Spectroscopic Studies Of Laser Plasmas For Euv Sources, Simi A. George
Spectroscopic Studies Of Laser Plasmas For Euv Sources, Simi A. George
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the availability of high reflectivity multilayer mirrors and zone plate lenses, the EUV region (5nm - 40nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum is currently being explored for applications of nanoscale printing and imaging. Advances made in this area have consequences for many areas of science. Research for producing a compact, bright EUV source for laboratory use has gained momentum in recent years. For this study, EUV radiation is produced by irradiating target materials using a focused laser beam. Focused laser beam ionizes the target to create a hot, dense, pulsed plasma source, where emission is a result of the relaxation …
Physically-Based Visualization Of Residential Building Damage Process In Hurricane, Dezhi Liao
Physically-Based Visualization Of Residential Building Damage Process In Hurricane, Dezhi Liao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research provides realistic techniques to visualize the process of damage to residential building caused by hurricane force winds. Three methods are implemented to make the visualization useful for educating the public about mitigation measures for their homes. First, the underline physics uses Quick Collision Response Calculation. This is an iterative method, which can tune the accuracy and the performance to calculate collision response between building components. Secondly, the damage process is designed as a Time-scalable Process. By attaching a damage time tag for each building component, the visualization process is treated as a geometry animation allowing users to navigate …
Real-Time Tree Simulation Using Verlet Integration, Bobak Manavi
Real-Time Tree Simulation Using Verlet Integration, Bobak Manavi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most important challenges in real-time simulation of large trees and vegetation is the vast number of calculations required to simulate the interactions between all the branches in the tree when external forces are applied to it. This paper will propose the use of algorithms employed by applications like cloth and soft body simulations, where objects can be represented by a finite system of particles connected via spring-like constraints, for the structural representation and manipulation of trees in real-time. We will then derive and show the use of Verlet integration and the constraint configuration used for simulating trees …
Effect Of Inner Scale Atmospheric Spectrum Models On Scintillation In All Optical Turbulence Regimes, Kenneth Mayer
Effect Of Inner Scale Atmospheric Spectrum Models On Scintillation In All Optical Turbulence Regimes, Kenneth Mayer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experimental studies have shown that a "bump" occurs in the atmospheric spectrum just prior to turbulence cell dissipation.1,3,4 In weak optical turbulence, this bump affects calculated scintillation. The purpose of this thesis was to determine if a "non-bump" atmospheric power spectrum can be used to model scintillation for plane waves and spherical waves in moderate to strong optical turbulence regimes. Scintillation expressions were developed from an "effective" von Karman spectrum using an approach similar to that used by Andrews et al.8,14,15 in developing expressions from an "effective" modified (bump) spectrum. The effective spectrum extends the Rytov approximation into all optical …
Modeled And Observed N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield Band Emissions Earth's Dayglow: A Comparison, Donald Murray
Modeled And Observed N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield Band Emissions Earth's Dayglow: A Comparison, Donald Murray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ultraviolet (UV) spectra obtained from Earth’s dayglow contain important information for understanding the thermosphere, and the N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) bands are possibly the most useful emission. To be useful, a thorough understanding of how the LBH band emission varies with altitude and latitude is essential to present and future use of this emission by space-based remote sensors. Excited by photoelectron impact on N2 leading to transitions from the a 1Πg state to the ground state, the LBH emissions radiate between 1270 and 2400 Å. In addition to being populated by electron impact excitation, the a 1Πg state is populated by …
High Birefringence Liquid Crystals For Optical Communications, Amanda Jane Parish
High Birefringence Liquid Crystals For Optical Communications, Amanda Jane Parish
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High birefringence (Δn > 0.4) nematic liquid crystals are particularly attractive for infrared applications because they enable a thinner cell gap to be used for achieving fast response time and improved diffraction efficiency. In this thesis, the mesomorphic and electro‐optic properties of several new fluorinated isothiocyanate (NCS) terphenyl and phenyl tolane single compounds and mixtures are reported. The single compounds demonstrated Δn~0.35‐0.52 in the visible spectral region at room temperature and exhibit relatively low viscosity. It was found that lateral fluorine substitutions and short alkyl chains eliminate smectic phase and lower the melting temperature of the single compounds. However, the consequence …
