Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Inconel 718 Combustion Behavior In Promoted Oxygen Environments, Dominic George Dieguez
Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Inconel 718 Combustion Behavior In Promoted Oxygen Environments, Dominic George Dieguez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Promoted combustion testing is a vital tool for engineers to establish the combustion and flammability characteristics of materials (metallic or otherwise) in oxygen enriched environments. Historically, much of the established data for metallic promoted combustion has been with regards to materials in their cast and wrought forms. However, with the emergence of additive manufacturing as a preferred method of fabrication, the need exists to evaluate how metals in that form behave. Recent testing has demonstrated that even if a metal or alloy is nominally the same with regards to chemistry, flammability between samples in the wrought form can differ significantly …

Manipulation Of The Magnetic Properties Of Van Der Waals Materials Through External Stimuli, Luis Martinez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A new revolutionary application dependent on the electron spin to carry information with greater efficiency in data storage, transfer, and processing, will rely heavily on 2D magnets and the ability to effectively control their electron spins and engineer their properties. Previously, magnetic thin films were heavily studied to achieve this goal, however, these materials came with pitfalls and lacked naturally occurring 2D magnetism. The recent discovery of intrinsic magnetism in few-layered van der Waals (vdW) magnets has inspired researchers to extensively study them because of the feasibility to exfoliate them down to a monolayer. Due to this dimensionality factor, vdW …
Dynamic Storytelling Algorithms Using Contextual Aspects Of A Large Language Model, Alireza Pasha Nouri
Dynamic Storytelling Algorithms Using Contextual Aspects Of A Large Language Model, Alireza Pasha Nouri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Storytelling is a set of algorithms used to create narratives by connecting documents in a sequencethat accurately reflects the evolution of events and entities within a particular topic or theme. Early storytelling algorithms face challenges in encoding the progression and interconnections of information between consecutive texts, given that the conventional approaches rely primarily on connecting document pairs based on content overlap. They often neglect critical linguistic features, such as word contexts, semantics, the roles words play across different documents, and attention to the historical contexts of the underlying documents. Many existing storytelling models frequently produce story chains that, while connected …

Dispersal And Population Structure Of Euchlanis Chihuahuaensis Via Anemochory In The Chihuahuan Desert, Tristan Chavez-Poeschel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Desert ecosystems present challenges for aquatic organisms as habitats are fragmented, both in space and time; however, diapausing stages of rotifers can travel hundreds of kilometers during wind events. I used the rotifer Euchlanis chihuahuaensis as a model species to investigate the influence of wind dispersal on gene flow and population genetics in Chihuahuan Desert populations. I hypothesized that anemochory facilitates gene flow from source populations in the Northern Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico and the western United States to habitats in the Trans-Pecos region via delineated wind corridors. To test this hypothesis, the genetic diversity of populations from both inside …

Investigating The Roles Of Plants, Fungi, And Biocrusts In Nutrient Movement Within Dryland Ecosystems, Catherine E. Cort
Investigating The Roles Of Plants, Fungi, And Biocrusts In Nutrient Movement Within Dryland Ecosystems, Catherine E. Cort
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In dryland ecosystems, plant productivity and microbial decomposition are often separated in space and time due to the asynchronous availability of soil moisture and organic matter inputs. It has been proposed that fungi play a key functional role in connecting these cycles by facilitating movement of water, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) through a network of shared hyphae between plant roots and biological soil crust (biocrust) communities at the soil surface. This connection, also known as the â??fungal loop,â?? effectively re-couples processes of nutrient release and uptake between primary producers and minimizes ecosystem N losses due to leaching, erosion, and …
Effect Of Self-Interaction Correction On Molecular Polarizabilities And Core Ionization Energies, Sharmin Akter
Effect Of Self-Interaction Correction On Molecular Polarizabilities And Core Ionization Energies, Sharmin Akter
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is one of the most successful and popular computational Quantum Mechanical approaches to understanding materials. DFT allows the prediction of material properties from the electron density. Although in principle, density functional theory is exact, it, however, relies on approximate functional for exchange-correlation energy. Due to the approximate nature of the exchange-correlation functional, the self-Coulomb energy of the electrons is not exactly canceled out by the self-exchange, leading to the spurious self-interaction error (SIE). Due to this error, the potential shows incorrect behavior which leads to errors in calculated properties such as ionization energies, electron affinities, polarizabilities, …

Nanoparticles have shown their potential across a variety of areas, including advanced industrial applications and cutting-edge biomedical research. Considering their cost-effective synthesis, they have shown promise as therapeutic agents for a variety of bioimaging and biomedical applications. This thesis describes the synthesis and detailed analysis of acetaminophen-derived nanoparticles. Techniques such as Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Thioflavin T (THT) assay, Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-IR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, and Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-VIS) were utilized for structural and functional assessments. Acetaminophen derived nanoparticles (ANPs) exhibit potential to hinder the amyloidogenic conversion of soluble amyloid-forming proteins into their toxic form. The novelty of this research focuses on the utilization of chemical structures capable of traversing the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) to mitigate xenotoxicant-induced neuronal damage, a notable contributor to neurodegenerative disorders. This thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of acetaminophen derived-nanoparticles (ANPs). Our nanoparticles possess anti-amyloidogenic properties as evidenced by their ability to disrupt in the soluble-to-toxic trajectory of HEWL. The prevalence and evolution of amyloid fibrils are consistent features in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimerâ??s Disease (AD), and Huntingtonâ??s Disease (HD), as well as metabolic disorders like Type 2 diabetes (T2D). The relationship between amyloidogenic pathways and these disorders highlights the imperative for enhanced understanding and the formulation of specific therapeutic interventions.
