the metric describing the gravitational field of the Earth). On the macroscopic level, the electromagnetically and gravitationally coupled Dirac equation therefore describes apples and anti-apples, falling on Earth, simultaneously. A particle-to-antiparticle transformation of the gravitationally coupled Dirac equation therefore yields information on the behavior of …

Squeezing The Parameter Space For Lorentz Violation In The Neutrino Sector With Additional Decay Channels, Ulrich D. Jentschura

The hypothesis of Lorentz violation in the neutrino sector has intrigued scientists for the last two to three decades. A number of theoretical arguments support the emergence of such violations, first and foremost for neutrinos, which constitute the "most elusive" and "least interacting" particles known to mankind. It is of obvious interest to place stringent bounds on the Lorentz-violating parameters in the neutrino sector. In the past, the most stringent bounds have been placed by calculating the probability of neutrino decay into a lepton pair, a process made kinematically feasible by Lorentz violation in the neutrino sector, above a certain …

We report the observation of gravitational waves from a binary-black-hole coalescence during the first two weeks of LIGO's and Virgo's third observing run. The signal was recorded on April 12, 2019 at 05:30:44 UTC with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 19. The binary is different from observations during the first two observing runs most notably due to its asymmetric masses: a ∼30 Mʘ black hole merged with a ∼8 Mʘ black hole companion. The more massive black hole rotated with a dimensionless spin magnitude between 0.22 and 0.60 (90% probability). Asymmetric systems are predicted to emit gravitational waves …

We present a theoretical investigation of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) from impurity-doped materials. Based on the analysis of the exact numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) for one-dimensional models, we demonstrate the factorization of HHG yields as a product of an electron wave packet and the recombination cross section, in analogy to HHG from atoms and molecules in the gas phase. Furthermore, we show that the quantitative rescattering model based on this factorization accurately reproduces the TDSE results. This opens up new possibilities to study impurities in materials using the available techniques from strong-field physics.

We Investigate The Ground State Properties And The Nonequilibrium Dynamics Of A Lattice Trapped Bosonic Mixture Consisting Of An Impurity Species And A Finite-Sized Medium. For The Case Of One As Well As Two Impurities We Observe That, Depending On The Lattice Depth And The Interspecies Interaction Strength, A Transition From A Strongly Delocalized To A Localized Impurity Distribution Occurs. In The Latter Regime The Two Species Phase Separate, Thereby Forming A Particle-Hole Pair. For Two Impurities We Find That Below A Critical Lattice Depth They Are Delocalized Among Two Neighboring Outer Lattice Wells And Are Two-Body Correlated. This Transition …

In a recent paper [C. Jin, S.-J. Wang, X. Zhao, S.-F. Zhao, and C. D. Lin, Phys. Rev. A 101, 013429 (2020)2469-992610.1103/PhysRevA.101.013429], we reported that the position and depth of the minima in the harmonic spectra of CO2 molecules can be dramatically manipulated by a slight change of the degree of alignment, thus providing a convenient method of shaping attosecond pulses which could lead to the splitting of a typical single attosecond burst into two. Here, we demonstrate that harmonic minima can also be dramatically controlled by changing the pump-probe angles to shape attosecond pulses. In the meanwhile, since …

We study the collective excitations, i.e., the Goldstone (phase) mode and the Higgs (amplitude) mode, near the superfluid-Mott glass quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional system of disordered bosons. Using Monte Carlo simulations as well as an inhomogeneous quantum mean-field theory with Gaussian fluctuations, we show that the Higgs mode is strongly localized for all energies, leading to a noncritical scalar response. In contrast, the lowest-energy Goldstone mode undergoes a striking delocalization transition as the system enters the superfluid phase. We discuss the generality of these findings and experimental consequences, and we point out potential relations to many-body localization.

All vertebrate brains contain a dense matrix of thin fibers that release serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine), a neurotransmitter that modulates a wide range of neural, glial, and vascular processes. Perturbations in the density of this matrix have been associated with a number of mental disorders, including autism and depression, but its self-organization and plasticity remain poorly understood. We introduce a model based on reflected Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM), a rigorously defined stochastic process, and show that it recapitulates some key features of regional serotonergic fiber densities. Specifically, we use supercomputing simulations to model fibers as FBM-paths in two-dimensional brain-like domains and demonstrate …

A state of matter with a multi-component order parameter can give rise to vestigial order. In the vestigial phase, the primary order is only partially melted, leaving a remaining symmetry breaking behind, an effect driven by strong classical or quantum fluctuations. Vestigial states due to primary spin and charge-density-wave order have been discussed in iron-based and cuprate materials. Here we present the observation of a partially melted superconductivity in which pairing fluctuations condense at a separate phase transition and form a nematic state with broken Z3, i.e., three-state Potts-model symmetry. Thermal expansion, specific heat and magnetization measurements of …

For a long time, the predictive limits of perturbative quantum field theory have been limited by our inability to carry out loop calculations to an arbitrarily high order, which become increasingly complex as the order of perturbation theory is increased. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that perturbation series derived from loop diagram (Feynman diagram) calculations represent asymptotic (divergent) series which limits the predictive power of perturbative quantum field theory. Here, we discuss an ansatz that could overcome these limits, based on the observations that (i) for many phenomenologically relevant field theories, one can derive dispersion relations which relate …

The transmission of 1 keV Ar+ ions through a macroscopic glass capillary is simulated by taking explicitly into account the secondary electron (SE) emission generated by ion impacts inside the capillary. The SE emission re-distributes the injected charge in the capillary wall and thus modifies the guiding power of insulating capillaries. Especially for high beam intensities, SE are found to be crucial for explaining the observed time-evolution of the transmitted intensities.

In this dynamical model, the electrons' binding energies change throughout the collision ensuring the proper energy deposition by the projectile for multiple electron removal. Present results are relevant to the ion-therapy program, specially at irradiation planning stages in which detailed information on the electronic emission spectra are needed as input data.

In a joint experimental and theoretical collaboration, triple differential cross sections are presented for electron-impact single ionization of the 1t2 and 2a1 states of CH4 at an incident electron energy of 250 eV. Experimental data from two different laboratories are compared with molecular 3-body distorted wave (M3DW) and generalized Sturmian function (GSF) calculations. Overall, we find a good experiment-experiment, and also a relatively good experiment-theories, agreement. We observe that for the 1t2 state, similarly to ionization of atomic p-states, the peak is sometimes doubled.