Analytical Potential Of Polymerized Liposomes Bound To Lanthanide Ions For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Proteins, Marina Santos
Analytical Potential Of Polymerized Liposomes Bound To Lanthanide Ions For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Proteins, Marina Santos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the intriguing features of biological systems is the prevalence of highly selective and often very strong interactions among different cellular components. Such interactions play a variety of organizational, mechanical, and physiological roles at the cellular and organism levels. Antigen-antibody complexes are representative examples of highly selective and potent interactions involving proteins. The marked specificity of protein-antibody complexes have led to a wide range of applications in cellular and molecular biology related research. They have become an integral research tool in the present genomic and proteomic era. Unfortunately, the production of selective tools based on antigen-antibody interactions requires cumbersome …
Surface Characterization Of Thin Film Zno Capacitors By Capacitance-Voltage Measurements, Linda Smith
Surface Characterization Of Thin Film Zno Capacitors By Capacitance-Voltage Measurements, Linda Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of the research was the fabrication and characterization of MOS/MIS capacitors with ZnO as the insulating layer. Comparison with the already well known behavior of MOS/MIS capacitors with SiO2 as insulator was used to facilitate determination of the ZnO characteristics. Moreover, thermal annealing of the samples led to increased understanding of the role of defects on the dielectric properties of the ZnO layers in the MOS/MIS devices. Hall-effect transport measurements and x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy are used to analyze the structure and electronic surface characteristics of the ZnO insulator. Capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements are used to understand the …
Discrete Surface Solitons, Sergiy Suntsov
Discrete Surface Solitons, Sergiy Suntsov
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface waves exist along the interfaces between two different media and are known to display properties that have no analogue in continuous systems. In years past, they have been the subject of many studies in a diverse collection of scientific disciplines. In optics, one of the mechanisms through which optical surface waves can exist is material nonlinearity. Until recently, most of the activity in this area was focused on interfaces between continuous media but no successful experiments have been reported. However, the growing interest that nonlinear discrete optics has attracted in the last two decades has raised the question of …

Design And Demonstration Of Meanderline Retarders At Infrared Frequencies, Jeffrey Scott Tharp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Meanderline structures are widely used as engineered birefringent materials for waveplates and retarders at radiofrequencies, and have been previously demonstrated at frequencies up to 90 GHz in the millimeter-wave band. In this dissertation, we present results related to the modeling, fabrication, and experimental characterization of meanderlines across the range from 30 to 100 THz, in the long-wave and mid-wave infrared bands. Specific issues addressed in these new designs include spectral dispersion and angular dependence of the retardance, as well as axial ratio and throughput. The impact resulting from the infrared properties of the metals and dielectrics is explicitly included throughout. …
Influence Of Electron Trapping On Minority Carrier Transport Properties Of Wide Band Gap Semiconductors, Olena Tirpak
Influence Of Electron Trapping On Minority Carrier Transport Properties Of Wide Band Gap Semiconductors, Olena Tirpak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Minority carrier transport properties and the effects of electron irradiation/injection were studied in GaN and ZnO containing dopants known to form acceptor states deep within the materials' bandgap. Minority carrier diffusion length and lifetime changes were investigated using Electron Beam Induced Current (EBIC) method, cathodoluminescence spectroscopy, spectral photoresponse and persistent photoconductivity measurements. It is shown that electron irradiation by the beam of a scanning electron microscope results in a significant increase of minority carrier diffusion length. These findings are supported by the cathodoluminescence measurements that demonstrate the decay of near-band-edge intensity as a consequence of increasing carrier lifetime under continuous …
Soliton Solutions Of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Using Variational Approximations And Inverse Scattering Techniques, Thomas Vogel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the last several decades many techniques have been developed in establishing solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (NPDE). These techniques are characterized by their limited reach in solving large classes of NPDE. This body of work will study the analysis of NPDE using two of the most ubiquitous techniques developed in the last century. In this body of work, the analysis and techniques herein are applied to unsolved physical problems in both the fields of variational approximations and inverse scattering transform. Additionally, a new technique for estimating the error of a variational approximation is established. Note that the material …

Advances In Fire Debris Analysis, Mary Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fire incidents are a major contributor to the number of deaths and property losses within the United States each year. Fire investigations determine the cause of the fire resulting in an assignment of responsibility. Current methods of fire debris analysis are reviewed including the preservation, extraction, detection and characterization of ignitable liquids from fire debris. Leak rates were calculated for the three most common types of fire debris evidence containers. The consequences of leaking containers on the recovery and characterization of ignitable liquids were demonstrated. The interactions of hydrocarbons with activated carbon during the extraction of ignitable liquids from the …
Stability And Preservation Properties Of Multisymplectic Integrators, Tomasz Wlodarczyk
Stability And Preservation Properties Of Multisymplectic Integrators, Tomasz Wlodarczyk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents results of the study on symplectic and multisymplectic numerical methods for solving linear and nonlinear Hamiltonian wave equations. The emphasis is put on the second order space and time discretizations of the linear wave, the Klein-Gordon and the sine-Gordon equations. For those equations we develop two multisymplectic (MS) integrators and compare their performance to other popular symplectic and non-symplectic numerical methods. Tools used in the linear analysis are related to the Fourier transform and consist of the dispersion relationship and the power spectrum of the numerical solution. Nonlinear analysis, in turn, is closely connected to the temporal …
Model Studies Of Time-Dependent Ducting For High-Frequency Gravity Waves And Associated Airglow Responses In The Upper Atmospher, Yonghui Yu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This doctoral dissertation has mainly concentrated on modeling studies of shorter period acoustic-gravity waves propagating in the upper atmosphere. Several cases have been investigated in the literature, which are focusing on the propagation characteristics of high-frequency gravity wave packets. The dissertation consists of five main divisions of which each has its own significance to be addressed, and these five chapters are also bridged in order with each other to present a theme about gravity wave ducting dynamics, energetics, and airglows. The first chapter is served as an introduction of the general topic about atmospheric acoustic-gravity waves. Some of the historical …

A Mathematical Study Of Two Retroviruses, Hiv And Htlv-I, Dana Ali Baxley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we examine epidemiological models of two different retroviruses, which infect the human body. The two viruses under study are HIV or the human immunodefiency virus and HTLV-I, which is the human T lymphotropic virus type I. A retrovirus is a virus, which injects its RNA into the host, rather than it's DNA. We will study each of the different mathematical models for each of the viruses separately. Then we use MATLAB-SIMULINK to analyze the models by studying the reproductive numbers in each case and the disease progression by examining the graphs. In Chapter 1, we mention basic …

Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu
Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Testing the homogeneity of variances is an important problem in many applications since statistical methods of frequent use, such as ANOVA, assume equal variances for two or more groups of data. However, testing the equality of variances is a difficult problem due to the fact that many of the tests are not robust against non-normality. It is known that the kurtosis of the distribution of the source data can affect the performance of the tests for variance. We review the classical tests and their latest, more robust modifications, some other tests that have recently appeared in the literature, and use …
Amended Estimators Of Several Ratios For Categorical Data., Dandan Chen
Amended Estimators Of Several Ratios For Categorical Data., Dandan Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Point estimation of several association parameters in categorical data are presented. Typically, a constant is added to the frequency counts before the association measure is computed. We will study the accuracy of these adjusted point estimators based on frequentist and Bayesian methods respectively. In particular, amended estimators for the ratio of independent Poisson rates, relative risk, odds ratio, and the ratio of marginal binomial proportions will be examined in terms of bias and mean squared error.

Cholesterol is an important biological molecule with many important functions. However, high serum cholesterol is a health hazard. Thus analysis of cholesterol is important and many analytical techniques have been developed. The objectives of the proposed research are to develop an economical, rapid method for the determination of total cholesterol with good selectivity and enhanced sensitivity. For evaluation of proposed flow injection analysis with peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (FIA-POCL) method, figures of merit such as accuracy, precision, and linear dynamic range will be assessed. The proposed procedure was then applied to the determination of total cholesterol in foods. The procedure was linear …
Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia
Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …
Fluctuating Asymmetry And Its Relationship To Established Indicators Of Environmental Stress., Matthew Stephen Shotwell
Fluctuating Asymmetry And Its Relationship To Established Indicators Of Environmental Stress., Matthew Stephen Shotwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is commonly thought to be a predictor of environmental stress. However, the relationship between FA and established indicators for environmental stress has received little attention. In this study, 10-38 specimens of the freshwater fish Rhinichthys atratulus were collected from 15 natural populations under varying amounts of environmental stress. Asymmetry measurements in three bilateral characters of the specimens were used to investigate the relationship between FA and established indicators of environmental stress. Significant differences in the magnitude of FA were observed between sampling locations. However, the relationship between estimates of FA and established indicators produced varying results. The …

Double Domination Edge Critical Graphs., Derrick Wayne Thacker
Double Domination Edge Critical Graphs., Derrick Wayne Thacker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In a graph G=(V,E), a subset S ⊆ V is a double dominating set if every vertex in V is dominated at least twice. The minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G is the double domination number. A graph G is double domination edge critical if for any edge uv ∈ E(G̅), the double domination number of G+uv is less than the double domination number of G. We investigate properties of double domination edge critical graphs. In particular, we characterize the double domination edge critical trees and …
Bayesian Reference Inference On The Ratio Of Poisson Rates., Changbin Guo
Bayesian Reference Inference On The Ratio Of Poisson Rates., Changbin Guo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bayesian reference analysis is a method of determining the prior under the Bayesian paradigm. It incorporates as little information as possible from the experiment. Estimation of the ratio of two independent Poisson rates is a common practical problem. In this thesis, the method of reference analysis is applied to derive the posterior distribution of the ratio of two independent Poisson rates, and then to construct point and interval estimates based on the reference posterior. In addition, the Frequentist coverage property of HPD intervals is verified through simulation.
Trees With Unique Minimum Locating-Dominating Sets., Stephen M. Lane
Trees With Unique Minimum Locating-Dominating Sets., Stephen M. Lane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A set S of vertices in a graph G = (V, E) is a locating-dominating set if S is a dominating set of G, and every pair of distinct vertices {u, v} in V - S is located with respect to S, that is, if the set of neighbors of u that are in S is not equal to the set of neighbors of v that are in S. We give a construction of trees that have unique minimum locating-dominating sets.
Strategies For Encoding Xml Documents In Relational Databases: Comparisons And Contrasts., Jonathan Lee Leonard
Strategies For Encoding Xml Documents In Relational Databases: Comparisons And Contrasts., Jonathan Lee Leonard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rise of XML as a de facto standard for document and data exchange has created a need to store and query XML documents in relational databases, today's de facto standard for data storage. Two common strategies for storing XML documents in relational databases, a process known as document shredding, are Interval encoding and ORDPATH Encoding. Interval encoding, which uses a fixed mapping for shredding XML documents, tends to favor selection queries, at a potential cost of O(N) for supporting insertion queries. ORDPATH Encoding, which uses a looser mapping for shredding XML, supports fixed-cost insertions, at a potential cost of …
